Herb Your Enthusiasm – Kalamunda Garden Festival 2026 (Part 2)

In Part 2 of our coverage from the Kalamunda Garden Festival, we continue our conversations with three passionate guests who each bring a unique perspective to the world of gardening, horticulture, and the tools that support them.

First, I sit down with Chloe Thomson, founder of Sprout School, horticulturist, educator, presenter, writer, and passionate advocate for gardening as a tool for environmental and personal wellbeing. Chloe shares her experiences helping people build confidence in the garden, encouraging biodiversity in urban landscapes, and fostering deeper connections between people and nature. Our conversation explores the power of gardening to create healthier communities, support local wildlife, and inspire the next generation of gardeners.

Next, I chat with Jamie from East to West Tools, a specialist supplier of premium Japanese gardening and woodworking tools. Jamie shares the history and philosophy behind traditional Japanese toolmaking, exploring how centuries-old craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a culture of continual refinement have influenced the design of some of the world's finest hand tools. We discuss why Japanese secateurs, saws, and pruning equipment have developed such a loyal following among gardeners, arborists, and horticultural professionals, and what Australian gardeners can learn from the Japanese approach to working with plants.

Finally, I speak with John Colwill, Vice President of the Araluen Botanic Park Foundation. John offers insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Western Australian gardens in a changing climate. We discuss water-wise gardening principles, plant selection, landscape resilience, and the important role botanic gardens play in conservation, education, and connecting communities with the natural world.

Recorded live at the 2026 Kalamunda Garden Festival, this episode showcases the knowledge, experience, and passion that make the festival such a valuable gathering for gardeners of all skill levels.

I spent the day soaking up the sights, sounds, and soil-stained goodness of the 2025 Perth Garden Show at McCallum Park, great vibes!
Right by the Swan River, the place was packed with plant lovers, growers, weekend diggers, and sustainability legends from across WA.

There were lush display gardens to explore, passionate stallholders sharing tips, and loads of hands-on wisdom flying around—from native planting and permaculture to composting, worm farms, and water-wise tricks.
The Rewilding Zone was buzzing all day, where I got to set up shop next to Mel from Rewilding Suburbia and chat with some inspiring humans about bringing nature back into our suburbs.

#69 NO-HASSLE BEE-KEEPING AND LABOUR-FREE HONEY IN THE SUBURBS WITH CEDAR ANDERSON OF FLOWHIVE28 Apr 202400:46:13

Send us Fan Mail

This podcast episode, Sammy will be featuring Australian Entrepeneur; Cedar Anderson, the co-inventor of the FlowHive.

Flowhive is an innovative new bee-hive system that has revolutionised home-bee keeping.
From the outside, Flow Hives look like a regular commercial beehive, that is, the traditional "wooden box" containing multiple frames which support the bees as they create their honeycomb.
In these traditional beehives, when the honey is ready for harvest. the frames are taken out and spun in a centrifuge system to extract honey.

Now, enter FLOW Hives.
Flow hives feature an ingenious system of pre-inserted, pre-molded frames made up of hundreds of individual hexagonal cells which mimic a natural honeycomb structure.
Once the bees are introduced, they then discover these cells, fill them with honey.

When all the cells are filled, the owner of the FlowHive can then turn a special key to fracture each of the cells to releasing all the honey at once.
The honey then slowly flows out of a tap and into glass collection jars. After collection the special key it turned again, re-setting the molds to their original position, to be filled with honey once again.

This Ingenious and elegant re-imagining of a beehive eliminates the otherwise messy, time-consuming and sometimes dangerous process of honey extraction.

With a FlowHive, there is next to no need to disturb, then pacify your bees and no need to use a centrifuge before you can enjoy the fruits of your bees' labour.

As you'll hear, FlowHive is one of the most significant business success stories to come out of the Northern Rivers region in recent years.

So, thanks friends and enjoy this podcast with Cedar Anderson of Byron Bay.

#59 USING NATURAL CYCLES TO BUILD MASS TOP-SOIL W/WILL HARRIS OF WHITE OAK PASTURES11 Jan 202400:57:14

Send us Fan Mail

Episode #59 Herb your enthusiasm.
Today's guest is ex-JRE guest; Will Harris of Bluffton, Georgia in the states..

Will is a 4th generation cattle farmer and current owner of white oak pastures, which has been owned by his family since 1866.

