The Last Human Layer Another rather fascinating episode in the Heads Talk® Power Series, and one that takes the conversation somewhere very human. This episode was recorded in early spring. Its release was delayed by the long digital detox and other events, but it was well worth the wait. I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion with Allison J. Pugh, Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University, 2026 Guggenheim Fellow and author of the award-winning The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World. As we unpack Allison’s thinking on connective labour, the role of humans today, what dignity means in our time, and how we contend with the growing power and influence of algorithms, we begin to question what happens to the human elements that systems cannot easily measure, quantify or replace. Her work asks us to look beyond what systems measure and notice the human effort that makes those systems work. At the heart of our conversation is Allison's concept of connective labour: the often invisible work of building trust, understanding, empathy and connection. We explore why this labour remains so undervalued, and what happens when the systems we design begin extracting those human qualities while simultaneously automating the very interactions that give them meaning. Then we get into the less visible power: algorithms, feeds, AI and systems that are always on. Who is shaping whom? What happens when people increasingly feel processed rather than seen? And, perhaps most provocatively, could meaningful human connection itself become a luxury, available to those who can afford it? We also ask what happens to dignity, identity and purpose if AI removes more of the work through which people currently derive meaning. Universal basic income may answer an economic question. But does it answer the human one? As Allison puts it rather bluntly: switch off. At least for a period every week. What better advice is there for the situation we find ourselves in today? A conversation about technology, power and progress, yes. But ultimately, it is about us. What we value. What we preserve. And what we risk losing while marvelling at what machines can do. A fascinating conversation, and one I would happily have again. I’m not quite sure how we got here, but here we are. And what better way to mark the milestone than with a conversation that became, quite unexpectedly, a little battle of wills. Festus Akinbusoye is the former Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, and currently a Westminster councillor. He is also an entrepreneur and former professional basketball player. Most recently he is seeking selection as the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London in 2028. Festus made history as Britain’s first Black Police and Crime Commissioner. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation because Festus and I landed on opposite sides of one deceptively simple question: how much agency do we really have? I argued that circumstances, systems and reality impose limits on what any one person can achieve. That’s me injecting some realism into Festus’s sanguine attitude and outlook. Festus, however, in his characteristically determined fashion, argued that with the right mindset, ambition and refusal to be defined by circumstance, far more is possible. Admirable, but I remain sceptical, while always being open to persuasion. We pushed, challenged, agreed, sometimes disagreed, but always cordially. And I think that is especially important today. Along the way, we get into power from both sides of the room, policing and stop and search, the British Dream, the complexity of race and crime, social frustration, technology and the possibility of disorder spreading faster than institutions can respond. Festus also reflects on what power taught him, why he believes “I am my own power”, and why any man-made problem has a man-made solution. A needed and lively conversation for Episode 300. And yes, we did get into a little battle about agency versus reality. Where do we REALLY fit in today?🇨🇭 Grief Before Reinvention. Strategic Chokepoints. The Power of Being Indispensable. Episode 299 of Heads Talk® and we are nearly at 300!! There is still something slightly surreal about that number. We started the Autumn season with a bang, so let's keep going... Howard Yu is one of those guests whose words you hang on because you know there is a gem coming around the corner. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and am delighted that, after all this time, our diaries finally crossed, intertwined and we actually made it to an episode, an approaching 2-hour episode. I’ve wanted to have this conversation with Howard for some time, particularly around middle powers, where they are heading and how they retain relevance in a changing power architecture. Howard Yu is LEGO® Professor of Management and Innovation at IMD Business School, leads its Center for Future Readiness, and is a Thinkers50 Strategy Award winner. His work sits squarely at the intersection of innovation, strategy and the uncomfortable question of what makes organisations, and now nations, capable of surviving what comes next. At the heart of this conversation is the identity, and perhaps the identity crisis, of today's middle powers. Howard takes the thinking he has applied to more than 400 companies and turns the lens on nations: a country can remain wealthy and successful on paper while quietly becoming strategically poorer. He challenges the West's fascination with the "next frontier" while allowing parts of the industrial body, supply chains and manufacturing capability to atrophy, and asks what happens when technological sophistication sits on infrastructure someone else controls. His answer is not simply to become bigger. It is to become indispensable. There is a fascinating discussion on the grief of power, the psychology of decline, technological dependency and Howard's "Intel Inside" proposition for middle powers: don't necessarily own the whole system, become a part of it that the system cannot easily do without. And perhaps that is the real future-readiness test. Not how powerful you once were, but whether you can still matter when the architecture around you changes. Howard, as expected, delivers insight after insight. I urge you to listen. And if, like me, you can never get enough of Howard, his Substack, One Inch Ahead, is another rabbit hole worth falling into. See links below. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇨🇭Power🇨🇭 The return of the Heads Talk® Power Series begins with a bang and a fitting question: When power changes hands, what changes with it? After a long summer detox break I'm absolutely honoured to have Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder of the World Economic Forum, kickstart Part 2 of the series. We go back to the thinking that shaped Davos and forward into a different power landscape. I wanted to go back to the beginning. Back to 1971, when Professor Schwab questioned whether a company could really exist simply for its shareholders. His answer was no. He developed what became known as the stakeholder concept, arguing that business sits within a much wider social system, with responsibilities to employees, government, communities and society. More than five decades later, that thinking feels anything but dated. In our current economy shaped by technology, AI and systems operating across borders, who carries responsibility and accountability has become even more pressing. The question now is whether stakeholder capitalism needs to evolve again because the systems themselves have become centres of power. That takes us directly into Prof. Schwab’s latest book, The Competitive Enterprise in the Intelligent Age, and his argument that we are moving beyond another technological revolution into a new age altogether. We also explore the fascinating evolution of soft power. Professor Schwab reflects on his work with Professor Joseph Nye and how influence has become more complex, technological and, at times, more coercive. Yet the conversation ends somewhere unexpectedly hopeful: constructive optimism. Not passive hope, but the belief that the future is something we actively construct. We are back! I couldn't think of a better way to restart the power series on Heads Talk, than with today's guest. #HTPowerSeries Topics Covered: ⛔️Listen to this episode's Heads Talk - The Analysis by TBA HERE! ◽️Episode Sponsored by Accxia - 𝔼𝕦𝕣𝕠𝕡𝕖'𝕤 𝕃𝕒𝕣𝕘𝕖𝕤𝕥 ℙ𝕣𝕚𝕧𝕒𝕥𝕖 ℂ𝕝𝕠𝕦𝕕 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝔸𝕥𝕝𝕒𝕤𝕤𝕚𝕒𝕟 Below you will find the links to the Intelligent Age series. | 297 - Dame Susan Langley DBE: Power Series, City of London Corporation - Unsquaring the Square Mile: The Chain and the Change | 20 Jul 2026 | 00:49:21 | |
Let us know your thoughts. Send us a Text Message. Episode Title: 🇬🇧Unsquaring the Square Mile: The Chain and the Change🇬🇧 Great institutions are not defined by whether they change. They are defined by how they change. The ceremonial chain represents continuity. Change ensures continuity remains relevant. Sometimes, transformation arrives not through revolution, but through quiet evolution. A single word changes. Lord Mayor becomes Lady Mayor. Tradition remains intact, yet expectations subtly shift. One of Britain's oldest institutions continues to honour its past while recognising that relevance depends on its ability to evolve. In this episode of the Heads Talk® Power Series, I'm joined by Dame Susan Langley DBE, the 697th Lord Mayor of the City of London, only the third woman to hold the office in almost 700 years and the first to be formally styled Lady Mayor. Together, we move well beyond financial markets. We explore trust, institutions and the changing social contract; why misinformation has become an economic threat; whether capitalism is being quietly redefined; why resilience alone cannot repair broken systems; and why emotional intelligence may become one of the most valuable currencies in the next decade...or sooner. From the future of the City of London to AI, burnout, social mobility and Britain's place in a changing global economy, this conversation asks an important question: How do institutions evolve without losing the very qualities that made them worth preserving? Perhaps the answer begins with an even bigger question: Can institutions remain relevant without first reimagining the people they were built to serve? It's Not About AI. Episode 1: Reshuffle explained what happens. Episode 2: The Roadmap asks how do we measure it as it unfolds. Another fantastic episode in the Power Series on Heads Talk®. Returning to the show is renowned thinker, scholar, bestselling author and Thinkers50 award recipient Sangeet Paul Choudary. Our first conversation explored Reshuffle. This current episode begins where the book deliberately leaves off. Writing Reshuffle answered an important question. It also exposed a much bigger one: How do we actually observe, measure and test economic disruption as it unfolds? That question has evolved into Sangeet's Reshuffle Roadmap and the emerging Reshuffle Index; a living framework designed not simply to explain disruption, but to observe, measure and continually test it as economies evolve. Before recording, I spent time looking at the roadmap because I wanted to understand it in order to perhaps challenge it. During that process, it became clear to me what Sangeet is doing. This isn't a conversation about AI. Nor is it about agentic AI or even the emerging agentic economy. AI is not the protagonist here. It is simply today's disruptive variable. The real conversation is about understanding how economies reorganise themselves, observing and measuring that reorganisation as it unfolds, and why leaders need a better way of seeing those changes before everyone else does. One of the most thought-provoking parts of our discussion looked at something easily overlooked: value and power obey different rules. Value may be created, redistributed, destroyed or reach a dead end. Power, however, concerns who ultimately coordinates, controls and captures that value. Understanding the distinction is central to understanding the roadmap itself. Digesting the roadmap, I found myself relying on metaphors from mathematics and the natural sciences to make sense of its underlying logic. It was pleasing to discover that many of those same analogies naturally resurfaced during our conversation before focusing back to economics. This certainly isn't another regular AI conversation. It's a conversation about one of the most original frameworks currently being developed for understanding economic transformation, and changing the way we think about disruption itself. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇦🇺Corporate Statecraft: Enter the Chief Geopolitical Officer🇫🇷 Today's thought experiment. Tomorrow's board appointment? The Power Series on Heads Talk® just keeps on giving! This conversation left me wondering whether we are witnessing the emergence of the newest seat in the executive C-Suite: the Chief Geopolitical Officer. It also begs a fascinating question: Will every multinational soon need one? Twenty years ago, the idea would have sounded fanciful. Today, perhaps inevitable. As geopolitical complexity increasingly shapes markets, supply chains, regulation, investment & corporate reputation, will tomorrow's multinational require an executive whose primary role is not to run the business, but to navigate the world around it? If that sounds like a bold proposition, it may be closer than we think. We may already be entering the era of Corporate Statecraft, where diplomacy becomes a core business capability rather than an external concern, freeing CEOs to focus on leading the enterprise while a new generation of executives manages the intersection of business, governments and global strategy. Few people are better placed to explore that question than my guest today, Damien Bruckard. Founder of Geopolitical Strategy and former Head of Global Engagement at the International Chamber of Commerce, Damien has spent his career advising governments, multilateral institutions and business leaders on international trade, diplomacy and geopolitical risk. He has worn many hats: diplomat, international lawyer, trade negotiator and strategic adviser. If that wasn't enough, he also speaks multiple languages, including Russian. Having worked across the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the United Nations, and now firmly in the corporate and commercial world, Damien brings a rare blend of diplomatic insight and commercial pragmatism. Together, we explore why leaders often recognise geopolitical risk yet remain unprepared for it, whether corporations are quietly becoming geopolitical actors in their own right, and why understanding today's world still requires something that neither AI nor data can fully replace: human judgement, cultural immersion, curiosity and being there. Before you listen, suspend EVERYTHING you think you know about China for the next 30 minutes. Not because you're wrong. But because you may have been looking through a different lens. This conversation genuinely changed the way I think about China. Not because Kenny Lim, Founder of China Decoded, asked me to agree with him, but because he gave me something far more valuable: a framework. A way of seeing China through its own historical memory, cultural logic, strategic priorities and civilisational identity, rather than through the assumptions we in the West so often project onto it. Known as The China Whisperer, Kenny doesn't ask us to like China or fear China. Rather, he tells and shows for us to understand it. We explore why sovereignty