SFISH: How to feel less parent guilt when working from home (Agony Aunt)21 Feb 202400:07:28

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be.

This week I want to address your woes in another Agony Aunt episode. I asked members of the Misfit Entrepreneurs Facebook group what their biggest challenges were as business parents.

And today I'll answer one from Bec Slack from CleverStuff. Bec's biggest challenge is:

"When they were younger the feeling of guilt for using daycare when people thought working from home meant they should be with me (noone actually said it, but it was the feeling).

Now they are older it's the guilt of being home and them asking to do something but I still have work to do.

Mind you, their face when I can make an assembly to see them get an award or being able to attend book parade makes up for it.

Juggling is tricky no matter what though. It's not just work Vs kids, it's work Vs kids Vs partner Vs mental health Vs social life Vs hobbies Vs sleep."

SFISH: How to be happier with Penny Locaso (Chat)10 Jan 202400:33:29

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

When you're a busy working parent, your own happiness can feel like it's at the bottom of a long list.

This stage of life doesn't feel like it's about being happy.
It feels like it's about survival.

Furthermore, any attempts to seek happiness bring out a rash of parent guilt. Self-care feels selfish when you have small humans.

And in business often what we think makes us happy, doesn't.
We're driven by ego, peer pressure and a bag full of 'shoulds'.
And we find, or I did, that the pursuit of happiness is in fact making us miserable.

So in today's episode, we're going to chat about happiness, what it means and how to find it both as a parent and a business owner.

Tune in to learn:

  • What Penny's family dynamic is like

  • How Penny divides her time between co-parenting and working

  • Penny's relationship with her child and how that's changed as they've gotten older.

  • How to find happiness through micro-moments and contentment

  • How to stop making yourself miserable by comparing yourself to other people

  • Penny's top tips to get started on the process towards a happier life

And today I'll answer one from Donelle Dewar. Donelle's biggest challenge is:

Constantly being pulled in multiple directions - trying to keep all the plates spinning, occasionally giving up and just letting one smash to the ground, then feeling like I'm being judged for it.

SFISH: Setting up strong financial foundations with Justine McLean (Chat)22 Nov 202300:37:38

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

As you'll know from the book, I think understanding our money is one of the biggest factors in winning this whole Parenting and business battle.

Second only to managing your time.

Because even the most highly productive humans can find themselves struggling financially. Put simply, if you're not able to overcome your money mindset issues and your financial illiteracy, you'll find it's amazingly easy to make no money at all.

So in this episode, I want to give you some practical advice on how to understand your finances, get clear on your budget and work out how much money you actually have.

As well as providing some invaluable tips on how to increase your profit and charge more for your products and services.

Sticking to a budget can be hard, especially if you're overestimating how much money you actually have, and if you're undercharging for your products and services.

Our guest today is an expert in money management who knows how to plug money leaks while juggling a family - and don't worry, I'll for sure ask if she's making six figures in school hours.

SFISH: How to talk to clients about being a parent (Agony Aunt)18 Oct 202300:10:34

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

New podcast out today: How to talk to clients about being a parent (Agony Aunt).

So I posted in the Misfit Entrepreneur group and I asked people what their challenges were about being a parent and a business owner.

Today's advice is for Jessica Harder. Her biggest challenge is:

"For me it's judging how much to share with clients. I obviously have to mention to clients that I work in the evenings, so they know I can't always respond during the day. But I had one prospective client turn me down because I mentioned I had kids, and they made it clear they felt I had too much on my plate to be able to dedicate time to their project."

SFISH: Cuddling up to your inner critic with Katrina Alilovic (Chat)30 Aug 202300:38:37

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Let's be honest, we're all frightened of being judged.

But in truth, no one judges you more than you do.

It gets tiring hearing that inner voice constantly nagging that you've done something wrong.
Or that you're going to fail.

And the stories we tell ourselves are so so powerful.
Our thoughts become our feelings, and our feelings our actions.

And all of a sudden we're believing all those negative thoughts and they're stopping us from being our best selves.

It's time we said 'no more'!
So today we'll discuss how to make peace with yourself, silence that negative voice and learn how to tell ourselves better stories.

Tune in to learn:

  • What kind of challenges Katrina has faced over the years as a busy business parent

  • What your 'inner critic' is

  • The purpose your inner critic serves

  • How parenting stress can influence your inner voice

  • The importance of recognising where your thoughts come from, and finding a way forward.

  • Why you should practice self-compassion with your inner voice rather than trying to silence it

SFISH: Shameless outsourcing and healthy boundaries with Anu Sawhney (Chat)05 Jul 202300:47:59

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Being a parent can feel like having a hundred different jobs.

