Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Peter K. Ackerman, Author, Son of Classic TV Producer Harry Ackerman and Actress Elinor Donahue About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Peter K. Ackerman, is descended from Hollywood royalty. He grew up in the 1960s, as close as anyone can, to the world of classic television, at the height of his parents’ careers. His father was the legendary television producer Harry Ackerman, who brought us many classic TV shows including “I Love Lucy”, “Hazel”, “Dennis the Menace”, “The Donna Reed Show”, “Leave it to Beaver”, “Bewitched”, “The Flying Nun, “Gidget”, and many more shows. And his mother is the popular and beloved Emmy-nominated actress Elinor Donahue, who starred in many classic TV shows. She played “Betty Anderson”, the eldest child on “Father Knows Best”, she was “Ellie Walker” the pharmacist on “The Andy Griffith Show”, she played Felix Unger’s girlfriend “Miriam Welby” in “The Odd Couple”, she was “Kate Honeycutt” in “Days of our Lives”, she played “Gladys Peterson” in “Get a Life”, and every fan of “Star Trek: The Original Series” knows her as “Nancy Hedford” from the season 2 episode entitled “Metamorphosis”. She also guest starred in many other popular TV shows including “Newhart”, “Happy Days”, “Friends” and “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”. And who can ever forget her as “Bridget”, the nice saleslady in the department store who helps Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”? Our guest has had a fascinating career, first following in his parents’ footsteps, as an actor, then in production for TV commercials, music videos featuring iconic stars like Madonna, Aerosmith, Janet Jackson and Peter Frampton, and then in television production, working on classic shows like “Full House” and “Friends”, before leaving show business and finding his true calling in the church, and becoming an Episcopal priest in 2007. | Harvey Brownstone Interviews the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer | 05 Oct 2023 | 00:42:30
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, is the son of one of the most talented, respected, revered and beloved cinematic legends and humanitarians: Audrey Hepburn. In classic films like “Roman Holiday”, “Sabrina”, “War and Peace”, “Funny Face”, “Love in the Afternoon”, “The Nun’s Story”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, “The Children’s Hour”, “My Fair Lady”, “Wait Until Dark” and many more, Audrey Hepburn dazzled, inspired and enchanted us. And she captivated our hearts with her iconic beauty, vulnerability, sincerity and incomparable empathy, which underscored and motivated everything she did. She received 5 Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Roman Holiday”. And after her passing, the Academy bestowed the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award upon her, posthumously, which our guest accepted on her behalf. Audrey Hepburn was one of the first people to be an EGOT winner. She won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and 2 Tony Awards. She also won dozens of other awards including 3 BAFTA Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award. And the American Film Institute named her the third greatest female screen legend of all time. She was the first celebrity to have her own fragrance, called “L’interdit”, created by Givenchy in 1967. But beyond all of that – beyond her iconic beauty, glamour, fashion sense, elegance and warmth, there was Audrey Hepburn the monumentally generous humanitarian. She was the truly the walking definition of “the milk of human kindness”. She never forgot that, immediately after the war, an organization which later became UNICEF, brought food, medicine and clothing to her community in Holland, where she lived as a child during the Nazi occupation. And so, in the last 6 years of her life, as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she made numerous trips to the world’s most impoverished and war-torn countries, especially in Africa, advocating passionately and tirelessly on behalf of the children being devasted by disease, famine and genocide. President George Bush Sr. presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her contribution to humanity. And if you go to the UNICEF Headquarters in New York, you will see a beautiful statue called “The Spirit of Audrey”. Our guest, who is the son of Audrey Hepburn and the iconic actor, director, producer and writer, Mel Ferrer, has had a successful career in the film industry for many years. Shortly after his beloved mother passed away in 1993, he and his brother Luca created he Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, a charity that continues the humanitarian work and honours the legacy of his dear mother. He’s been touring the world with his exhibition, entitled "Intimate Audrey", raising funds for his non-profit organization. In 2003, he released a wonderfully poignant book entitled, “Audrey Hepburn: An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers”, and all of his royalties went to the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund. And in 2020, he and his wife Karin, published “Little Audrey's Daydream”, a children's book about his mother’s childhood in Nazi-occupied Europe. Proceeds from the book benefit the European Organisation for Rare Diseases. About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guests, David Fantle & Tom Johnson, are co-authors who last appeared on our show to discuss their landmark book entitled, “Hollywood Heyday: 75 Candid Interviews with Golden Age Legends”. The interviews contained in that book were conducted when our guests were mere teenagers living in Minnesota, visiting Hollywood in the hopes of meeting movie stars. And boy, did they ever!
