| No Drop Bag, No Service, No Quit with Brianna Mees | 08 Oct 2026 | 01:10:27 | |
After wildfires stopped one 100-mile attempt at mile 60, smoke-related illness kept her from starting another, and a second Oregon Cascades was canceled altogether, Brianna Mees had every reason to wonder whether her first 100-mile finish would ever happen. But at Oregon’s Mountain Lakes 100, the hospital pharmacist and former collegiate runner finally got her shot—and crossed the finish line in roughly 27 hours and 20 minutes. Brianna joins Stephanie to break down the full Mountain Lakes experience: remote race logistics, dispersed camping, long stretches without cell service, rocky trails, tight cutoffs, a missing drop bag, worsening shin pain, and the overnight miles before a pacer finally joins the party. They also revisit the chance meeting on a miserable climb when a quick Happy Endings pep talk helped Brianna stop chasing a perfect time, eat something, reset, and start crushing the course. This episode is a candid celebration of everything ultrarunning can be: beautiful, painful, ridiculous, and deeply communal. From women dominating the race to swollen feet, trail hallucinations, and a mysterious paddle raft in the forest, Brianna’s story is proof that a bad stretch does not have to become a bad race—and that even when the original plan falls apart, you can still do something incredible. | Building a Better Ultra with Wes Plate | 02 Sep 2026 | 01:31:02
Wes Plate returns to HappyCast with plenty to catch up on, starting with a completely different kind of ultrarunning adventure: the 314-mile Vol State Road Race. With no crew, no pacers, no traditional aid stations and miles of Tennessee heat and humidity ahead of him, Wes found himself more nervous before a race than he had been in years. He shares what it was like stepping outside his familiar world of trail 200s, relying on gas stations and community “angel stations,” meeting people along the way and discovering why journey running has become the latest thing he can’t get out of his head. The conversation heads back to Montana for year two of the Copper Kings 100, including the wild unofficial 200-mile version completed by Doug Watson, Drew Watson and Audra Rundle. Wes also takes us behind the scenes of the technology he’s building to make races run more smoothly—from real-time aid station check-ins and runner updates to an automated live stream that follows the action around the course. Copper Kings continues to grow, with plans for a 200-runner field in 2027 and some major news: the race will officially become a Western States qualifier. Then Wes introduces Ultra Crew Companion, the app he originally built after seeing how difficult it can be for crews to manage constantly changing pace charts during an ultra. The app can update projected arrival times as a race unfolds, integrate tracking information, sync between crew members, work offline and even import a runner’s existing race plan from a photo using AI. What started as another problem Wes wanted to solve is quickly becoming something much bigger—and another example of how his worlds of ultrarunning, race directing, software development and creativity continue to collide. | Finding Your Limits with Josh Sprague | 26 Aug 2026 | 01:19:43
What happens when endurance stops being about the finish line and starts becoming a way to explore what you’re capable of? Stephanie sits down with Josh Sprague, founder and CEO of Orange Mud, to talk about his journey from growing up as a country kid who loved exploring outside to racing ultras, Ironman events, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and multi-day adventure races. Josh shares how adventure racing became one of his favorite ways to keep endurance sports fresh—and why sometimes changing the challenge is exactly what keeps the love of the sport alive. From two unsuccessful attempts at the Leadville 100 to a 550-mile gravel race where a mysteriously disabled phone kept him from quitting, Josh has no shortage of stories about pushing through the moments when stopping sounds a whole lot easier. He recounts outrunning a tornado on a bike across South Dakota, hallucinating—or perhaps being visited by—his late golden retriever during a 720-mile race, and discovering the strange clarity that comes from spending days alone with nothing but your thoughts. Along the way, Stephanie and Josh dig into the mental side of endurance: DNFs, solitude, self-doubt, staying positive, and the realization that sometimes the only difference between finishing and quitting is continuing to move forward. Josh also shares how frustration with traditional hydration gear led him to build the first Orange Mud prototype in his garage and eventually leave his corporate career to grow the company alongside his wife. But even after decades of chasing big adventures, he’s still figuring out what the next chapter looks like. After a recent motorcycle crash forced him to reconsider how much risk is worth taking, the conversation turns to a bigger question: How do you keep pursuing adventure without sacrificing the ability to keep adventuring for years to come? It’s an episode about endurance, perspective, knowing when to push, knowing when to pivot, and remembering that sometimes the biggest limits are simply the ones we’ve convinced ourselves exist. | How Tejas Trails Built a Texas Trail Running Legacy with Chris McWatters and David Smithey | 23 Aug 2026 | 01:05:59
