"This can’t be right!"

Every gym owner has heard this at least once from clients who check their BMI and see they’re labeled as "overweight." This isn’t only true for occasional gym-goers but also for those who consistently work out, lift weights, and eat right.

It’s clear that BMI is just a number that doesn’t tell the whole story. And it makes us wonder if there’s a better way to measure health.

Yes, there is!

In this episode, Tim and Randy sit down with Bradley Davie from InBody, who explains why accurate body composition analysis is so important for your gym.

Bradley started out teaching physical education before moving to California to work at Lifetime Fitness. His experience with InBody devices inspired him to build a career in sales, marketing, and public speaking with the company.

InBody’s technology goes beyond the outdated BMI and gives you a complete picture of your health. It measures everything from muscle mass to visceral fat, providing the insights you need to personalize your fitness journey.

In this interview, Bradley shares details about InBody devices and discusses the potential shift from BMI to the more precise Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI).

It might sound like a cliché, but you really don’t want to miss this episode.

6 Week Challenge - The Rise & Fall (Part 2)25 Jul 202400:30:06

Many owners think that 6-week challenges are the secret to boosting their gym's revenue and membership.

This challenge is a fitness promotion where participants pay a fee to commit to hitting a weight loss target in six weeks. If they stick to the diet and exercise plan and achieve their goal, they get their money back. If not, they must decide whether to continue at a cost or leave the program.

As you see, it's all about getting results fast. It means that these challenges promise quick cash and a flood of new clients. It might sound like the perfect solution for financial issues.

But what seems like a quick fix could easily turn into a business nightmare because these short-term gains come at a high cost.

You'll spend more time and money on marketing and sales, trying to keep up with the constant turnover. Also, these challenges often attract the wrong type of clients who leave after the challenge, either due to unmet goals or after achieving their short-term objectives.

On the other hand, running these challenges can strain your gym systems, overburden staff, and disrupt your gym's culture. And let's not forget the ethical dilemma – these challenges mostly promote a quick fix that isn't the long-term solution your clients need.

At the end of the day, the challenges can damage your gym's reputation.

Tim tested this controversial model back in 2016 and discussed the results and 6-week challenges with Randy in an episode almost five years ago. This week, they're revisiting the topic.

Have their views shifted since then? Tune in to find out!

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • Revisiting the 6-week challenge topic (00:40)
  • Explaining the 6-week free challenge model (02:45)
  • Initial pros of the challenge (05:06)
  • Cons and long-term issues (07:36)
  • Testing the challenge model - personal story (10:23)
  • Clash of cultures in the gym (17:36)
  • Economic inefficiency and unsustainable growth (19:36)

Are Your Coaches Putting You At Risk?14 Sep 202300:24:44

Imagine inheriting or buying a gym and being thrown into the deep end without the experience of years of challenges and growth in the fitness industry. This is the case with some young gym owners Tim recently spoke with.

Those young men stepped into a gym model that, on the surface, seems efficient but has some lurking pitfalls. It is a personal training gym, which also functions as a big box. They offer a variety of training formats, from one-on-one sessions to team training and semi-private setups.

With seven or eight coaches mostly focusing on one-on-one training, they have fallen into a structure where each coach has a unique roster of clients. These aren't clients the coaches brought with them; the gym assigned these clients as they sold memberships.

Now, you might ask, "What's the problem with that?"

Well, there are numerous reasons why this model could be putting gym owners at risk. And yes, some of these pitfalls have already manifested for these young entrepreneurs.

But it's not all doom and gloom. The three-hour coaching call Tim had with these owners wasn't just about pointing out problems. They discussed challenges and crafted a comprehensive action plan and a clear roadmap for the future.

With Tim's guidance, these gym owners are on a path that promises their business model will be transformed in just eight weeks, placing the control firmly back in the hands of the gym owners.

So, are you a gym owner wondering if your current model might be putting your business at risk? Or are you simply curious about the potential pitfalls in the world of fitness entrepreneurship?

Tune in for this episode as Tim and Randy highlight all the risks your coaches might expose you to and how to navigate away from such positions.

Are Lockdowns Coming Back?12 Sep 202300:25:46

According to the news, COVID's making a comeback, and it feels like we're getting ready for another dance-off with it.

