464. The 80% Rule That Changes Everything with Dave Hunter17 Nov 202500:51:25

Dave Hunter started GreenRoom Video after a career in theater, building it from side hustle to a $1.2 million company. Recently discovering he's an integrator (not a visionary) through reading Traction, Dave shares how he's learned to delegate, scale, and break through belief barriers that were limiting his growth. His team now handles projects from start to finish while he focuses on business development and strategy.

Key Takeaways
  • The 80% rule: If someone can do what you're doing at 80% of your ability, they should be doing it to enable growth
  • Belief barriers like "no one can do this as good as me" often limit business growth more than actual constraints
  • Start with contractors before full-time hires to test your management skills and their abilities
  • Learning whether you're a visionary or integrator fundamentally changes how you should approach running your business
About Dave Hunter

463. The Psychology of Premium Pricing with John Bunn10 Nov 202501:00:17

John Bunn recently launched his solo podcast "Shifting Focus" after years of co-hosting How to Film Weddings. Starting with over $400K in student debt, he's built a wedding business that now books $30K+ weddings and has his entire year's expenses covered by the first month. John shares the psychology behind premium pricing, why cash flow equals creative freedom, and how getting specific about your ideal client changes everything about your business.

Key Takeaways
  • When you don't need the money, you come across completely different in sales calls—clients can sense desperation vs. abundance
  • Getting laser-focused on your ideal client (not just any client with money) is what allows you to charge premium rates
  • Cash is oxygen for your business—sometimes picking up part-time work is the smartest move to take pressure off while you build
  • Consistency in the right activities (not just any activities) is what creates long-term success in creative businesses
About John Bunn

John Bunn is a wedding industry educator and mentor who has dedicated his career to elevating professionals through practical, results-driven education. After starting his own wedding video business in 2007, Bunn went on to film and photograph over 550 weddings, gaining deep insights into what truly drives success in the industry.

Since transitioning to education in 2018, Bunn has mentored and worked with tens of thousands of wedding professionals, focusing on what he calls "the things that nobody wants to talk about" — the fundamental business practices that create lasting success beyond fleeting trends.

Bunn's approach is rooted in real-world experience and a belief that sustainable success comes from shifting focus to what actually matters. His passion for teaching stems from the countless success stories he's witnessed, from working mothers who've transitioned to full-time wedding businesses to professionals finally booking their dream clients.

Known for his straightforward, no-nonsense approach, Bunn emphasizes that "trends come, and trends go, but those who shift their focus and put in the work are the true success stories." His mission is to help wedding professionals cut through industry noise and concentrate on the strategies that will genuinely impact their businesses and families.

As both mentor and coach, Bunn brings over 15 years of hands-on wedding industry experience combined with a track record of transforming careers through focused, practical education.

454. The Video Testimonial Strategy That Works 99% of the Time with Ben Albert08 Sep 202500:41:08

Ben Albert, founder of Balbert Marketing and host of Real Business Connections podcast, shares his belief that there's no single key to success - instead, every business has its own unique combination lock. He reveals his nearly 100% effective strategy for getting video testimonials by asking during emotional high moments, and explains how childhood experiences between ages 8-13 often shape the core values that drive our businesses. Ben also shares practical exercises for identifying what makes you "better versus bitter" and how to shift your time and energy accordingly.

Key Takeaways
  • Success is a unique combination, not a universal key - Every business has different skills, clients, locations, and team members, requiring their own specific combination of strategies and approaches
  • Ask for testimonials during emotional highs - The best time to request video testimonials is when clients are already feeling positive and engaged, not during random outreach
  • Use the Better vs. Bitter exercise - Draw a line on paper and list what makes you better versus what makes you bitter, then systematically shift time from the bitter column to the better column
  • Your origin story shapes your business values - The experiences and relationships from ages 8-13 often determine the core values and mission that drive your entrepreneurial journey
About Ben Albert

When Covid hit, Ben was furloughed and feeling lost. He hesitantly opened his MacBook, began reaching out to strangers on LinkedIn, and that one step launched his entrepreneurial journey.

Today, Ben hosts the internationally recognized podcast Real Business Connections, runs the thriving firm Balbert Marketing, and in just over a year, replaced his previous income—all while keeping it real and authentic. Ben has collaborated with industry giants like Chris Do, James Altucher, and Jordan Harbinger.

Through demand from his network, Real Business Connections has expanded to offer podcast production and growth services for top thought leaders. Once an underdog himself, Ben founded GrowGetters ONLY Collective, a community for growth-minded leaders to access mentorship, accountability, and meaningful connections.