means something profoundly different to Beijing, why industrial capability is viewed as national security, why the Century of Humiliation is not simply history but living memory, and why China often responds to the world in ways that appear puzzling until you understand the thinking behind them. Whether you ultimately agree with Kenny or not is almost beside the point. What this conversation offers is something increasingly rare: the opportunity to see one of the world's most consequential nations from the inside looking out, rather than the outside looking in. For me, it was less an interview and more the discovery of a code I hadn't previously possessed. Once you see it, many of China's decisions begin to make considerably more sense. It's not really about China; it's about civilisational thinking, strategic patience, and what power actually is. Kenny's central argument is that the West keeps analysing China through a Western lens, and in doing so repeatedly misreads its intentions. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇮🇹Quantum Sapiens🇩🇪 The Consciousness Threshold This is a special episode of Heads Talk®: Nexus Rerum: Boardrooms & Statecraft and a rather unusual instalment in the Power Series. Paolo Sironi returns to Heads Talk® as one of the most respected voices in banking, financial markets, risk, and artificial intelligence. My original intention was indeed to bring Paolo back to discuss those familiar territories. However, during our exchanges ahead of recording, he shared details of an altogether different project: Quantum Sapiens. The more we spoke, the more it became apparent that this conversation belonged squarely within the Power Series. After all, the Power Series is not simply about politics, institutions, markets, or technology. It examines where power resides, how it moves, who exercises it, and what happens when the underlying architecture of society changes. Quantum Sapiens explores precisely those questions through a different lens: consciousness itself. In many respects, this episode sits at the nexus rerum of philosophy, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, systems thinking, human agency, and the future design of civilisation. This is not a conversation about AI in the conventional sense. Nor is it a conversation about technology alone. It is a journey through consciousness, mortality, identity, meaning, and the uncomfortable possibility that humanity may not understand itself nearly as well as it thinks. Through the characters of Quantum Sapiens, Paolo invites us into a world where consciousness itself becomes the central question. Not whether machines can become human, but whether humanity has fundamentally misunderstood the nature of consciousness all along. What fascinated me most was that the book appears to use AI not as the destination, but as the mirror. A mirror forcing us to confront some of the oldest unresolved questions in philosophy. Why are we so desperate for machines to become conscious? What if immortality became technically possible? Would consciousness survive replication? Would meaning survive immortality? And perhaps most importantly, have our institutions, technologies, and incentives already begun redesigning human beings in their own image? Throughout our discussion, Paolo revealed the remarkable intellectual journey behind the book. A journey spanning more than two decades of research, five years of writing, countless revisions, and a willingness to step far outside the comfort zone of banking, finance, and business literature into something far more personal and vulnerable. What emerged was not simply a discussion about a novel. It became an exploration of uncertainty, wisdom, human agency, and the limits of knowledge itself. If the Power Series asks where power resides, then this episode raises an even deeper possibility: What if the next great transfer of power is not political, economic, or technological? What if it is ontological? An extraordinary conversation with a returning guest who continues to challenge assumptions and provoke thought in equal measure. Enjoy the journey. It's mind boggling... Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇬🇧Power, CTRL and Representation🇬🇧 Another compelling episode in the Power Series on Heads Talk®. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with my guest today. Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE is perhaps best known as the renowned child prodigy and familiar face from the UK's Channel 4 Countdown, but there is so much more beneath the surface. Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE is a computer scientist, social entrepreneur, author, chancellor and one of the UK's most recognisable voices in innovation and digital transformation. Alongside an early career spanning Goldman Sachs, Hewlett-Packard, and Deutsche Bank, she co-founded the award-winning Stemettes, has served as President of the British Science Association and Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University, and continues to shape national conversations on technology, education, and the future of work. What fascinated me most was our exploration of the relationship between science and creativity. Too often they are treated as separate worlds, yet coding itself can be an art form, mathematics can be deeply creative, and innovation rarely emerges without imagination. We discussed the growing importance of STEAM over STEM, where critical thinking, collaboration and artistic expression become just as essential as technical capability in solving tomorrow's problems. We also challenged the labels society is so quick to place on young people. What does it really mean to be a "genius" or a "child prodigy"? Is it a gift, a burden, or both? Through Stemettes, Anne-Marie's philosophy is refreshingly different: create environments where curiosity can flourish, allow children to explore freely, and stop defining them by narrow expectations before they've even had the chance to discover themselves. Along the way, we venture into technological literacy, meritocracy, the future of human relevance in an AI-driven world, and ultimately ask not just what kind of systems we are building, but what kind of humans we want them to serve. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with my guest today because it challenged assumptions rather than reinforced them. Professor Marcel Salathé is one of the world's leading computational epidemiologists and digital health experts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his pioneering work on decentralised digital contact tracing helped shape Switzerland's response and influenced privacy-preserving technologies adopted internationally. Today, his work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, public health, data science, and society. But this conversation isn't really about a pandemic. It's about something much bigger. Somewhere along the way, we traded privacy for public health. We traded convenience for data collection. We trust governments, but should we? We trust technology, but why? We trust algorithms without always understanding them, and we trust institutions until they lose legitimacy. Did we really consent? Was that consent informed? Or have we simply become comfortable with systems we rarely stop to question? Marcel's perspective is both balanced and refreshingly nuanced. He argues that governments should never be trusted automatically and that healthy scepticism is a civic responsibility. At the same time, he draws an important distinction between states and technology companies, observing that governments possess coercive powers private organisations simply do not. It made for a fascinating debate on surveillance, accountability, and where power truly resides in an increasingly digital world. We also explore how information spreads like disease, why digital literacy may become one of the defining competencies of the twenty-first century, and whether algorithms are quietly becoming architects of modern society. A thought-provoking conversation that asks not whether technology is good or bad, but whether we are paying enough attention to the invisible systems already shaping our lives. But what happens when humanity begins serving technology instead? My guest today on Heads Talk® for the #HTPowerSeries, Sara Magdalena Goldberger, operates at the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data governance, and digital regulation. Having advised organisations, policymakers, and international institutions on the opportunities and systemic risks of emerging technologies, Sara brings a refreshingly pragmatic perspective to one of the defining questions of our age: are we still in control? This is a conversation that goes well beyond AI. We explore surveillance, accountability, digital sovereignty, quantum computing, and the quiet transfer of influence from governments to those who control data and algorithms. Along the way, we challenge whether regulation is chasing the wrong problems entirely and ask what meaningful human oversight should actually look like in an increasingly autonomous world. For me, this was one of those discussions that starts with technology but quickly becomes about society itself. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇬🇧Power of The Conscious Capitalist🇬🇧 Modern economies speak constantly about opportunity, inclusion, entrepreneurship, and growth. But beneath the language sits a more uncomfortable question: who actually gets access to capital, networks, and economic mobility, and who quietly gets filtered out? My guest today on Heads Talk® is Joel Blake OBE, Founder and CEO of GFA Exchange, entrepreneur, advisor, and one of the most thoughtful voices examining how financial systems really work beneath the surface. With more than two decades spanning economic policy, fintech, institutional finance, and entrepreneurship, Joel sits at the intersection of capital, technology, governance, and opportunity. This conversation explores financial literacy as a form of power, the realities behind SME funding gaps, invisible gatekeeping inside financial systems, and whether modern finance genuinely expands opportunity or largely protects those already inside the system. What surprised me during this episode was how naturally the discussion moved beyond business and finance into something more philosophical, at times even emotional. Joel’s candour felt timely and fitting for this series. Heads Talk® is known for direct business conversations that cut straight to the chase, but increasingly the chase itself is changing. Business, geopolitics, technology, and statecraft are now colliding in ways that are impossible to ignore. The lines between the boardroom and the cabinet room are blurring, and with that comes the need to talk honestly about human impact, hidden systems of influence, and the realities shaping people’s lives beneath the surface of policy and profit. A thoughtful and revealing conversation about finance, influence, risk, power, and the systems quietly shaping modern economic life. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇬🇧The New Power Equation: Who Thinks, Who Learns, Who Leads🇩🇪 Another wonderful episode of Heads Talk® today for the #HTPowerSeries. At the end of this discussion, I said to my guest that this was one of my favourite episodes of the show, and I sincerely hope we have another conversation together in the future. I genuinely implore you to have a listen. Vice Dean Marcel Lukas of St Andrews University delivered for this series in so many ways. We managed to discuss Kahneman and Tversky’s Prospect Theory, which absolutely delighted me, as the last time I had discussed it in any depth was during my Masters/MSc in Statistics. It was genuinely refreshing to speak with someone who discussed their work with the same enthusiasm and appreciation that I have always held for it. This episode was filled with knowledge bombs and real coal-face insight into higher education, the system, AI, and the challenges institutions are navigating today. We explored the education race and who is really winning it. Due to Marcel’s commercial background prior to academia, we also ventured into the power game, financial markets, incentives, and the realities shaping decision-making today. Fascinating, thought-provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Now, let’s talk about Marcel himself: He is Vice Dean of Executive Education and Senior Lecturer in Banking and Finance at the University of St Andrews. His work explores financial behaviour in a digital world, focusing on how individuals and families engage with money, fintech, and decision-making in increasingly complex systems. Alongside his academic research, which informs policy and regulatory thinking, Marcel advises senior leaders on emerging technologies and the future of financial systems, drawing on a unique career that spans both academia and major global industry transformation programmes. It was one of those rare conversations that stayed with me long after the recording ended. Thoughtful, confronting, deeply human, and at times uncomfortable in the best possible way. My guest is Prof. John Amaechi OBE, New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author, organisational psychologist, former elite athlete, and one of the most respected voices on human behaviour, leadership, and power inside complex systems. We discuss power not in theory, but as it is actually lived, protected, distorted, and inherited across generations. We examine the psychological effects of AI, inequality, institutional fragility, and concentrated wealth, while asking difficult but necessary questions about generational responsibility and whether younger generations are inheriting systems no longer designed for their benefit. John brings clarity, honesty, and humanity to a conversation that became so engaging we completely lost track of time. Many of the insights and reflections in this episode have already become iconic Heads Talk soundbites, and you will certainly hear more from John in the weeks ahead. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn Episode Title: 🇦🇺Illusion Statecraft: Inside Power, Hidden Architecture & Strategic Deception🇦🇺 In this episode of Heads Talk, a continuation of the #HTPowerSeries, we have Michael Feller, former Australian diplomat turned geopolitical strategist, with experience across government, diplomacy, and financial markets. Michael served in Australia’s foreign service, including diplomatic postings in Singapore, led Australia’s bilateral relationship with India, and advised the Prime Minister on Asia from within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Having operated inside the system at the highest levels, he brings a rare, inside-out perspective: not how power is described, but how it is actually exercised. This is not a conventional geopolitical discussion. We interrogate the growing gap between narrative and reality:- what you might call illusion statecraft. The idea that the global order still functions through rules, alliances, and cooperation is increasingly at odds with what’s playing out beneath the surface. From economic warfare and financial fragmentation to the quiet shift of power into systems - payments, energy, data, this episode strips back the theatre of diplomacy and asks a more uncomfortable question: Who actually holds power and who is simply performing it? This is a conversation designed to challenge, to corner, and at times, to expose. Because in today’s world, understanding geopolitics is no longer about what is said, but what is deliberately left unsaid. A sharp, grounded discussion where diplomacy meets reality, and where power is analysed