Thinking back to the first round of COVID, a lot of the stuff they told us to do just didn't pan out the way they said it would - masks, vaccines, closing up shops… but then places like Walmart kept going like nothing happened.

That seemed quite unfair, especially for the gym owners. And it's pretty clear that people in power like telling us what to do. So, how are you going to handle it this time?

That’s the very topic of this episode - to raise awareness. It feels even more important now than the first time to get ready for whatever comes next. And it seems that this time, a lot of people aren’t keen on following the same old playbook.

Here’s the thing: How you see COVID and how it impacts your day-to-day, especially if you run a place like a gym, is deeply rooted in your beliefs.

Of course, nobody wants people sick, hurt, or passing. But at the end of the day, the data from everything that we went through in the first round completely contradicts everything that they forced upon us.

So, this is your opportunity to decide what side of the coin you're going to be on.

Join Tim and Randy as they offer their perspective on what they, as gym owners, are going to do in the case of new lockdowns.

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • COVID cases rise - here we go again… (01:28)
  • Now we know better (02:37)

How to Optimize Your Gym’s Weak Points and Boost Conversion Rates05 Sep 202300:25:06

In today's episode, Tim and Randy dive into an often-overlooked aspect of gym management that can make or break your business: optimizing the lead-to-member journey.

Think of this journey as a chain, where each link represents a step in the process of converting a potential gym-goer into a full-fledged member. One weak link can halt the entire conversion process, leading gym owners to mistakenly scrap entire marketing campaigns.

Essentially, that's throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Why does this happen?

Each step in your conversion process - from lead acquisition and booking an appointment to member sign-up - has its own conversion percentage. If you're not tracking these percentages, you're flying blind.

So what's the solution?

Optimization.

Instead of scrapping a generally well-functioning system due to one problematic area, focus on refining that weak link. A minor tweak could be all you need to massively improve your overall conversion rates.

Even if you're not a marketing whiz, understanding your business metrics and knowing which aspects affect your conversion percentages is essential. It's not just about knowing where you're going wrong; it's also about knowing where you can go right.

Tune in for this episode and let Tim and Randy show you how to pinpoint your weak link and transform it into a potential game-changer for your gym.

Let's dive in!

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • One weak link in the lead-to-member journey can break it all (01:33)
  • Laying out the conversion system left to right (04:03)
  • What works in theory doesn’t always work in reality (08:11)
  • Optimizing your lead-to-member conversion system (10:02)
  • Why most gym owners are good converters (14:48)
  • Adding a call to your lead-to-member conversion system - yes or no? (17:04)
  • You have to have enough data to be able to interpret that data (21:31)
  • Recap (24:19)

Two Types of Clients31 Aug 202300:12:54

Ever found yourself puzzled, wondering why an event you were sure would be a hit ended up flopping? Tim went through this, and it led to a key insight about his gym's clientele.

For Memorial Day, Tim and Zach planned a "Legacy Olympics," featuring rowing, Versa climber challenges, and strength tests. They anticipated that at least 50 of their 200 members would join in, even going as far as to make custom shirts.

However, they got only 15 sign-ups for this cost-free event, leading them to cancel the whole thing. In contrast, they had no trouble attracting 100 attendees for a Thanksgiving event just five years ago.

So what changed?

Well, the failure of the Memorial Day event wasn't really a flop; it was more of an eye-opener. Over the years, the gym has transitioned from focusing on large group boot camps to primarily offering semi-private training sessions.

This shift doesn't just affect the workouts; it also changes the social dynamics among members.

In this episode, Tim and Randy delve into the differences between clients who prefer semi-private training versus large-group sessions, explaining why it's crucial to understand your clientele for improved service.

Keep in mind: it's not always about what you're offering; sometimes, it's about who you're offering it to.

Tune in now!

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • Why Tim’s Memorial Day event failed (01:23)
  • Group mentality vs. individual mentality (05:29)

SOP - The Boring Thing You Need to Do29 Aug 202300:17:31

The topic of this episode is something most gym owners try to avoid - standard operating procedures.

Yeah, SOPs might seem as thrilling as watching paint dry, but once they are set up correctly, they’re pure magic. Here’s why…

Instead of viewing SOPs as a boring chore, think of them as a golden ticket to escape your everyday grind, especially when every moment of your day feels packed.