So many chores to do, keeping your small humans alive and don't get me started on the mental load - that birthday party present to buy, dentist appointments to book, and effing book day.

When all that's done, there's precious little brain juice left for your business.

So how do you create more time?

You could outsource - if you have the money.

You could insource - if your kids are capable, and you have the patience of a saint.

You could buy a robovacuum to save a few precious minutes each day.

My guest today is a master at knowing where she can afford to outsource and make some more time to spend with the family.

She's a smart, business human who prides herself on having an ethical ecommerce store, a mum to two children under 10, and a love of things sparkly.

In this episode, we'll delve into some parental stereotypes, discuss the expectations placed on older siblings, the evolution of parenting styles, and just how hard it is to be a business-owning parent.

Tune in to learn:

  • Anu's family set up

  • The differences between raising her first and second child

  • Anu's parenting style, and the importance of spending quality time with her kids

  • How Anu went from working in the fashion industry to starting her own jewellery business

  • When Anu focused in on her financials

  • Anu's biggest challenge balancing parenting and a new business

  • Why Anu started outsourcing the household chores and cooking, and why it works for her

  • Anu's tips to be more productive

  • How Anu fits self-care into her week

SFISH: Why passion is the biggest business killer (Tip)14 Jun 202300:07:08

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Hello, my name is Kate Toon, a business mentor, digital marketing coach, and an okayish parent.

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be, and I wanted to share some tips I've picked up along the way. These are shorter, snappier episodes to give you quick wins in your day.

Today's episode is all about why I hate passion.

People often say they want to start a business because they have an idea they're truly passionate about. When I hear this line, my eyes roll so far back into my head, I can see the goblin who controls my brain.

Because I believe passion is the biggest business killer.

'If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.' Benjamin Franklin

If you're thinking of starting a business because you're passionate about a particular project or industry, stop for a minute and think about it:

  • There's no quicker way to fall out of love with something you adore doing than to try to make money from it.
  • All relationships become boring after a while – and so do businesses.
  • A boring business is often a successful business.
  • Predictability, persistence, consistency and hard work aren't sexy, but they're often the key to long-lasting success.

But you need to ask yourself: 'Can I love my idea for the long term?' Is it a one-night-stand business idea, or can you grow old together (or at least into middle age)?

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Managing the juggle of being a parent and a business owner is hard enough but add ADHD to the mix and it suddenly gets a whole lot harder.

Today's guest is also my partner! #awkward.

But I really wanted to get him on the show because not only is he an amazing dad, who does the lion's share of childcare in his family set-up, he's also a great example of someone who has acknowledged his neurodivergence and worked through the positives and negatives.

He's developed strategies to make him more focused and productive, to complete tasks, be present and overcome his money mindset issues.

It's a great episode for anyone who struggles with the ability to plan and a wonderful example of how to turn your kryptonite into a genuine superpower.

SFISH: Finding your parenting balance with Carrie Kwan (Chat)24 May 202300:36:06

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

I'm a big believer that as a business-owning parent you can have it all, just not at the same time.

We're constantly twiddling the knobs of being a loving parent, managing our business and trying to find a modicum of time for self-care.

My guest today sees it more like an orchestra, sometimes the drums are too loud, often the violin is out of tune, but every now and again we achieve business parenting harmony, and ain't that beautiful.

Today's guest is a huge advocate for women in business, runs a community for mums and shares more statistics about the reality of the parenting business world than you can shake a stick at.

It's a great episode packed with productivity tips, mindset lessons and how you should always have the confidence to tell your story and ask for help.

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be, and I wanted to share some tips I've picked up along the way. These are shorter, snappier episodes to give you quick wins in your day.

Today's episode is all about telling your clients about your kids.

Ridiculously, letting your clients know you've actually produced a human seems like a bad thing. I see so many small-business-owning parents trying to hide their 'parentness' – trying to work 'normal hours', taking calls while their child is literally climbing all over them, or sneaking into the bathroom and covering themselves with a towel to drown out the noise of their kids.

But guess what? Your clients probably have small humans too.

Working from home feels like a dream.
You get to work in your pyjamas, commute down the hall, and eat snacks whenever you want.

No more team meetings.
No more grabbing a limp sushi roll at some wretched food court.
No more pencil skirts.

But working from home has its own challenges.

On today's show, I chat with a dad of three teens about working from home, how he stays productive, his business why, how he deals with parent guilt and so much more.

SFISH: Self-care: Burn out avoidance strategies (Tip)03 May 202300:11:41

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Hello, my name is Kate Toon, a business mentor, digital marketing coach, and an okayish parent.

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be, and I wanted to share some tips I've picked up along the way. These are shorter, snappier episodes to give you quick wins in your day.

