Ep 16 Mysteries of Human Suffering Pt 108 Nov 202200:44:48

Nevertheless, there is always hope and healing possible in every experience of suffering. Like death and the afterlife, suffering has an element of mystery that cannot be neatly analyzed and categorized. Experiences and responses to suffering in the human experience vary and are as unique as the people who suffer, namely all of humanity. Ep 14 Day of the Dead25 Oct 202200:45:29

Today Colby and Becky welcome two West Texas women who celebrate the rich traditions of Dia de Los Muertos, a celebration of All Souls day in the Mexican tradition that has become well known and practiced throughout the world.  Death as a common experience of all humanity has the capacity to connect us in a way not many other common experiences do. There are various ways of responding to and embracing this reality. Dia de los Muertos is a rich Mexican tradition rooted in the hope of eternal life.  It is a day set aside to honor the dead and to celebrate the unique and unrepeatable person who has lived and died. It is a tradition that lightens the load of death and expresses joy in the face of morality in a unique way.

Ep 11 A Discussion for the Ages Pt. 104 Oct 202200:50:39

Exclusive:  How would you like to hear St. John Paul II in a conversation with Margaret Sanger?  This week we are honored to be the first media outlet to publicly share Dr. Sarah Denny's amazing work showcasing what dialogue might look like between these historical figures.  Denny, an ethics Professor at Loyola University in New Orleans,  uses writings from St. John Paul II and Sanger to dialogue like they were having a coffee shop discussion about freedom, health, contraception and sex education.  Denny's purpose of this work is to show we can still make room for civil discussion even when we are on polar opposite sides of an important issue.  JPII was a master at the art of dialogue and building genuine relationships with a person of opposing views.  He did this by seeking the common ground of human understanding, appealing to the echo of original experiences that resonate in every human heart and experience.

Ep 10 Complement or Competition27 Sep 202200:41:51

How can 2 parties in real relationship obtain a lasting peace between each other?  In episode 10 Brian Butler, founder and director of Echo Community (formerly Dumb Ox Ministries), joins Colby and Becki to unpack how peace can come from understanding how our gifts and talents can be complementary to one another and not a reason to compete against each other.  Listen in as our group shares personal examples of how this endeavor can be messy but extremely rewarding when done with honesty and humility.

Ep 9 Total Vision Event20 Sep 202200:41:45

Ep 8 Heart of the matter13 Sep 202200:40:53

In episode 8 we discuss a common experience we all have as humans, the interior life.  The interior life is in the Handbook for Humanity because it is the dwelling-place where "YOU" are, your heart.  Not the fleshy pump inside your chest but the hidden center of you as a person that is beyond the grasp of reason and of others.  Join Adele, Becki & Colby as they break open why the matter of the heart, as St. John Paul II puts it, is what makes each of us unique and unrepeatable. Our hosts also share how having a hard heart can negatively shape your interior life but having a softer more flexible heart can open immeasurable possibilities.

Ep 7 Human Experience06 Sep 202200:36:58

Why do we do what we do? John Paul II as a philosopher and theologian, threaded a phenomenological approach through his writings and dialogue, appealing to a close and repetitive observation of our human experience as a means of understanding the Truth about who we are and why we exist. In today's episode Colby, Adele & Becki discuss how human experience (Someone's Phenomenology) can shed light on why we exist the way we do.  Our Experiences shape who we are and if we are aware of this we can set a good direction for our life.  Experiences are important because they shape our attitudes and perceptions, attitudes and perceptions shape expectations and expectations shape behaviors.

Ep 6 Guest Episode: Artist/Teacher striving to be a better human 30 Aug 202200:29:25

In this week's episode we bring on our first guest to Handbook for Humanity, Austin Matherne. Austin is an artist and high school teacher based in south Louisiana. Listen as Colby and Becki ask Austin to paint several word pictures describing how his career, faith and life have been impacted by our recently discussed topics of Solitude, Shame and Gift of Self.

Quote mentioned by Becki proposing an invitation to wonder at God's apparent quality of being unwearied by repetition and restarting in creation:

"Grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony, but perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. God may say every morning 'Do it again" to the sun, and every evening, Do it again' to the moon. It may not be an automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike, it may be that God makes every daisy separately but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy: for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we." -G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

Ep 4 Gift of Self16 Aug 202200:37:09

The pinnacle of our existence and how we experience this world stems from our relationships, how we relate to others. Relationships can, and in most cases feel complicated but today we hope to shed light on something special. The human person is created and called to make a gift of self to others.  This is the third in a series of topics as we covered solitude and isolation in our first part. Next we went into the feeling of shame that looked at the positive and negative aspects of that often misunderstood feeling. Today we we'll discuss the next foundational topic to understand humanity better.  If you would like to support Handbook for Humanity please visit https://desormeauxfoundation.org/ , click on the "Funds" tab and select Theology of the Body.  Thank you!
