Guantánamo Bay: Then and Now – Details, episodes & analysis

In partnership with the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at Oxford University, Human Rights charity Reprieve is sharing a 3 part series on the lasting impact of the “war on terror”.

• Episode 1:Eric Lewis, President of the Reprieve US Board, takes us back to the beginning of Guantánamo, presenting how it normalised torture in America and providing an advocate’s view of the fight to free the 780 men imprisoned without charge.
• Episode 2: Helen Duffy, Professor of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Leiden University, highlights how the issue of Guantánamo remains current and urgent, sharing the story of Abu Zubaydah, who has been detained in the prison for 24 years.
• Episode 3: Reprieve’s Chief Executive, Maya Foa, explores the legacy of Guantánamo, looking at how Europe has replicated unlawful detention without trial through the holding of thousands of men, women and children, many of them UK or EU nationals, in North East Syria.