To step away from the grind, you need to train others to do what you do. And for that? You need an SOP, a detailed playbook that encapsulates the essence of your business.

But the beauty of SOPs isn't just the immediate relief they offer. They can transform your business into a genuine, sellable asset, not just knowledge trapped in your mind.

Because potential buyers aren't interested in what you know; they want replicable processes that you’ve documented.

Even if selling isn't your goal, SOPs allow you the luxury of enjoying your business's success without being anchored to your desk.

Yes, SOPs can seem tough and tedious, but the benefits are crystal clear.

Tune in to this episode, where Tim and Randy discuss how gym owners can effectively use SOPs.

Let’s dive in!

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • One of the most boring topics any gym owner tries to avoid (01:21)
  • 3 key steps of a good SOP (04:11)
  • Discussing pricing on the phone - yes or no? (09:53)
  • The importance of documenting your process (12:26)

Don't 'Just Do It’24 Aug 202300:10:46

Nike is opening a network of training studios in California. They're introducing two studio concepts: Nike Training Studios (NTS) and Nike Running Studios (NRS).

NTS will focus on metabolic conditioning-style functional training, while NRS will offer running classes. (It means that one type of studio will feature treadmills, and the other will be equipped with sandbags, kettlebells, and similar equipment.)

All these offerings come at a low price of $99 a month for unlimited workouts. This move shows that Nike, a giant corporation with vast backing and a massive marketing budget, is stepping into the fray.

They might shake things up, especially in places like West Hollywood or Newport Beach in California. If you operate a large group training studio, it might seem they're aiming for your clientele.

However, for those running a semi-private training studio with a distinct concept, there's no cause for alarm. Among the gyms we collaborate with that focus on semi-private training, this development is a non-issue.

Why?

Tune in to find out because, in this episode, Tim and Randy explore whether Nike is genuinely diving deeper into the boutique fitness studio market or if there's a different marketing strategy at play.

Let’s find out!

Key Takeaways:

  • Nike needs to be smarter than this (04:18)

7 Steps To Switch To Semi-Private Training22 Aug 202300:25:05

The shift to semi-private training is a topic that consistently grabs the attention of gym owners. Once you're mentally on board with the idea, the next big question is, ‘How to make the switch?’

Firstly, it's important to clarify what semi-private training entails and how it differs from other services gym owners might consider offering. Semi-private training is a personalized program in a shared cost environment with the coach.

One of its greatest advantages is that it's a simpler and more effective approach than offering a myriad of confusing packages. It also presents fewer risks than, for example, strength training in a large group setting.

There's a common misconception that 'more options' equates to 'better service.' However, overloading with options often brings more challenges than benefits.

In this episode, Tim and Randy point out the benefits of focusing on a few key areas rather than spreading oneself too thin. They also share a clear roadmap consisting of seven steps to transition successfully to a semi-private training model.

Key Takeaways:

  • Intro (00:00)
  • What is semi-private training? (01:17)
  • Step #1 - The logistics of delivering semi-private training - schedule (04:10)
  • Step #2 - The space and equipment (05:23)
  • Step #3 - Coaches (09:50)
  • Step #4 - Programming (11:41)
  • Step #5 - Pricing and sales (14:13)
  • Step #6 - Internal marketing (14:44)
  • Step #7 - External marketing (22:04)

How Employees Make Money17 Aug 202300:24:44

In the fitness industry, the value of a coach or trainer isn't solely determined by their education or certifications.

A common misconception among many trainers is that a formal degree or certification automatically translates into higher compensation.

However, this overlooks a fundamental aspect of business and value creation.

While education and certifications undoubtedly contribute to a trainer's knowledge and skill set, they do not necessarily correlate directly with generating more revenue for the business.

In this episode, Tim and Randy delve into the importance of creating additional value for your fitness business and how you, as a coach, can go above and beyond to justify higher compensation.

Key Takeaways

- Education vs. experience in the fitness industry (00:45)

- Gym business value creation (03:57)

Your Exit Strategy15 Aug 202300:23:03

Starting a gym is often driven by passion and excitement, but as the years go by, it's important to consider the bigger picture, including the eventual exit strategy for your business.

In the journey of gym ownership, there's a significant difference between being self-employed and being a true business owner.

