#090 - Phil Dunster and Movember07 Nov 202301:05:20

You know him as Jamie Tartt, you love him as Phil Dunster. Phil is an actor from Northampton, England, who joins the Group Golf Therapy couch from the city of Bristol, where his drama school alma mater is located. Phil is a new golfer, and uses sport as a means of healthy escape and connecting more deeply with friends. The Shrinks are *jazzed* to follow Phil’s golf journey, and were touched by his willingness to talk about the mental health of it all — particularly, how to find self-worth and identity when you don’t have work to fall back on.

ALSO: This special session of Group Golf Therapy is brought to you by our dear friends at Movember. Throughout the month of November, GGT will be raising funds to support men’s physical and mental access. If able and inclined, donate to our campaign right here: https://us.movember.com/events/view/id/0lw2

#023 - Roger Steele squashes the beef08 Mar 202201:12:12

Roger Steele is one of the most interesting people in golf. Did you know he was an engineer before he became a golf content creator? After founding Hipe Media, Roger has been entertaining us with his Rill Talks on Instagram, and sharing his creative skills with brands like Trap Golf, Five Iron, Callaway, Golf Pride, and now Nike. Roger credits his parents with helping shape him into the person he is today, and also thanks his city, Chicago, for how he views and moves through the world. We know you will enjoy this session with Roger Steele as much as we did. We're also inviting ourselves to his Champions dinner. Because tacos. Hit 'em straight. Mind your golf.

Rick Shiels has a golf content and YouTube empire, made of millions of fans and subscribers. But he took some time to talk to Connor and Bradford about what "me time" looks and feels like to him. The "Monster", as he calls it, referring to golf content social media machine, can sometimes feel like something we MUST do. We caught up with Rick at a time when he realized just how important self-care is to the creative process, and to be the best version of himself FOR himself, for his subscribers and fans, and for his family.

#089 - Ryan Barath is communicating with the past31 Oct 202301:17:02

When Ryan Barath was 13, he saw an interview where Phil Mickelson described a modulation he made to his 60-degree wedge, to make it better fit the golf course he was competing at that week. Ryan’s jaw hit the floor: “you can tinker with golf clubs?!” That immediately inspired a career path as a golf club fitter, builder, and writer focused on the many intricacies of golf equipment. Golf wasn’t always a constant for Ryan, though — one afternoon at his local muni, he decided to walk off the course. Now that he’s back, he’s engaging with the game on a deeper, more spiritual and emotionally vulnerable level.

After a pandemic-induced 18 months travel break, Tom and the band hit the US for a nationwide tour. He caught up with the GGT shrinks from his tour bus in Omaha, Nebraska. #012 Lydia Ko. That's it. That's the title.21 Sep 202100:45:37
The GGT boys were blessed with Lydia Ko's presence on the couch this week. Lydia Ko was ranked world no. 1 at age 17, 9 months, and 9 days - the youngest no. 1 ranked golfer of any gender ever. She is a 2-time Olympic medalist, a 16-time LPGA Tour winner, all at the age of 24. Lydia takes some time from her busy schedule to talk about her mom's cooking, her friends and Tour family, and how her performance coach, Sean Foley, and his musical tastes can be a powerful motivator. She credits her team, Sean, her mental coach, and her family for her success as a professional, and how her professional career doesn't define her. #088 - Pat Corcoran is trusting his higher self24 Oct 202301:04:29

Pat Corcoran shone bright early. As the manager of Chance the Rapper, Pat saw meteoric success in defining the cultural relevance of independent music. Now, Pat reflects on his twenties through the lens of his Higher Self — how his anxiety limited his ability to process his emotions. He has since shifted focus to managing an independent wine label, No Fine Print, and taking to the golf course to find moments of peace.

In this session: reactions, re-parenting the window-front dog, emotional-support nicotine.

The GGT boys were able to record one of their first in-person podcasts at the beautiful The Club at Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc, WI. We sat down in a random conference room after a quick B&E with one of golf's most sought-after creatives, Chrisitan Hafer. While we didn't discuss shutter speed or Hafe's favorite camera setup, we did delve deeper into feelings of imposter syndrome, depression, and celebrating personal victories. #006 - Time Traveling with Sean Hotchkiss10 Aug 202101:26:04
Sean Hotchkiss joins us for this session, and he had a ton to unpack on the show: his journey through self-discovery and acceptance, writing stories as a means of survival, and a therapeutic technique we can all use to play golf with a younger version of ourselves. Sean is a former magazine writer, who now runs a life coaching practice, and the three of us learned so much from how rawly and candidly he carries himself. Like a lot of our guests, Sean hit the pause button on golf for a period in his life, but he's recently picked the clubs back up. #004 Christine Fraser is worthy of the praise29 Jul 202101:11:23

If you've been following us for a bit, you'll know that Christine Fraser is more than just a guest. She's an icon. She's an advocate. She's an ally. She's our favorite golf course architect. Coolest story at the party aside, Christine seeks to make golf courses adaptive, inclusive, inviting, and sustainable for the next 50 years. Because, there's legitimate cause to worry that without those things, golf won't be around in 50 years. We unpack a few things in this session: namely, imposter syndrome, chasing perfection, and how she IS her product. Golf is better place with Christine in it. Period. Do you see the name in the title of this episode? CHRISTINA KIM! Like.. 3-time LPGA Tour Winner Christina Kim! The same Christina Kim who pours her heart and her humor into every single interaction she has. That Christina Kim! She joins Group Golf Therapy this week, and generally keeps it light, but there's so much more to her bubbling under the surface. Liz Breed is $50,000 richer than you because she wins golf tournaments. Like real actual golf tournaments. After a stellar career at the University of Kentucky, and sharing a lunch table with the likes of now-NBA-superstar Anthony Davis, Liz played on both the LPGA and Symmetra Tour level, so she's real good at this stuff. In this episode, Liz shares with us her experiences as an assistant teaching pro at Seawane Golf Club, and how no one should ever take golf tips from a dude with mutton chops. #001 - Dosas and Samosas with Maya Reddy06 Jul 202101:05:44

