I'm often asked why we had a home birth first time around. Wasn't I scared something would go wrong? Truth is, I was much more fearful about having to give birth in a hospital. In 2019 a review into chiropractic care for children was launched in Victoria. The Victorian health minister was already making assumptions about the outcome when she made the announcement. These assumptions were very obviously not positively geared towards chiropractic. Part of the review was an online survey. Both the public and health practitioners from all around Australia were invited to participate. An overwhelming 21,824 submissions were received from members of the public who had accessed chiropractic spinal care for a child under 12 years. This is the largest number of submissions received to date through Engage.Vic, which is the Victorian Government's Online Consultation platform. The public responses indicated very strong consumer satisfaction. Of all respondents, 99.7% reported a positive experience with the chiropractic care of their children. The overwhelming majority of parents reported that chiropractic care helped their child, with 98% indicating that their child improved after treatment. This shows a patient satisfaction that many health professions would be envious of. So what exactly do chiropractors do with babies that results in such a group of satisfied parents? Today I'm speaking with Dr Catherine Kenyon, chiropractor of twelve years who is extremely passionate about helping families achieve optimal health and wellbeing through her holistic style of chiropractic. Catherine has such a craving for learning, in her first year out of university she began a three year course in paediatric chiropractic to expand her knowledge of this unique age group. At the same time she also studied attended weekend seminars in Applied Kinesiology. Once finishing both those extended courses, Catherine began her journey into another chiropractic technique – NET. These three qualifications give her a unique and very holistic approach to her patients health. Catherine has a particular interest in helping families of young babies learn all they can about optimising development from birth; through her discussions on developmental milestones, to her tummy time workshops and everything in between. Growing up on a farm, I loved calfing season. We'd check on the cows each day and admired nature unfolding from a distance, as the new borns calves who had entered the world. Having experienced 4 glorious homebirths along the way, Julie arrived fired up with a passion to serve birthing families and to support women in reclaiming their own birth-right and birth power. She completed her doula training in 2005 and since then has served hundreds of families in her capacity as birth and post-natal doula. It is the passion of Julie's life to support women in realizing their personal power and learning to wield it un-apologetically. It is the joy of Julie's life to be allied with a remarkable cohort of creative and inspiring women & men who are a force of love and change in the world. Julie is the eternal student and constant journey-woman, always seeking, learning, discovering and expecting. As a birth rights passionista, Julie has been at the fore-front of activism to retain and reclaim birthing rights and choices in Australia and globally. Are in in tune with your personal cycle? Do you know when you when you're nearing ovulation and menstruation? If so, how do you track your cycle? Do you let an app decide when your fertile window is near, or when you are due for your monthly bleed? The issue with period tracking apps is they are based on a text book 28 day cycle, with ovulation on day 14. This is not measuring your hormonal and temperature changes that control your personal cycle and fertility window. It's likely you've heard about your microbiome. You know, the good bugs that live on your skin, in your gut, lungs and yes, even in your vagina. We're made up of 90% bacteria - they out number us by 10:1! Yep, there's more of them than cells in your body. So it makes sense that we take good care of them and create an environment where these healthy bugs want to hang out in. Besides, these microbes are the ones needed in strength to provide us with immune health, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial functions. The beneficial bacteria on your skin also promote a balanced, healthy complexion. In your gut, your microbes specifically allow you to digest your foods, absorb your nutrients and allow adequate detoxification from toxins and wastes. Yes, they help move your poo through your colon and promote a regular and complete toilet stop. Society teaches us to be hush about early pregnancy, so an expecting mum you may go through the first trimester feeling confused about what is normal, suffering through morning sickness in silence and struggling with the ever-changing lifestyle adjustments a mum-to-be is advised to make. There is often a constant worry and anxiety around the safety of baby, especially in the event of past complications and in the devastating event of a pregnancy loss, the mum and dad are often left to suffer alone. Did you know that Lindt & Sprüngli, the renowned Swiss chocolatier, is currently facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States concerning allegations of elevated levels of heavy metals lead and cadmium in its dark chocolate products. The lawsuit, initiated in February 2022 was spurred by a 2022 Consumer Reports investigation that tested 28 dark chocolate bars sold in the U.S., revealing that certain Lindt products (including 70% and 85% cacao bars) contained higher-than-acceptable levels of these heavy metals! So today, I'm going to dive into lead, the sources (including chocolate), impacts of exposure and what we can do to both prevent high lead exposure and detox our bodies daily, from inevitable sources.