Many gym owners find themselves deeply involved in the daily operations of their gym, handling everything from training and sales to marketing and administration.

This hands-on approach may initially seem necessary, but it can hinder the growth and potential for the business to become an asset that can be sold.

In this episode, Tim and Randy delve into the critical aspects of transitioning from a self-employed gym owner to a true business owner, creating a valuable asset that can be sold or transitioned smoothly.

They explore the significance of systems and processes in making your gym business more attractive to potential buyers.

Key Takeaways

- Self-employed vs business owner (01:05)

- Built to sell (05:26)

Are Your Partnerships Symbiotic?23 Jul 202400:13:57

Ever thought partnering with a chiropractor or physical therapist would bring a flood of new clients to your gym? Many gym owners have hoped for that. But reality has a different story to tell.

Partnering with external services often falls short of expectations, especially when it comes to bringing in new clients. So, instead of counting on those referrals, a smarter move for gym owners might be to develop in-house services that integrate seamlessly with their current offerings.

For instance, adding stretch therapy to gym services perfectly meets clients' needs. It also gives gym owners complete control over the service quality and delivery, while also making great use of the gym space.

Plus, stretch therapy is a perfect complement to personal training. In fact, it has already gone mainstream because of the real benefits it offers.

The Only Two Numbers That Matter10 Aug 202300:16:51

In the competitive fitness industry, success hinges on data-driven decision-making. With countless factors to consider, it can be overwhelming to determine which key performance indicators (KPIs) truly reflect the health and growth of your fitness business.

However, amidst the sea of metrics, two stand out as paramount: Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) and Delta.

In a world of data overload, simplicity wins. While numerous KPIs might seem tempting to analyze, focusing on ROAS and Delta will offer you comprehensive insights into the health and trajectory of your fitness business.

By boiling down various metrics into these two crucial numbers, you gain clarity and can make informed decisions without getting lost in complexity.

Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) is the compass guiding the success of your advertising efforts. It provides a clear picture of how effectively your marketing budget translates into revenue.

Delta is the metric that captures the essence of this growth or decay in recurring revenue. It considers new sales, cancellations, upgrades, downgrades, and freezes in your monthly recurring revenue.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about these key metrics and how to use them to grow your business.

Key Takeaways

- Simplicity wins (00:27)

- Return on Adspend (1:39)

- Why cost per lead is irrelevant (02:36)

- What is the Delta metric? (07:12)

- Focus on memberships and recurring revenue (10:20)

As a gym owner, there comes a point where you realize that raising rates is an essential step to ensure your business's profitability and sustainability.

However, the prospect of increasing prices can be daunting, especially when dealing with long-time members who have enjoyed old and discounted rates.

One of the strategies to mitigate the fear and uncertainty of raising rates is using hard data to guide this decision.

In this episode, Tim and Randy explore several strategies for implementing rate increases in a fair and effective manner, ultimately helping you achieve a stronger and more prosperous fitness business.

Changing Your Business to Fit Your Employees01 Aug 202300:22:41

As a gym owner, one of the most critical decisions you'll make is choosing the right business model. It sets the foundation for your gym's growth, culture, and success.

However, over time, you might face team development and lead generation challenges, leading some gym owners to consider altering their business model to accommodate employees or marketing agencies.

As a business owner, you have a unique vision for your business. It is crucial to remain steadfast in your beliefs and goals. Nobody should dictate your gym's fundamental structure or direction.

An excellent example is the recent buzz about gyms adopting a pay-as-you-go model instead of traditional memberships and recurring revenue agreements to appease their coaches.

In this episode, Tim and Randy discuss why gym owners should resist the temptation to change their business model solely to appease employees or marketing agencies and instead focus on effective leadership and finding the right fit for their team.

Key Takeaways

- The pay-as-you-go model (03:21)

- You fall to the level of your systems (07:15)

- Team development and leadership (09:53)

Transitioning to a semi-private training model can be a game-changer for gym owners.

The Man in The Mirror13 Jul 202300:36:59

In the world of fitness business, taking action and implementing effective strategies is essential for long-term success.

In this episode, Randy and Zack shed light on the critical need for gym owners to embrace change, prioritize business systems, and challenge their own habits to achieve sustainable growth.

