3 Amazing Tips to Build an Accounting Firm Brand That Stands Out
23 Sep 2021
00:28:08
When I was younger, people said I was too creative to be an accountant, and too organised to be a creative. Turns out the combination of those two skills is exactly why I was able to create The Profitable Firm (PF): a creative agency working exclusively and only with accountants.
I qualified as a Certified Public Accountant in the States, and worked as an auditor for the State of Arizona before coming to the UK in 2001. When I moved here, I got a job as an auditor at a local accountancy firm in Scotland, but very quickly got moved to business development and setting up a consultancy division for that firm. I then moved on to managing the European office of a global network of accounting firms, and following that set up PF. (For five years I also ran a successful international wedding photography business alongside the creative agency.)
I now focus my energies on helping inspire and educate accountants on the power of content marketing, which PF uses itself to show accountants by example how this is done.
I love training, teaching, and coaching. I'm always honoured when asked to speak to accountants - and although I like big groups well enough, I prefer the smaller, more focused groups where I can get to know people as individuals, and help them with what's troubling them in marketing. I have presented on a large scale and small scale for organisations including Xero, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW), the UK200 Group, BKR International, AccountingWeb, Accountex, and Thriveal CPA Network.
PF is based "everywhere", with a core team working from the UK, South Africa, and the United States delivering outsourced marketing to accountancy firms all over the globe.
I keep my creativity alive with photography, sketchnoting, and writing. I'm now a dual British-American citizen, and (after much travel) I confirm that Scotland is the most beautiful country in the world. I drink copious amounts of black coffee.

**In an attempt to keep my LinkedIn contact relevant, if you send an invite to connect with me, please include a note as to how we are connected. No offense, but random recruiters, financial managers and coaches won't make the cut if we haven't met. THANKS!**
My personal mission is to help CPAs and small businesses to leverage technology for their success.
Once a practicing CPA I discovered a passion for technology. After years of churning out tax returns and completing audits I discovered my Hedgehog (see Jim Collin's, Good to Great) and decided to marry my passions for the accounting industry and technology.
I am honored to be recognized as an industry leader on technology topics impacting CPA's. This allows me the opportunity to be a speaker at industry conferences around the country. I embrace these opportunities to educate CPA's on a wide variety of technology topics such as, cloud computing, Microsoft updates and many other topics.
During my journey I have made a number of exciting stops. Notably, as a member of the Maryland Association of CPA's Board of Directors and ultimately Chairman of the Board. I have also participated at a variety of levels with the American Institute of CPA's including currently on the PCPS Executive Committee. I am a regular presenter for state and national conferences, discussing technology and leadership topics for CPAs.

Inside the Journey to Accounting Firm CEO
12 Aug 2021
00:32:23
I am the CEO of Peisner Johnson, a state and local tax accounting firm that's been around since 1992. I started with the firm as a staff assistant 25 years ago and has worked my way up to CEO. Currently, the firm has 25 employees and serves sellers in the United States and Canada.
Since law changes in 2018, state and local taxes have become more complicated so Peisner Johnson has really stepped up to serve their clients as best as possible. The executive team, led by me as the CEO, has implemented new strategies to grow our relationships with our clients. "What's Next" calls and value-based pricing are just two of the ways we've improved our customer (and employee) experience.
Throughout my career, I learned that growing in your positions means being good at managing your work and managing people, you have to be good at both.

I help you cut through the noise so the right customers reach out to work with you.
✅ Capture attention ✅ Build trust as the expert in your industry ✅ Grow revenue
It's hard to stand out and trying to cut through all the noise is overwhelming. It doesn't need to be this way.
I spent 12 years building a tech company with 2.6 million in annual revenue―one of Inc. Magazine's fastest growing companies.
After selling that company―I looked back and realized I could have done it faster. So I got clear on what actually captures attention and gets the right people to take action. I started helping clients get results and now I'm fulfilling a new mission to help entrepreneurs like you accelerate growth.
That's where my thought leadership and video marketing program comes in:
➡️ Develop a marketing strategy designed to fit your unique DNA
― Develop a pillar video concept (e.g. podcasting, live shows, workshops) ― Design your marketing engine around 2-3 hours/week of your time ― Identify the ideal places to publish your content LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, etc
➡️ Map out a content repurposing workflow. Take long-form video and create…
― Audio to send to podcasting platforms (iTunes, Google, Spotify…) ― Short video clips for social media (30 seconds - 1 minute) ― Images and quotes for social media ―Written pieces such as blogs for SEO
➡️ Create engaging and shareable video content that makes people say "Wow!"
― Select, purchase and set up equipment and lighting. Build an "always ready" system. ― Articulate your ideas, present yourself as the expert while looking your best on video ― Overcoming fear or imposter syndrome
➡️ Optimize your social presence, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, etc...
― Optimize profiles and banner images ― Deploy best practices, settings, titles, and descriptions ― Know how to grow your audience rapidly, get views and engagement
I'm also a practitioner who walks the walk―I run a weekly podcast and live streaming show and repurpose content across the internet. I regularly book 10-20 incoming sales calls/week
Get where you want to go―faster:
I'll show you step-by-step how to put the marketing pieces together and avoid the pain of trial and error so you can focus on your business.
― I recently helped a client more than double in size in just over 12 months ― Another grew by $2 million to $9 in the past year ― Someone I'm working with landed 2 new clients in 7 days

I joined Acuity to translate accounting for entrepreneurs. I do that by helping navigate tax and accounting rules and speaking entrepreneur, not accountant, but now most people just want to chat me up about cryptocurrency and blockchain. I run the sales and marketing teams at Acuity where we are trying to see how many entrepreneurs we can help get a handle on their finances.