Chris McWatters and David Smithey of Tejas Trails join the Happy Cast to talk about the races that have become Texas trail-running institutions—and the stories behind keeping them alive. From Rocky Raccoon and Bandera to the beautifully brutal Cactus Rose, Chris and Dave share what makes these events special, why self-sufficiency is part of the culture, and what it takes behind the scenes when Mother Nature decides to completely wreck the plan. There are cows eating course markers, emergency race relocations and, naturally, Andrew providing medical assistance while dressed as a chicken. Then we get into Tejas Trails’ newest experiment: the Frio Trio Zero Edition. Taking over the Frio Valley for a weekend, the event brings together night trail running, gravel biking, traditional trail racing, river floating and a full weekend built around the outdoor community. Chris and Dave explain how the idea grew out of an invitation from the communities around Leakey, Concan and Garner State Park—and why they decided to make the inaugural edition intentionally affordable while encouraging racers to spend their money with local businesses. We also talk about what makes a race worth creating when the calendar is already packed, the nerves that come with producing something completely new, and why the best adventures usually involve accepting that something is probably going to go wrong. Plus, Stephanie enters another school year surrounded by teenage drivers, Chris discovers the limitations of simultaneously having busted toes and a bad shoulder, Dave can't stop thinking about a chicken-fried steak, and Andrew mysteriously disappears from his own podcast exactly as everyone predicted. | A DNF, a Mountain Lion, and 100 Miles of Redemption with Jenny Arnzen | 12 Aug 2026 | 01:12:22
Stephanie set out for an ambitious summer challenge: take on the brutal Maah Daah Hey 100 in North Dakota and, just one week later, line up for another 100 miles at Lean Horse in South Dakota. But before she even reached the starting line, routine bloodwork finally gave her an explanation for months of struggling to regain her speed—extremely low ferritin. With only days to address it, she headed north anyway, determined to find out what her body could do. Joined by American record holder Jenny Arnzen, Stephanie breaks down just how unforgiving Maah Daah Hey became: triple-digit temperatures, huge stretches without aid, hot water baking in the sun, a shoe swallowed by mud, runners being rescued for heat-related issues, and the realization that she had badly underestimated a race that demanded more respect—and more crew support—than she had planned for. With time still on the clock, Stephanie made the decision to stop at 100K, preserving enough of herself to attempt South Dakota a week later. For once, the DNF didn't feel like failure. It felt like the right decision. After several days of recovery, Stephanie lined up at Lean Horse with nothing to prove and a little redemption on her mind. She ran smart from the beginning, embraced the rolling climbs and long descents, survived another round of heat, spotted a mountain lion along the way, and finished in 26:35—her fastest 100-miler in more than a year. Stephanie and Jenny talk about knowing when to push and when to stop, the importance of crew and community, why runners shouldn't project their own limitations onto someone else's goals, and why even a failed attempt can be something worth celebrating. Sometimes showing up brave means finishing. Sometimes it means making the call to come back another day. | Chasing Records Through the Burn Scar with Aaron Kubala | 15 Jul 2026 | 01:13:07
Aaron Kubala returns to the HappyCast after winning the Tahoe 200 and setting a new course record in 48 hours and 9 minutes. Aaron takes Andrew and Stephanie inside his preparation for the race, including unconventional training in Austin, weeks spent sleeping in a hypoxic tent, and the ambitious plan that originally had his crew targeting a 45-hour finish. He also explains how Tahoe fits into his larger pursuit of the 200-mile Triple Crown record as he prepares to take on Bigfoot and Moab. The race itself delivered everything a 200-miler could: a competitive field, battered quads, Tahoe lung, thorns buried in Aaron’s feet, and an infamous burn-scar section capable of bringing even elite runners to a crawl. Aaron recounts moving through the field, staying focused for nearly two straight days, and managing a frightening episode of blood in his urine without losing sight of the finish. He also shares what it was like racing in memory of his mother, who passed away from metastatic breast cancer only a few months before Tahoe. The conversation eventually wanders in true HappyCast fashion, with updates on Stephanie’s upcoming back-to-back 100-milers, Andrew’s abrupt move to Colorado, and the questionable decisions that led him to drive through the night before his first day at a new job. The group closes with a discussion about the financial realities of professional ultrarunning, the complicated relationship between athletes and sponsors, and whether Andrew’s increasingly expensive race bets qualify him as an official patron of the sport. | A 100-Mile Loop Around New York City | 07 Jul 2026 | 00:54:45
