Plants at Risk with Susan Leopold + List of Possible Substitutions05 Jun 202400:55:13

I am a huge fan of the work done through United Plant Savers (UPS) and so it was truly an honor to have Susan Leopold, the executive director of UPS, on the show!

I had so much fun talking with Susan.  Of course she discussed the UPS’s efforts to catalog and protect at-risk native medicinal plants, but this conversation also went places I didn’t expect,  including some of the history of herbal medicine in the United States and a sneak peek at next year’s International Herb Symposium.

Susan also talked about some of the many free resources United Plant Savers has to offer, like their list of at-risk plants and herbs that you can use to substitute for these plants medicinally, which you can access here.

And if you’re interested in helping UPS’s efforts in medicinal plant conservation, I highly recommend getting a membership!  I’ve been a member for so many years, and I think everybody who loves plants should be a member of United Plant Savers if at all possible.  You can find a link to become a member on the show notes page here.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► Who the Eclectics were and why they are so relevant to herbalism and plant conservation today

► How United Plant Savers compiles its lists of at-risk plants, and how you can use these lists to guide your use and purchase of medicinal herbs

► Why United Plant Savers encourages people to engage and interact with plants rather than taking a hands-off approach

► Why buying wild-harvested white sage is so problematic (and what you can do to help!)

► Why Susan considers Echinacea to be “the voice of the prairie”

► Four ways you can directly help with conservation of at-risk medicinal plants

► and so much more…

For those of you who don’t already know her, Susan Leopold is an ethnobotanist and conservation ecologist known for her work in the fields of plant conservation, sustainable agriculture, and ethnobotany. She is the Executive Director of the United Plant Savers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting native medicinal plants and fungi and their habitat. Leopold is an advocate for ethical wildcrafting practices, community-based conservation initiatives, and the preservation of traditional plant knowledge.

If you’d like to hear more from Susan, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for her website and social media channels. You can also find the transcript for this episode in the show notes and you can access your list of at-risk plants and herbs that you can use to substitute for these plants medicinally at: https://bit.ly/3R6uK2z.

I’m thrilled to share our conversation with you today.

Benefits of Bee Balm with Abby Artemisia24 Aug 202200:53:56

I was literally jumping up and down for joy when Abby shared that she was choosing bee balm (Monarda didyma) for this episode because this is such a fun plant. More than that, though, bee balm is powerfully medicinal, can be used for seasoning food (more on this later), and it’s great for pollinators.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► Multiple ways to work with bee balm medicinally (it’s great for colds and flu, among other things!)

► What bee balm teaches us about balancing community with personal space

► Tips for growing bee balm yourself

► Why it’s important to incorporate community into the practice of herbalism

You’ll also receive instant FREE access to a recipe card for Abby’s Wild Oregano (Bee Balm) Salt. Not only is this recipe easy to make and medicinal, it’s also delicious! Abby shares that she uses it to season anything where you’d want oregano and salt: eggs, popcorn, and mushrooms are just a few ideas to get you started.

CAUTION: Bee balm is an emmenagogue and should not be taken during pregnancy.

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Bee balm always grows in community. When I see it in the wild, I never see it growing alone.”

Botanist, Herbalist, and Professional Forager, Abby Artemisia, was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she spent her free time climbing trees and creek wandering. This is where her love of nature began. Her love of plants had a diverse foundation from apprenticeships on organic farms on the west coast and in the Midwest, to a bachelor’s degree in Botany from Miami University and an apprenticeship in herbalism with Herbalist, Leslita Williams, along with owning and operating her own tea business.

After visiting Pisgah National Forest, she fell in love with the biodiversity of the southeast. Abby then founded the WANDER School, the Wild Artemisia Nature Discovery, Empowerment, and Reconnection School. Through the school, Abby offers the Wildcrafted Herb School Program, customizable workshops, and botanical property surveys. The WANDER School became a nonprofit in 2020 to provide botanical education, herbs, and herbal medicine to underserved communities, and practice Acknowledgement and Reciprocity for Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Abby is also the author of the Herbal Handbook for Homesteaders and The Wild Foraged Life Cookbook, along with the host of the podcast Wander, Forage, & Wildcraft.

Abby is currently working on Botany Breakdown: A Virtual Course for Botanists & Foragers to create the confidence to safely harvest the wild food and herbs that grow around us every day.

I love that Abby shared information, not only from her personal experiences, but also from traditional acknowledged sources. I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today!

