Healthy Soil, Healthy Food, Healthy People | Featuring Annie Brown30 Aug 202400:41:36

This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we are joined by the passionate and insightful Vice President of Development at the Rodale Institute, Annie Brown. As a true specialist surrounding all things organic agriculture, Annie shares with us how the Rodale Institute was founded during the boom of chemicals being introduced to the farming industry and how one businessman's intuition led him from the hustle and bustle of NYC to rural Pennsylvania; where he studied agriculture practices of Indigenous populations that grew successful crops without the need for synthetic chemicals. From here, J.I. Rodale taught himself and his family how to effectively grow food without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This led to the founding of the Rodale Institute in 1947, and the revolutionary term,"regenerative agriculture", was coined.

From the Rodale Institute's inception nearly 80 years ago, the fight for accessible organic agriculture persists strongly in the present day. Through partnerships and consulting with like-minded businesses, Rodale creates a clear path forward for those seeking to make the crucial transition into organic agriculture by providing research, farmer training, and consumer education. Mountain Rose Herbs is a proud partner of the Rodale Institute. Together, we are working to create a food system in harmony with nature by paving the way for the future of healthy soil, healthy food, healthy people, and healthy planet.

As always, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure and are so honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Your questions, ideas, and who you want to hear from are an invaluable piece to our podcast. Send us an email at podcast@mountainroseherbs.com to let us know what solutions we should uncover next within the vast world of herbalism.

Learn more about Annie and the Rodale Institute:

🌿Annie Brown is the Vice President of Development at Rodale Institute. She has been working with the Institute since 2012. She and her team oversee all fundraising activities for the organization, including public and private grants, individual donations, and corporate partnerships. Her passion for organic was born from her Missouri childhood where she was raised five miles in the country surrounded on all four sides by chemical/conventional farms. Her mother's multiple bouts with cancer throughout her life were what woke Annie to connecting environment and diet to overall human health.

Before her work at Rodale Institute, Annie had been involved in the food industry in various capacities ranging from food writer, cooking school co-director, co-founder of a handmade pasta company, sales/marketing director of a Colorado artisanal pasta company, food blogger, and was formerly a partner in a boutique Boulder PR firm focusing on restaurants and specialty food products. Her passion for food began as a young girl where she learned how to cook in her mother's country kitchen. She created her first cookbook at age six and made her very first dollar selling handmade pimento cheese sandwiches at a local public auction at age eight.

Decolonizing our Herbal Roots, with Mimi Hernandez | Tea Talks with Jiling05 May 202200:52:10

Savor this mouthwatering and plant-connected conversation with one of the leaders of our herbal community, Mimi Hernandez, Executive Director of the American Herbalists Guild, and homesteader near Asheville, NC. Mimi shares colorful tales of rolling up invasive honeysuckle and planting native seeds across three acres of land, power-washing five gallon bucketfuls of tunas (prickly pear fruit) to make hot-pink prickly pear cakes, writing an herbal for National Geographic, making herbal rum infusions like her Mexican grandmother, and balancing paperwork-ridden leadership with unadulterated time with her family, plants, and chickens.

Mimi has dedicated her life to advocating for both traditional and professional herbal pathways while building cultural bridges of understanding. Inspired by her Mexican-Colombian background and the Abuelas in her life, her roots spring from Latinx folk herbal traditions. Mimi has mentored many students of clinical and community herbalism over the years. Enjoy learning more about her adventures from grandma's kitchen into academia, and eventually back into the kitchen again.

How to Make Botanical Incense | Featuring Jiling Lin28 Apr 202200:39:21

This week's Herbal Radio podcast corresponds with a recently released blog post and video tutorial by our good friend, Jiling Lin. A licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and yoga teacher, Jiling poetically walks us through the process of making our own botanical incense using a Traditional Chinese Medicine incense formulation, Xiao Yao San (逍遙散) or "Free and Easy Wanderer". In Jiling's words, "making our own incense provides a tactile connection with the land, medicine, and our bioregional terroir. Mixing and shaping incense by hand, we reconnect with our indigenous roots of shaping the earth, building rituals, and serenading our ancestors with songs carried on spiraling smoke".

Stinging Nettle & Poison Oak Plant Walk | Featuring Shana Lipner Grover08 Apr 202200:25:52

This podcast is a combination of two separate talks from a pre-recorded plant walk led by Shana Lipner Grover at Mount Pisgah in Eugene, Oregon. A talented clinical herbalist, field botanist, and nutrition educator, Shana introduces us to two plants abundant throughout the Pacific Northwest, stinging nettle and poison oak.

Perhaps not outwardly considered allies as their touch can occasionally induce minor skin irritations, Shana explains how these plants can become our friends when properly identified and treated with respect. Engaging and informative, Shana reviews the botany, habitat, safety, and uses of nettle and poison oak and teaches us that by paying close attention to these plants we can be in relationship with them and learn from them.

Shana was a student of award-winning author Michael Moore and also one of Mountain Rose Herbs' favorite herbalists, Howie Brounstein. Today, she is the director and primary educator of Sage Country Herbs School of Botanical Studies in San Diego, CA.