Stephanie is joined by Sam Stiles for a chaotic, funny, and heartfelt recap of the Great New York 100, a grassroots 100-mile loop around New York City. After meeting during the Connecticut 123, where they shared roughly 40 miles together, Stephanie reached out to Sam with a huge ask: come pace her through the night in New York, help navigate the city, and make sure she did not accidentally turn the race into what her friends lovingly called “the Murder Race.” Sam answered the call, commuting from Connecticut by car, train, and subway before jumping in for a 36-mile overnight pacing adventure. Together, Stephanie and Sam break down what makes this race so unique: the 5:00 AM start in Times Square, the route through parks, boardwalks, bridges, and city streets, the grassroots race logistics, the lack of bathrooms, the importance of headlamps, and the constant need to watch for course markings, traffic, bikes, and, yes, rats. From counting 11 oversized New York rats to flying down the Brooklyn Bridge with three miles to go, they share the details that made the race both ridiculous and unforgettable. The episode also zooms out into the bigger picture of ultra-running community. Stephanie reflects on the way Sam showed up for her in New York, then how she turned around days later to course mark and volunteer at Copper Kings in Montana. Sam shares what is next for him, including running in Colombia and future race possibilities, while Stephanie talks through recovery, upcoming back-to-back 100-milers, and the logistics that still have her nervous. At the heart of the episode is the reminder that ultra-running is full of wild ideas, generous people, and the kind of stories that only happen when someone says yes to doing something stupid with you. | Building Trails, Building Community: Mindy Coolman and the GOATZ Story | 15 Jun 2026 | 01:06:48
Stephanie sits down with Mindy Coolman, race director of Crown of the Crest and a key member of GOATZ (Greater Omaha Area Trail Runners), to explore what goes into creating memorable trail running experiences. From local 5Ks to challenging 100-mile events, Mindy shares the story behind GOATZ, the evolution of their race lineup, and the passion that fuels Nebraska’s growing trail running community. The conversation dives into the often-unseen side of race directing: recruiting volunteers, designing runner experiences, balancing logistics, and fostering the welcoming atmosphere that keeps athletes coming back year after year. Stephanie reflects on her recent experience at Crown of the Crest, while Mindy offers insight into what makes a race feel special long after runners cross the finish line. Along the way, they swap stories about ultra-running culture, race-day fueling, recovery, injuries, and the lessons that come from spending countless hours on the trail. From ambitious future race goals to the surprising appeal of sweaty pocket Oreos, this episode is a fun and honest look at the people, challenges, and community that make endurance sports so rewarding. | We're Still Here: Life, Running, and the Chaos In Between | 01 Jun 2026 | 01:23:18
After nearly two months apart, Andrew and Stephanie finally sit down behind the microphones again for one of the most personal and unscripted episodes of HappyCast yet. Between moves, injuries, career changes, dating adventures, and life simply getting in the way, the crew reflects on why the podcast went quiet and what they've been navigating away from the trails. Dylan may be off racing Possums 56K, but he's still very much part of the conversation as the hosts catch up on everything that's happened since Grasslands.

| Grasslands, Grit,and Women WhoKeep Showing Up with Lindsey Duffield | 13 May 2026 | 01:08:24 | |
This week on Happy Endings, Stephanie Stonebraker hosts guest, Lindsey Duffield for an episode full of big feelings, big miles, and a whole lot of women doing badass things. Before diving into Grasslands, Stephanie and Lindsey reflect on the heaviness surrounding Cocodona, while also celebrating Rachel Entrekin’s historic overall win and the powerful reminder that women are showing up, leading races, breaking records, and redefining what’s possible in ultrarunning. Lindsey shares her journey from losing 100 pounds and running her first road race in 2020 to discovering trail running, tackling her first 50-miler, completing the Lone Star Slam, earning a sub-24-hour 100-mile finish, and eventually taking on tough mountain races like Bear, Kettle Moraine, and Silamoo. She also revisits her first Grasslands 100, the muddy year that tested her to the core, and the people who helped get her to the finish when quitting felt close. The conversation centers on Lindsey’s most recent Grasslands finish, where extreme heat, disciplined fueling, friendship, pacers, and a little bit of scheming all came together. Lindsey talks about running most of the race with Sarah, recruiting Ashley to pace her final 50K, and realizing that her pacer was strong enough to almost drop her. The episode wraps with a reminder to chase the scary goals anyway, as Lindsey looks ahead to attempting the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning. | Running Across Connecticut | 16 Apr 2026 | 00:56:19
This week, Stephanie is holding it down solo and sitting down with Connecticut’s own Evan Titus. Andrew’s working, Dylan’s tied up, but the show rolls on—and honestly, this one feels like a classic “how did we get here?” kind of episode in the best way. Evan’s story is anything but traditional. From years of playing rugby to signing up for a random 10K in college, he walks through how one decision snowballed into marathons, 50 milers, and eventually 100Ks. It’s the kind of progression that doesn’t come from a perfectly mapped-out plan—it comes from curiosity, consistency, and just not putting the running shoes back down. The conversation dives into what it looks like to figure things out as you go, building fitness on the fly, and embracing the unknown as you step deeper into the ultra world. If you’ve ever felt like you don’t have the “perfect” background to get into endurance running, Evan’s story is a great reminder—you really just have to start. | Chasing Cutoffs and Finding Yourself in Kentucky | 25 Mar 2026 | 01:08:48
