117: Jr Sparrow: WV Uncommonplace
29 Oct 2024
00:57:07
Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. We talk about soil, critters - cute and less cute, and his first sustainability venture as a young person cleaning up after race track events (there's a pro race track less than 15 minutes from me). He is a real wealth of knowledge!
Jr has 3 (THREE) podcasts: WV Uncommonplace, WV Uncommonplace Interviews and Sessions, and Sparrows Under Review. There's even a 4th, that he's not sure the name of ( it's WV Uncommonplace Presents), and they're all different - don't ask me how he keeps track of what goes where, because I'm overwhelmed sometimes with just one... He has a job, too-

116: Kenya Rothstein, Environmental Attorney
22 Oct 2024
00:48:31
Kenya Rothstein is the host of the podcast Thank You For Saying NO, about things happen in life that feel impossible and hard, but turn out to be the best thing for us. I've been following her for a little while now, and at some point she messaged me and said something like "your podcast is about sustainability - I need to be a guest!" I wasn't going to say no - definitely not to an attorney...
Kenya is an Environmental Attorney in CA - and soon adding Washington DC! She works for the Plaintiff, and gets to support our oceans and air - how cool is that? She has so many ideas that people can get involved in protecting our natural spaces!
My biggest takeaway was for my new area, to talk with restaurants and ask them to advise customers to ASK for a straw or plastic cutlery, and ask the restaurants to make that a new practice, and to talk to them in a way that helps them realize there's a way to help save money AND save waste. I love how simple that sounds, and how doable it can be. I'm totally going to try this!

107 Go Green with Alexa Pavan
20 Aug 2024
01:02:23
I've been following Alexa Pavan for a long time on Instagram - I love everything she posts and stands for, and I was so thrilled when she said yes to a conversation! I may have been a little giddy talking with her... Usually I like to get the back story of a guest, and get to the point where their life changed to be more sustainable, but Alexa doesn't have that - she grew up in a pretty sustainable household, and just extended it to include the rest of the world.
In her social media, she touches on shopping small, to support local businesses instead of padding the pockets of the ultra rich - and also to stop the big trucks from polluting the air. She talks about keeping our oceans clean, and why that's important (her parents owned a scuba diving business in FL while she was growing up, so she's very passionate about the ocean). She talks about imperfect sustainability, and why we shouldn't focus on doing EVERYTHING, but do what we're able to, and if everyone did what they could, we can make a real difference. And to get in touch with nature - spend more time outside and appreciate what's around us
Alexa encourages community advocacy, and to remember that our voices matter! We can support with our wallets and our voices.

27: Ranya Dube's Passion for Sustainable Food for Her Community
03 Jan 2023
01:28:13
Sometimes when you meet someone, you know it was just meant to be - Ranya Dube and I hit it off instantly when we met on Facebook a few months ago, and are big supporters for each other. Ranya is opening her second sustainability-like business, called The Good Food Place in Squamish, British Columbia, a town of about 200 people, and she wants to support local food growers, and encourage her community to eat locally and seasonably - learn why by listening!
This is a longer interview, but I couldn't get enough of what Ranya was saying. When someone is so clearly passionate about their project, I'm a total magnet to that - it's also something that I believe in, so I wanted to soak up all of her wisdom while I had her! So much valuable info was shared, but my favorite memorable thing she said was so simple and also profound. "We need more collaboration and less competition." Mic drop. Done. Right? She and I are in the same groove on so many things, and supporting community through food is definitely one of them!
Please give Ranya a follow on Instagram here or here and be inspired! Here is the website for The Good Food Place - so awesome!