This conversation is a real treat. I love how Guido weaves together many seemingly different pieces of herbalism, whether it's chemical constituents, heart centered healing, or even mythology and folklore. He also perfectly summarizes why I love being an herbalist.

You’ll also receive instant access to a FREE recipe card with Guido’s instructions for how to make yarrow powder from the fresh plant.

I love this recipe for many reasons. One is that yarrow powder is a truly wondrous healer for cuts and scrapes. This is one remedy you’ll never want to be without! Another is that rather than letting any part of the plant go to waste, Guido also shares how you can process and use the yarrow stalks to cast the I Ching, a traditional Chinese oracular system.

For those of you who don't know him already, Guido Masé is an herbalist and garden steward, specializing in therapeutic herbalism and the pharmacology of plants and mushrooms.

He spent his childhood in Italy, in the central Alps, in a Renaissance town called Ferrara. After traveling the United States, he settled into Vermont where he has been living since 1996. He is a founder, faculty member, and clinical supervisor at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, a 501(c)(3), nonprofit herbal medicine clinic and school. He serves as herbalist, principal scientist, and chief formulator at Traditional Medicinals, where he works on herbal teas, supplements, bitters, and tonics. He is a founding member of the Railyard Apothecary in Burlington, Vermont, where he works as part of a collaborative clinical practice.

He's the author of the The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing with Aromatic, Bitter, and Tonic Plants, as well as the book DIY Bitters.

Listen in for:

► Why yarrow is one of Guido’s most beloved herbal allies

► What makes plants and herbal medicine, in Guido’s words, a chemistry of communion

► How medicinal compounds tell a story (quite literally)

Show snippet:

“So many incredible things from Yarrow, as well as its shining beauty in the field or in the garden, make this perhaps my most beloved ally.”

Rosehips with Julie James25 May 202200:33:19

Rosehips are famous for their vitamin C content, but as herbalist Julie James will tell you, “[Vitamin C] is the least sexy part of rose hips.”

That’s because rosehips are filled with so many benefits that go way beyond vitamin C! For example, we’ll share how one of its most underrated gifts is for modulating inflammation.

In this episode, you’ll hear all about rosehips, plus you’ll get Julie’s yummy Rosehip Electuary recipe. Imagine having a spoonful of this super-easy sweet treat every day, knowing that as it melts in your mouth you’re getting vitamin C and other rosehips nutrients.

In case you’re not already familiar with her, Julie is the owner of Green Wisdom Herbs in Long Beach, CA, a full service herb shop and school, where she has cultivated an herbal community dedicated to improving access to healing plants and to reliable herbal information. She teaches classes in person and sometimes online, with her primary focus being her 2 year herbal apprenticeship, through which she has sent hundreds of new herbalists into the world. Having spent over 30 years as an herbalist, she delights in sharing her love of plants by combining science and magic, awe and intellect, and by encouraging folks to get their hands dirty, bodies nourished, bellies filled, and minds blown.

Listen in for:

► Why ingesting the whole plant gives you the most benefits

► Why an electuary can be an ideal (not to mention delicious) way to receive all that rose hips have to offer

► Why you might want to buy rose hips already cut and sifted, rather than growing and harvesting your own

Show snippet:

“I always feel like I’m missing something in a tea because I’m not ingesting the whole plant.”

Rhodiola with Ben LeVine13 Apr 202200:45:00

Rhodiola is an amazing herb to support you during times of stress! It’s energizing without causing jitters, supportive to the immune system, helpful to modulate the physical effects of stress as you’re making lifestyle changes. Rhodiola rosea is so rich in gifts, but these very attributes have led to overharvesting and sustainability issues. That’s why I am excited to share this conversation with Ben LeVine with you!

Ben not only shares a lot of information about the efforts that are underway to protect this wonderful herb, but also gives questions you can ask suppliers to make sure the rhodiola (and other endangered herbs) you are buying were harvested sustainably. And as a listener, you’ll also receive instant access to his recipe for Rhodiola Energy Balls.

For those of you who aren’t already familiar with Ben, here’s more about him. Sitting quietly atop a Colorado mountain peak, Ben LeVine felt a voice from his favorite herb that would define his future: “You were meant to become an herbalist. Just let the plants guide you.” That path has led him to the farthest corners of the Earth and back, driven to unravel the mysteries of the world’s most powerful plants. Now as Co-Founder and Chief Herbalist of Rasa, he’s using those potent herbal secrets to revolutionize your morning energy ritual with the power of adaptogens.

