Pessah in the Shadow of The War

Today, I want to talk with you about Passover.

First of all, Passover has several names in Hebrew, and each one tells us something about the holiday.

ื—ื’ ื”ืื‘ื™ื‘ โ€“ ื‘ื’ืœืœ ืฉื”ื•ื ืงื•ืจื” ื‘ืื‘ื™ื‘, Spring Festival โ€” because it takes place in spring,

ื—ื’ ื”ืžืฆื•ืช โ€“ ื›ื™ ืื•ื›ืœื™ื ืžืฆื•ืช, Matzah Festival โ€” because we eat matzah,

Freedom Festival โ€” because the people of Israel went from slavery to freedom.

In the days before the holiday, everyone cleans their home thoroughly and tries to get rid of all chametz (leavened food).

Some families even eat lots of cakes, pasta, and bread in the week before โ€” just to finish everything.

Another important thing: during Passover, people cook special dishes.

The funniest is in mixed families, with both Mizrahi and Ashkenazi traditions:

You can see matzah ball soup on the table as a starter,

And then leek patties from Turkish tradition,

Spicy Moroccan fish and many other delicious dishes.

But this year, everything feels a bit different. You canโ€™t talk about Passover without talking about the war.

In Israel, many families will have empty seats around the table.

Some soldiers are still on the front line and wonโ€™t be able to celebrate with their families,

And some will not return at all.

Maybe even during Passover, we will hear sirens and rockets.

And maybe some families will hold the Seder in a shelter?

But no matter where, we will all sit together on Seder night,

ื–ื” ืจื’ืข ืžืื•ื“ ื—ืฉื•ื‘ ื•ื™ืคื”: Itโ€™s a very important and beautiful moment:

We read together โ€” children and adults โ€” the Haggadah to remember the story of the people of Israel.

I want to tell you about our daily routine during wartime in Israel.

We are at home most of the time. Every few hours we receive an alert on our phone.

It tells us that we need to stay near a protected space because a siren will sound soon.

This happens several times a day and also several times at night.

ื–ื” ืœื ืคืฉื•ื˜. Itโ€™s not easy.

We are all very tired and a bit nervous.

I have a safe room on my floor.

We go there every time there is a siren, together with all my neighbors.

There are young couples, babies, small children, new immigrants from different places in the world, and a cute couple with a dog.

Because we spend a lot of time every day in the safe room, we now know each other much better.

We all know where each person works in normal times, what they like to do when they are not working, and what they eat on Fridays.

The children donโ€™t have school or kindergarten.

They really miss their friends and their routine.

We all hope that soon we will be able to return to normal life.