Podcasting is so cool! I am so excited that I was able to have this conversation with Bill Yeo- he's so smart and interesting - there will DEFINITELY be more convos with Bill! Bill is the Community person at LL Bean, which is probably in the top 5 (if not top 3) things people think about when they hear Maine mentioned - hunting, fishing, biking and skiing equipment and clothing - a real outdoors store Bill built his own house TWICE - both with solar power - he said he's never paid an electric bill in 31 years! 106: The Schoolhouse Life - Homesteading with Lacey Grim
13 Aug 2024
00:53:22
Whew, this conversation was so good! Lacey and her husband are homesteading in North Carolina, and I noticed they're in a town that I was actually really hoping to find a house in, so that felt kind of Kismet to start off - but there's just so much more that she does that resonates and interests me!
My favorite thing we talked about was the food clubs they're organizing to help make sure their community has access to healthy, fresh, local food. How awesome is that? I'll be heading to visit them once I'm settled to see what they've got going on, and how I can take part/contribute to the food club, and I'm so excited about that!
They also are teaching their children the ins and outs of homesteading, like using whole animal, and why that's important. Also the value of community (you know I love that!) and taking care of each other. Lacey is so smart, and she and her husband Drew host their own podcast called The Schoolhouse Life, where they talk about these same things and more.
I learned so much from talking with Lacey! Listen here for the conversation-

17: Thoughts On Community Post Breast Cancer Fundraiser
11 Oct 2022
00:14:57
I've always had strong feelings about community, but yesterday I was awestruck when I attended a community event to support our dear friend Melissa, as she is heading into her 2nd chemo treatment this week. Another friend Emily, owner of Northern Belle Holistic, organized the fundraiser event to support Melissa and her fiance` Ryan as they are just beginning this cancer journey. The outpouring of love and support was inspiring to watch unfold as I viewed the silent auction tables (PLURAL!) and raffle items offered to benefit the cause. Listen here to hear more! Melissa isn't super active on social media, but she is doing as much as she's able right now, knowing there are so many people rooting for her. 14: Think Again About Food Waste, With Allison Taylor
27 Sep 2022
00:34:40
Allison Taylor is a military spouse and mom of 3, has a teaching degree, and is a copywriter. She espouses a very different food mindset than me, and I'm so glad to have had this conversation about food waste and overconsumption! Her podcast Everybodys Gotta Eat will come out officially in January, but the trailer is already available. As a military family that has moved around, packing (or not packing) and storing food is an important point, and she has such a great message to share. So grateful to have made this connection to open my mind. Listen to Allison's podcast trailer, Everybody's Gotta Eat here, and be on the lookout for more from her in January!

12: The Buzz About Beekeeping with Nicole Caron of Sunny Bee Apiary
13 Sep 2022
00:42:26
I met Nicole randomly at Replenova Farm Store, where I sell my jams, this spring, and found out she's a beekeeper, which is fascinating to me, so I instantly(may have come on strong) invited her to chat with me on the podcast, so I could learn all about it. She's got great stories to share, and good prep info for people interested in starting beekeeping. Nicole has been learning about bees for many years, and took college courses on the subject! She is passionate about educating yourself and having a mentor to be prepared, and to have the best experience, and she tells us all about it here! Nicole suggested checking out The Honey Exchange in Portland, ME for equipment and info. If you want to learn more about beekeeping, feel free to contact Nicole on Instagram here, or on Facebook here. 9. Making Your Own Soaps With Bri Campano
23 Aug 2022
00:34:43
Bri and I met virtually attending Podfest Expo in May, and knew nothing about each other then, but I learned quickly that she and I were meant to meet - for many reasons, but she has a soap making business, and that's a project that has been intimidating to me. She's also very smart tech-wise, and has helped me streamline some of my processes- I couldn't be more grateful for that! Bri, AKA The Clever Biotch shares secrets and recipes with us, so we can all get started and have healthier cleaning options for ourselves - listen here!

