| Heartwork - Surah Kahf - 1 | 12 Feb 2023 | 01:00:50 | |
Tonight's first session after our Ramadan series begins tonight, as we explore another milestone chapter of the Quran - Surah al Kahf, the chapter of The Cave. The Prophet ﷺ narrated a number of hadith about the virtues of Surah Kahf, teaching us that for the person who recites it on Friday, they will be immune from trials (small and large), and they will be the bearers of a light that will illuminate for and from them from week to week.
The virtues of this Surah are accompanied by the timeless lessons that are contained within it. The detailed explanation of the meanings of the Quran have identified four major sections/themes to this Surah, each of which carry its own specific blessed meanings and benefit for the reader.

| Heartwork in Ramadan - Part 3 of Ramadan Salvation from The Fire | 12 Feb 2023 | 00:42:06 | |
Tonight’s session will be part 3 of our conversation on the different parts of Ramadan - the days of mercy, the days of forgiveness, and the days of salvation from the fire.
Everyone has different focuses in life - Ramadan teaches us what our focus should be: on our relationship with Allah and for a successful status in the afterlife.
What are some of the things we can do go keep our focus where it matters most? How can we be convinced of our afterlife meaning more than anything else?

Heartwork: welcome home! Monday night is back with another evening of good food and good company, as we continue to explore the lessons and layers of the Quran.

| Heartwork - Surah Fatiha 8 | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:54:00 | |
We're continuing our discussion on Surah Al Fatiha, as we reach the concluding passage of the chapter.
In this verse, Allah references three groups of people - the first of which we try to belong to, and the latter two that we desperately avoid being a part of. The descriptions that Allah gave each group is short-yet-far-reaching, with layers of depth that we can uncover through discussion.

| Heartwork - Surah Fatiha 6 | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:48:18 | |
Our final Heartwork of the year will explore the "ask" in Surah al Fatiha. During our last session, a point was brought up that Surah Fatiha is a template for dua - praise, humility, and then the ask.
What is it that we are asking for? Have we reflected about what guidance means to us? Why is it so important to look at how Allah described guidance as - a straight path? How does this reflection change our reading of the chapter in our daily prayers?

| Heartwork - Surah Fatiha 3 | 12 Feb 2022 | 01:00:05 | |
Heartwork tonight continues our journey through Surah Fatiha - the opening chapter in the Quran.
This introduction to the Book of Allah is something we engage with every time we pray, a re-orientation to the themes that Allah wanted us to engage with. His introduction to the reader is something every person should reflect on constantly, keeping us in the right direction as the challenges we encounter in life - internally and externally - push us off course..

Heartwork: we'll be continuing our group discussion and reflection on Surah Fatiha.
Last session, we covered the power of introduction that Allah gives us of Himself with the basmalah (in the name of Allah, the Compassionate the Merciful).
This week, we'll dive into the next verse, where we begin to navigate the nature of our relationship with Allah through the vehicle of gratitude and praise.

| Heartwork - Purification of The Heart: Heedlessness (Ghaflah) | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:54:38 | |
Heartwork tonight will focus on a disease that is an absence of remembrance, a void in God-consciousness: ghaflah. We all know the disappointment of forgetting something important - imagine how frequently we forget Allah, and how we feel when we come upon that realization.
While we mentally know that our faith is the most important element of our lives, our heart may not always reflect that. The Prophet ﷺ warned us of the danger of falling into spiritual forgetfulness when he said, "The example of the one who remembers their Lord, in comparison to the one who does not remember their Lord, is that of a living person compared to a dead one."
The status of a spiritual heart being filled with life or being void and dead is directly related to how much we remember Allah. Battling this disease, ghaflah, is critical. What are its symptoms? Where does it come from? And how can we treat it?

| Heartwork: Purification of The Heart - Arrogance | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:59:29 | |
Heartwork: when Allah detailed to us the fatal flaw of Shaytan, the Quran says that he arrogantly defied Allah, and in that arrogance he found his downfall.
The Quran further narrates the stories of many people and nations of the past that sabotaged their hearts by means of arrogance, while they were unaware of their spiritual disease. That’s the toughest part, these ailments can sneak up on us and have an effect on us before we know it.
Arrogance is commonly reduced to the feeling or belief that someone thinks they’re better than another - but it’s much more complex than that. It is a disease that is always looming, with symptoms that must be treated right away before the impact is significant. | |||
| Heartwork - Purification of The Heart: Miserliness | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:55:23 | |
Heartwork: this week, the topic of our discussion will be the disease of miserliness, which the Prophet ﷺ asked his companions "Which disease of the heart is worse than miserliness?"While we may think we know what it means to be cheap or stingy, Islam provides a greater context to this concept, with details that can reveal a lot about us, to us.