HappyCast is back with a new episode at what can only be described as “the speed of slug”—with a raw, unfiltered catch-up episode full of trail chaos, life updates, and a whole lot of honesty. Stephanie dives deep into her recent races, including LOViT and a tough DNF at a brutal Kentucky course, sharing what it’s like to chase cutoffs, navigate technical terrain, and show up completely solo. From sleeping in her car to learning she doesn’t need a crew or pacer, this episode is packed with hard-earned lessons and real growth. The conversation doesn’t shy away from the mental side of ultrarunning either—what it feels like to be proud and disappointed at the same time, how DNFs can humble you, and the ongoing internal battle between “I belong here” and “I have work to do.” Stephanie opens up about pushing into harder races, figuring out whether getting faster actually matters, and continuing to show up in spaces that feel uncomfortable—all while trying to inspire others to do the same. Andrew brings his signature humor and perspective, recapping the chaos of Sam’s Last Stand, a fat-ass-style race full of DNFs, unexpected wins, and unforgettable moments (including a runner pacing with a random dog). Together, they reflect on how far they’ve come—from running races together to navigating life, racing, and everything in between. It’s messy, hilarious, a little unhinged—and exactly what you’d expect from a HappyCast comeback episode. | Respect the Distance (And the Hip) | 18 Feb 2026 | 01:00:00
The band is back together — and by “band,” we mean three ultra runners in wildly different seasons of life trying to figure out who they are when they’re not toeing a 100+-mile start line. Dylan makes his long-awaited return to the mic and shares how 2025 humbled him at Rocky, why he’s stepping back to truly respect the 50K and 100K distances, and how sustainability (and maybe 2027 plans 👀) are shaping his next chapter. The HappyCast is back for its second episode of the season, and what better way to continue the chaos than to have John Farris return for this third episode - this time to talk about one of the most insane and unforgettable races yet: the Montane Winter Spine Race. This is a 268 mile foot race across the pond in the UK in the dead of winter that has developed quite the reputation. | Running It Your Way: Healing Miles, Bandera Chaos, and Burritos | 15 Jan 2026 | 01:27:57
After a month-long hiatus and plenty of concerned messages, HappyCast is officially back — and no, Andrew and Stephanie did not break up. In this Season 5 kickoff, the two dive straight into the chaos with candid catch-ups, unfiltered humor, and a surprisingly deep conversation about loneliness, dopamine hits, and why witty banter might actually be a mental health necessity. From AI-suggested “safe flirty texts” to starting arguments on Facebook just to feel something, Stephanie explains how being too quiet for too long can lead to… questionable choices. On the running side, Andrew recaps his current “waitlist surfing” era, the rise of the Burrito League (yes, burritos are a legitimate training incentive), and a wild Bandera weekend filled with heckling, aid station chaos, unexpected celebrities, and some truly elite volunteer moments. Bandera stories range from Molly Seidel’s historic performance to lei-wearing confusion at a small-town Texas bar, proving once again that trail running culture is equal parts grit and absurdity. The episode closes with reflection, reset energy, and a handoff to the rest of Season 5 — a season focused less on rankings and more on longevity, healing, and running races the way they’re meant to be run. DNFs are discussed without shame, big goals are still on the horizon, and both hosts agree on one thing: this podcast keeps them grounded. Welcome back to HappyCast — the banter is back, the miles are messy, and we’re just getting started. | Inside the Fall Creek 100: Course Creation, Community and Chaos | 03 Dec 2025 | 01:14:41
In this episode of HappyCast, we dive into a full, emotional, hilarious, and raw recap of the Fall Creek 100 in Tennessee — a race filled with waterfalls, scenic ridges, surprise proposals, mud, and a whole lot of internal battles. Stephanie is joined by Chuck Clark, who shared most of the 100 miles with her, and Race Director Scott Simcox, the creative mind behind the Fall Creek, Long Hunter, and Rim Runner races. Scott walks us through how he designs courses with intention: showcasing every overlook, waterfall, bridge, and scenic loop the park has to offer. We also learn about his volunteer-first family culture, the impact of tornado damage on trail systems, and why Fall Creek’s dorm setup might be one of the best race perks out there. Stephanie opens up about her toughest mental race to date — calling her mom at mile 30 in tears, dealing with self-doubt from previous DNFs, navigating humidity and trail math, and experiencing her first mid-race panic attack. Chuck shares how he tried (unsuccessfully) to medicate her attitude with potatoes for 12 straight hours, why they thought they were on the verge of missing cutoffs, and how a simple reminder — “You stack these because you know you can finish them” — helped shift the energy. We also talk crew magic, Peg’s legendary road-trip rescue, Kevin’s 50K-plus pacing effort, Mo’s volunteer hero arc, and the incredible Tennessee trail community that kept runners fed, supported, and cheerful through every loop. It’s emotional. It’s chaotic. It’s honest. And it’s a perfect look at what makes 100-milers so transformative. | The Wild Coastline: Katy Barber’s Journey Across PINS | 21 Nov 2025 | 01:22:47
On this episode of the HappyCast, we go in-depth with local Houstonian Katy Barber who just tackled the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) FKT. Located in Texas, and definitely NOT Galveston, this is the 4th longest beach in the WORLD and one of the most isolated places in the country, all tucked away on the largest unprotected barrier island in the world. This is a 65+ mile FKT that traverses the entire length of the beach, and no woman has ever attempted this feat before, and only two men have completed it. | RECAST: What is Happy Endings? | 13 Nov 2025 | 01:01:51