Since then, our guests have gone on to have distinguished careers. David Fantle has been interviewing, writing, and speaking about Hollywood’s Golden Age stars for 45 years, and he’s an adjunct professor of film at Marquette University. Tom Johnson is a former senior editor at Netflix, and he’s written movie reviews and features for many publications including E! Online, Movie-phone, and People magazine. His writing has been recognized with a Minnesota Newspaper Association achievement award and a National Hearst Foundation award.
They’re here today to discuss their brand new book entitled, “C’mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”. This well-researched and illuminating book chronicles how Judy Garland’s last MGM movie, and her 3rd and final film with co-star Gene Kelly, was conceived, cast and filmed, despite the troubled atmosphere of drama and heartache, and the sometimes overwhelming obstacles and challenges surrounding the production.
The book is jam-packed with little-known and newly uncovered details about the people in front of and behind the cameras, and it examines the enduring legacy of the movie, including some fascinating insights provided by Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft, Gene Kelly’s daughter Kerry Kelly Novick, and other celebrities including Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Tommy Tune and Michael Finestine.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Rena Lipiner Katz, Author, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor” | 22 Sep 2023 | 00:32:52 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Rena Lipiner Katz, Author, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor” About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Rena Lipiner Katz, has written a compelling and insightful book about a subject that’s near and dear to my heart. It’s a memoir entitled, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor”.
Born in New York and raised by parents whose lives were irrevocably shaped by the trauma they endured during World War 2, she grew up in the shadow of the atrocities of the Holocaust. It’s well known that the terror that Holocaust survivors experienced, delivered to MY generation, an overabundance of fear and anxiety, and a predisposition to feel stress.
Our guest grew up believing that the price of her parents’ survival, and indeed, of her own birth, was a life of sorrow, anxiety and guilt. In her book, she explores how her parents’ childhood trauma as Holocaust victims, fundamentally shaped her emotional and physiological development. She chronicles her journey and her determination to forge a life separate from the legacy of the Holocaust, which she refers to as her “scorched birthright”. But in order to do that, she had to first understand how her vicarious absorption of her parents’ horrific experiences during the war, impacted her world view, her relationships, and the myriad of choices she made as a child, wife and mother.
She shares with us, in a very personal way, what it means to be a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor, and how she unravelled and ultimately healed the trauma of her inherited past, and eventually triumphed over tragedy and despair, and found a life filled with meaning, peace of mind and love.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Jeff Lieberman, Writer, Director, Producer, “BELLA! This Woman Belongs In The House” | 07 Aug 2023 | 00:32:01 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jeff Lieberman, Writer, Director, Producer, “BELLA! This Woman Belongs In The House”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Jeff Lieberman, is an award-winning journalist, producer and filmmaker whose documentary films have won him world wide acclaim.
His 2013 film entitled “Re-emerging: the Jews of Nigeria” got rave reviews at the world’s most prestigious film festivals and was proclaimed by critics as one of the must-see documentaries of the year. In 2015 he released his celebrated film entitled, “The Amazing Nina Simone”, which had a hugely successful theatrical run in 10 countries and is widely considered to be THE definitive cinematic tribute to this legendary music artist.