not as it’s described, but as it’s actually deployed. I had an insightful & wide-ranging conversation with my guest on one of the most talked-about yet often misunderstood elements of modern organisations: Culture. Not just what it is, but how it forms, how it shifts, and whether it can ever truly be engineered or “bottled” in a meaningful way. Geoffrey Williams is a cultural strategist and leadership advisor with over 25 years of global experience across business, fashion, media, and social impact. Having held senior roles at organisations including Burberry, Dr. Martens, and Thomson Reuters, he has worked closely with C-suite leaders to navigate reputation, talent, and organisational alignment, helping them rethink culture as a driver of performance, resilience, and long-term value. In this conversation, we step back from the noise and look at the fundamentals: how culture shapes decision-making, why organisations struggle to align strategy with reality, and what it takes to build environments where people and performance can genuinely thrive. A thoughtful, grounded discussion with practical insight and just enough challenge to reframe how you see the organisations you lead or work within. This special end-of-year episode of Heads Talk® I am joined by three gentlemen I’ve known for decades, former colleagues, industry peers, and each a respected voice in the evolution of consulting. In the spirit of the season, you might even say I’ve gathered three wise men to help us navigate where professional services go next in the age of AI. Craig Walker, Chris Gant, Eddie Short: Between them, they’ve led major global transformations, shaped technology strategy in the Big 4 (KPMG, EY, Deloitte), and held C-suite, board and leadership roles across organisations such as Shell, O2, Capgemini, Salesforce, and more. Now, they’ve come together to build a new kind of consulting firm: lean, senior-led, and AI-era ready:- Veles Consulting. This conversation isn’t about automation or incremental efficiency. It’s about reinvention - the new economics of advice, the erosion and rebuilding of trust, and whether agile boutiques are truly challenging the Big Firm model… or simply rewriting the rules with smarter tools. As one of my final episodes of 2025, with Christmas around the corner, it felt only fitting to close the year in conversation with three people I’ve known, respected, and collaborated with for years. It’s a sharp, lively, insider discussion about what consulting was, what it is, and what it must become in the age of agentic AI. Stay tuned. This one lands with impact!! Consider it killing two birds with one stone, bringing together insights from global geopolitics and the forefront of fintech innovation. I had the privilege of hosting this installment as my personal contribution to the Money 2020 Riyadh series, capturing perspectives from a pivotal moment on the global stage, with Brazil very much on the map today where we unpack the 'Pix Paradox'. A truly fascinating discussion. We looked at the quiet revolution of Pix, Brazil’s digital payments innovation, which is transforming the country’s spending culture while sending ripples across the globe. What began as small, everyday transactions has grown into a force reshaping money and commerce, connecting local merchants to international markets, and redefining financial inclusion across LATAM and beyond. From Pix Roaming to recurring payments, we trace how Brazil’s ingenuity is influencing global payment infrastructures, showing that digital finance is not just a tool for transactions, it's so much more than money. They are instruments, if you like, of connection, opportunity, and soft power. Though my guest would argue that it's less about politics and more about business. Listen for that bit of the conversation/argument! I was completely captivated by the story of Brazil’s digital payments revolution and taken aback but the insights delivered by today's guest. Ralf Germer, the CEO of PagBrasil, Brazil’s leading payments technology company, joins me in this fascinating series. With a career spanning international business development, product marketing, and entrepreneurship, Ralf has been at the forefront of reshaping Brazil’s payments landscape. Reshuffle. The episode echoes earlier chats with previous guests, where philosophical “hideouts” were intentional, not accidental. Here, we cover beyond the technical into societal, geopolitical and the human. Many would argue the real impact of AI on business and life, reflecting themes from my guest’s new book. Sangeet Paul Choudary, author of Reshuffle: Who Wins When AI Restacks the Knowledge Economy, shapes thinking globally, from advising governments to influencing policy at the World Economic Forum, the G20, and across Europe and Asia. Scholar meets strategist, he unpacks some of today’s most pressing and profound shifts in this space. We discuss how AI isn’t just changing business models, it’s reshaping the foundations of economies and societies. Expect a conversation where research, policy, and practice converge, offering fresh perspectives on risks, opportunities, and human meaning in a reshuffled world. I had early access to Reshuffle, which allowed me to craft the flow of this