This week we’re taking it back to where it all began. While the crew is busy, we’re dipping into the archives and replaying the very first episode of HappyCast — the one that sparked the Happy Endings Trail Crew and everything that’s grown from it. In this throwback, you’ll hear the full origin story: how a chaotic weekend at Rocky Raccoon brought three underprepared runners together, the debut of the infamous beaver costume, the birth of the “weed wobble,” and the moment we realized this community was something special. The audio may be rough around the edges, and honestly… so were we — but the heart of what makes Happy Endings what it is today was already there. Whether you’re newer to the podcast or you’ve been with us since day one, enjoy this trip back to the beginning. We’ll be back with a new episode soon — but for now, here’s the throwback that started it all. | The Lone Finisher: Madeline Green’s Wild Ride at Cactus Rose | 05 Nov 2025 | 01:06:17
When brutal weather forced Cactus Rose to relocate to the unforgiving hills of Camp Eagle, most runners hesitated—but not Houston’s own Madeline Green. With no aid stations, no crew, and endless miles of mud, rain, and lightning, she pushed through 105 miles of chaos to become the only female finisher of one of Texas’ toughest ultramarathons. In this episode, Stephanie and Andrew dive into Madeline’s mindset—how she handled a last-minute course change, two nights alone on the trail, and the mental rollercoaster of a self-supported 100-miler. From training on Houston’s flatlands to conquering Camp Eagle’s rocky climbs, her story is pure grit and quiet determination. As always, things get candid, funny, and just a little chaotic. The crew swaps stories about storms, hallucinations, and what happens when your headlamp flash convinces you lightning’s about to strike. Madeline talks redemption, recovery, and what it means to represent women in the most rugged corners of ultrarunning—all while proving that sometimes, the loneliest miles lead to the loudest triumphs. | Pushing Limits at Ghost Train Trail Races | 30 Oct 2025 | 01:05:06
Stephanie returns fresh off her 30-hour adventure at the Ghost Train Trail Races in New Hampshire, sharing what it took to push through 115 miles of near-perfect conditions, unexpected challenges, and one of her strongest performances yet. From the mental battle of deciding to go beyond 100 miles to the moment she realized she was on track for the second-fastest female finish in race history, this episode dives deep into what it means to truly test your limits. Andrew and Stephanie catch up on the busy fall race season, updates from the DFW trail running scene, and the many familiar faces lighting up the course around the country. They also talk about the balance between ambition and self-belief, and how saying your goals out loud can transform the way you chase them. To close things out, Regina hops on for a quick life update and some laughs, including talk of upcoming adventures like Girlfriends with Grit and a few too-honest travel stories from Stephanie’s post-race flight home. It’s a mix of celebration, reflection, and classic HappyCast chaos — the perfect reminder that growth comes from going just a little further than you thought you could. | Ultra Gobi and Ultra Unhinged | 23 Oct 2025 | 01:29:18
This week on the HappyCast, we have a special (very) late night episode and a small reunion of sorts that quickly becomes unhinged as we have Aaron Kubala of Speed Project and Moab 240 Pool Boy fame join to talk about his latest undertaking - The Ultra Gobi. Andrew and Aaron sip on some wine all throughout and try to stay on track to talk about this latest undertaking. This is a 400km race through the Gobi Desert in China that traverses the ancient Silk Road. Aaron was able to not only finish, but he ended up running a majority of the race with another 200 mile juggernaut, Jovica Spajic. We hear all about this experience and the formation of a friendship that will last the test of time. | The Mammoth 200 Roundtable: Part 2 | 15 Oct 2025 | 01:33:39
Host Andrew Marvin is joined by guest host Isabella Campos-Janovick for Part 2 of our Mammoth 200 Roundtable, featuring two finishers of the inaugural race: Steve Epifano and Amber Bouge. Together they unpack what it was like to take on 200 miles through unpredictable Sierra weather, endless climbs, and the unique camaraderie that forms when everyone is just trying to make it to the next aid station. Steve shares his perspective as both an athlete and coach—balancing recovery, directing his own trail series, and finding beauty in the chaos of high-altitude racing. Amber reflects on tackling her first 200-miler, jumping straight back into mom life, and the mental highs and lows that come with pushing far beyond familiar distance. From lightning storms and ski-shack shelters to hallucinating wiener dogs and debating the merits of Pop-Tarts, the stories capture everything that makes these multi-day races unforgettable. The group also digs into what made the Mammoth 200’s first year special—the strong community support, the creativity of the race organization, and the moments that will bring runners back again. Whether you’re a seasoned 200-mile veteran or just curious about what happens when the miles blur together, this roundtable delivers equal parts humor, honesty, and heart. | The Mammoth 200 Roundtable: Part 1 | 08 Oct 2025 | 01:26:15