Following on from our previous tip about burnout, I want to give you some tips on how to avoid burnout, or recover if you've been through it.

The stages of burnout
Now that I've listed them out, the signs of burnout might seem obvious. But in my experience, it kinda sneaks up on you. For me the phases run something like this:

1. Buoyant phase: I'm full of energy, optimism and enthusiasm.

2. A whiff of stress phase: The buoyancy dwindles, and I start to feel a slight edge of stress. I find it a little harder to focus, I jump from task to task, and I find myself waking up during the night.

3. Full-on stress phase: I feel stressed most of the time, get snappy with my family, burst into tears, and find it hard to work through anything for longer than 20 minutes.

4. Burnout phase: This is when I've reached my limit and I'm obsessing over everything. The self-doubt is high, and I start to get headaches, tummy upsets, and a tight feeling in my chest.

5. Ongoing burnout: I know that if I start feeling this way and don't make change, I could sink into genuine depression, and my family and business life would start to suffer.

Catch the episode to hear how I deal with these stages.

SFISH: Managing your business and family money with John Cachia (Chat)26 Apr 202300:43:36

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Ah money, it's a funny old thing.
We worship at the money altar while knowing we should appreciate the more down-to-earth things in our life.
The giggle of our toddler.
The family dinner.

But the truth is that most of us start our businesses with money as a partial goal.

At first, we hope to match the income from our previous job.
Then perhaps we want to exceed that.
After a while, we're consumed by dreams of six-figure revenues, six-figure gross profits, and six-figure net profits.

But when it all comes down to it, it's not just about the money we earn, but the money we save. It's about managing our expectations and our desires.

In today's episode, I'm chatting with a dad of two, a financial whizzkid and a smart business human who's working hard to maintain balance in his business and family life.
And one who always keeps his office door open.

Tune in to learn:

  • John's parenting style

  • How John manages to work long hours, and have quality family time

  • John's biggest work/family struggles working from home

  • How John manages parental guilt

  • John's tips for time management

  • John's money tips for turning profit into personal wealth

SFISH: Self-care: Recognising the signs of burn out (Tip)20 Apr 202300:07:12

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be, and I wanted to share some tips I've picked up along the way.  These are shorter, snappier episodes to give you quick wins in your day

Today's episode is all about recognising the signs of burn out.

As business-owning parents, we're often so busy running about after everyone else that we find it hard to spot the signs that something isn't quite right.

Furthermore, we often dismiss these signs as 'just part of being a parent'.

We're meant to be permanently exhausted, right?

Drinking a bottle of wine every other night is 'normal'.

And all parents are grumpy and snappy.

Nope.

It's important to spot the signs of burnout early so you can (hopefully) head them off at the pass.

SFISH: Cracking your parenting code with Sam Jockel (Chat)13 Apr 202300:48:08

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

When it comes to parenting, cracking your own code for why you do what you do, can be challenging and a little bit scary.

Today's guest was not only a younger parent but also founded multiple businesses to support parents, including her latest venture, ParentTV.

Also the concept of love bombing, which I think you're going to enjoy.

This is a deep dive into the neural pathways of parenting with some awesome productivity, self-care and money tips thrown in.

Let's get stuck in.

SFISH: Money: Creating recurring income (Tip)05 Apr 202300:08:09

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

As a fellow human trying to balance parenting and running a business, I know how hard it can be, and I wanted to share some tips I've picked up along the way.  These are shorter, snappier episodes to give you quick wins in your day

Today's episode is all about creating recurring income.

Nearly every business owner I speak to says their first goal is to 'replace the income' they had in their old job. And I get this. While we love the freedom and autonomy of working for ourselves, we miss the regular salary.

A steady, regular income allows us to feel safe and secure, creating predictability and leaving us knowing we've got our rent/mortgage payments and the basics covered. Here are a few forms of recurring income that have worked for my clients and for me.

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

We all know the early years of being a business parent are an impossible struggle.

The late nights up with kids, the early mornings trying to build your business.

But what happens when your business is a success, your kids are teenagers and you want to shift gears and enjoy life a little more?

When you've been 'go go go' for a long time and told yourself the story that you're working hard for your kids, how do you know if now is the right time to stop, take stock and start enjoying life a little?

I'm talking to one of Australia's most successful entrepreneurs about the challenges of being a younger dad, working with his partner, powering through productivity and mastering his money.

But we also dig deeper into why many business-owning parents feel they're not good enough, push themselves too hard and fail to prioritise their health and well-being.

This is just a fabulous podcast episode with someone who I personally admire hugely.

I think you're going to love it.

Tune in to learn:

  • Dale's mindset towards business and family

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

Today we're starting right at the beginning by asking the question, what is a good parent anyway? Is there really such a thing?

