Edwin Bryant, Ph.D | Harvard Bhakti Yoga Conference | Episode 9625 Mar 202501:09:35

Edwin Bryant received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches courses on Hindu philosophy and religion. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, published eight books, and authored a number of articles on the earliest origins of the Vedic culture, yoga philosophy, and the Krishna tradition. As a personal practitioner of bhakti yoga for over 45 years, a number of them spent in India studying with traditional teachers, where he returns yearly, Edwin strives to combine academic scholarship and rigor with appreciation towards traditional knowledge systems. His teaching method is to allow the ancient texts to speak in their own voice and through their own terms and categories. Edwin’s translation of and commentary on the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali is specifically dedicated to contributing to the growing body of literature on yoga by providing insights from the major pre-modern commentaries on the text with a view to grounding the teachings in their traditional context. Edwin’s most recent published work is a sequel to this by the same publisher entitled Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa. This work, too, seeks to ground the practices of bhakti in the traditional Krishna-centered framework of the Vrindavan devotional traditions.

Vrindavanath Das | Harvard Bhakti Yoga Conference | Episode 11108 Apr 202501:01:47

Meet Vrindavanath Das (Shawn Coutu)

Bhakti has been a part of his life since birth.

His family played an integral role in the acquisition and renovation of what is now known as the Bhakti Center in Manhattan’s East Village—a vibrant spiritual hub for seekers.

As a teenager, Vrindavanath formed a personal connection with the Bhagavad-gītā, striving to understand its wisdom and apply it to his life.

During a gap year between high school and college, he travelled to Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, to formally study bhakti texts.

After spending 14 years immersed in the energy of New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, he began to feel the limitations of urban living and decided to return to the heart of bhakti textual study with renewed focus.

Over the past two years, responding to a growing interest in online spiritual study, he began facilitating group readings of bhakti texts, including the Gītā.

His sessions are known for their inclusivity, clarity, and devotion-centered approach.

Now residing full-time at the Govardhan Eco Village, Vrindavanath is immersed in the study of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa alongside a diverse international community of learners.

In this session, he’ll guide us through an overview of the entire Bhagavad Gītā, inviting individuals in the group to take turns reading as we move through the flow and themes of the text—an enriching summary in just about 45 minutes.

Title of Session: Connecting with God: Krishna's Step-by-Step Suggestions (A Thematic Summary of the Bhagavad Gita)

In this lifetime, her medicine is to help beings live radiantly and die gracefully through the practices of Bhakti Yoga, Meditation, Reiki, and End of Life Doula Work. She approaches both life and work with awareness, aliveness, and compassion. To her, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing another being remember and fall in love with their own true nature.

As a Bhakti Yogi, teacher & devotee, an integral aspect of her practice is chanting and leading Kirtan in her community in Burlington, VT. She describes Kirtan as group prayer, and a call out together for divinity to manifest in the heart. Kishori teaches weekly yoga asana classes in Vermont, leads international yoga retreats, and offers free Kirtan’s with her Kirtan Band (Kishori & the Kartels). She also runs her own business in which she offers both group and 1-on-1 programs for deepening your spiritual practice, energetic healing, navigating grief/loss/death, and getting clear on your dharma. Through her teaching, she hopes to share the transformational effects of a practice rooted in Bhakti, divine love and devotion. As an End of Life Doula, she supports those who are actively dying, those who are supporting someone who is preparing for death, and those who desire to prepare for their own death (which is coming for all of us, at a time unknown to us). She works with people who are looking for support around their grief, and moving through and managing loss. In addition to being an End of Life Doula, she offers support to those grieving the loss of a loved one, losses of jobs, relationships, and sense of identity/self.

He has travelled in Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia, performing both as a solo artist and with his sacred music ensembles “The Hanumen” and “Juggernauts.”

Gaura Vani is also a co-founder of Chant4Change, a mantra-music festival held in Washington, D.C., on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He lives in suburban D.C. with his wife, three kids, and a ferret.
