It's so easy to choose a vacation destination just because you saw some pretty photos. Or your coworker highly recommended it. Or your favorite travel podcaster won't stop raving about (oh hey it's me + Scotland).

But sometimes this approach to choosing a destination results in trips that are fine… pleasant… but not truly unforgettable. Here at Wild Hair Travels, I don't want that for you.

On this episode, I'm sharing a simple, practical test to help you figure out whether a destination is truly the right fit for you. Using this approach can help you avoid trips that feel just "okay" and guide you toward destinations that genuinely excite you and leave you with amazing memories.

173: How To Ditch the Default16 Jan 202400:21:32

Ever feel like life and vacations are stuck on autopilot, following a script written by society? Yeah, me too, but I'm kind of over it.

I firmly believe that the key to a happier life and amazing vacations is tossing out the pre-decided life milestones, scripted daily grind, and society's vacation to-do list. Society's one-size-fits-all approach is not the answer – it's time to break away from the default in both life and vacation and customize your experiences.

This episode is here to inspire you to take the reins and design a life and vacation that resonate with you. Let's trade in the mundane for the extraordinary and aim for richer, deeper experiences by ditching the default and living life on your own terms.

152: The Travel Apps Most Used By My Clients08 Aug 202300:28:47

When I first started traveling, I had to lug around a binder with printed confirmations and a handwritten calendar to keep me organized on a trip. And my system worked, but I am definitely happy to replace my cute little binder with some ultra-lightweight phone apps instead.

There are a handful of apps that I consistently recommend to all of my clients - and that I personally use, too - so on this episode, I'm listing out what those are, along with one app I do NOT recommend.

151: The Timeline to Your Next Vacation01 Aug 202300:36:15

Sometimes the excitement leading up to a vacation is almost as good as the trip itself - and I want you to experience that.

But the reality is often that it doesn't hit us that the vacation is coming up until a few weeks before, and then we have to scramble around prepping our jobs, our house, and our family for our absence, while simultaneously shopping, packing, and doing last-minute planning for the trip. Those rushed few weeks before a trip can sometimes make us feel like it's not even worth it to take a vacation.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

I fully believe that with a little bit of planning and forethought into WHEN we are planning our vacation, those weeks before a trip don't have to feel like a sprint.

Vacation planning is one of those things that falls to the bottom of the list when life gets busy. And putting vacation planning into your busy schedule like other career, family, or work to-dos is not something we think about doing, but that's what we are doing in this episode.

I'm helping you come up with the planning timeline for your next vacation, so you know when you need to buckle down, hit certain milestones, and also when you can sit back and get excited.

149: A Heart-to-Heart With Your Vacation Expectations18 Jul 202300:28:16

If you've ever found yourself on a vacation that didn't quite live up to your expectations, you might be tempted to think that the next time around, you should lower your expectations.

After all, "if you have expectations, you are setting yourself up for disappointment" and "if you expect nothing, you are never disappointed", right?

And while those sayings may pass the "logic test", I believe we should have very clear expectations for our vacations (for so many reasons)!

But I also know that sometimes we can take our expectations a little too far.

On this episode, I'm showing you how that beautiful vision you have in your head is so important to having an amazing vacation - and also how to manage that vision so that it isn't the thing to bring down your experience. Tune in as I help you have a heart-to-heart with your brain and your expectations for your next vacation!

148: When (And When NOT) To Compromise on Vacation11 Jul 202300:33:21

I'll be the first to scream from the rooftops that you should NOT compromise at all on your vacation plans, but the reality is that there is a time and place to compromise, especially if we're traveling with other people, have limited vacation time, or a set vacation budget. (Which is most likely the majority of the time.)

Fortunately there is a way to compromise that doesn't make you feel resentful or unfulfilled from your vacation. But there's also a time where you should guard your vacation experience like a lioness and NOT compromise at all.

So how do we strike a balance between getting the vacation that we want without dominating the vacation plans for everyone in the group?

Have a listen to dive into this oh-so-important topic!

146: How Seasonal Planning Could Help With the Overwhelm27 Jun 202300:32:15

I don't know about you, but there are some weeks where I am literally just winging it day-by-day.

And months where I just take it week-by-week.

And then there is the occasional Sunday where I do make the time to sit down and get a handle on my work to-dos, plan out our meals, and start the week with a tidy house - but it's usually a one-off.

But as a busy working mom, I can tell you that none of those approaches have been doing it for me - and my recent experience with my schedule has been total overwhelm.

I have known for a while that something needs to shift, and the answer to the overwhelm has appeared to me in the form of seasonal planning - and I'm going ALL IN.

I've been geeking out over the idea of planning everything from work tasks to dinner to friends' weekends…

And from when I want to have my tea, fit in a workout, and enjoy reading my book.