He's on a mission to impact one million lives, one conversation at a time.

"When's the best time to ask for a review or a video testimonial? It's during that emotional high." - Ben Albert

"I felt disconnected. So I didn't realize this. I was developing a deep, almost necessity for connection." - Ben Albert

"All you got to do is take something from the bitter column, do a little bit less of that, and then take the same amount of time in the better column and allocate that time to the better column." - Ben Albert

"Each business, each person has their own little combination. So part one, I find, is find someone who's already done what you tried, wanted, want to do, because they've built a playbook." - Ben Albert

347. Consistency and Connection: Video Marketing Insights with Peter Grano21 Aug 202301:01:02

On the show this week I talk with Peter Grano about one of the biggest keys in business - building strong relationships. Sometimes we get so focused on making money that we lose sight of what really matters. The relationships that you build are what will contribute more enjoyment than anything else in your business.

We also talk about some different strategies for effective video marketing for your business and for your clients. It's important to use a style of video that fits your target audience and works in line with your brand. Most importantly, spend time creating quality content and investing heavily into your relationships in your business. This combination will lead to consistent fulfillment and growth in your business.

Key Takeaways
  • The road to success is long and takes steadfast consistency.
  • Investing in relationships will make your work more meaningful and enjoyable. At the end of the day people and relationships are what matter more than work and money.
  • Use a consistent and intentional social media presence to build trust and authority.
About Peter Grano

Having spent the last 5 years as the lead video producer at Business Builders, a small but mighty marketing agency in sunny St. Augustine, FL, Peter Grano has developed his skills as a DP, Director and Editor to better serve the clients that the agency serves day in and day out. With a huge appetite (in more ways than one) for excellence and a unique eye for lighting, Peter believes that people are everything in this business. Through intentional relationships and investing in himself through communities like this one, Peter constantly seeks to provide value to others and believes that without intentional friendships, you're not going to last, much less get to produce the kind of work that you've always wanted to.

Stumbling into the world of Studio Sherpas has been one of the greatest blessings in his life and he considers himself lucky to be talking to the very handsome and skilled cinematographer, Ryan Koral.

346. The Power of Clear Positioning: Lessons from Robby Fowler14 Aug 202300:44:23

On the show today I have a wonderful conversation with Robby Fowler about just how important it is to get crystal clear on who you serve and what problems you solve for them. This will help you turn a blanket brand strategy that connects with no one into a clear and compelling call that will show your target audience that you know and understand them. By getting clear on who you serve, what problem you solve, and how you can accomplish this for them; you will be able to pull in more leads, build trust, and convert those leads into sales that are supported by a healthy and genuine relationship. It's time to clear things up and move forward into greater success for your business!

Key Takeaways
  • Find a common denominator that links your target clients.
  • Use the 3 P's of Positioning to communicate with clarity who you serve and how you help them.
  • When marketing, lead with the problem that you solve for your client.
  • Use the ABCs of business to diagnose the health of your business and identify what is holding you back.
About Robby Fowler

Robby Fowler is a branding and marketing strategist who helps high-integrity consultants, coaches, and trainers build, brand, and market personal brands that make more (than) money.

Robby believes too many personal brand businesses are trapped on a treadmill of activity because they're not crystal clear on what specific business they want to build. While every personal brand wants more money, Robby helps them get there by building a business worth giving their lives to.

343. Embracing Human-Centered Communication: Insights from Ethan Beute on Personal Connections in a Digital World24 Jul 202300:46:16

In the digital landscape that we live and do business in, the human-centered connection has been stripped away from many of our relationships. On today's show I talk with Ethan Beute about how to overcome this hurdle and excel in all of your relationships through embracing human-centered communication. We focus on one of the simplest and most effective ways to break down this digital isolation - video messaging. Sending video messages allows you to interact with others like no other form of digital communication. By leaning into human vulnerability and accessing all of the forms of verbal and verbal communication, video messages communicate your message and leave no room for misinterpretation. They also make the viewer feel heard and understood. All of these aspects combined with a genuine care for your clients will build healthy, long-lasting relationships that evolve into the backbone of your entire business!

Key Takeaways
  • Digital communication strips the humanity from our business relationships
  • Use video messaging to build genuine connection and make your clients feel valued

452. Why Your To-Do List Is Sabotaging Your Success with Michael King25 Aug 202500:43:27

Executive coach Michael King breaks down why being talented at your craft doesn't automatically make you good at running a business. He shares his framework for moving from reactive daily tasks to intentional vision-building, emphasizing that most creatives are thinking way too small about what they're building. Michael challenges listeners to create a "to-be list" focused on identity and impact rather than just grinding through endless to-dos.