And now, our guest is about to release a monumentally important film about the first and the greatest female trailblazer in the history of American politics: the unstoppable force of nature known as Bella Abzug. In 1970, when America – and the world – was a patriarchy ruled by men, Bella Abzug challenged the status quo, running a groundbreaking grass roots campaign from the streets of Manhattan, that elevated her all the way to the halls of Congress from 1971 to 1977. With her irrepressible energy, fearless Bronx swagger, and captivatingly blunt oratorical frankness, she was determined to break up the “old boys’ club”, and that she did. She battled for women’s rights, seniors’ rights, children’s rights, gay rights, racial equality - in fact, she fought for civil rights for everyone. She fought vigorously against the Vietnam War. She endured the mounting forces from both the right and the left, and the powers of the Nixon Administration, the CIA, FBI, and of course, the media. The film is entitled, “Bella: This Woman’s Place is in the House”, and it won the prestigious Library of Congress Ken Burns Prize for Film.
This fascinating and compelling film includes never-before-seen home movies, audio diaries, newly-discovered news footage, and interviews with Hilary Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Shirley MacLaine, Lily Tomlin, Gloria Steinem, Marlo Thomas, and many more. There can be no question that Bella Abzug paved the way for future generations of female leadership, not only in politics, but in EVERY field. And thanks to our guest, the whole world is FINALLY going to know this amazing woman once and for all.

After seeing “Some Like it Hot” during my recent trip to New York, I became OBSESSED with getting this FABULOUS woman to appear on our show. And today, despite her grueling performance schedule, she has graciously agreed to grant me this interview.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Marsha Warfield, Renowned Actress & Comedienne, Roz from “Night Court” | 23 Jul 2024 | 00:47:48 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Marsha Warfield, Renowned Actress & Comedienne, Roz from “Night Court” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Marsha Warfield is highly popular actress and comedienne who is perhaps best known for her portrayal of the tough, wise-cracking, no-nonsense bailiff “Roz Russell” on the classic sitcom “Night Court.” She also played “Dr. Maxine Douglas” in “Empty Nest”, and “Toni Wilson” in “9-1-1”, and she’s made guest appearances on dozens of other TV shows including “The Richard Pryor Show , “Riptide”, “Family Ties”, “Cheers”, “Touched by an Angel” and many more. And yes, she was the voice of the mail carrier in “The Addams Family”. And in the early 90s, she even hosted a wonderful talk show of her own, “The Marsha Warfield Show.” She’s also appeared in many great movies including “Doomsday Rock”, “Caddyshack 2”, “Anything for Love”, “Mask”, “They Call me Bruce”, “The Marva Collins Story”, “Miracles Across 125th Street”, “A Holiday I Do” and many more. But in my opinion, the best way to experience the brilliant talent of our guest, is when she’s being her hilarious and insightful self, on stage, doing stand-up comedy. And she’s been doing that a long time. She won the San Francisco International Comedy Competition in 1979. She’s made dozens of appearances on late night talk shows and comedy specials including, “Comic Relief”, “An Evening at the Improv”, “The Comedy Store”, “Funny Women of a Certain Age”, and most recently, the Netflix documentary, “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution.” And who can ever forget her classic comedy album, “This is Not Gross, This is Important”, in which she provides a no-holds-barred exploration of the subject on everyone's mind: sex. She’s got a fabulous web-show on YouTube called “Midnight in the Marsha-verse”, in which she shares her trademark wit and wisdom with celebrity guests in thought-provoking and insightful conversations. She’s currently on tour, performing to sold out audiences, and she’s funnier than ever, tackling a wide variety of issues including everything from politics, the realities of being a Black gay woman, and her love affair with pizza.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells | 04 Jul 2023 | 00:43:19 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells
About Harvey's guest:
One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us.
Today’s guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty. She’s the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental.
Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don’t You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody’s favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics.
As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don’t Know Enough About You”, “It’s a Good Day”, and “Manana”. For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters. She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don’t Run”, and many more. She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly’s Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955.
Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President’s Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award.
Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms. But for her millions of fans, it’s all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Phyllis Taylor, Life Coach, Mediator, Motivational Speaker, Author, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars” | 30 Jun 2023 | 00:39:21 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Phyllis Taylor, Life Coach, Mediator, Motivational Speaker, Author, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Phyllis Taylor, is a remarkable woman who reinvented herself in a most innovative and unique way, following her retirement from a 30-year career as a paralegal, technical writer and training specialist at a major law firm.
After attending one of Oprah Winfrey’s public speaking engagements, she decided to become a volunteer in prisons, where, for the past decade, she has worked with countless male and female inmates to develop their self esteem, anger management, problem solving skills, positive thinking, and a variety of life skills and coping mechanisms to help them in the rehabilitative process.
Her unique combination of interpersonal skills, compassion, common sense and a huge heart, made her an immensely popular and sought-after personality within the jail system, and she was even awarded “Volunteer of the Year” at one of Canada’s largest women’s prisons.
Her experiences in the jails, and the many insights she learned not only about the correctional system, but from the prisoners she worked with, are the subject of her fascinating book entitled, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars”.
This is an entertaining, moving and inspirational book full of empathy and profound perceptions about an almost totally neglected and forgotten segment of society. Her book resonated with me on multiple levels, not only because of my 26 year career as a family and criminal court judge, but because this woman has articulated so beautifully, the key to what it means to live a meaningful and purposeful life.
In addition to her work in prisons and as a writer, she’s a certified life coach, mediator and motivational speaker. But in my opinion, she’s much, much more than that. She’s a HEALER.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Matt Baume, Podcaster and Author, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture” | 23 May 2023 | 00:51:00 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Matt Baume, Podcaster and Author, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture” About Harvey's guest: Today’s guest, Matt Baume, is a writer, podcaster, and video-maker whose work focuses on pop culture and issues of particular interest to the LGBTQ+ community. His popular online YouTube series, “Culture Cruise”, explores surprising behind-the-scenes stories from film and television history. And his podcast interview show, “The Sewers of Paris”, is about how queer people's lives are shaped by our favorite books, movies, music, and shows. He’s also known for his shows “Weekly Debrief” and “Marriage News Watch”. And he’s the co-creator of the comedy podcast & live show “Queens of Adventure”. His first book, entitled “Defining Marriage: Voices From a 40-year Labour of Love”, chronicles the compelling personal stories of the most prominent pioneers and champions who fought for the legalization of same-sex marriage. And today, he's here to talk about his brand new book entitled, “Hi Honey, I’m Homo: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture”. The book gives us an informative and entertaining analysis of how, starting in the early 70s, situation comedies like “All in the Family”, “Soap”, “Barney Miller”, “Cheers”, “The Golden Girls”, and many more American TV shows, used comedy as a medium to deliver provocative and progressive messages and lessons about bigotry, tolerance and sexuality. From the hidden and subtle metaphors in “Bewitched”, to the studio politics on shows like Ellen DeGeneres’ sitcom, and “Friends”, to the groundbreaking triumphant victories on “Will and Grace”, and “Modern Family”, the book shows us that positive media depictions of minorities on TV shows, have a demonstrable real-life impact in shaping public attitudes, fostering tolerance, acceptance and empathy. | Harvey Brownstone Interviews Legends Roy Rogers & Dale Evans’ Granddaughter, Julie Rogers Pomilia | 20 May 2023 | 00:35:56
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans’ Granddaughter, Julie Rogers Pomilia, Author, “Your Heroes My Grandparents”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Julie Rogers Pomilia, is the granddaughter of one of the most beloved couples in the history of show business – the King and Queen of the Westerns, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
They co-starred in 88 movies. They had a radio show for 9 years, and starting in the 50’s, they were on TV almost continuously, starting with the Roy Rogers Show, the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Show, Happy Trails Theatre, and they appeared in dozens of variety and talk shows and award shows throughout their lives. They recorded over 400 songs and sold millions of records.