8. GoGo Visit Laura Marston's Zero Waste Store GoGo Refill!
16 Aug 2022
00:39:58
I felt like a total imposter even asking Laura Marston to be on the podcast, since I'm so new, but she is so generous, and said yes before I was even live. What a lucky person I am to have been able to have this conversation with her! Laura is so knowledgeable, and so passionate about helping her community make those changes to ditch the plastic in any way that we're able - her store, GoGo Refill, is a low-waste lifestyle mecca in South Portland, Maine - the first of its kind in Maine and New England, and also has the GoGo Van, to bring refill options to areas outside of the city (like mine!), to make it that much more accessible. The products will save you money, and you get high quality, eco-friendly home and body products that will keep plastic containers out of the trash, recycling bins and off the roads! Learn more by listening here! Check out the awesome store at: https://www.gogorefill.com/ Follow Laura and GoGo Refill on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/gogorefill/ or on Facebook at GoGO Refill. 105: Amanda Russo: The Breathing Goddess
06 Aug 2024
00:48:09
I loved this conversation with Amanda Russo, talking about breathwork and how it can actually heal us if we give it the chance. I met Amanda just a couple of months ago, but we've been following each other for many months, so I'm excited to get some quality time with her. I'm inspired by her spontaneous nature, and her free spirit, and she is also SO intune to every moment.
Amanda focuses on breathwork because when she tried it the first time she had such an impactful session that she had to learn more and learned how to provide the same gift to others.
*Full disclosure* I'm scheduling a breathwork session with Amanda, so I feel more knowledgeable -- and also to do some healing personally. I'm fascinated by all the healing modalities, and am so curious to share whether I feel different afterward or not-- Amanda was a hoot! You can listen to the full conversation here! 7. Simplifying Sustainability with Rebecca Lewis
09 Aug 2022
00:50:11
Rebecca Lewis may look like a very unassuming Physical Therapist, but to me, she's a sustainability super star. She's trying sustainable actions, one by one, to see how she can be more mindful of her footprint on the earth, and responsible for what she uses and tends to. It started in 2021 soon after she moved into her house, and was diagnosed with Long Covid, and was bed bound for months; she needed something to feel productive. It started with a loaf of bread, and then yogurt, and knitting, etc. Rebecca teaches us that some changes can be small or simple (cloth napkins!), and make a big impact. She also talks about courage to try new things. Listen, and hear more! 29 Jun 2022
00:04:20
A quick intro to Amy and how the podcast came about. I want to learn new ways that I can be sustainable, and improve my skills, so I'm going to talk to different people who may do things in a new way, to see what inspires me. I think there are others out there who may be on a similar path, so maybe we can learn together? 104: Vertical Farming Podcast and Life Shifts with Harry Duran
30 Jul 2024
01:03:45
I tease Harry Duran about how we first connected, because it makes me feel good about my scrappiness as a podcaster. He wasn't mean, just way bigger than me - and he still is, we're just connected now, which I'm so grateful for!
Harry's first podcast, Podcast Junkies just hit the 10 year mark recently, and I'm super grateful to have been a guest (see episode 332). If you remember the show Inside the Actor's Studio, with James Lipton, it's based on that, but for podcasters. There are so many podcasters, and everyone has a story --
His 2nd podcast, Vertical Farming, is about just that, and has brought him all over the world. He talks to CEOs of companies in the field to learn more about practices and purpose, and they love the chance to be featured, and Harry loves learning. so it's a win win.
He also has a group that he's guiding in podcasting called podcast Blueprint - Harry talks about it on his Fullcast website here: https://fullcast.co/
Harry and his partner moved a few years ago to Minnesota from NYC, and he doesn't talk about it a lot, so I thought it would be fun to see how that transition has been - listen to the full episode here!

103: Autism Rocks and Rolls with Sam Mitchell
23 Jul 2024
00:50:05
Sam Mitchell approached me, and was just so dynamic that I had to have him on the podcast to talk about Autism and his podcast Autism Rocks and Rolls, and you'll see why here!
I definitely couldn't do any better putting Sam into words, so I'm copying these from his initial email: "I am a high-functioning human being on the autism spectrum, but have a mission: to show people that I am not broken, do not need to be fixed, there is no normal in this world, and I am successful, with autism. I want to celebrate the successes of all people. I embrace who I am and feel as though everyone should do the same." And this: "I also am a motivational speaker, entrepreneur, sell merchandise, have several sponsors, sell ad space, am writer and blogger, and love to promote my podcast and business. I also have a published TED Talk called Souled Structure."
I loved talking with Sam, and learning all about the fascinating guests he's had on his podcast, and the great things he's doing with it. He is definitely not broken; he's an inspration - and he's a college student!
Here's the message he wanted everyone to leave with from our conversation: "You can be successful no matter what condition or disability you have." And that seems very plain to me-
You can find just about everything Sam and Autism Rocks and Rolls here on the website https://autismrocksandrolls.com/ - be sure to check out his excellent TedX Talk here!