Drawing parallels between gym owners and their clients, they emphasize the importance of urgency and application of knowledge.

They compare gym owners' tendencies to clients seeking instant results through fad diets or fitness gimmicks.

While gym owners may be enticed by quick cash flow and short-term gains, Randy and Zach encourage them to adopt a more holistic approach.

Just as clients need to commit to long-term lifestyle changes for sustained fitness, gym owners must prioritize implementing systems that lead to long-term success.

Randy draws attention to the "diet starts on Monday" mentality, where clients postpone their health and fitness goals until a later date. Similarly, gym owners often delay implementing necessary changes in their businesses, hindering their progress.

Laser Focused Growth11 Jul 202300:30:09

The recent explosion of use cases for AI has got everybody thinking and talking. In the fitness industry, there is the possible use of AI and biometrics to revolutionize how we market and attract customers.

The idea is that AI can analyze biometric data from sources like camera phones, microphones, and smartwatches to determine people's responses to social media posts or advertisements.

Currently, this technology is being used by organizations such as the CIA and NSA used for identifying potential threats, such as potential terrorists.

However, in the future, businesses may be able to leverage this technology to segment leads based on their favorable or negative responses to specific content.

This means businesses can identify leads who are highly interested, those who are gathering more information, and those who are not quality leads.

It's worth noting that elements of this personalized marketing already exist.

For instance, Google has been using algorithms and analytics to understand our buying habits and preferences for years. Facebook ads also leverage user profiles and buying choices to display relevant content.

But the potential future of AI-driven biometric analysis takes this personalization to a whole new level, almost like reading minds.

Often, gyms are desperate for any leads and focus on servicing them later. However, the power lies in assessing and attracting clients who align with your values as a business. Even without mind-reading technology, we have the ability today to focus on our avatar clients and deliver a personalized experience today.

Tune in to learn more!

Key Takeaways

- Segmenting leads using AI (01:15)

- Knowing your avatar client (07:53)

- Identifying your avatar clients’ interests (09:27)

- You have to know who you are serving (12:54)

- Every lead costs you, even those that aren’t a good fit (16:23)

Recovering from Front-Loaded Sales06 Jul 202300:19:57

In the fitness industry, it's easy to get caught up in the allure of quick money and flashy trends.

Some gyms and fitness businesses resort to high-ticket sales or front-end offers to compensate for lower monthly memberships.

While this might seem like a solution in the short term, it often leads to a constant scramble for new sales. Gyms have become sales-centric rather than client-centric, neglecting the delivery of services to existing clients. This approach can create a cycle of continuously chasing new sales without building a sustainable client base.

Prioritizing business fundamentals and focusing on recurring revenue will lead to long-term success and stability.

Consistency in revenue growth, where monthly recurring revenue exceeds base operating expenses, provides stability and peace of mind while ensuring that your business has a solid foundation and isn't constantly reliant on generating new sales to stay afloat.

In this episode, Tim and Randy discuss the pitfalls of relying on high ticket sales and challenges and highlight the benefits of building a systematic, sustainable fitness business.

Key Takeaways

- The problem with front-end offers (01:39)

- Systematically training clients at a higher ticket price (06:05)

- Building a reliable and sustainable gym business (08:07)

Data Drives Hard Decisions18 Jul 202400:20:09

Faced with a tough choice in your business? Data could be the key to making the right call.

A few years back, the gym here was deeply attached to the large group training model. It was a fun and exciting place with lots of enthusiastic people. But there was a problem. Even though people liked the gym, many didn't stay for long, and the gym's income wasn't steady.

An analysis of client retention data was the only way to figure out a solution.

What he found was eye-opening. Higher-paying, semi-private clients were staying three times longer than group training clients. With the data providing clarity, it was time to decide to move to the semi-private training model. Even though some people didn't like it, it was the best decision for the business.

That's just one example of how data can help gym owners make the hard decisions.

In this episode, Tim and Randy explore how data can inform and guide decision-making, even in the most challenging situations.

Urgency and Success04 Jul 202300:11:47

If there is one key factor that often differentiates those who achieve their goals from those who fall short, it has to be urgency.

Urgency fuels action, propelling individuals to make things happen and seize opportunities.

Without urgency, even the greatest ideas can wither away, leaving unrealized potential in their wake.