Listen in for:

► Considerations and questions to ask when sourcing rhodiola

► Why rhodiola’s growing conditions make it adaptogenic for humans

► What cautions should you be aware of when working with adaptogenic herbs?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Are you using adaptogens to build a ladder out of the bucket or are you just using [them] to struggle longer? I'm seeing adaptogens sometimes co-opted this way – like a one-to-one replacement for coffee, with no lifestyle changes, no introspection."

It was a delight to speak with Ben and I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today!

Safe Herbs for Dogs and Cats with Swanie Simon30 Mar 202200:53:21

Are you concerned about safe herbs for dogs and cats, as well as cautions to be aware of when working with herbs for cats and dogs? If so you won’t want to miss this informative and inspiring interview with animal herbalist and naturopath Swanie Simon! I love it when my guests make things practical and Swanie delivers with instant access to two herbal recipes for pets, a paw salve and a carrot soup that can work wonders to relieve diarrhea.

Swanie’s love of animals and nature was apparent from a very young age and she has spent her life working with animals and learning everything she could about them. Influenced by Juliette de Bairacli Levy’s books, she went on to become an herbalist, TCVM practitioner and naturopath for animals (Tierheilpraktiker). Juliette de Bairacli Levy went on to become a dear friend and lived at Swanie’s farm in Germany for several years.

Swanie is highly specialized in the natural rearing and treatment of dogs and cats and is one of Europe’s most renowned authors, teachers and herbalists. She is credited with making the subject of raw diets for dogs and cats popular in Europe and has written several best-selling books on the subject.

Swanie has been teaching herbalism, TCVM and dog & cat nutrition since 2005 and online classes in Germany since 2014.
She is planning online classes in English starting in 2023.

Today Swanie lives on a beautiful farm in the high forest region of Germany with 4 dogs, 5 cats, 2 horses, about 20 goats and a gang of chickens. She splits her time between her farm in Germany and her home in the beautiful Provence region of south France.

Listen in for:

► What diet is best for dogs and cats?

► Are essential oils a good idea for flea and tick prevention?

► Are there any maintenance herbs that are safe for pets?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“The first, most important thing is always my patient. I want them to feel good, and not my ideology and my ego, but the patient has to feel good.”

I met Swanie years ago and her depth of knowledge was immediately apparent. Because I’m often asked about working with herbs for pets, I leaned into Swanie's expertise to hear her many insights on working safely with herbs for dogs and cats and let the conversation go on longer than usual. I think you’ll agree that was a good choice and I’m thrilled to share our conversation with you today!

Purple Dead Nettle with Colleen Codekas23 Mar 202200:24:51

Purple dead nettle is an alluring weed that often grabs our attention in the spring. It can spring up in lawns and disturbed places, forming a thick mat of its bee-enticing flowers.

Despite all the intrigue surrounding purple dead nettle, there’s so little information about it! I'm so excited to talk with Colleen Codekas about purple dead nettle (Lamium purpureum) because she has lots of experience with this plant as a forager and herbal medicine maker. You’ll also receive access to Colleen’s recipe for herbal honey infused with purple dead nettle, which could serve as a tasty way to get some relief from seasonal allergies!

If you don’t already know Colleen, you’re about to find out that she is passionate about healthy living through natural food and herbal medicine! She lives with her family of three in Vermont where living close to nature is easy and a way of life. In her off-time, she likes to go foraging for wild edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms, cook delicious food, make mead, grow a ridiculous amount of edible and medicinal plants, and make herbal medicine. She is the author of the traditionally published book Healing Herbal Infusions, and four ebooks: Wildcrafting Weeds, Healing Kitchen Herbs, Simple Mead Making, and The Backyard Forest Garden.

► ► ► Colleen has also created an online foraging course, gather + root, which you can learn more about at: https://bit.ly/3pVJnIt (Disclosure: This is an affiliate link. By using it, you help support this channel. Thanks!)

Listen in for:

► Herbs that combine well with purple dead nettle in pesto

► Is fresh or dried purple dead nettle best for infusing herbal honey?

► Are there any purple dead nettle look-alikes to be aware of?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Things would start growing in our yard that were like weeds, most people would think of as weeds. I was just so interested. Like, what is this plant? What is that plant? Almost every single one was something that was used either for herbalism purposes or for food or both.”

Colleen and I have known each other online for a long time and it was really fun to have a face-to-face visit with her and to share our conversation with you!

