Leanne Pero is a breast cancer survivor, author and woman on a mission to share the stories of black and ethnic minority cancer patients. “I felt ashamed, I felt there was something wrong with me”, Leanne talks about the trauma of her diagnosis and chemo, and the stigma that black women face when diagnosed with cancer. She was told she had more chance of winning the lottery than actually having cancer when she initially tried to get a diagnosis at 31. Leanne is talking about her involvement with the new Coppafeel campaign and shining a light on black and ethnic minority cancer patients. She began blogging about her experience, and it wasn't long before she was contacted by women in similar positions who expressed their appreciation for seeing a Black Woman speaking out about cancer and mental health. Now Leanne is telling the untold cancer stories of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority women making these women more visible on cancer campaigns encouraging people to check their breasts for lumps. And Kate and Ella Robertson are teaching us how to be an activist. Kate is the co- founder of the organisation One Young World which, “identifies, promotes and connects the world’s most impactful young leaders to create a better world” They’re talking about their book; “How to Make a Difference”, which as Kate explains stemmed from answering the questions she received - “how can I be more involved and take more action”. Maggie Oliver the Detective that revealed the truth of the Rochdale grooming scandal, she is talking about the journey of detailing her experiences in her new book survival. Maggie is sharing the deeper story to what was going on her life at the time of the scandal in 2004 & 2005. She is explaining to Harriet and Amanda the battle she faced trying to get justice for the victims of the rochdale scandal, the stress and frustrations as she was repeatedly ignored and turned away by higher ranked officers. Jo Blackwell is the author of 'Oh Crap - I'm 50!' and is offering a helping hand to women who are possibly heading into a "mid-life crisis". Jo explains what peri- menopause is and the affects that it can have on women, she shares her own experience; as Jo was approaching 50, to battle the anxiety and depression that came with her peri menopause, she started a blog and began writing about her "mid-life crisis" Jo found an audience who connected with what she had to say, and now she has written a whole book sharing her thoughts and emotions on everything from, her marriage, turning 50 and losing a part of her identity when her last child left home. Jo says she is "on a mission to change attitudes to ageing” showing women there is an amazing life post 50! The Ladies are joined by Wally Funk the ultimate badass role model for women in space! It has been 50 years since the infamous Apollo 11 left for space in 1969, but what about the lesser known Mercury 13? Wally Funk was one of the 13 women who passed all the same test as the men of Apollo 11 but their mission into the solar system never actually took place. Wally shares her infatuation for aviation and says she had her first flying lesson at just age 9! Wally is joined by science writer Sue Nelson who has taken all of Wally's incredible stories and made them part of aeronautical history documenting everything in her book; Wally Funk's Race for Space: The Extraordinary Story of a Female Aviation Pioneer. Harriet Emma and by Anjula hear about her strength in carrying on despite not achieving her dream of going into space when she had passed all the relevant tests, Wally carried on taking aeronautical tests, exploring aviation, and even going to become an investigator, she shares some of the details of her amazing life and career, Higher Faster Longer is her motto for anything she takes on in life and her passion for life is evident! Wally speaks about the freedom her mother gave her as a child the life lessons she was taught asa child and how living close to Native Indians made her the strong tenacious woman she is today, we also hear about the sexism that female astronauts have faced over history! "I can't get over the fact that MY music helps others!" Marie White has gone from learning to write songs whilst recovering from a broken knee to Glastonbury!! Our Badass Ladies Harriet, Emma and guest host Amanda Prowse are joined Winner of Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition 2019 Marie White. Marie will be performing across 4 stages over the festival and is sharing her thoughts, feelings and nerves with the ladies ahead of her Glasto debut.
Marie admits she started making music as a way to channel her energy and focus her attention after a knee operation left her unable to play sports, as a teenager she thought she would end up in an athletic career, now, she's amazed that her words and songs are moving people to tears! She says that her music is so personal and compares it to letting people read through her diary, although, she struggles to listen to her own music and even admits to getting a "bit sweaty" in the studio as Harriet and Emma play Marie's new track "I Want You To Know" the song isn't played on the podcast but can be heard here. Coming from parents who lived with apartheid, Mandu shares with the Badass women her journey of getting into politics and the life changing event that caused her to join the Women's Equality Party, who, in the past few years have grown in support and managed to have an influence on the country with a "shoestring" budget and a small amount of airtime and media coverage. She talks leading the way for the other major parties on various issues Mandu and her team have brought to light and seen policies start to change. Despite the name, Mandu is keen to have full representation in the party and recognises that Women’s Equality Party needs to embrace and fairly represent as many societal and minority groups. The ladies also discuss the prospect of Boris Johnson being the UK's next prime minister And how are England's lionesses fairing in France at the Women's World Cup?