conversation. Thanks to Tripta Dutta for making it happen, and to Paolo Sironi for the introduction. With over two decades of leadership, she has championed women’s economic empowerment across Africa and the BRICS nations, spearheading a $2.7 billion initiative in 2023 that created over 120,000 jobs for South African women entrepreneurs. We explored Africa’s evolving role in the BRICS+ framework, highlighting the shift of African women from beneficiaries of inclusion to architects of continental and cross-border trade. Discussions examined deepening economic ties with Russian and Indian partners, particularly in energy and manufacturing, and how South Africa’s expanding commercial footprint in India is reshaping trade flows in exports, transport, and logistics. We also assessed how US tariff shifts have driven BRICS+ nations to strengthen intra-bloc trade, build trust, and reduce reliance on the West. Let us know your thoughts. Send us a Text Message. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedIn We rarely pause to see those caught in between the acceleration of AI and the shifting of Geopolitical lines - the living bridges silently carrying the weight of nations. Sometimes, a conversation about technology stops being about machines and progress and instead reveals the quiet, very real toll on a human holding 2 worlds together. This is one of those conversations. What began as a standard episode recording that quite quickly became something far more profound. My guest didn’t just speak about digital transformation, the strategic dance of cross-border innovation, and geopolitical manoeuvring, he actually embodied it! The dialogue shifted from mechanics and marvels of tech to something deeply human. I found myself listening not to expertise alone, but to a person who has become a living bridge between nations. Through this exchange, I witnessed the toll such a role can take, the weight of carrying two flags in an age dominated by AI and relentless digital progress. It made me wonder: how many other unseen bridges walk among us, silently holding worlds together while bearing the unspoken cost of connection? We often say, “this is a must-listen,” but this episode truly earns it. Beyond what you’ll hear on the mic, there were moments of candour, vulnerability, and rare insight. For that, I’m grateful to my guest, whose honesty turns this discussion into something far more resonant than a technical exploration. ___ John Lin is a rare, compelling figure. Someone who walks the fault line between East and West, carrying with him a dual cultural identity (Chinese and Dutch) that few can navigate so seamlessly; building bridges along the way. But that balancing act is never straightforward. In boardrooms and negotiations, the question looms: Which self do I lead with? Which identity wins the deal? It all started as a clinical exploration of bridging East and West in commerce and innovation, then it quickly changed. What emerged wasn’t just the mechanics of deal-making across hemispheres, but the PERSON who is the bridge. And in that space, the questioning stopped being tactical; it was human. As mentioned, this is not your standard Heads Talk episode. But in the BRICS & Geopolitics Series, we have to talk about blurred lines and border crossings, not only for trade and diplomacy but for people and minds. Humans moving across cultures are like osmosis and diffusion in motion, reshaping the space they enter and carrying traces of each place they’ve been. I relate deeply to John’s journey. I too have felt the weight of expectation, the silent request to perform for approval. But with age, time, stubbornness and a sharper instinct for self-preservation, I’ve learnt to resist. For every John out there: walk into those less-than-welcoming spaces and deliver your genius - nothing else. That’s the bridge. That’s enough. If you missed Part 1, you can find the link here. Definitely worth a listen first. This episode is officially the longest recorded on Heads Talk, and perhaps one of the most reflective. We unintentionally veered away from the core mechanics of finance and found ourselves exploring its philosophical layers. Paolo described money as “emotion” , and of course, I got him to explain what he meant by that. He spoke about money as a vessel of memory, trust, and time, not just a tool or transaction. It was a poignant moment. Paolo invites us to consider not just how money moves, but why it moves us. He describes money as a language of human intent, shaped by our fears, our choices, and our need to make meaning in uncertain systems. At the moment we are driven by speed, algorithms, and data, this episode asks a slower, deeper question: What does money really mean to us individually, collectively, emotionally? A profound listen. Topics Covered ◽️ Money is more than a medium of exchange. It's a human construct built on shared emotion, narrative, and temporal relationships ◽️Philosophy of financial systems: Exploring finance as a social technology, not just an economic one. How design, trust and belief shape our collective financial reality ◽️ Value creation in embedded and creator-led finance across the creator economy and digital ecosystems ◽️ Explainable banking as a strategic advantage.