Key Takeaways
  • Talent vs. Leadership are different skills - You can be amazing at video production but terrible at running a video business, and both require intentional development
  • Start with identity, then vision, then structure - Before diving into tactics, get clear on who you are, what you want to build, and who you need on your team
  • Create bandwidth for future thinking - You have to intentionally make time to work ON your business, not just IN it, even when you're swamped with client work
  • Embrace being "good and different" - Stop comparing yourself to others and own what makes you uniquely valuable in the marketplace
About Michael King

Michael King is not just a coach — he's a builder of people, companies, and creative movements. With over a decade of executive insight, creative thinking, and relentless execution, King has launched full-scale leadership systems and founded anti-agencies that prioritize genuine service over industry norms.

At the center of King's approach is a fundamental belief that strategy, simplicity, and systems unlock the best in people. This philosophy drives his work across multiple domains: coaching Fortune 500 executives, building platforms for founders, and speaking to teams and leaders around the globe.

King is the creator of innovative frameworks like TEAMS and leads transformative experiences through Accelerator, an immersive strategic coaching experience designed to drive meaningful change. His reputation is built on delivering insight without fluff, transformation without ego, and strategic thinking that helps leaders grow what matters most.

Whether working with C-suite executives or emerging entrepreneurs, King brings the same commitment to practical wisdom and results-driven strategies that have made him a sought-after voice in leadership development and organizational transformation.

Today on the show with Dan Tyre, we talk about how infusing your business with a human centered outlook at every level can help you achieve exponential growth while maintaining healthy relationships. Dan is a rapid growth expert and has many tips from years of developing several massively successful startups.

We talk about some of the most important keys to growth such as niching, effective websites, human centered sales, and the "freemium" business model. This conversation is a much needed reminder to treat each other like humans and do our best to help others. When you strive for this, your business, and the world, will become a much better place!

Key Takeaways
  • The best way to grow in 2023 is to have a very narrow niche.
  • Embrace the "freemium" model by using free stuff to hook potential clients, build trust, and create raving fans.
  • For serious growth, your customers are more important than your sales team.
  • Utilize your website to get a conversation started with potential clients, don't try to sell to them immediately.
About Dan Tyre

Dan is a 14-year-veteran of HubSpot, hired as employee number six. While initially the first salesperson, Dan has since helped expand the sales team through management, recruiting, and training. He is also a frequent contributor to the HubSpot Sales Blog and coined the term "Schmarketing" to describe the necessary alignment between sales and marketing.

Outside of HubSpot, Dan leverages his 42 years of multidisciplinary business experience in sales, marketing, and service to help scale fast-growing companies and coach those that want to harness the power of Inbound Marketing to improve their bottom line. In April 2018, he published a book with Wiley Business Press with Todd Hockenberry called Inbound Organization: How to Build and Strengthen Your Company's Future Using Inbound Principles, and he regularly shares his knowledge through guest appearances on podcasts and as a speaker at worldwide events.

451. Growth Lives Outside Your Comfort Zone (Lessons from a Coach, Author, and Storyteller) with Dan Clouser18 Aug 202500:41:00

Dan Clouser, author and podcast host, shares his journey from running a youth sports organization for 30 years to full-time RV life while hosting "The Journey of My Mother's Son" podcast. He emphasizes that growth only happens outside your comfort zone and reveals how years of coaching taught him that life, like baseball, is a game where you're either winning or learning. Dan discusses the power of authentic storytelling, the importance of listening without judgment, and how genuine conversations reveal that people have far more in common than they realize.

 Key Takeaways
  • Growth requires discomfort - You can only grow outside your comfort zone, whether that's being pushed or making a conscious decision to step into uncomfortable territory
  • You're either winning or learning - Failure is only truly failure if you don't learn something from it; every loss contains a lesson that can prevent future defeats
  • Authentic connection beats perfect branding - Being willing to show your face, share your story, and be vulnerable creates deeper connections than hiding behind logos or polished facades
  • Listen to understand, not to respond - Real conversations happen when you listen to understand someone's perspective rather than just waiting for your turn to speak
About Dan Clouser

Dan Clouser is an author, blogger, podcast host, speaker, and consultant who founded and operated the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club (later the BIG Vision Foundation) for 30 years. The organization ran youth sports teams, tournaments, and a 130-acre sports complex, where he dedicated his career to teaching leadership and life lessons to young people.