| Heartwork: Purification of The Heart - Extravagance | 12 Feb 2022 | 01:05:28 | |
Heartwork: tonights session will focus on a disease that is hard to define, as it commonly flows amongst us - extravagance and excess. How does Islam define excess? What are some of the symptoms that we seek too much? What is the standard to follow when deciding how much is “enough?” And how can we moderate our hearts to be balanced in what we seek?

| Heartwork - Purification of the Heart: Ostentation/Showing Off (Riya) | 12 Feb 2022 | 01:06:17 | |
Young Professionals: tonight we'll be discussing our second disease: showing off/ostentation (riyaa' in Arabic). Doing acts that are supposed to be virtuous and for Allah, but doing them for a reason that is not sincerely for Allah.
This disease is one of the most challenging because of its ability to exist within the heart of a person completely undetected. There are moments, though, where the symptoms of this disease become abundantly apparent.
How do we know if we're sincere? How do we fight our nafs in our effort to do things for Allah alone? How do we mitigate the effects of feeling riyaa' creeping up within us when we are doing something that should be for Allah alone?

This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse number 121.
One of the many lessons we learn from the story of Adam, Hawa, and Shaytaan that no matter what mistake a person makes, Allah's forgiveness awaits them so long as they seek it.
In this story, there is a profound "fork in the road" when Shaytaan whispers to Adam and Hawa to approach and eat from the tree: both parties had made mistakes, but while one gets cursed, the other is forgiven. What was the difference? Let's discuss through these verses tonight, at Heartwork.

| Heartwork - Community Quran Study of Surah Taha: Parting the sea or drowning in arrogance | 12 Feb 2022 | 00:50:47 | |
This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 72.
After the showdown between Prophet Musa (as) and the magicians (on behalf of Pharoah), the magicians who had previously devoted their life and work to Pharoah recognized the truth of the message of Islam and submitted. Threatened with execution, they remained firm, ultimately choosing Allah despite what awaited them.
The next passage moves on to address the final moments that Musa (as) and Bani Israel had with Pharoah. Their escape, being pursued by the army, the miracle Allah granted them to save them, and how the very same miracle Allah granted them was the downfall of Pharoah and his army. The moment submission of Musa (as) and his people was the very same moment of destruction for their oppressor.

This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 47.
Allah instructs Musa and Harun (as) to go to Pharoah and present to him the message of rectification, the message of Islam. The fear that they have is manifest, and so Allah guides them to what is the best presentation, with nuances of wisdom and guidance along the way. Then the moment comes, the conversation between Musa and Pharoah is had, demonstrating the characteristics of virtue against the characteristics of corruption.

| Heartwork - Quran Study: Surah Taha 9 | 12 Feb 2022 | 01:08:33 | |
This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 42.
Pharoah is one of the greatest tyrants of all time - he oppressed thousands and thousands under his control, and eventually inflated his ego to the point where he pronounced "I am god the most high!" His transgressions against God and humanity reached such limits, Allah gave Musa and Harun (as) the mission to go and speak to him.
When someone is clearly in the wrong, and they wrong others while they're at it, when we address their mistakes/aggressions, the last thing we think about is to make sure we speak to them with etiquette, care, and compassion. Normally, our goal is to show them they're wrong, and to end the harm that they're doing - our etiquette is an afterthought (if a thought at all).
The way that Allah instructed Musa to speak Pharoah may surprise us.

This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 28.
In this passage, Musa is seeking aid from Allah regarding the task at hand; Allah has told Musa (as) that he is a messenger, and that he must go to Pharoah and convey the message of truth and justice of Islam to him. This is the most overwhelming task that Musa has been given in his life. Despite having gotten by in life until now, and despite being ordained a messenger, Musa exemplifies wisdom and humility in his dua he makes to Allah as he requests help for his task. How does he make dua? How does he show this humility and thoughtfulness? We'll discuss this tonight.

| Heartwork: Quran Study for Young Professionals - Surah Taha 5 | 13 Feb 2021 | 01:09:35 | |
This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 15.
One of the principle beliefs that Muslims hold sacred is the concept of a Hereafter - that every single person’s actions in this worldly life will be measured and weighed in accordance with their responsibilities to God and everyone around them, and through God’s mercy and grace they will either be given Paradise, or by God’s justice some will suffer the consequences of flagrant spiritual negligence. This is a pretty powerful canvas for reflection, as it stands.
One aspect of the Afterlife that is especially powerful, though, is the fact that the knowledge about its exact time and various details about its occurrence are hidden from humanity. What is the importance of veiling the Day of Judgment from humanity? Allah explains in this passage of Surah Taha.