Roy Rogers was the #1 Western box office star for 11 years in a row, from 1943 to 1954. He has FOUR stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his contribution to TV, radio, music and the movies. And he’s the only performer to have been inducted TWICE into the Country Music Hall of Fame, once as part of the Sons of the Pioneers, and the 2nd time as an individual performer. He was so incredibly popular back in the 50s and 60s, that there were over 400 toys and merchandising items with Roy Rogers’ name on them. There was even a chain of Roy Rogers Restaurants.
And Dale Evans was an immensely successful star in her own right. She wrote their iconic theme song, “Happy Trails”, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008, and was named one of the top 100 western songs of all time by the Western Writers of America. And get this: Dale Evans also wrote the classic Sunday School song, “The Bible Tells Me So”. She also wrote 29 books, including her mega-best seller, “Angel Unaware”, inspired by their child Robin, who was born with Down Syndrome, and who died 2 days before her 2nd birthday.
Dale Evans has 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for her work in movies and on television. Although WE knew Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the King and Queen of the Westerns, our guest knew them as simply, Grandma and Grandpa.
She’s just released a wonderful, heartwarming book entitled, “Your Heroes, My Grandparents: A Granddaughter’s Love.” The book gives us an intimate look at who Roy Rogers and Dale Evans really were, not only as superstars, but especially as devoted partners, parents of 9 children, and grandparents of 16 children.
Our guest is an elementary school teacher who’s spent the last 20 years travelling across the country, to western festivals, fairs and rodeos, to sing, tell stories, sit on panels, ride in parades, and meet with fans to honour and celebrate the legacy of her beloved grandparents and keep their memory alive. She and her 2 sisters sang and performed around the country in a group called “The Rogers Legacy”, and she co-hosted a popular radio show called “Around the Barn”. And she and her husband Gino run the Gino Pomilia Baseball Camp every summer in Larkspur, California. And for many years she’s ridden horseback in the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Susan Silver, Author, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms” | 11 May 2023 | 00:35:52 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Susan Silver, Author, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Susan Silver, is a show business trailblazer. She was one of the first women to have a successful career as a television comedy writer, in an industry overwhelmingly dominated by men.
Back in the late 60s’, and despite being the youngest runner up for a prestigious Writers Guild Award for a script she’d written in graduate school, the only open door for a female writer in Hollywood was as a secretary. She worked her way up to be producer of a TV show starring comedian Mort Sahl, and then got hired as a casting director on the groundbreaking TV show, “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”. When the show’s producer, George Schlatter, refused to allow a woman to join his writing team – offering her a job as a writer’s assistant instead - she pivoted into the world of TV sitcoms, and never looked back.
She wrote for some of the most iconic shows of all time, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Maude, The Partridge Family, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Square Pegs, and many more. In fact, our guest wrote the episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show called “The Square Shaped Room”, which won Ed Asner an Emmy Award. She also wrote TV movies including “The Couple Takes a Wife” starring Paula Prentiss and Bill Bixby, and “The Girl Who Came Gift Wrapped”, starring Karen Valentine and Farrah Fawcett.
She’s one of the founding members of “Women in Film”, and she’s taught comedy writing at the Television Academy, and lectured at the Paley Center, and at numerous universities. She’s appeared on TV many times, on CNN, HLN and The Today Show to name only a few. She’s had her own weekly radio commentary on Robin Hood Radio called “Susan Says”. And she’s written op-ed columns for The New York Times – AND for 4 years she wrote a highly entertaining column about dating, called “The Search For Mr. Adequate”, on NEW YORK SOCIAL DIARY DOT COM.