102: Just Grow Something with Karin Velez
16 Jul 2024
01:07:01
I've been listening to Karin Velez's podcast Just Grow Something for quite a while, because I love how she offers helpful, bite sized truth bombs about growing produce every episode - and she also has this voice that is so easy for me to listen to...
Karin's story about where her podcast came from is fascinating, and she is offering super helpful info in all areas of growing food in bite sized amounts to help me understand how and why to make changes in my gardening practices.
We also discussed nutritional value, and why she wants EVERYONE to grow something; for the nutritional benefits and the mental benefits (#dirttherapy) as well.
Karin is also a runner - and a new runner, at that, and we talk about why running, and how it's going. Please check out Just Grow Something wherever you listen to podcasts - you'll be glad you did!

101: Bigger Life Adventures with Carrie Hoffman
09 Jul 2024
01:04:06
Man, I loved this conversation with Carrie Hoffman of Bigger Life Adventures! I was sold with sustainable travel, but this conversation is SO much more- Carrie lives the sustainable lifestyle - She lives on 10 acres in the mountains of Arizona! You can probably hear (and hopefully can tune out) the crackly sound, but she lives out in the open and that's our reality - if you can let go of that sound, you'll get her important message
As a Trauma Informed Yoga Instructor, Carrie takes her role very seriously. She takes her retreats all over the world, to inspiring, peaceful and SLOW paces, to let the body calm and remember what peace feels like.
A part that really stood out for me was that she goes to some of the same places; they form relationships with the residents, and support them as well - not overwhelming them with thousands of tourists - it's more than just money, after all. She talks about the amount of litter left after cruise ships leave. She is very mindful of so many things .
I loved this message that Carrie was hoping you would gather from our conversation: "Yoga is more than just a physical exercise you do in a studio. Being a yoga means being aware of your impacts on others and the world around you." And also this: "I use travel as a way to open people's eyes to climate change and global inequity ..."

99: Looking Forward and Looking Back with Amy
25 Jun 2024
00:12:55
I have a big request, you guys - I need some MALE people to give their perspective on menopause - I'm really doing it - I've been talking about the Menopause Panel since November/December, and it's finally happening. I'm so excited for these conversations, and to help people feel empowered and not feel broken when their body is changing in ways we aren't expecting; that we are not alone, and we don't need to quietly suffer with the changes.
In talking, we learn ways that have helped others, and gain a community of support.
In my own journey, I've lost a marriage, a partner, most of my self esteem and my home. It wasn't ALL menopause, but because by the time I figured out what was happening, it was too late. I want a better understanding about what goes on on the other side, a better understanding FOR the other side, and I want a better outcome for others.
Also, I appreciate your patience as I'll probably take a couple of weeks off of recording while I move in August. There will most likely be adventures to report on once I'm settled!
Thank you, as always, for listening to this little podcast, and for your support and curiosity about different ways we can practice sustainability. This is the most fun I've ever had, and I appreciate all the feedback and listens!

98: Energy Audits - Everything You Need to Know with Colin McCullough
18 Jun 2024
01:14:56
Oh man, I learned SO much about energy audits from Colin McCullough! He's been doing audits for a long time, and is passionate about it. He is one of the very few people I've talked to who said he would do his job for free if he didn't need money to survive - that says so much to me about him. Energy Audits help you to see how to make your home more efficient - and it might not be what you think - it wasn't what I thought, at least... He also offers consulting services, so definitely hit him up if you're interested in an audit or have questions!
I love Colin's story about when he was young and gave his family lightbulbs instead of scratch lottery tickets - I'm thrilled that he didn't stray from that childhood dream of making the world better.
Colin is also a Vegan cookbook writer! WHAT?! So cool! And he teaches Vegan cooking at the hospital in Augusta - what a generous guy, to share his knowledge!
Have you heard of an energy audit? Have you HAD an energy audit of your home? I'd love to hear from you how helpful it was for you! I've heard of them, but had no idea the extent of what happened. SO grateful to Colin for sharing this with us!
Colin's books are titled Smoothies that Taste Like Girl Scout Cookies and The Healthy Vegan on Amazon here and here