This is Maria Noël Groves’s second time on the show, and I’m thrilled to have her back!  You can tell that Maria is an herbal teacher, because this episode is packed with in-depth herbal information about lemon balm.  She shares so much wisdom about lemon balm’s gifts that I just  can’t wait to get into the garden and work with this wonderful plant again!

Maria also shared many ways to work with lemon balm, including her recipe for Lemon Balm Fresh Tincture.  (You can find the link to your free, beautifully illustrated recipe card here.)

When might you turn to lemon balm? Here are just a few instances when lovely lemon balm can be helpful:

► When you want to improve your focus

► When you’re feeling stressed out or anxious, and need some nervous system support

► When you need some immune system and antiviral support

But in all of these cases, you need to know how to source or prepare the most potent herbal medicines with lemon balm. Otherwise, your results will probably be disappointing. Tune in to the entire episode for all the details so you can enjoy the most lemon balm benefits!

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► How herbs can help to support you in getting a good night’s sleep

► What makes lemon balm such a powerful herbal ally

► Why it’s important to source high-quality lemon balm (or grow your own!)

► Three tips for harvesting lemon balm when it is most potent

► Maria’s tips for making a glycerite with lemon balm

► Why it’s best to get to know herbs by working with them, rather than simply reading lists about what they’re “good for”

► and so much more…

For those of you who don’t know her, Maria Noël Groves is a clinical herbalist nestled in the pine forests of New Hampshire. Her business, Wintergreen Botanicals, is devoted to education and empowerment via herbal courses, health consultations, and writing with the foundational belief that good health grows in nature. She is the author of the books Body into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self Care, Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies, and the new Herbal Remedies for Sleep.

If you’d like to hear more from Maria, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for her website and social media channels. You can also find the transcript for this episode in the show notes and you can access your recipe card for Lemon Balm Fresh Tincture at: https://bit.ly/44KZonW.

Motherwort Benefits with Maria Noël Groves16 Mar 202200:36:15

Motherwort benefits us in so many ways and can be especially supportive for the “overworked and unappreciated,” as my guest, Maria Noël Groves, shares in this episode. Please join us to hear about the gifts of motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca). You’ll also receive Maria’s motherwort tincture recipe, which she has aptly named: Motherwort Calming Relief Tincture.

Maria Noël Groves is a clinical herbalist who runs Wintergreen Botanicals Herbal Education Center and clinic, nestled in the pine forests of New Hampshire. Her business is devoted to education and empowerment via classes, health consultations, and writing with the foundational belief that good health grows in nature. She is the author of the award-winning, best-selling book Body into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self Care as well as the book Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies.

Listen in for:

► How motherwort excels in supporting the nervous system, without creating a sedated feeling

► How can you make a potent tincture with fresh herbs?

► Does motherwort have side effects on the thyroid gland?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“One of the many aspects of motherwort that I really adore is the way that it helps support us when we are feeling anxious or just our emotional stability is a little bit off and it has benefits with long term use. But even in the moment, within minutes after taking the tincture, I and many of my clients will notice this immediate kind of grounding action.”

I've long respected Maria's work and herbal offerings, so it was a personal pleasure to have her on the show. Thank you for joining us today!

Rosemary with Erika Galentin09 Mar 202200:48:37

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is an herb of so many gifts! In this video, Clinical Herbalist Erika Galentin focuses on the warming and comforting qualities of rosemary for the emotional heart. She also talks about the connections between our emotional and physical selves and how rosemary can help to support us in times of grief.

Erika is my third guest to choose rosemary as a focus for conversation and she is the first to explore this particular facet of this wonderful herb. Please join us and you’ll also receive Erika’s recipe for Sweet and Warming Rosemary Cordial.

Erika is a Clinical Herbalist and co-creatrix of Sovereignty Herbs in Athens & Columbus, OH. She holds a degree in Herbal Medicine from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK and Scottish School of Herbal Medicine, Glasgow, UK. She is a professional member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (UK) and the American Herbalists Guild (USA). She is also a proud member of Pi Alpha Xi National Honor Society in Horticulture (USA).

Over a decade of clinical practice has provided a platform for witnessing the efficacy of medicinal plants and aromatics within a clinical environment. It is through this clinical practice that Erika seeks to encourage positive, learned relationships between plants and people and people and their bodies. She is a firm believer in celebrating the role that emotions and the psyche play in the ecology of our physical terrain.