Urgency plays a pivotal role in entrepreneurship, acting as a catalyst for success. While talent and skills are undoubtedly essential, without urgency, they can stagnate and remain untapped.

Aspiring gym owners, for example, must embrace urgency to propel their businesses forward.

Those who embrace urgency and consistently take action are more likely to overcome obstacles, achieve their goals, and realize their potential.

In this episode, Tim and Randy delve into the significance of urgency in personal and entrepreneurial success and highlight how embracing urgency can be a game-changer in various aspects of life.

Key Takeaways

- Urgency - The X factor of success (01:51)

The Transactional Client29 Jun 202300:12:25

There are different types of fitness clients with unique motivations and expectations.

One particular type is the transactional client.

These individuals approach their interactions with fitness businesses from a convenience-oriented perspective, valuing ease of use over long-term commitment. They are more likely to view fitness as a service that fits into their lifestyle rather than an integral part of their routine.

Transactional clients typically have limited emotional attachment to the business or service they engage with.

Effectively managing transactional clients requires a different approach compared to other types of clients.

In this episode, Tim and Randy aim to shed light on the transactional client, explore their characteristics, and provide insights on how to effectively engage with them to retain their business.

Adjusting Your Thermostat22 Jun 202300:18:07

In today's episode, Tim and Randy discuss the concept of an internal thermostat and its relation to personal beliefs and success.

Everyone has an internal thermostat set to what they believe they deserve or what's possible in their business.

Just like an air conditioner thermostat in a room kicks on and cools back a room back down to the set temperature, people may experience temporary success or improvement in their lives but eventually return to their old habits and comfort zones because their internal thermostat is set to a certain level.

Most gym owners have their internal thermostats set too low. They don't believe they can achieve greater success in their business.

The first step to overcoming such limiting beliefs is surrounding yourself with people who elevate your belief system, mindset, and possibilities.

Feel like you need a new thermostat?

Tune in to this episode for real-life examples of what's possible in your gym business!

Whether it's due to unmet expectations, a misalignment of goals, or simply not being the right fit for each other, handling client breakups with tact and integrity is crucial.

High Ticket15 Jun 202300:26:21

The concept of high-ticket offers has gained significant attention, not only within the fitness industry but across various sectors.

Many gym owners ponder whether it makes more sense to sell high-ticket products or services to supplement their regular monthly subscriptions.

The prospect of generating a large income quickly can be enticing for many gym owners, especially when they need an immediate influx of funds to cover expenses or stay afloat.

The allure lies in the promise of significant revenue that high-ticket offers can bring, potentially transforming the financial outlook of a business in a short time frame. It is not uncommon for some businesses to achieve remarkable success, generating tens of thousands of dollars in a single month through high-ticket sales.

However, Tim and Randy have observed a trend that gym owners often seek high-ticket solutions as a means to compensate for the shortcomings of their core business model.

At its core, a sustainable gym business relies on recurring revenue exceeding its base operating expenses.

Instead of constantly scrambling for new marketing strategies, challenges, and quick cash injections, a business should focus on building a strong foundation of recurring revenue.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about the place of high ticket offers in your gym business and if/when to run them.

Key Takeaways

- The rise of high ticket offers (02:02)

- Are you using high ticket offers to compensate for shortcomings? (03:56)

- Gym business big advantage (06:09)

- Are you charging enough? (07:57)

Short Game Vs. Long Game13 Jun 202300:20:19

Operating a gym business can be challenging, especially when cash flow becomes an issue. Many gym owners find themselves in a bind, facing financial gaps that require quick decisions.

When gym owners find themselves in a tight financial spot, the pressure to make up the shortfall can be immense. Desperate to meet payroll or cover expenses, they resort to creative but short-term solutions.

These solutions can include hastily selling paid-in-full memberships, creating overnight challenges, or launching nutrition programs to generate immediate revenue.

While these strategies may help in the short term, they often create larger problems and hinder long-term business sustainability.

A key aspect of avoiding desperate decisions is implementing forecasting and focusing on monthly recurring revenue (MRR). Gym owners need to plan ahead and ensure that their MRR consistently exceeds their operating expenses.

In this episode, Tim and Randy address the importance of foresight, disciplined actions, and focusing on sustainable growth to avoid falling into the cycle of desperate decision-making.