And FINALY, in 2017, she released her brilliant, hilarious, sometimes salacious, and very insightful memoir entitled, “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms”. This book was such an enjoyable read, that I hated to get to the last page. And let me tell you: the episode describing a highly unusual medical “event” resulting from a particularly satisfying encounter with a vibrator, is most definitely worth TEN TIMES the price of the book.

| Harvey Brownstone Interviews Nelson Mandela’s Personal Assistant, Zelda La Grange | 08 May 2023 | 00:56:57 | |
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nelson Mandela’s Personal Assistant, Zelda La Grange, Author, “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela: A Memoir”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Zelda La Grange, has had the most remarkable and life-altering career working side by side with one of the greatest and most beloved statesmen in history: Nelson Mandela.
She grew up in apartheid South Africa as a white Afrikanner, in a world of white supremacy and black oppression, separation and segregation. Black and white people were not allowed to socialize or congregate in any way outside of an employment relationship. And people of colour were not allowed to vote.
Our guest was raised to embrace the concept of apartheid. But her perspectives, attitudes and beliefs – and in fact, her entire life – were totally transformed, starting in 1994, when at the age of 23, she began working as a typist in the office of South Africa’s 1st democratically elected Black President, Nelson Mandela – the man who was the voice of the oppressed, and who personified the liberation struggle, having spent 27 years in prison.
Over the course of almost 20 years, our guest served President Mandela in various capacities, both during and after his Presidency, going from typist to Assistant Private Secretary, to Private Secretary, to Manager and Spokesperson for his office, until his death on December the 5th, 2013. She accompanied him on dozens of official visits and personal appearances, to virtually every corner of the globe.
In 2014, she published her highly acclaimed, deeply moving and compelling memoir entitled, “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela”. She not only shares some of the most memorable moments during her time at Mr. Mandela’s side – but MOST IMPORTANTLY, this is an inspiring story of love and hope, in which she candidly explains the monumental impact that Nelson Mandela had on her life, and more specifically, on her personal transformation from a believer in apartheid to a believer in full equality for all people.
In 2014, her book was named the International Bestseller of the Year, and it’s been translated into 13 languages. Our guest has received many awards for her dedication and service to Mr. Mandela, including the 2008 Woman of the Year Award by the South African Press.
And she’s one of the most sought-after speakers on the international lecture circuit, having given inspirational and motivational presentations at the most prestigious conferences and events throughout the world. She’s also co-hosted a national TV talk show in South Africa.
And in 2019 she co-produced a documentary about Nelson Mandela entitled, “Madiba: A Glorious Human Achievement”. She was also a guest curator to an international exhibition on the life and times of Nelson Mandela that has been touring internationally for the past 5 years.

And then, in 2009, the whole world was rooting for her in the British cooking competition reality show, “Hell’s Kitchen”, which she won. And most recently, she can be seen in “Swan Song”, co-starring Jennifer Coolidge.
