After years of addiction, violence, and survival, Arend Pechawis found healing through honesty and self-reflection. From gunpoint to gratitude — this is his story of transformation.14 Nov 202500:46:33

Send us Fan Mail

When Arend was pistol-whipped during a drug deal gone wrong, it wasn’t the first time he’d stared down a gun. But it was one of the moments that forced him to look at what his life had become.

Raised by a single mother in a home marked by violence and survival, Arend grew up watching abuse, bouncing between cities, and learning early how to hide pain. By grade seven, he was drinking at school — chasing the same numbness that had destroyed generations before him.

As addiction took hold, Arend hustled, dealt cocaine, and was nearly killed more than once. But it wasn’t until his father died — and he watched someone overdose beside the hospital bed — that the reality of addiction hit home.

Now more than a decade sober, Arend speaks openly about trauma, accountability, forgiveness, and the hard truth that healing doesn’t happen when we blame others. It begins when we finally look inward.

This is the story of a man who turned pain into purpose — and learned that real strength means allowing yourself to feel.

"It Was Fire That Saved Me": The Recovery Story of Derek Racette. 07 Nov 202500:53:22

Send us Fan Mail

At three years old, Derek Racette burned a trailer to the ground — the same trailer where he had been sexually assaulted by a family member. Decades later, after years of addiction, violence, and loss, he finally understood why.

Derek’s story traces a lifetime of pain, power, and redemption — from growing up in a home filled with addiction and violence, to becoming a teacher, drug dealer, and eventually a man on the edge of suicide. His daughter’s fentanyl overdose nearly ended his life, but instead became the beginning of his recovery.

Through detox, ceremony, and the rediscovery of his Métis spirituality, Derek found healing in the teachings of the tipi, the drum, and his culture. What began as an act of destruction became a path toward light, service, and rebirth.

This conversation is raw and unfiltered — a look at trauma, resilience, and what it takes to survive when the fire inside has burned everything else away.

Don't think you hear voices? Who is reading this to you then? When Cece first came onto my radar and I noticed she specialized in the Internal Family System, I though she was talking about family dynamics, boy was I wrong. Frankly Cece blew my mind when she started talking about the Family dynamic we all have in our own head.

Kimberley Drake escaped extreme domestic violence with her now 4 year old daughter. She joined me in studio to share her story for the first time. Must listen.11 Nov 202300:51:21

Send us Fan Mail

At a young age, Kim found herself trapped in a cycle of extremely toxic relationships, until she got locked into the most abusive relationship of all.

As the abuse got worse, the reasons to escape piled up.

"His abuse came to a point where he put our daughter in danger. I fled to Saskatchewan with my daughter but without permission to take her, I was court ordered back."

Join us for this National Domestic Violence Awareness Month special as I talk with Kim about what happened, and to what ends she went to finally be free from the madness.

"I’m happy to say that after 2 years of living in BC, my daughter and I were granted relocation to SK and we just celebrated our second year in Saskatoon. I still have a long way to go in healing, but I am a much stronger woman and mother."

We are honored to have Kim step forward to share her story publicly for the first time here in studio on the Hard Knox Talks Podcast.

Buckle up.