Key Takeaways

- Avoiding cash flow emergencies (03:14)

- Forecasting ahead in your business (04:30)

What's Next06 Jun 202300:15:40

As a gym owner, you must have seriously thought about what lies ahead in the next years of your life. Is the gym business the vehicle that will carry you through to retirement, or is it a vehicle to open up other opportunities?

This is a point many gym owners struggle with, especially when they are no longer having to put out fires constantly. When the systems are dialed in and things aren't too tough.

A few years ago, Tim found himself at a crossroads, wondering what's next.

The gym was doing well, providing a good lifestyle, but deep down, he knew there was more to explore.

He looked around the industry, searching for groups of gym owners who were playing at a higher level and were asking the same questions. To his surprise, such a group didn't exist, and he knew he had to create one.

That's how the Iron Circle was born back in 2019.

The Iron Circle is a community of high achievers, gym owners who are hungry for more, who constantly ask themselves, "What's next?"

They've reached a level where their gyms are running smoothly, and they've started exploring new avenues—expanding their fitness empire, venturing into other businesses, making investments, and more.

The possibilities are endless.

Orangetheory Steps Away From HIIT30 May 202300:14:08

In the competitive fitness business landscape, standing out from the crowd is essential for success. One powerful tool that can set you apart from the competition is a unique mechanism.

A unique mechanism is a distinct aspect of your business that sets you apart and offers a competitive advantage. It involves creating proprietary elements or using specific nomenclature to differentiate yourself from others in the market.

The primary purpose of a unique mechanism is to position your business strategically. It serves as the driving force behind your clients' results when engaging with your products or services.

When Orangetheory burst onto the fitness scene, they introduced the concept of the "orange zone," a proprietary system that targeted fat-burning and optimized workout efficiency. This marketing strategy won them many clients.

But a recent ad may suggest they are trying a different approach.

In this episode, Tim and Randy delve into the concept of a unique mechanism and explore how a well-crafted strategy can elevate your business and captivate your target audience.

It's a topic that often sparks debates and raises questions about what is fair and sustainable for both the business and its employees.

Stop Lying to Yourself16 May 202300:14:16

In this episode, Tim and Randy discuss a concerning trend they have observed among many gym owners. So many people want the easy way out when it comes to running their business

This is based on Tim's post on the Business Talk with Fitness Professional Facebook Group offering a ChatGPT script that would generate 50 clients a month with just 14 minutes of work per week and the overwhelming response it received.

Many gym owners wanted the script to copy and paste into their marketing plays for quick success.

This is even more ironic, given that, as gym owners and coaches, we often advise our clients against similar shortcuts regarding their fitness goals.

Your business is no different. There are no magic bullets or secret potions that can instantly lead to success in the fitness industry. Like success in fitness itself, success in the fitness industry requires hard work, consistency, and dedication to the right principles.

Tune in to this episode for a reality check on what it takes to succeed as a gym owner and what to focus on.

Key Takeaways

- ChatGPT script to bring in clients? (02:06)

- There's no shortcut to success in the fitness industry (04:55)

- Copy and paste tactics won't grow your business (08:01)

- Protect your reputation as a gym owner (11:45)

Dating Your Clients11 May 202300:20:56

In the fitness industry, trial offers are a popular marketing strategy to attract and retain new clients.

As a gym owner, it's important to understand the different types of trials and front-end offers you can use to attract new members.

Trials are essentially trial memberships for a shorter period of time, but it should be the same delivery system a regular member would receive. Front-end offers, or challenges are not the same as trials, as these are standalone programs with different delivery systems.

In this episode, Tim and Randy explore 4 different types of trial offers and their pros and cons.

The first type is the free trial, a common marketing strategy many gyms use. This type of trial can bring in many people, but the major con is that there is no skin in the game for the potential clients, which can lead to them not taking the trial seriously or not being committed to becoming long-term members.

Tune in to learn more about the other type of trials and which one we recommend for your gym!

Key Takeaways

- What is a trial membership (02:31)

- Trials vs. challenges (02:50)

- The free trial (04:12)

- The paid upfront converted at the back trial (05:46)

To achieve the desired results for our clients, we need to support them with nutrition coaching and accountability.