The Happy Endings Trail Crew sits down with five incredible athletes who took on — and conquered — the inaugural Mammoth 200. Hosts Andrew Marvin and Stephanie Stonebraker guide a lively roundtable filled with stories of grit, community, and chaos from this first-year 200-miler in the Eastern Sierras. From wild weather and sleepless nights to Taco Bell recovery runs, this episode captures what it means to survive (and love) a race that pushes every limit imaginable. Guests Rachel Entrekin, Kevin Goldberg, Adam Williams, Carol Northrup, and Christian Peranzi each bring their unique perspective: a first-time 200-miler’s awe, a husband-and-wife anniversary on the course, and the relentless drive of those chasing finish lines across the country. Together, they paint a vivid picture of a race that somehow felt both brand new and perfectly dialed in — complete with espresso machines at aid stations, lightning storms at the summit, and friendships forged in fatigue. It’s an honest, funny, and down-to-earth look at what really happens over 200 miles — the good, the bad, and the weird in between. The group swaps stories about what kept them moving, what broke them down, and what moments made it all worth it. No hype, no filters — just runners talking about why we keep showing up to do the hard things, even when it makes no sense. | Adventures at Wild Goose Trail Festival with Andrew Bondarev and Fra Balbi | 01 Oct 2025 | 01:01:59
Stephanie takes us to New Jersey for her 22nd state on the journey to all 50 with the Wild Goose Trail Festival 100-miler. What could have been a solo grind turned into a full-on adventure of community, resilience, and unexpected friendships. With her original pacer getting injured, Stephanie found last-minute support in Andrew Bondarev, who drove in to help keep her on track through the long night. Along the way, she also met Fra Balbi, a non-binary runner taking on their first 100K, after chasing them down to take a picture of their sign that read “Trans People Belong Everywhere.” That one moment of connection turned into miles of conversation, shared finish-line celebrations, and a reminder of how powerful representation on the trails can be. This week on HappyCast, Stephanie sits down with returning guest Andrea Moore—fresh off an unbelievable streak of six 200-milers this year alone, including the Arizona Monster, Cocodona, Oregon 200, and the grueling Summit 200 in Colorado. Joined by guest host Rachel Moore, the conversation dives into the infamous “MonsterDona” combo, what recovery really looks like between back-to-back ultras, and the unique challenges of pushing through brain fog, altitude, and steep climbs. Andrea opens up about the emotional rollercoaster of Oregon 200, where wildfires forced the race to stop at mile 151, reminding everyone of how unpredictable and humbling trail running can be. She also breaks down the relentless terrain of Summit 200—rocky climbs, 60% grades, and life at 13,000 feet—and what it taught her about fear, resilience, and mental strength. With wisdom like “motion is lotion” and “more fun than run,” Andrea proves why she’s one of the most inspiring figures in the ultra community. Rachel, preparing for her very first 200 at Mammoth, brings fresh questions and reflections, while Stephanie highlights the power of women in ultrarunning and the lessons these races carry into everyday life. | Finding Strength in the Storm with Liesl Standish and Julie Benoit | 17 Sep 2025 | 00:59:01
This week on the HappyCast, Stephanie sits down with returning guest Liesl Standish and her pacer, Julie Benoit, to dive into Liesl’s unforgettable journey at the Run Rabbit Run 100. From the moment the weather turned to rain, hail, and near-freezing temps, this race tested every ounce of grit and determination. Liesl shares what it felt like to shuffle through the night wrapped in a space blanket, the toll of soaked gloves and cold hands, and how sheer perseverance pushed her forward when quitting seemed like the only option. Julie offers the unique perspective of both a first-time pacer and volunteer at one of the most chaotic aid stations, where even elite runners dropped due to the brutal conditions. She describes the surreal beauty of fog-filled valleys at midnight, the mental shift of supporting someone else’s race, and how pacing revealed lessons she’ll carry into her own running journey. Their stories highlight the raw reality of ultrarunning: it’s not just about speed, but about resilience, adaptability, and the power of showing up when things get tough. Beyond the race details, the conversation dives into community, motherhood, and what it means to set big goals while balancing real life. From hallucinations of “men in the woods” to the comfort of ramen at a freezing aid station, this episode captures the highs, lows, and lasting impact of Run Rabbit Run. Whether you’re chasing your first ultra, dreaming of a hundred miler, or simply inspired by stories of resilience, Liesl and Julie remind us that finishing is often the greatest victory of all. In this episode, Andrew and Stephanie catch up with one of HappyCast’s very first guests to hear how Rob has spent his time away, why he chose to step back, and what ultimately pulled him back into the trail running scene. From his early days building Trail Racing Over Texas (TROT) to the ideas now fueling Rise Racing, Rob reflects on the lessons learned and the community he never stopped loving. | Roadside Grit: Vol State, Heart of the South, and Beyond with Lisa Decker and Shashi Reddy | 03 Sep 2025 | 01:20:41