In 2019, he and his wife Sandy answered what they felt was a calling to leave their comfort zone and embark on a cross-country RV journey. Inspired by his late mother Loretta Magary—a free spirit who took her own transformative travels in the 1980s—they sold most of their possessions and hit the road with their golden retriever, Youkilis, to continue her legacy of giving back through volunteering and storytelling.

Through speaking engagements, writing, and podcasting, he shares the stories of the "many little people in many little places doing many little things" who are making a difference in the world. His mission is to inspire others to take their own steps toward positive change, honoring the belief that collective small actions can transform the world.

Following Youkilis's passing in April 2024, he and Sandy continue their journey together, documenting the remarkable people they meet along the way.

332. Creating Remarkable Customer Experiences in Corporate Filmmaking: Lessons from Shep Hyken08 May 202300:39:28

The quality of the customer service experience that you provide is equally as important as the quality of the work that you produce. On the show today I talk with customer service expert Shep Hyken about how to create a truly remarkable customer service experience in your business.

Customer service is not simply a department within your business, it's a philosophy that should permeate every step of your customer service journey. Every single interaction between your business and your client speaks to the level at which you care for your client. Be intentional to meet client expectations in all of these interactions to show that you care. This type of customer service will lead to more loyal customers than you would ever imagine!

Key Takeaways
  • The quality of what you produce means nothing if you have no clients to pay for what you produce.
  • Care more about the client rather than making the sale. This will lead to healthy, loyal relationships and also to more closed deals.
  • Become service aware and evaluate every client touchpoint in your business to make sure you are meeting client expectations.
  • Meeting expectations every time will create a truly remarkable experience for your client.
About Shep Hyken

Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert and the Chief Amazement Officer of Shepard Presentations. He is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of eight books and has been inducted into the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement in the speaking profession. 331. Transitioning from Commercial Work to Original Content with Patrick Moreau01 May 202300:43:51

We all want to tell stories that we care about and will influence the world. Patrick Moreau has found a way to do just that with his video business. Muse storytelling has transitioned from producing commercial work to crafting creative original content. Today on the show Patrick and I talk about this journey and what it takes to start telling the stories that you really want to tell.

It takes intentional planning to make this transition and handle everything that comes along with it. We talk about everything from how to choose what stories you should tell to how to find and handle investors.

If you have a story burning within you, maybe it's time to start developing your business to be able to produce this content that you dream about. Buckle down and "do the thing"! The world needs the story that you have to tell.

Key Takeaways
  • Narrow down your scope to do less, yet larger, projects than what you usually handle. This can help you have the bandwidth to really hone in on your creativity.
  • Build trust with your investors and give them a remarkable experience that they can't get anywhere else.
  • Test your ideas for original content to make sure that they are actually good ideas and that will make money.
  • Build a thriving team that can excel in the 5 key areas of a successful film production team.
About Patrick Moreau

Patrick Moreau is an Emmy-Award winning Director and Cinematographer. The focus of Patrick's work is to bridge ways of thinking and being in the world by sharing the experiences of individuals. He believes that there are so many ways to be alive in this world, and through storytelling, we can gift somebody with the experience of another.

All of Patrick's work is built on a foundation of the science of storytelling. He leverages the fundamental principles from academic journals, distills them, and shapes everything he creates within a story framework, which has been tested and proven again and again.

Patrick believes that a cornerstone of creating a world of remarkable stories is to share insights and education with others to tell their own stories. He has built educational courses that have reached over 25,000 filmmakers, taught at the United Nations and educated creatives in over 30 countries.

Patrick is tireless in the pursuit of finding and telling remarkable stories, because he believes they have the power to create a more connected and compassionate world.

[39:50] - Patrick Moreau

"And then also having the humility to know you don't have all the ideas that like being open to, like you said, you know, somebody else has a great idea and not just shutting it." [23:29] - Patrick Moreau

326. Rigging the Game for Your Video Business with Dan Nicholson27 Mar 202300:52:27

What really matters and what do you really want? On today's show Dan Nicholson and I talk about this question and what it means for your business. Too often "more" is equated with "better." However, this is far from true sometimes.

Using concepts from his book, Rigging the Game, like optimization over maximization and closer over more, Dan Nicholson flips some conventional perspectives to help us get to the bottom of what we really want. Once we have a firm grasp on this, we can take control of our lives and actually make decisions that will actively lead us into the life that we truly desire.

