Annie Mahtani, electroacoustic composer, sound artist, performer and Lecturer in Music at The University of Birmingham, reveals all about BEAST, the concert sound system of the University of Birmingham’s Electroacoustic Music Studios. Also co-director of BEAST, Mahtani explains how BEAST has become one of the leading systems for the presentation of electronic music in the world thanks to its setups of 100 loudspeakers. She reveals how Genelec monitors play a crucial role, and how the system goes far beyond the capabilities of cinema surround sound systems.

Andrei Irimia is a Romanian pianist and composer on a mission to bring his cutting-edge contemporary sounds from Bucharest to the wider world. His third album is on the way, as well as a European tour – Light and Shadows – coming in September with stops in Berlin, Barcelona, and Paris. He chats to Headliner about the resistance he had to overcome with people on the more traditional side of the Romanian classical music scene, and his new singles, including the sprawling epic track, Obsidian.

We catch up with multiple Grammy Award winning producer and mix engineer Tom Lord-Alge, who reflects on his career so far, which includes mixing records for U2, The Rolling Stones, P!nk, Peter Gabriel, Dave Matthews Band, Blink-182, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Manic Street Preachers, and Marilyn Manson.

We chat about her experiences playing with the likes of P Diddy, Roxy Music and Robin Gibb, her collaborations with the European Space Agency, and why she really is one of the most unclassifiable musicians in the game.

After the enormous success of One Day / Reckoning Song back in 2012, German DJ and producer Wankelmut decided to keep his newly successful career in pop-house music in his native Berli, the world capital of techno: “When I started going out and discovering all these genres, I was into techno for a brief amount of time,” Wankelmut, the alias of Jacob Dilßner, says. “It doesn’t have enough diversity for my taste. I like vocals, I like melodies, some grooves. So I stuck with house music. But Berlin is definitely the techno city! We have Berghain, About Blank, all these famous clubs that play banging techno. But for me, it’s all about grooves and melodies.”

We chat to Grammy-winning remixer and producer Dave Aude about his latest project working with long time friend and collaborator LeAnn Rimes. Aude has remixed LeAnn's Coyote Ugly soundtrack into a beat-laden mashup with a twist as the movie turns 20 - and unlike many remixers, has chosen not to chop up the vocal: "let the artist and the song do the talking, and I'll add a little gasoline where required..!" 

Mat Playford reflects on his seven-year residency at Space in Ibiza, and the future of the club and DJ scene. Having been introduced to Genelec in the ‘90s, Mat has never looked back, and reveals what makes them his choice of studio monitor every time, and why he intends to build another Genelec studio in his greenhouse.