This is a shorty, you guys (you're welcome!) - just thought I'd give a little update, since some huge life shifts have happened for me - some, maybe a lot of you, follow on social media, so you know that I recently moved - short update: it's mostly going well! Also, as it has been for a while now, menopause was brought up - October is Menopause Awareness Month - as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Alzheimers Awareness Month - and the election, and all the tension that accompanies - to which I'm just going to say BE KIND please. Crazy weather and high stress is so hard on everyone, and some of us could be on the brink of a breakdown... we don't always know who needs just a moment of kindness, so please just try. But I'll be posting more menopause stuff as it comes up - in my life, and in my friends' lives, it has been helpful. If you've experienced symptoms, please pay attention! I seriously want to scream what I'm learning from the rooftops, because the new study results are life changing - for real! There are several books and documentaries coming out that are blowing the lid off of the darkness we've been living in, and I'm so ready for acknowledgement and validation and RELIEF! I said this in the episode, but there are definitely lonely times in my new place, so if you need some time away, give me a heads up, and my door will always be open. This is a beautiful place, southern Virginia. I'll feed you well - I'm in tight with the farmers, and my little food forest is coming along.....

97: Laughter Yoga AND Worm Composting with Cathy Nesbitt
11 Jun 2024
01:18:41
Oh my gosh, our friend Ande Lyons introduced us, and I was thrilled to get to talk to Cathy Nesbitt of Cathy's Composters about worm composting; I was told she also taught "Laughter Yoga," which I guess made sense, and was very curious about, but when I met Cathy on Zoom, I was instantly sold. Cathy has been teaching worm composting for over 2 decades (her WHY is so inspiring!), and has been teaching Laughter yoga for several years now - she has a weekly Chuckle Club zoom meeting on Tuesday mornings.
I attended one of Cathy's Chuckle Club meetings, and let me tell you how awkward it felt to be silly and make myself laugh (even harder when at work); I didn't realize that it takes practice to let go when we work so hard at staying busy... But laughter really IS the best medicine, and Cathy talks about why that is in this conversation.
As I'm pasting all of these links, I'm laughing, because Cathy told me she doesn't have a cell phone, which sounds weird in 2024, but she doesn't seem to be missing it; she has more links than I do!
I so enjoyed the chance to hang out with Cathy and learn from her. She seems to lead a super maintained, but I have a feeling she values her "down time" just as well... You can find Cathy Nesbitt at any of the links below

97: Mary Lewis and her Tiny Homestead
04 Jun 2024
00:56:36
Mary Lewis has her own podcast called A Tiny Homestead, where she talks with other homesteaders and people doing "homestead-y" things... She's had some pretty impressive guests, like Joel Salatin and me... It makes me think of my plan before this podcast, so I'm loving following Mary to see how that goes!
Mary's message that she's hoping you take away from this conversation: "take care of yourself, take care of the Earth, and always be curious-" you have to love that, right? Pretty much covers everything. I especially love that Mary is vocal about living on a small homestead, because I think that's a really important point to make; you don't have to live on a huge farm to be making a difference, or even providing for your family. And she does - you can hear it here!
OH - and Mary grew up in Maine! Small world - she's living in Minnesota now -

96: ReStyle with Shelly Cunningham
28 May 2024
00:54:37
Y'all, if this conversation with Shelly Cunningham doesn't make you want to shop at Consignment stores over cheaply made box store clothes, I don't know what will change your mind- I didn't know what I've been missing!
Shelly bought ReStyle, a consignment boutique, 12 years ago, and moved it a couple of times, but is now settled on Rte 1 in Freeport heading toward Yarmouth. When she invited me to come and see her place, I was curious, but not being a clothing shopper, a little scared that I'd be hounded.
When I opened the door, Shelly called out "Hi Amy!" and I felt instantly at home - like the show Cheers (though I had set a time that I'd be there)... Shelly is so friendly and genuinely wants you to feel good about yourself leaving, so she waits on you, finding things that she thinks would look good on you - you see, for Shelly, it's not just a "clothing store," clothing is a tool to help create confidence and success.
Shelly at ReStyle and her friend Tammy, who owns Kargos, another local consignment store that sells a lot of vintage items and natural fabric clothing, are Co-Hosting a Re-Fashion show this Friday 5/31 starting at 7pm in Freeport, and all are invited to celebrate second chance fashion that benefits Freeport Climate Action Now (FCAN).