You can learn more about Shana at Sage Country Herbs School and by visiting her on Instagram @sagecountryherbs.

The Work of the United Plant Savers: Why Sustainable Herb Sourcing Matters | Featuring Susan Leopold (Rerelease)01 Apr 202200:54:30

Here at Mountain Rose Herbs, sustainability is the only business we know. In addition to sustainability, organic agriculture and ethical harvesting practices have always been at the forefront of our decision-making. As many plants are increasingly under pressure from climate change, habitat loss, over harvesting, and more, we look to shed more light on the topic of Endangered Plants. Susan Leopold's lecture on The Work of the United Plant Savers: Why Sustainable Herb Sourcing Matters comes from our Free Herbalism Project archive. It was recorded live in Eugene, Oregon on October 9, 2016. Although years have passed since this lecture, the topic remains vitally relevant.

Susan Leopold, PhD, is an ethnobotanist and passionate defender of biodiversity. Over the past 20 years, Susan has worked extensively with indigenous peoples in Peru and Costa Rica. She is the Executive Director of United Plant Savers and Director of the Sacred Seeds Project. Prior to working at United Plant Savers, she was a librarian at the Oak Spring Garden Library, specializing in digitizing rare herbals and botanical travel manuscripts. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Botanical Dimensions and the Center for Sustainable Economy. She is an advisory board member of American Botanical Council. She is a proud member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia and the author of the children's book Isabella's Peppermint Flower, teaching about Virginia's botanical history. She lives on and manages a productive farm, the Indian Pipe Botanical Sanctuary, with her three children in Virginia. There she raises goats, peacocks, and herbs. She is an avid recreational tree climber, in love with the canopy just as much as the herbs of the forest floor.

Energetics of Aphrodisiacs Part 2 | Featuring jim mcdonald (Rerelease)17 Feb 202201:21:16

This lecture comes from our Free Herbalism Project archive. We shared Pt. 1 of this 2-part lecture last week before Valentine's Day! Talking about aphrodisiacs seemed like a great topic this time of year. And let's be real, we could all use more love in our lives anytime of year, whether it's coming from people or plant allies.

Listen along as jim mcdonald dives into aphrodisiacs, a popular and often problematic term. Looking at lists of plants deemed "aphrodisiacs," we see everything from strong herbs (yohimbe) to culinary spices (ginger), from adaptogens (ashwangandha) to antispasmodics (kava). There are a lot of herbs that could be considered aphrodisiacs and as we'll learn, what works for one person may not work for someone else. jim talks about what indications make certain herbs appropriate for certain people and offers engaging ideas to ponder with your loved ones. jim mcdonald is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter, a medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves. Learn more about jim and his educational opportunities by visiting herbcraft.podia.com

This presentation was recorded live at the Free Herbalism Project in Eugene, OR on August 29, 2014. jim references 14-pages of notes from his lecture that are available on our website. Unfortunately, we don't have that document available anymore. Please reach out to jim and he'd be happy to connect!

Energetics of Aphrodisiacs Part 1 | Featuring jim mcdonald (Rerelease)10 Feb 202201:01:17

We pulled this lecture from our Free Herbalism Project archive, just in time for Valentine's Day! Listen along as jim mcdonald dives into aphrodisiacs, a popular and often problematic term. jim leans into his broad and inclusive definition of an aphrodisiac as "something that encourages greater sensation and presence and enjoyment of sexuality." Looking at lists of plants deemed "aphrodisiacs," we see everything from strong herbs (yohimbe) to culinary spices (ginger), from adaptogens (ashwangandha) to antispasmodics (kava). There are a lot of herbs that could be considered aphrodisiacs and as we'll learn, what works for one person may not work for someone else. jim talks about what indications make certain herbs appropriate for certain people and offers engaging ideas to ponder with your loved ones.

The one and only, jim mcdonald is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter, a medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves. We hope you enjoy this episode on Herbal Radio.

Plant Stories | Featuring Erik Burke with Friends of Trees31 May 202401:11:48

This week on Herbal Radio, we sit down for an educational and thought-provoking conversation with our long-time friend and local Oregonian partner, Erik Burke. Erik is the Eugene Director of Friends of Trees, and has been a passionate advocate for trees his whole life. 🌲

Since 1989, Friends of Trees has planted over 950,000 trees and native shrubs in neighborhoods and natural areas in six counties across two states. Today, we'll learn from Erik about the importance of introducing native tree and plant species throughout our communities, and how you can sink your hands into the soil and plant successful and thriving trees in your own backyard. As always, thank you for joining us, and we'll see you next week for another botanical adventure!

🌿 Erik Burke has lived in Eugene and Springfield for most of his life and has been volunteering planting and caring for trees and natural areas there since 1986. He now directs the Friends of Trees office in Eugene. Erik spends his spare time with his family, gardening, and getting outside around Oregon.

Erik attended K-12 in Eugene, went to Lane Community College, and received a BA from the UO, and a MA in applied anthropology from OSU. Erik is an ISA-certified arborist, and municipal specialist, has the tree risk assessment qualification, and is a licensed landscape construction professional. Erik began regular paid work at age 7 and has worked in construction, forestry, agriculture, the nursery trade, social science research, and social work. Erik currently has a 2nd job working as an arborist for Sperry Tree Care.