In addition to clinical practice, Erika is both a student and teacher of horticulture, native medicinal plant conservation and ecology, and the phenomenological and Goethean study of plants and their medicinal virtues. With her dedication to medicinal plants native to Appalachian Ohio and the Greater Appalachian region, Erika teaches, lectures, and writes on native medicinal plant conservation and applied ecology, propagation, herbalism, and clinical efficacy. She also participates as a member of the Education Advisory Council of the American Herbalists Guild as well as the Stewardship Committee of Appalachia Ohio Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of land and water in Southeast Ohio.

She is the author of The Family Guide to Aromatherapy: A Safe Approach to Essential Oils for a Holistic Home.

Listen in for:

► How grief can show up in the physical body and how rosemary can be a support

► How herbs do (and don’t) work

► Who should be cautious about working with rosemary?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“When it comes to herbalism, we can’t expect to swallow a solution. We have to learn to be the solution.” (Timestamp: 40:05)

I’m so excited to share my conversation with Erika with you! Thank you for joining us to explore the gifts of rosemary for the heart.

Grindelia with Lisa Ganora02 Mar 202201:26:46

Grindelia, or gumweed as it's sometimes known, is a warming, aromatic expectorant, a smooth muscle relaxant that can soothe a spasmodic cough...and it's abundant in many landscapes. Please join me for a discussion about this weed of many gifts with Lisa Ganora, who is delightfully energetic and obviously thrilled to share her abundant wisdom. You’ll also receive Lisa’s detailed recipe for Grindelia Respiratory Elixir.

For those of you who don't know her, Lisa began studying herbal medicine in the early 80s. After practicing as a Wise Woman tradition community herbalist, wildcrafter, and medicine-maker for a decade, Lisa returned to school at UNCA and graduated summa cum laude with multiple awards in biology and chemistry. After graduation, she focused on exploring herbal constituents; pharmacognosy and phytochemistry, in the context of Western clinical herbalism and Vitalist therapeutics. In addition to founding and directing the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism from 2012 to 2020, and managing Elderberry's Farm, a Rocky Mountain herbal education center in Paonia, Colorado, Lisa has also served as Adjunct Professor of Pharmacognosy at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, and has lectured and taught classes at numerous schools and conferences around the world.

She is the author of Herbal Constituents, in its 2nd edition, a popular textbook on herbal phytochemistry for natural health practitioners, which is used by schools and universities worldwide. Lisa also teaches distance learning courses on herbal constituents and pharmacy and formulates botanical and CBD products for the dietary supplements industry.

Listen in for:

► How the cacao tree, a friend’s advice, and dandelion root got Lisa started on her herbal path

► Why Lisa uses Grindelia in respiratory formulas and how it can serve as an alternative to oshá

► Why it’s valuable to know the constituents of a plant and how to extract them

► How we are all inextricably connected, from the standpoint of chemistry

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Instead of thinking, ‘This herb is good for this condition,’ I like to think, ‘What actions does the herb have? And then what actions do you need with this condition?’” (Timestamp: 00:49:47)

I was so thoroughly enjoying all that she had to say that I let the conversation meander longer than usual. As you listen to Lisa’s many pearls of wisdom, I think you'll agree it was a good choice. I’m delighted to bring our conversation to you today!

Health Benefits of Plantain Leaf with jim mcdonald23 Feb 202200:49:38

Though often dismissed as a “beginner herb,” the health benefits of plantain leaf – and ways of working with this versatile herb – are many. Please join me to explore all things plantain with my dear friend and fellow herbalist, jim mcdonald.

For those of you who don’t yet know jim, here’s a bit more about him:

In 1994, jim mcdonald's life changed when he drank tea from a wild plant he harvested from the land he lived upon. Since those first sips of strange tea, his life in the woods and meadows of southeast michigan has been centered on the plants & ecosystems of that land, and how he might share their virtues to restore wellness with those around him. jim's approach to herbcraft is deeply rooted in the land he lives upon, and blends traditional european folk influences with 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he conveys with story, experience, humour, common sense and lore to students, clients, random passersby and readers of his website www.herbcraft.org. He's taught classes throughout north america and is currently alternately writing “Foundational Herbcraft” and “A Great Lakes Herbal,” in addition to articles for journals and other publications. jim is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter and medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves.