95: Save the Food with Monti Carlo
21 May 2024
00:46:18
Have you guys seen Monti Carlo on Instagram? How about the Food Network or other Food TV shows? I feel so out of the loop; I've watched so little TV the last bunch of years that I didn't know she was on TV... BUT I found her on Instagram, and watched her great food saving tip reels. And then one day I saw her back story, and I had to learn more about her. She was so generous to accept my podcast invite, and share her knowledge and passion for food waste with us, and I'm so excited to share this with you all!
Monti's tag line is "Save the Food," and it's so heart breaking and beautiful where that stems from. I'm here for all of it - listen to it all here!

Debbi Mack gives a different angle on sustainability: on being an Author- we talk about the pros and cons of selling through an online mega site, what she's tried and what she's liked about self publishing, her previous gig working as an Attorney for the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), and how fulfilled her life is now with writing True Crime novels and her 2 podcasts. Debbie opened my eyes to so many things in this conversation - hear more here!

I had such a great time talking with Lisa Zawrotny - she is a wealth of knowledge about productivity and more! I love her gentle way of encouraging
Lisa is a busy person, and has learned a thing or two about productivity when she had young children and a mom with Alzheimers - she realized that she had something really valuable to offer the world. She now has a podcast, as well as he coaching. My FAVE thing that Lisa said around all of this was "Make space for what matters." in your head, and in your life. So powerful!
Wouldn't it be so great to feel free from clutter and overwhelm? Lisa is SO accessible! Check out her website here: www.positivelyproductive.com

Therese (Tee) Forton Barnes also goes by The Green living Guru, because she is firm about not bringing toxins into our homes. She has been researching for years, and is finding that her mother and Grandmother were right about natural cleaners and food.
She hosts a podcast called Green Living with Tee, where she talks to specialists about all the different ways we can remove toxins from our home, and why that's important. She very passionately states how we've all been trained to feel like we need a different cleaner for each part of our house, and how we are all just adding more chemicals, which have a lasting affect on our lives.
Tee also has a business called Tee's Organics, where she crafts toxin-free products that can be purchased. All of her links are below, but listen here for the full conversation!

Bonus: Maine Community Solar's Earth Month Celebration
26 Apr 2024
00:56:02
This is Maine Community Solar's 2nd appearance on Grounded in Maine, and I couldn't be more thrilled! We met Tony Napolitano in the fall when he told us about Maine Community Solar and why it's a great opportunity for Mainers, and other states where there's a Community Solar farm available to utilize - this time Tony's bringing his Business Partner/Cousin John, and they're 'debating' whether trees or seas are more worthy of a donation (hint: they're BOTH worthy!) in honor of Earth Month. We talk about the benefits of having trees and ocean, and what we can do to protect them. We also, of course, talk about (Maine) Community Solar, why that's important, and how easy it is to sign up, utilize renewable energy and get a discount on your electric bill (that's a win win WIN!)
Big thanks to Maine Community Solar for spending time with me, and for their constant dedication to helping people to participate in renewable energy and getting a discount on their electricity. They welcome questions about community solar any time, because education is top priority.

I stole this from Amy Dolan's Wider Tables website: "Amy Dolan is the host of The Feeding People Podcast, Founder of Sunday Supper Church, Strategic Consultant for the Chicagoland Good Food in Healthcare Initiative, and a Board Member for Pathways to Global Literacy. Amy believes that when people gather around tables to listen, understand, learn and connect—solutions emerge and beauty unfolds."
Since I met Amy I have been obsessed with her podcast, and her Instagram feed. She has such a beautiful, curious soul and is so kind. Amy is a former Pastor who took her job very seriously, and has continued caring for her community in her Wider Tables business and Sunday Supper Church. Learn more by listening here!
Here's a favorite quote from Amy from our conversation: "the goodness of this world to me, exists around us, mutually caring for and loving each other, and figuring out how to do that day to day." How can you not love her?