Key Takeaways
  • Be intentional to discover what you really want in life. Then build your business to support that.
  • Focus on eliminating downsides to your business more than increasing work.
  • Prioritize optimization over maximization.
  • Work to get close to what you want rather that just doing more.
About Dan Nicholson

A serial entrepreneur since birth, Dan Nicholson took a detour through the "conventional" model of graduating summa cum laude with degrees in accounting and information systems, completing a fellowship at the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, working at Deloitte and various Fortune 500 companies, and being named to the 40 Under 40 list of global accountants four times. One day, Dan woke from his cloud of dissonance, tired of the corporate drudgery of meetings about meetings and future meetings. Now, he takes the conventional and applies it to the non-conventional by helping purpose-driven  entrepreneurs achieve financial certainty.

Dan is the founder of multiple companies across finance, accounting, and software, but  his real passion is teaching entrepreneurs and small business owners. He is the founder  of CertaintyU and creator of a 20-week entrepreneurial education course and certification, Certified Certainty Advisor. The course teaches the concepts, principles  and action steps to becoming an extraordinary leader and reach the top 1% of your  industry. He is also author the USA Today and WSJ Best Seller, Rigging The Game:  How To Achieve Financial Certainty, Navigate Risk and Make Money on Your Terms,  and the host of the popular podcast, Rigging the Game, and lives in Seattle with his wife  and two daughters.

450. The R3 Framework that Changes Everything with Terry Rice11 Aug 202500:48:15

Terry Rice, a former Facebook executive turned keynote speaker and performance coach, shares his powerful transformation story from corporate alcoholic to successful entrepreneur after losing everything. He reveals his R3 framework (Reclaim, Realign, Rebuild) for personal and business transformation while emphasizing the importance of authentic personal branding over perfectionism. Terry demonstrates how being vulnerable about his struggles - including addiction, job loss, and family tragedies - has actually opened doors to bigger opportunities, including speaking at Google and having a documentary made about his life.

Key Takeaways
  • Character branding beats personal branding - Show your real self, including failures and struggles, rather than a polished façade that people can't relate to
  • Own your flaws as fuel - Use your mistakes, challenges, and pain as branding material rather than trying to hide them - it creates deeper connections with your audience
  • Authenticity opens unexpected doors - Being vulnerable about personal struggles can lead to major opportunities, as Terry's experience shows from one LinkedIn comment to a documentary deal
  • Identity-first transformation works - Get crystal clear on who you are and what you represent before focusing on tactics, systems, or external business elements
About Terry Rice

Terry Rice is a keynote speaker, performance coach, and author who helps professionals align who they are with where they're going—then act accordingly.

Known for his bold, story-driven approach, Terry teaches leaders how to live and tell better stories that build trust, drive impact, and unlock exponential growth. Whether on stage or in a coaching session, he blends lived experience with actionable strategies to help high performers shed limiting identities, ignite their vision, and build rituals that deliver lasting results.

Before launching his coaching and speaking business, Terry held consulting roles at Meta and Adobe—giving him a firsthand view into high-performance business environments. His insights have been featured by Good Morning America, Fast Company, and The Wall Street Journal, and he's spoken for top organizations including Amazon, Google, and Berkshire Hathaway.

Terry also teaches entrepreneurship at General Assembly and contributes regularly to Entrepreneur.com.

Based in Brooklyn, he's a proud husband and father of five and a relentless advocate for mental and physical fitness as the foundation of long-term success.

About D.C. (Doug) Joseph

D.C. Joseph is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Serif Creative. They help brands achieve creative greatness.

Over the years, he's become an award-winning, Emmy-nominated filmmaker, a producer of international campaigns, a strategic advisor to C-suite executives, and the Executive Director of the Columbus International Film Festival, the oldest film festival in the U.S.

His journey through entrepreneurship has been anything but easy or ordinary. It encompasses learning the art of storytelling in his grandmother's biker bar to competing in mixed martial arts and international grappling tournaments to filming music videos in Iceland. These collective experiences helped him develop his craft of bringing stories to life through film. As brands began to request his work, he saw how he could impact their broader marketing needs, ultimately setting the foundation for Serif Creative.

Today, his passion is rooted in Serif—community, team building, and establishing a company that can provide for creatives—continue to grow. They motivate his team and him to seek new experiences to sink their teeth into and eagerly raise the bar when it comes to storytelling and creating meaningful connections.