Listen in for:

► jim’s experience of working with plantain in his own life (Timestamp: 20:53)

► The most effective way to work with plantain for itchy, irritated, insect-bitten skin (31:59)

► How other herbal traditions can be a springboard for exploration (Timestamp: 42:50)

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“So much of herbalism is in not the big claims of this does that, or this is that, or this is anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory for this reason or that reason. It's finding the nuance of ‘Oh, this works best like this for this presentation and this kind of person.’”

jim shines at bringing curiosity, critical thought and common sense to working with herbs, matching herbs to people rather than mixing and matching herbs for X, Y, Z problem or disease. He’s an engaging teacher with a world of wisdom to share and I’m delighted to bring our conversation to you today!

Rosemary with Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz16 Feb 202200:34:52

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) has so many gifts… it’s rich in antioxidants, a delicious culinary herb, and celebrated for enhancing memory. Rosemary is also often underrated for its ability to get things moving and reduce pain in cold or sore muscles.

That’s why I’m so excited to bring you this conversation about rosemary with Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz. She’ll share the many ways she works with this wonderful herb, including her recipe for a rosemary tonic you can rub on to give some relief to sore joints or muscles when it’s cold outside.

Felicia is an author, indigenous foods activist, natural foods chef, and curandera (Mexican traditional healer) educating and supporting others in reclaiming the kitchen healer approach to health with Indigenous wisdom and whole food cooking. Her holistic wellness background spans over 25 years in which she has had the opportunity to work with grassroots activists, tribal leaders, top wellness resorts, and professional athletes–helping people (re)connect to their ancestral foods, earth medicines, and health practices.

Felicia’s work has been featured in Spirituality & Health, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, and many other media platforms including The Original Americans episode on Padma Lakshmi’s Taste The Nation (Hulu). Felicia presents frequently around the country on Native American healing practices, holistic wellness, and Native American food sustainability at community events, universities, and museums–including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

Listen in for:

► How Felicia’s grandmother used herbs when she was a nurse in a tuberculosis ward (Timestamp: 09:04)

► Why you might want to bring herbs that your ancestors worked with into your day to day life (19:12)

► The role of ritual and gratitude (Timestamp: 28:20)

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Most of the grandmothers that I learned from… a lot of them said the same thing. You should know five herbs very well and know how to use them in all different ways.” (Timestamp: 32:50)

It was a delight to spend time with Felicia and I’m very happy to share our conversation with you!

Grow Your Own Vegetables with Stacey Murphy09 Feb 202200:33:35

Ever wanted to grow your own vegetables and herbs but feel overwhelmed at the prospect (or discouraged by less-than-satisfying previous results)? If that’s you, I have something special for you this week!

Listen in as I explore an underrated but surprisingly easy to grow vegetable with Stacey Murphy. You’ll also receive access to a recipe for a truly delicious salad that features a combination of ingredients that may surprise you AND a link (https://bit.ly/3Gu5bAu -- disclosure: affiliate link) where you can register to watch Stacey’s free docuseries, The Joyful Gardener, airing February 14-21.

If you don’t already know Stacey, she was an engineer and an architect with a busy job and a long commute. It frustrated her that she could manage complex projects at work, but a vegetable & herb garden seemed impossible to fit into everyday life.

In 2009, she was taught techniques for growing tons of organic vegetables and herbs in a small space with not a lot of effort. Since then, she has been obsessed with helping people create good garden habits that fit into their busy schedule and most importantly fit their personality. Grow Your Own Vegetables began as an idea with her fellow students and gardeners to show how shockingly simple it CAN be. It’s their mission to support one million beginning gardeners to cultivate successful vegetable and herb gardens so that you, too, can enjoy a grocery aisle right in your own yard (or even inside your house)!

Listen in for:

► The carrot that brought Stacey back to her gardening roots

► How Stacey began gardening when she lived in a small apartment in a major metropolis

► What’s important to remember if you’re just getting started with gardening?

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“[The Joyful Gardener] docuseries at its heart is about the joy, the surprise and wonder of discovering food again, of your connection with the plants, seeing the wellness and abundance of nature and knowing that you're taken care of, that these plants are here to care for you and the nourishment and the nurturing that the plants do for you in the process.”

I hope you’ll come away feeling as inspired as I was by everything Stacey shared!

What are the Benefits of Herbal Teas vs. Herbal Tinctures?12 Jan 202200:17:00

Part of the joy of working with herbs is knowing how to best work with herbal medicinals. There are advantages to making your own herbal preparations, but there are a lot of beginner mistakes to avoid when making herbal medicinals at home.

In this episode, I am joined by my friend and fellow herbalist, Emily Han, to share the pros and cons of herbal teas vs. herbal tinctures.