Erik began volunteering with trees in 1986 with Friends of Eugene's Urban Forest and was a part-time volunteer until 2002, when he joined the board of directors of Eugene Tree Foundation (ETF), serving over 7 years as secretary, treasurer, vice president, and president. In 2009, Erik led the move for ETF to be consolidated within Friends of Trees and became paid staff at FOT as Eugene Director in 2011.

Shawn Donnille's Interview on The Holistic Herbalism Podcast28 Oct 202100:51:41

Our friends at The Holistic Herbalism Podcast recently interviewed Shawn Donnille, Mountain Rose Herbs' owner and CEO. Clinical herbalists, Katja Swift and Ryn Midura, host this informative and conversational podcast. They sat down with Shawn to talk about sustainability and adjusting pricing to reflect the true cost of herbs–especially those at-risk herbs like rhodiola, American ginseng and goldenseal. Their discussion focused on different sustainability efforts around sourcing high-quality, organic herbs, including how sometimes it's best to find herbal alternatives so that we're not overtaxing threatened plant populations. Make yourself a cup of tea, sit back, and enjoy!

Plant Stories | Featuring Howie Brounstein & Steven Yeager (Rerelease)17 May 202400:58:57

Hello plant people! It's been a year and some change since we launched our Plant Stories series on Herbal Radio, and we thought what better time to reshare our first-ever episode in this series than during the sunny and blooming spring season! 🌷

Plant Stories is all about the heartfelt, fun, entertaining, educational, inspiring, and personal plant stories that stand out to our guests. Tune in to hear from esteemed herbalists, nature-based artists, and plant-lovers to learn about a specific plant, hear a touching tale, bask in a poem, or possibly dive into some folklore.

Our good friends, Howie Brounstein and Steven Yeager stopped by our podcast studio back in January 2023 to record the inaugural episode. Having taught together for decades at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies, Howie & Steven showcase their unique teaching style, philosophy, and humor as they banter about their personal and professional plant connections. Always entertaining, we hope you enjoy the many plant stories and botanical song beats brought to you by Howie & Steven.

Howie Brounstein has taught botany, herbalism, and wildcrafting extensively for nearly four decades, including at such herbal establishments as the Michael Moore's Southwest School of Botanical Medicine. He is the co-owner and a primary instructor of the Columbines School of Botanical Studies and has a clinical practice in Eugene, Oregon. He is well known for his inspiring in-depth teaching style and his passionate love of plants.

Steven Yeager moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1994 and has been rooted in Eugene ever since. He has been an employee of Mountain Rose Herbs since 2007 and recently became the Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs (formerly the Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs, congratulations, Steven!). Steven Yeager has been exploring Oregon's wild places and studying the Pacific Northwest's native flora since 1995, botanizing, wildcrafting, and preparing herbal preparations for himself and his family. Steven is also an herbal educator and former co-owner of the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. His years of working in the plant world have contributed enormously to Steven's ability to direct quality control, laboratory operations, and regulatory compliance at Mountain Rose Herbs, where a thorough knowledge of plant identification, GMP and FSMA regulations, and herbalism is essential. He believes cultivating a relationship with plants and the natural world is vital for a healthy existence on this planet In 2011, Steven became an elected trustee of the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) and is currently participating with many of AHPA's committees. He also serves on the Board of the AHPA Foundation for Education and Research on Botanicals, United Plant Savers, and the Native Plant Society of Oregon. When not at work or volunteering with various non-profits Steven enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, hiking, camping, wildcrafting, and botanizing in the Cascade Mountains.

Visit the Columbines School of Botanical Studies website.

Organoleptics & Phytochemical Connections with Lisa Ganora | Tea Talks with Jiling16 Sep 202100:56:16

Enjoy Lisa Ganora's conversational storytelling as she explores the connection between our ancient organoleptic skills as mammalian creatures, and modern research in phytochemistry. We touch on herbalists' roles as land stewards and water protectors during our climate change crisis. We laugh as Lisa demonstrates her scratch, snort, sniff, savor, and spit method of organoleptic connections. We discuss the simple yet important role that sitting with plants has, before reading plant textbooks.

Lisa Ganora began studying traditional Western herbalism in the early '80s. After practicing as a Wise Woman tradition community herbalist for a decade, Lisa returned to UNCA and graduated summa cum laude with multiple awards in biology and chemistry. After graduation she focused on studying herbal constituents (pharmacognosy and phytochemistry).

You might know Lisa Ganora as the author of Herbal Constituents, 2nd Ed., a popular textbook on herbal phytochemistry for natural health practitioners. Or, she might be a familiar name from herbal conferences, or as the 2012-2020 director of the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism. Learn about Lisa's new projects stewarding  Elderberry's Farm, a Rocky Mountain Herbal Education Center in Paonia, CO. Lisa also teaches a comprehensive distance learning course on herbal constituents and formulates for the dietary supplements industry.