Because of course, before we have kids we all have pretty strong ideas about how we're going to parent our child.
But then reality and our businesses get in the way.
So how do you maintain a great relationship with your kids while running your business?

We'll dig into the different parenting styles, nature versus nurture,  historical parenting styles, and understanding how little control we have.

We'll also cover how to set boundaries and give your kids the emotional intelligence to handle life's challenges.

It's a deep dive that really helps you examine why you parent how you parent and how to forgive yourself for not having all the answers.

SFISH: Trailer: Six Figures in School Hours16 Mar 202300:02:12

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:

It's called Six Figures in School Hours

And it's all about helping you run a successful business and still be a good parent..

Because in my experience most business owning parents don't want to build a global empire or make a gazillion dollars a year.  I mean it would be nice but it's not their top priority.

They just want to earn a decent income and have time to read their kids a bedtime story without having a meltdown in the process.

Yes, we know running a business can be rewarding. However, it can also seep into every life crack, eat up your energy and leave you exhausted, stressed and snapping at your small humans.

In Six Figures in School Hours, me, Kate Toon award-winning digital marketing coach and business mentor will be sharing practical and doable tips for parents to run a successful business, make serious money and not burn themselves to a frazzle in the process.

We'll be chatting with real life parents about their experiences of managing the juggle, as well as experts in parenting, finance, productivity, mindset, communication and more.

We'll cover off topics such as
what is a good parent?
Ways to involve your family in your business
Strategies to improve money management
And passive income ideas.

I'll show you how to turn that six-figure profit dial up or down depending on the compromises you're willing to make.

As well as that we'll be sharing tools and tactics to manage your money, be more productive and focus on what matters, along with inspiring stories from other successful business parents who know exactly how it feels.

Six Figures in School Hours is a smart, honest business self-help podcast that gives you the skills, the tools and the confidence to never again need to choose between a successful business and a happy family life.

I hope you're going to love it.

Why I've rebranded to The Kate Toon Show22 Jul 202400:03:01

Stepping outside of school hours

Hello, lovely listeners. I want to let you know about a bit of a change. This podcast is now the Kate Toon Show.

Yes, I've finally embraced having my own name in the title of my podcast.

Why? Because I'm a huge, egotistical beast. No, the reality is with so many different brands and books and stories to tell, I needed an overarching name for the show that allowed me to talk about all the various bits and bobs.

So what is the Kate Toon Show?

Well, I'm here to help you build a successful, profitable, and enjoyable business using smart, creative, simple digital marketing and business tactics. Now, whether that's creating passive income streams, juggling your real life with your business life, being a misfit or passing on smart marketing tips, I'm here to help.

In this next series, we'll be talking more about Six Figures While You Sleep, how to create automated digital passive income products, such as courses, memberships, masterminds, and digital downloads. But I also want to be able to talk about all the other things I love.

We can talk about whatever we want, but the whole goal of it is to show you different and interesting ways to build a brand that you love, that you're proud of, and that serves the life that you want to live. It may be slightly unconventional compared to other businessey typey, coachy, mentory people, but it's going to be my way and hopefully we'll have a giggle along the way.

There'll still be guests, there'll still be tips.

The Kate Toon Show is coming. Get your ear holes ready.

SFISH: Keeping burnout at bay with Laetitia Andrac (Chat)17 Jun 202400:40:45

Six Figures In School Hours Episode:
Like most parents who run a business, I often feel utterly overwhelmed. I struggle with competing priorities, and in the past, I've pushed myself way too hard.

I shared my story of near burnout in the book, and I've talked about it on the podcast before. I didn't fully reach burnout but I definitely saw rock bottom.

Sometimes you have to amp up the self-care, adjust your working habits, or change tracks altogether.

Today's guest not only came back from burnout, but now coaches other small business owners on how to recognise the signs and avoid it.

Tune in to learn:

  • How Laetitia dealt with her burnout, and the life changes she made as a result

  • Why she moved away from her managerial position to start building her own business.

  • How to prevent yourself from burning out with micro-moments

  • How Laetitia uses public accountability and the Pomodoro technique to be more productive

  • Why Laetitia is driven by three key values: empowering women, sustainability and giving back to community.

SFISH: Toon Update: Podcast on pause29 Apr 202400:00:43

Six Figures in School Hours Episode:
Hello, I just want to explain that we're going to be taking a little bit of a break on the podcast, probably about a month or so.

This is sadly because I've had some bad news from home and I need to return to the UK and spend some time with my family. So I hope you can bear with me while I get through this difficult time.

We will be back later in the year with more great episodes.

Thanks for listening. I wish you all well. Thank you.