We’ll also share how you can get clear, step-by-step recipes for both a tea and a tincture made with stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) so that you can make the best herbal medicinals at home!

Show Snippet: “Home medicine makers often make tinctures too weak. For example, they don’t use enough plant material or don’t finely chop the plants so the ratio of plants to alcohol is very high. We see a lot of pretty photos on social media that in reality, are very weak and poor herbal medicines.” (Podcast Timestamp: 11:03)

Motherwort with Thomas Avery Garran + Tension Relief Tincture15 May 202401:02:57

I've spent many hours poring over Thomas Avery Garran’s materia medica books.  In fact, his first book was one of the first herbal books that I bought when I started studying Chinese medicine!  And as you’ll see in this episode, Thomas clearly loves plants and has wonderful insights into them, from their gifts and energetics to how to grow and harvest them.

I was surprised when Thomas chose motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) as his plant for the interview – I just didn't see it coming!  But as you’ll see, it’s obvious how much he loves motherwort, and he shares so much about this wonderful plant’s gifts – including his recipe for Tension Relief Tincture.

By the way, if you are or know someone who suffers from PMS, this is one recipe you don’t want to miss!  (You can find the link to the beautifully illustrated recipe card here.)

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► A lesser-known herbal preparation that can be made with motherwort

► How to recognize high-quality cut-and-dried motherwort

► Five tips for growing and harvesting your own motherwort

► The main health conditions for which motherwort’s gifts shine

► When you should (and shouldn’t) use motherwort

► Why Thomas is passionate about herb farming

► and so much more…

For those of you who don’t know him, Thomas Avery Garran has been studying plant medicine for over 30 years. Yerba Mansa with Cathy Skipper15 Dec 202100:37:31

Listen in to the holistic healing journey of my soul sister, Cathy Skipper, and the part yerba mansa played after she received a diagnosis of cervical cancer just one day after moving to a new continent. You’ll also receive access to Cathy’s guided audio journey, a downloadable meditation you experience, accompanied by yerba mansa.

Cathy Skipper is an herbalist, aromatherapist, teacher and wounded healer. After living and working in the herbal world in France for 25 years, she came to live in Taos, New Mexico in 2015 where she lives and works with her husband, holistic psychiatrist Dr. Florian Birkmayer. Together, they run a private practice that combines aromas and Jungian analysis. They also have a school called AromaGnosis where they use a powerful combination of aromas, Jungian psychology and personal journeying to help students deepen their relationship with themselves and learn to navigate and understand the power of the unconscious realms.

Listen in for:

► How Cathy was led to yerba mansa (Timestamp: 13:11)

► Why it’s important to incorporate all aspects of the self when you’re healing (Timestamp: 18:02)

► An important consideration for essential oils (Timestamp: 29:56)

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“By really spending all this time in nature and connecting to the plants… what they taught me was that I needed to know my own signature, not just to understand the plants and their signature and what they know, but I needed to know who I was and my sense of belonging. [Plants] have been my best teachers about what I needed to do to heal myself.” (Timestamp: 35:05)

I loved spending time with Cathy and I’m excited to share our conversation with you!

Maia’s books build on this foundation, eloquently translating patterns and metaphors from the natural world to help modern seekers understand and grow within their own lives. I loved spending time with Maia and I’m delighted to share our conversation with you!

Rosemary with Christophe Bernard17 Nov 202100:42:05

I am so excited to bring you this conversation about rosemary, the queen of antioxidants, with brilliant herbalist and teacher, Christophe Bernard. In this episode, Christophe is sharing a wonderful way that you can enjoy the wonderful, aromatic taste of rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) with roasted or barbecued food, while at the same time, helping to buffer the oxidative stress which results when we eat that yummy, browned food.

If you’re not already familiar with Christophe, he lives in southern France (Provence) where he spends his time picking, growing and recommending herbs as a health practitioner. He has written three books and teaches at one of the oldest herbal schools in France. He also offers a set of online classes on how to make and use herbal preparations. His blog AltheaProvence has become a reference for plant lovers around the French-speaking world.

You’ll come away charmed by the story of Christophe’s journey to herbalism, his enthusiasm, and his willingness to keep learning. You'll also discover the many gifts of rosemary and receive Christophe’s recipe for Rosemary Deglazing and BBQ Spray, along with several tips and variations for making it.