Sometimes the hardest part of ultrarunning isn’t the miles—it’s just getting an episode recorded. After multiple attempts, the HappyCast crew finally sits down with Lisa Decker and Shashi Reddy to share their stories from two of Laz Lake’s infamous journey races: Vol State and Heart of the South. Both are 300+ mile tests of grit, resourcefulness, and pure stubbornness, and their experiences run the gamut from roadside naps to navigating storms and heat rash with Dollar General t-shirts. Lisa takes us through the camaraderie of her “trauma bonded trash panda” crew at Vol State, while Shashi details the unpredictable game of Heart of the South—where runners don’t even know the starting line until the night before. Between road angels, the legendary “meat wagon” driver who refuses to let you quit, and the strange joys of eating soggy Subway sandwiches mid-race, the stories capture the feral, unpredictable beauty of these journey runs. Since those finishes, Lisa and Shashi haven’t slowed down. Lisa went straight into the brutal heat of the Habanero 100, earning her first sub-30 finish, while Shashi found his way back to the trails at the 6-0 Ranch 50K. With both eyeing even bigger challenges ahead, this conversation is equal parts hilarious, inspiring, and a testament to what happens when runners embrace the chaos of the road. | The Copper Kings 100 Recap: Grit, Grace, and a Little Too Much Cheese | 09 Jul 2025 | 01:46:19
In this special fourth appearance, Wes Plate returns to HappyCast with a full breakdown of the inaugural Copper Kings 100—Montana’s newest hundred-mile race and his most ambitious project yet. With co-hosts Stephanie and Andrew, Wes opens up about what it took to bring this dream to life: from months of preparation and a jam-packed U-Haul to navigating stormy skies, deadfall-filled trails, and the high-stakes logistics of a remote mountain race. Spoiler: not even a lightning storm during the race briefing could shake this crew. Stephanie recaps her experience captaining the Our Lady of the Rockies aid station—a mountaintop post where she and a team of volunteers (including both her and Wes’s moms) kept runners alive with mashed potatoes, heated bathrooms, and the occasional mid-hallucination pep talk. Between walking every runner up the hill, managing drop bags and puke blankets, and making sure no one missed the cutoff, this became a spiritual checkpoint for runners and crew alike. With 90 finishers out of 105 starters and only one DNS, the Copper Kings 100 defied all expectations for a first-year race. Wes reflects on what went right, what he learned, and how much this community has grown around a course that winds through solitude, scenery, and suffering. Whether you’re an aspiring race director, a trail runner dreaming of Montana, or just here for stories about flamingo costumes and blowing up propane heaters, this episode is packed with heart, hustle, and humor. | Trail Therapy and Tantrums in the Rockies | 02 Jul 2025 | 01:29:04
In this hilariously unfiltered and surprisingly heartfelt episode, Stephanie recaps her post-Cruel Jewel adventure at the Great Divide 100 in Colorado with guests Ben Bridgeman and Liesl Standish. After a last-minute pivot to avoid altitude overload, Stephanie takes us through her thought process behind picking this particular race just three weeks after finishing one of the most brutal 100-milers in the Southeast. With loops at a “mild” 9,200–9,800 ft elevation and a deceptively runnable course, she thought this would be a safer bet. Spoiler: it wasn’t. Liesl and Ben—now proud Coloradans—served as her pacers and emotional lifelines as the race devolved from high hopes to high-altitude hell. The episode dives into the emotional rollercoaster that comes with racing at elevation while undertrained and over-beered, the importance of having the right people by your side, and the unique energy of grassroots trail races. There’s discussion on course markings, shade-hopping strategies, and the shock of how 65 degrees in Colorado sun hits different than in Texas. But it’s not all suffering and sunscreen. Between the shade breaks, trail hallucinations, and one hilariously defiant mantra—let’s just say it wasn’t about “having balls”—this episode is packed with raw trail wisdom, post-race reflection, and the kind of unfiltered fun you can only have when you’re running on fumes and friendship. | Ladies Sweep Achilles Hill with Alisa Hardy, Jaclyn Lovelady and Lisa Decker | 25 Jun 2025 | 01:20:34
In this special women-led episode of HappyCast, Stephanie teams up with guest co-host Ben Bridgeman to spotlight the incredible performances at this year’s Achilles Hill ultra event. The spotlight shines brightly on Jaclyn Lovelady, Alisa Hardy, and Lisa Decker—three powerhouse women who not only swept the competition but redefined what grit and community mean on the trail. From setting new course records to creating new divisions (hello, ruck champion!), the ladies brought fierce determination and even fiercer support for one another throughout the 48-hour endurance fest. Jaclyn claimed the coveted Last Person Standing title with 108 miles completed in 26 loops, outlasting a competitive field with steady pacing and mental toughness. Meanwhile, Alisa crushed the Miles Champion category with a record-breaking 130 miles, channeling doubts into fuel and proving once again that women belong at the top of the leaderboard. And Lisa? She went beast mode—completing a 100-mile effort while hauling a 20–25 lb ruck, outlasting most of the field and closing out the race with community-powered momentum and a smile. Beyond the numbers, this episode captures the heart of Achilles Hill: a tight-knit, fiercely supportive trail family where everyone roots for your win. From popsicle breaks to last-minute pacer gigs and pond-diving dogs to mushroom-fueled mayhem, the stories shared are as heartfelt as they are hilarious. This week on HappyCast, the spotlight is on cohost Stephanie, who just completed one of the Southeast’s