In 2015, she released an entertaining, poignant, spiritually uplifting and delicious memoir entitled, “Recipes for Life: My Memories”. His collaborations with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on the phenomenally successful and beloved shows, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Evita”, brought him worldwide acclaim, as one of the greatest and most innovative lyricists of the modern age. He went on to co-write “Blondel” with Stephen Oliver, and “Chess”, with Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA. With Sir Elton John, he wrote “The Lion King”, “Aida”, and “The Road to El Dorado”. He collaborated with Alan Menken on “Aladdin”, “King David”, and the theatrical production AND live action re-make of “Beauty and the Beast”, which is the highest-grossing live action musical of all time. He co-wrote a musical called “Heathcliff”, based on Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”, which produced a wonderful album featuring Sir Cliff Richard and the late Olivia Newton-John. And with composer Stuart Brayson, he co-wrote the musical production, “From Here to Eternity”, based on the 1953 James Jones novel. This man’s list of accomplishments is nothing short of jaw-dropping. His shows have broken box office records in the West End, on Broadway, and around the world. Many of his songs have become global #1 hits, including “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, “Don’t Cry for me Argentina”, “I Know Him So Well”, “Someday Out of the Blue” – and he even wrote the lyrics to my favourite song from a James Bond movie, “All Time High”, from “Octopussy”, recorded by Rita Coolidge. And speaking of #1 hits, he’s won THREE Academy Awards and THREE Golden Globe Awards for his songs “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King”, and “You Must Love Me”, from the 1996 movie, “Evita”. He received 2 more Oscar nominations for “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” from “The Lion King”. He’s been nominated for 9 Tony Awards and won 3 – 2 for “Evita” and 1 for “Aida”. In fact, “Evita” was the 1st British musical to win the Tony award for Best Musical. He’s been nominated for 12 Grammy awards, and won FIVE. And, in 2018, when he won an Emmy award for the live TV performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, he became an EGOT winner, one of only 18 people in the world to have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. He’s been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the American Theatre Hall of Fame. And in recognition of his work in film and theatre, he was inducted as a Disney Legend. He’s received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And last but most certainly not least, in 1994 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Country Music Superstar Lynn Anderson’s Personal Manager, Michael Dempsey About Harvey's guest: If you’re a fan of our show, you’ll know that one of our most popular features is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, in which we pay tribute to legendary stars who are no longer with us. Today, we’re honouring one of the most beloved and iconic female recording artists and performers in the history of country music: Lynn Anderson. She recorded 52 albums and 72 singles, 50 of which were top 40 hits,18 reached the Top-10, and 12 captured the No. 1 spot. She was known for songs like “You’re My Man”, “How Can I Unlove You”, “Keep Me in Mind”, “What a Man My Man is” - and of course, her phenomenal worldwide crossover smash hit in 1970, “Rose Garden”. That song made her an international superstar, and a trailblazer. In fact, she was the first female country artist to have a #1 record worldwide, she was the first female country performer to appear on The Tonight Show, and she was the first female country performer to headline at Madison Square Garden. Her multi-platinum “Rose Garden” album was the highest grossing album by a female recording artist for 27 years until Shania Twain broke that record in 1997. Lynn Anderson won a Grammy Award, 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, an American Music Award, 3 Billboard Magazine Awards, a Country Music Association Award, and a People’s Choice Award. She was also named Artist of the Decade by Record World, and in 2019 she was inducted into the Western Music Association Hall of Fame AND the North American Country Music Association Hall of Fame. In 2002, Country Music Television named her one of the "40 Greatest Women of Country Music", and Rolling Stone included her on their list of the "100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time". She’s such a legend, that she’s even had a ROSE named after her by the American Rose Society. Today’s guest, Michael Dempsey, started out as president of Lynn Anderson’s official fan club at the age of 18. He then became her accountant, then her booking agent for over 10 years, and finally, he was her manager for the last 12 years of her life, until she passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in 2015 at the age of 67. And get this: in a highly publicized interview, Jimmy Stewart said that our guest was the ONLY child actor he’d EVER worked with who was worth a damn. What a compliment! And of course, EVERY “Lost in Space” fan was OVERJOYED to see him appear as “the real Dr. Smith” in the 2018 Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space”. Throughout his life, he’s been a highly accomplished and popular musician, both as a solo artist AND as a member of several bands, including “Redwood”, “The Generators”, “Action Skulls” and “Barnes & Barnes”, whose song, “Fish Heads” became a worldwide hit. He’s released over a dozen albums. And he got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition. Besides being an actor and musician, he’s had a prolific voiceover career, and he narrated over 50 episodes of A & E Biography. He was even the voice of Farmers Insurance for 11 years. He’s created and written numerous comic books, screenplays and novels. And for 4 years, he produced, wrote and hosted his own weekly radio show. And now, FINALLY, he’s released his highly anticipated memoir entitled, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy: A Memoir”, which gives us a very insightful, honest and entertaining look not only at his multi-faceted career, but more importantly, we get to know him as a son, grandson, husband, father, grandfather and human being.