Listen in for:

► How embracing humility and imperfection and remaining open to new information can produce big results (Timestamps 08:44 and 35:26)

► Tips for working with rosemary, including tasty flavor combinations for a tea that’s brimming with protective antioxidants (Timestamp 20:29)

► A classic beginner’s mistake that you can avoid (Timestamp 39:05)

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“To me, rosemary represents resistance and resilience, survival. When you see it growing in this little crack of a rock, I mean, there's no soil, there's nothing, and it's not raining during the summer here. And yet that rosemary is growing and it's aromatic. What it gives back is just so strong and amazing and I really studied that plant because it seemed to be doing a lot of things as an anti-inflammatory.” (Timestamp: 14:35)

It was such a pleasure to spend time with Christophe and I’m delighted to share our conversation with you!

Roses with Rebecca Altman20 Oct 202100:37:18

Roses are a sensuous delight, but they also have many healing gifts. In this episode, Rebecca Altman and I discuss the very special gift roses have for reconnecting us with our core selves, even when we’re feeling tense and stressed. We also discuss the physical health benefits of rosehips and you’ll receive Rebecca’s rosehip liqueur recipe.

Rebecca loves connecting people: to the earth, to plants, to each other, and to themselves. The underlying purpose behind all of her work is to help people remember the wholeness of their being.

Here are two of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“I have started to think of rose as a plant that reconnects us with our heart, with the heart of who we are. And it sort of relaxes the parts of us that we hold so tightly that prevent us from reconnecting with our heart selves. The reason, I think, that it often brings such a deep emotional reaction is that what people are feeling is themselves.” (Timestamp: 13:52)

“I used to think that I needed a million plant best friends and the longer I practice, the more that I’m just like… I use the same [five or ten] plants over and over and over and my relationship with them deepens.” (Timestamp: 32:39)

It was a special pleasure to spend time with Rebecca and I’m excited to share our conversation with you!

Walnuts with Nina Lawrin06 Oct 202100:43:52

In this episode, Nina Lawrin and I explore the many benefits walnuts bring to us, including some that may sound a bit surprising at first listen (but which I think you’ll love exploring for yourself).

Also, you don’t want to miss Nina’s delicious recipe for Raw Vegan Walnut and Coffee Cheesecake-Torte, which is her twist on a Ukrainian walnut torte that is traditionally eaten at Christmas, weddings, and other celebrations.

Nina is an ethnobotanist, urban forager, permaculture designer, artist, folk herbalist, Fulbright alumna and just a general foodie at heart. She has a lot of wisdom to share, both from her studies and from her own journey with plants.

Here’s one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation, in Nina’s own words: “While I was in Ukraine, I realized the cultural importance of the foods that we eat and our access to them – these reminders of home – and even through immigration, how these culturally salient plants come and move through us as we move throughout the world.”

It was a great pleasure to spend time with Nina and I’m excited to share our conversation with you!

Blueberries with Anna Rósa Róbertsdóttir29 Sep 202100:32:39

Listen in as Anna Rósa Róbertsdóttir and I explore the many gifts of blueberries. Delicious and rich in health benefits, blueberries are a pleasurable way to incorporate plant medicine into our lives. Anna Rósa has generously shared two fabulous blueberry breakfast bowl recipes for you to enjoy and also a handout with research into the health benefits of blueberries.

A medical herbalist, Anna Rósa has been running her own clinic in Iceland for over 30 years. To paraphrase one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation, although of course, you have to change the diet and other lifestyle factors, herbs are really, really powerful. She has seen them help people with supposedly incurable diseases to regain wellness time and time again in the course of her clinical practice.

It was such a pleasure to spend time with Anna Rósa and I’m excited to share our conversation with you!

Burdock Root with Selima Harleston Lust22 Sep 202100:27:54

Herbs have so many gifts! Most of us start out from a framework of, “What herb is good for ‘x’ symptom or disease?” While that’s natural, there’s so much more that we can explore.

Burdock is no exception!

Listen in as Selima Harleston Lust shares how the deep roots of burdock became a friend and ally as she traversed her healing journey from trauma. You’ll also receive Selima’s fabulous recipe for Liver Love Hot Chocolate!

Although everyone’s path will look a bit different, I hope you’ll draw some inspiration from what Selima shares about how a relationship with a plant can look and function.

In Selima’s words, “I want people to explore and to see what invitation the plant is going to extend because, yes – we have all the constituents and the herbal actions and all of the science – yet none of that is going to speak to what you’re going to learn about yourself through your relationship with a plant.”

I loved spending time with Selima and I’m excited to share our conversation with you!