most brutal ultramarathons: the Cruel Jewel 100. Alongside fellow runners Drew Flowers and Mike Coutu, the trio takes us deep into the Georgia mountains and even deeper into the pain cave, reliving the highs, lows, and everything in between. With 105 punishing miles and over 33,000 feet of climbing, this race tested not only their legs but their sanity. Stephanie finished in an impressive 41 hours and 25 minutes, and Drew and Mike crossed the line together at 44:18—and yes, she lets them know who finished first. From forgotten trekking poles to mid-race trail therapy sessions, the stories fly fast in this post-race debrief. Stephanie talks about running on stair machines and spite, Drew recounts pulling a hamstring in a kids’ street race, and Mike details what it’s like to deal with Crohn’s while trying not to DNF. | The Active (Average) Joe with Libby Jones | 14 May 2025 | 01:28:16
In this deeply heartfelt and eye-opening episode of HappyCast, hosts Stephanie, Dylan and Andrew are joined by trail race director and community powerhouse Libby Jones, the force behind The Active Joe and the beloved Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run. From her accidental start in race directing to founding one of North Texas’s most inclusive and community-focused race organizations, Libby shares how a love for running, a knack for logistics, and a fierce sense of purpose shaped her journey. She recounts the wild origin story of Dino Valley (spoiler: snakes, floods, and disputed land all make appearances), and reflects on how much heart and hustle it takes to bring a race to life. Libby dives into the values that guide her work—radical inclusion, adaptive support, and putting community over profit. From Spanish-language runner manuals and pacer support for older athletes to creating safe spaces for LGBTQ and nonbinary runners, her approach is as intentional as it is inspiring. The episode doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff either: the group discusses uncomfortable truths about safety in the trail running world, the importance of speaking up, and how gossiping, in the right context, can indeed save lives. | Beyond the Distance: Mental Health, Dogs, and the Long Run | 07 May 2025 | 01:36:33
In this unforgettable episode of the HappyCast, hosts Andrew, Dylan, and Stephanie welcome Canadian ultrarunner and mental health advocate Evan Birch, along with his trail-blazing running partner: his seven-year-old Vizsla, Nova. Together, Evan and Nova recently attempted the Orcas Island 100, marking what may be one of the first sanctioned 100-mile ultramarathon efforts by a human-canine team. Their story—captured in the upcoming documentary Supernova: The 100-Mile Dog—goes far beyond finish lines. Evan takes us through the years of preparation that led to this moment, from choosing Nova as a pup specifically for the trails, to learning how to communicate without words, to tailoring training and gear for the unique demands of ultrarunning with a dog. The conversation dives into the bond they’ve built over hundreds of miles and the sheer trust it takes to tackle such a challenge together. Beyond the race, this episode is a powerful reflection on mental health, identity, and resilience. Evan opens up about his background in emergency services, his own struggles, and how trail running—and Nova—became a path toward healing. Raw, thoughtful, and deeply inspiring, this episode is a reminder that sometimes, the journey isn’t just about covering ground—it’s about who we become along the way. | ReCast: 2023 Cocodona 250: From Sedona to Flagstaff | 16 Apr 2025 | 02:17:31
We’re back for week two of our Cocodona 250 rerun series, and things are heating up—figuratively and literally. With Andrew deep into the Arizona Monster 300, we’re throwing it back to the second half of his first Arizona epic. This is where the race gets real: after pushing through Jerome, Andrew faces crumbling shins, emotional lows, water crossings gone wrong, and the infamous climb up Mount Elden. In this episode, we follow him from Cottonwood to Sedona to Flagstaff, as the trail throws every twist it can: gravel roads, technical descents, delusional audio loops in his head (hello Destiny’s Child?), and a contact lens disaster in the middle of the desert. We also meet key players like Rachel, Kenneth, Kirsten, and Regina—each helping (or witnessing) Andrew’s slow unraveling as he pushes to the finish. Stephanie kicks things off and Dylan wraps it up, bringing their usual dose of humor and heart. Stay tuned for stories about teacups on mountaintops, awkward trail naps, and the kind of breakdowns only a 250-mile race can trigger. And don’t worry—we’ll be back in two weeks with the full Arizona Monster recap. Buckle up. | ReCast: 2023 Cocodona 250: From the Bradshaws Down to Jerome | 09 Apr 2025 | 01:56:37
While Andrew is out running 300 miles across Arizona as part of the Arizona Monster 300, we’re giving the HappyCast mics a breather and bringing you a two-part rerun series featuring one of our favorite race recaps: Andrew’s Cocodona 250. Yep, before he faced the Monster, he faced this beast—and we’re revisiting it mile by mile. In Part 1, we follow Andrew through the brutal 37-mile opener, twisted ankles, blown-up quads, surprise water stops, and the kind of “fun” that makes you question all your life choices. It’s raw, ridiculous, and somehow still inspirational—classic HappyCast chaos. We’ll drop Part 2 next week, and then be back with a brand new episode featuring Andrew’s full Arizona Monster recap. And hey—stick around through the end of this one: Stephanie jumps in with an update on Andrew’s current race status and shares her “Can’t Let It Go” of the week. You’re not gonna want to miss it.