3 Disruptive Business Models for Accounting Firms
01 Jul 2021
00:29:21
Hey there. I'm Ryan.
I'm a CPA, but please don't call me an accountant! I much prefer innovative technologies and disruptive business models rather than numbers.
In 2013, I started a 100% online accounting firm called Xen Accounting. A first of its kind in Canada, it was totally virtual, focused on automation and was comprised of a remote team of geeky CPA's, bookkeepers and technologists.
After 5 short years, Xen Accounting was acquired by a large European corporate services firm, thanks to the tech-oriented, scalable model in place.
I started Future Firm in 2018 to help accountants fast-track the growth of a modern, scalable firm of their own.
And in 2021 I launched, Future Firm Accelerate, an online coaching program that includes a combination of online courses, online coaching and an awesome community of forward-thinking firm leaders from around the globe to help them get to their desired destination faster.
Unrelated to business, I'm addicted to Crossfit, love traveling to remote destinations and was previously an active club DJ in Montreal.

He is also the creator of Accounting Practice Academy, an online course that is transforming accountants on how they run their practice.
After graduating from the University of South Carolina's prestigious Darla Moore School of Business, Brannon entered the accounting world with international giants Ernst & Young and Elliott, Davis & Company. The Greenwood, SC native, quickly realized his entrepreneur spirit and, in 1995, became a partner in a plumbing distribution business. Brannon started brokering accounting firms in 2003 with a vision to build the best possible accounting brokerage firm in North America and opened the doors of Poe Group Advisors shortly thereafter. Honing in on its unique and seamless way to pair buyers and sellers, Poe Group Advisors wasted no time going from start-up to an internationally sought-after brand.

What is The Largo Group? In musical terms Largo means methodical. The vision for our company is to offer a methodical approach to accounting and tax services so that the business owner has the key information they need in real time.
The Largo Group was founded by Anne Gannon, CPA in 2016. Anne has 15+ years experience and began her career as a CPA with a big-five accounting firm in Boston, MA where she quickly realized the only winner in the 'busy season' approach was the accounting firm.
As the daughter of a life-long entrepreneur, Anne knew her dream was to make a difference in the accounting world. Anne started her quest to be different from scratch while at home with two small children and also teaching accounting at the collegiate level. To say those days were interesting would be an understatement!
Working as an Instructor of Accounting teaching upper-level accounting and finance courses at Florida Atlantic University and Eastern Florida State College reinforced the fact that most business owners have never been given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of accounting. And yet, in order to be successful, all business owners need to know accounting fundamentals.
While teaching during the day, Anne began to experiment with how finances could be better explained to business owners. Starting with a handful of small business clients, she began to develop The Largo Group Signature Monthly report, and experimented with the key information these business owners needed to be successful.
The Core Principles of The Largo Group Vision:
Flat fee approach Financial Analysis Included Above-and-beyond customer service Education and Guidance In the last five years the Largo Group has continued to provide this innovative approach to businesses across the U.S.
Eventhough our team has grown, Anne continues to push The Largo Group to provide the highest level of service and build long-term relationships with our clients.
The Largo Group is truly The Evolution of Monthly Accounting, and we look forward to working with you on your accounting needs.

For 25 years, she toiled in major accounting firms and also a decade in the local sector. But, her destiny was CEO of her own accounting firm and she needed to make it happen. "It's a scary leap," she says and you can't blame her.
Casting out to the unknown shouldn't be taken lightly. For two years she thought about making the jump. At her local firm, it was a 'cushy job' with benefits and a near 6-figure salary. She loved her colleagues, her clients, the work, her pay. All she was missing the sweet taste of entrepreneurship.
Finally, in September 2017, she started her own firm. Before she left, she had 6 months of savings set aside. So, even if she didn't make a dime for 180 days, she'd be okay. Because after 4 months she would know if it would work. If it didn't, she had two months to try and find a new job.
On top of that, she saved $12,000 for office supplies, software, a computer, basically everything she'd need for an office space. Her first few months were nerve-wracking. But, once she covered her mortgage and bills, she settled in.
By her one year anniversary, she had done $70,000 in profit and paid herself a salary of $35,000 (giving her revenues over 6-figures). Her 5-year goal was to have profits of $150,000 with up to $60,000 in salary. However, due to some new clients, she may hit that by the end of her second year!
The growth is impeccable and here's how she organized her services.

Too Good to be True...20k Followers on TikTok for Tax Advice?