#01. Maya has been to ComiCon 12 years in a row. She is also a queer South Asian former professional golfer, LGBTQ+ athlete activist, and founder of the Queer Asian Social Club. At Claremont McKenna College, Maya was a three-time NCAA All American, then in 2015 turned professional and played on the Cactus and National Women’s Golf Association Tours and gained status on the Symetra Tour before having to take a step back from the sport due to its exclusive culture and the many harmful bigoted experiences she endured, as a result of that culture – experiences only deepened by the lack of visibility of queer athletes in the sport. However, Maya focused her pain in fighting for and becoming an advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusive policies in sports, working closely with organizations like Athlete Ally. She shares with us her journey with therapy, with PTSD, and how she fell back in love with this game. We think Maya is amazing. We think you will too. #MindYourGolf

#085 - Alex Fourie’s motto: one arm, zero handicap03 Oct 202300:52:39

Bradford, Connor, and Drew met Alex Fourie at the 2023 US Adaptive Open at Pinehurst, and were instantly struck by his attitude, his composure, his outlook. At the age of seven, Alex was adopted from Ukraine and relocated to the US. On day 1 in America, he fished — on day 2, he golfed. Golf became a salve, always there with the sun poking through the trees. Now, along with competing in tournaments around the world, Alex and his foundation, Single Hand Golf, are giving golf to children with adaptive needs and raising funds for orphans in Ukraine.

Visit singlehandgolf.com to join Alex and his team’s mission of getting golf in the lives of children with adaptive needs.

In this session: eating cardinal, EA Sports Tiger Woods, Nike Sasquatch.

#084 - Jain Golf’s Chris Hovsepian took us to camp26 Sep 202301:17:58

You may not have heard his name, you may not have seen his face, but you know his work. A year ago, Chris Hovsepian left his job in the music industry, where he worked with artists whose names and faces you are certainly familiar with. He had a weird idea — weird is good. The mission: create a cartoon world in which an anthropomorphic golf ball, Jain, shows us how golf should be: fun, diverse, interesting. Jain has become a mascot for golf, shelling out pithy, colorful expressions that every golfer can relate to. Chris has big visions for what Jain can become, and the Shrinks hear it all, while learning more about what inspired golf’s new favorite character.

In this session: CAMP JAIN, embodying the suck, Dad.

Kayla Jones is Head Golf Professional at Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta, and is a former competitor on the Epson Tour. Bradford and Drew recently witnessed Kayla’s golf greatness in a match at Bobby Jones, along with our Good Friend, Aaron Chewning, from St. André (view the match on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgsctbTq8B4). Kayla came on the GGT couch to talk about learning the ropes of her new gig as Head Pro, the stresses and successes of playing professional golf, and how therapy played a key role in focusing on Kayla, the person.

In this session: imposter syndrome, support from Dad, woo-woo.

#081 - Michael Block still can't believe it05 Sep 202300:52:22

Michael Block is Head Golf Professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, in Mission Viejo, California. In May, 2023, Michael lit the golf world on fire by finishing tied for 15th at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. It was a storybook week for the 47-year-old: he was surrounded by media, he played his final round with Rory McIlroy, and made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole on Sunday. His PGA Championship success flooded him with PGA Tour sponsor’s exemptions, endorsement deals, private plane rides to events around the world. Despite being three months removed from his historic week, Michael still can't quite wrap his head around what happened, and the subsequent fame he's experienced — that will take time. Naturally, the Shrinks pressed Michael to unpack the quiet moments; what it all feels like when the dust finally settles.

In this session: overnight success, making the hole look bigger, missing a tee time.

#079 - The Shrinks made a golf glove.18 Jul 202301:02:11
If you’ve listened to Group Golf Therapy in the past year, you’ll know that one of our few podcast partners is Red Rooster: they make our favorite golf gloves. They bring one of our favorite Meat & Potatoes segment to you, in Get a Grip. And, ultimately, the team behind the Red Rooster brand are great people. To celebrate one year of podcast marriage, GGT and Red Rooster linked up to create a glove that will act as the safe space for your hand. It’s called The Shrink. And it rules. This session is joined by Red Rooster founders, Kerry and Brad — two Brad’s on one pod. Electric.  Here’s the rub: go to redroostergolf.com/collections/mens/products/ggt and grab a Shrink. Right now. Cock-a-doodle-doo. #078 - Henni Koyack's favorite podcast is Group Golf Therapy11 Jul 202301:21:38

Henni Koyack was a perfectionist. She wrote journals with her goals, her life visions; she practiced exceptional golf etiquette as a promising junior; she observed her peers’ tastes in culture and behavior, and made them her own. After leaving professional golf, Henni joined the broadcast ranks, she became an exclusive media correspondent for Tiger Woods, and she was working high-impact jobs across the golf media space. But “perfect” was corrosive. Now, Henni has built a simple life in England, focused on being a present parent, and showing up professionally in the Sky Sports studio with buoyant energy.

In this session: the inner voice, double-edged swords, finding your “no”.