And the best part about this approach is you pretty much only have to do this 4 times a year.

Even though I'm still in the thick of it, I can't NOT share this with you in case it is the thing you've been missing, too.

Would love to hear from you if you already do some type of seasonal planning, or if you plan to implement this after this episode!

145: How I Accidentally Cured My Airport Anxiety20 Jun 202300:25:39

I've dealt with airport anxiety for YEARS. Until…very recently when I was "accidentally" cured.

I just realized on my most recent vacation that the fears, worries, and fast heart rate that usually accompany me to the airport didn't tag along - and I was oddly very calm and chill, even though we had some annoying delays.

So how the heck did that happen? What was the cure?

I've got the behind-the-scenes scoop for you today on how I went from someone who used to panic when I wasn't the first stop on the parking shuttle - to someone who now knows what it feels like to move through the airport WITHOUT a bunch of mind drama.

This is a story that I hope you'll be able to relate to or learn from if you also suffer from airport anxiety - and if you don't, I hope you get a kick out of it! ;)

144: Some Reasons You Might Want to Package Your Vacation13 Jun 202300:23:31

Vacation Packages. Sound dull, restrictive, and old school?

Especially for my fellow independent travelers - they can be if you aren't careful. There is definitely a right and a wrong way to package a vacation.

And even though us independent travelers (raising my hand here!) are usually more comfortable with booking everything separately - outside of a package - there are some pretty compelling reasons why you might want to consider packaging your next vacation.

Spoiler alert: I packaged my recent vacation to Ecuador and it was the best decision ever, so I'm sharing what made me decide to do that and what I learned.

143: How to Bring Back the WONDER of Travel06 Jun 202300:22:34

One of the things I love about being a mother is seeing the wonder of the world through my son's eyes. Everything is so fresh and new, which means feelings of excitement, curiosity, and fun!

When we are new to traveling abroad, we take with us those fresh and eager eyes, too. But as we travel to more and more places, our sense of awe and wonder starts to fade a bit, just like it does when transitioning from childhood to adulthood.

But traveling the world with a sense of wonder is unlike anything else, and just because we travel more doesn't mean we have to lose those feelings, so I'm sharing with you a list of ideas to bring back the wonder into your travels, even if you've traveled quite a bit.

Your challenge after listening to this episode is to choose 1 or 2 to use during your next vacation!

PSA: I LOVE friends' trips. They're just extra fun.

But we can't approach them the same way that we do for a family trip, because the dynamics of the group are just different.

And while our travel styles play a huge role in our experience, there's also one other big thing we can't forget about, so I'm sharing with you what that is, along with one golden idea that is gonna help you have the best time ever with your friends.

141: Encouragement + Advice | Destinations That Make You a Tad Uncomfortable23 May 202300:25:03

Why would you EVER want to feel uncomfortable on a vacation?

Well, we don't want to feel that way, of course. But sometimes traveling abroad can bring us worry, anxiety, or general discomfort.

And yet we still feel that tug to travel to that off-the-beaten path destination. We still wonder what it's REALLY like to be immersed in that different culture. We still are deep down craving MORE than that comfortable annual beach trip.

If you've been holding back from taking trips because of the discomfort factor, I've got all of the inspiration and practical tips you need today to help you feel better about traveling to that destination that makes you feel just a little uncomfortable. ;)

140: The Magical Number of $3,00016 May 202300:27:56

Q: What's something that allows us to have amazing vacation experiences?

A: Money!

And believe me, I have a TON to say about how our "relationship with money" is the main thing that affects whether or not we live out our traveling dreams (and to what extent).

So there is one magical number in particular that I want to focus on today: $3,000.

It's a pretty special number when it comes to our vacations, and especially if you feel like money is the main thing holding you back from taking those vacations you've been dreaming about for years, it's a number I want to ingrain in your head -- for 2 very different and equally important reasons.

139: The ONE Question to Ask Yourself Today09 May 202300:13:02

So there is this question.

And it's a REALLY good question.

But it's one that especially for us busy professional women or moms, we rarely get asked.

So I'm asking it today. And I'm also giving you space to think about it and honestly answer it for yourself.

But I am answering the question: how do you sell the experience of a vacation to your not-so-adventurous husband who would be cool with just staying at home?

I've had years of practice at doing just that, and realized that I have a solid strategy that's given me a 100% success rate with getting my husband on board with trip after trip.

So if you typically find it hard to get your husband on board with vacations, but you want him to join you on a big vacation and actually enjoy himself, tune in for the 5 steps that will get you exactly that!

262: How to Plan a BIG Trip Years in Advance16 Sep 202500:24:01

There are actually quite a few things you can be doing early on, before you even know when you can make this trip happen. On this episode, I'm sharing what those are and why it's worth sketching out those big trip ideas early, even if they're still a few years away.