Across it's long history, white oak pastures has gone through many iterations.
Upon inheriting his farm as a young man, will operated the farm in alignment with an industrial model of farming, utilising tonnes of Petro-chemical fertiliser, heavy chemical spray regimes to control weeds and "problem organisms" as well as intensive feed-lot operations and heavy anti-biotic regimens for his livestock.

As you'll hear in the podcast, a single brief but powerful moment in time one afternoon, lead him to reconsider the path he was going down with respect to the "kill and control" style of farming he had become accustomed to on the farm.
following this personal realisation- at great financial expense, will began to transition away from a typical industrial model of farming and towards am ecological/regenerative model, and one that honoured and respected life in all its forms and the relationships between them.

20 years later and white oak pastures is now a world leader in profitable, sustainable farming and one of the few sustainable regenerative farms in his state.
the multiple 10's of inches of rich, dark top soil that white oaks has created since moving to a regenerative model is something to behold and instead of spending his time figuring out how to kill organisms, will now thinks about the best ways to keep things alive.

Enjoy this cracking pod with Will Harris!

#55 THE KING OF NO-DIG - CHARLES DOWDING!!02 Dec 202300:41:13

Send us Fan Mail

Since the early 1980's, Charles has been instrumental in popularising the "no-dig" style of gardening, beliveving that the secret to ultimate yield when it comes to growing your own food is to leave the soil minimally disturbed or unmolested.

Charles is cambridge-educated, holding a degree in geography, yet he has never pursued a career in academia, instead, he has only ever wanted to work with the land, having spent the last 40 years building the productive capacity of market gardens in a number of different countries and regions.

It's literally impossible to sum up what this man has done for gardening, i just feel honoured that he's taken the time to talk to me about his rich life, spent unlocking the secrets of garden yield using a minimally-disruptive and even soil-regenerative approach of no-dig.

If you need to know anything more about the amazing Charles, give him a google or follow him on instagram at charles_dowding.

Send us Fan Mail

New pod alert!
It was amazing to chat to Permaculture legend and Gardening Australia presenter - Hannah Moloney. We nerded out on growing food in cold climates, community-spirited action to foster climate hope and her recent month of busily promoting her brand-new book: Good life growing, available now at all good bookstores around Australia and online.

This is still unreal to me that I have this podcast vehicle to connect to such bright and world-changing agents like Hannah. I want to thank each and every person who has ever listened to a HYE podcast. For what it's worth, your interest in these pod episodes has changed my life. Love you all.

GARDEN NERDS!
EXTREMELY special podcast dropped, for your listening pleasure.
A whole day of chats with Sam and the absolute who's who of gardening and horticulture in Australia. I feel insanely lucky.

This day was about 4 weeks in the making and was somehow simultaneously the best and most stressful experience of the year.

I will have to go into detail about the lead-up to the festival in another pod, but the actual Sunday exceeded absolutely every expectation and Andrew and Mandy hit it out of the park, as usual.

Enjoy these chats with Millie Ross, Derryn Thorpe, Diego Oliveira, Phil Dudman and other local garden legends!

Yew (tree)!!
Sammy.

Send us Fan Mail

Very enjoyable and informative chat with the awesome Diago of Thefunguywa.

Diago cultivates choice mushroom varieties on his business premises in Morley, pumping out grow-boxes of predominantly Lions mane and oyster mushrooms, just to name a few.
Diago's wonder and enthusiasm for all things fungi is contagious and in addition to the edible varieties, we found ourselves talking about many other wondrous facets of fungi, including the cancer-fighting power of Turkeytails and the cognitive benefits of consuming lion's mane fungus.

Enjoy herbers.

#41 PERTH’S BEST MULCH PRODUCTS W/TRENT BALJEU - DSATCO19 Jul 202300:56:31

Send us Fan Mail

Have a listen to this cracker of a pod with Trent Baljeu - MD of DSATCO mulch - One of WA's best known family-owned garden businesses.
Lupin is the most well-known of their 5-product range. It is 100% organic and so rich in nitrogen that it can virtually replace a synthetic nitrogen feed for your kitchen gardens.
We also spoke for a while about the agricultural history of Wongan hills, where dsatco HQ is located- might be a good listen for all the farmers and ex-farmers that listen to HYE.

Don't forget to rate and review this podcast and tell your garden-mad friends.

HAPPY 40TH PODCAST!
Enjoy a forgotten pod from mid-may, where Sam is feeling worse for wear after a night of drunken birthday karaoke and Casey is sleep deprived/overworked and grumpy.  We were consummate professionals however and limped, I mean powered through another juicy pod.
This one is (very) loosely themed around winter food foresty/urban farming.

Enjoy squad.