"Don't want to pay taxes? Easy. Just stop making money."
This used to be my response to people complaining about taxes. Way, way back in the day before I knew the real real about how to leverage the Tax Code to build wealth and reduce your tax burden "at the same damn time".
Now, I know better. Now I know that the Tax Code has opportunities for tax reduction strategies all "up through there".
Now don't get me wrong - the easiest way to cut your tax bill is to stop making money. No money, no taxes. But there's a much better way to still make money and reduce (not eliminate) your tax burden.
After 12 tax seasons preparing income tax returns for everybody from low-income individuals to multi-billion dollar corporations, I've decided to switch gears and focus on teaching small business owners how to proactively reduce their tax burden with comprehensive tax planning.
As a Certified Tax Coach, I now help people keep more of their hard earned profits in their pockets and out of Uncle Sam's hands using the same legitimate, proven tax strategies that "the big guys" use in their businesses.
I do this by curating high-impact environments to learn, contribute and be held accountable to taking the actions that you say matter.
Communities I impact:
- Thought Leaders who still call themselves coaches, consultants, authors, speakers and facilitators. - Bookkeepers that want to get free from the job they own. - Business owners that want to become free and have the business they dreamed of from the beginning.
Three Reasons Management is Hard

In 20+ years working with people who run growing companies, I've documented how leaders' roles need to change to meet the demands of a larger organization. This involves Leadership skills, Management techniques and Organizational structure.
CEO Boot Camp is a process to analyze about 35 different systems inside a company taking into account the maturity level of each system, it's score against best practices, and ranking them based on whether they help or hinder the goals of the owners or investors.
For Companies and Divisions: I bring the CEO Boot Camp on-site with a program adapted to your goals, stage of growth, and specific situation. I get input from employees then develop a customized approach based on your company objectives.
For Industry Groups and Conferences: I bring a modified version of the CEO Boot Camp to your event as a keynote, break-out, half or all day session. The audience leaves with a greater understanding of the CEO function and a specific, personalized action plan to apply as soon as they leave the session.
For Economic Development Agencies, Co-Working, Accelerators & Incubators: I bring a group workshop that meets every two weeks for four hours. In 5 sessions over 8 weeks, we cover most of the key systems growing companies need help with. We use case studies and examples from the group to move the companies forward. These workshops are best when the group is at a similar stage of growth: -Bootstrapped -Start-up -Scale up –Exit/Succession

How to Add CFO Services to Your Accounting Firm
04 Mar 2021
00:35:18
Summit CPA Group was founded with the goal of helping small businesses make proactive decisions. Our focus has been primarily on digital agencies. Unlike many CPA firms, our Virtual CFO program focuses primarily on the future, not in the past. What is our cash position looking like in two, three, and four months from now? What does our cash look like next week? How much of a cash reserve do we really need? What should our profit margin be and how do we get there? Do we have too much staff or not enough? Which customers or product lines are generating the most profit? These are just some of the questions we help the business owner answer. Our dedicated Virtual CFOs along with a team of accountants work with the business owners weekly to generate a game plan and then work hand in hand with the company to achieve victory. Give us a call at (260) 497-9761 or email me directly at jody@summitcpa.net to see if Summit CPA Group would be a good fit for you and your company.

How to Manage a 10 Person Firm Without Burning Out
05 Nov 2020
00:26:29
I help right-brained business owners get at-a-glance financial clarity without spreadsheets using the Profit First cash management system.
If you don't understand your finances, things can go very wrong. You might miss out on opportunities because you aren't sure you can afford them, you might overpay or underpay your taxes, or you might just plain run out of money before you even notice a problem.
With our proprietary system, we educate and empower you to understand your bookkeeping reports and your business cash flow to guarantee profitability.
Go back to doing what you love in your business and kick back knowing you've handled the money stuff like the CEO that you are.
Whether you need a bookkeeper, have a bookkeeper, or ARE the bookkeeper - I can help.
WHAT MAKES ME UNIQUE: Unlike many business consultants, I am not a corporate-world escapee. I know how small business works because I am a small business. Together, we will organize your systems so they make sense to YOU, not just your accountant. You will feel empowered by your new understanding of the way it all works, whether you choose to do the work yourself or outsource.
Once you have clean books, we then look at how to turn the numbers to actionable information. Even if you are terrified of numbers or have mountains of debt.
I believe in a collaborative approach. I believe in empowerment, proactive communication, and mutual respect to achieve your goals.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING: "I just did my Profit First allocations for the second month in a row! It is so cool to see the money building up in my tax, profit, operating expenses, and owner's pay bank accounts. Doing the allocations month by month is much less intimidating to me now … I am really loving this!" – Linda Secondari, Creative Director & Principal of Studiolo Secondari
"Ean doesn't mess around with bookkeeping. Like her company name, she's fulla MOXIE. Which is nice, considering that bookkeepers are a dry, papery bunch. Not Ean. She tells it like it is, with humor and creativity." - Matt Levy, Partner at Levy's Unique New York!
"Ean is well-versed in Quickbooks and bookkeeping practices. She is passionate about teaching entrepreneurs and small businesses. Her patience and willingness to share her time and experience have been priceless and I recommend her highly." - Patricia Warner, Executive Coach at Columbia University
