Ayurveda and Holistic Wellness with Brett Aldrich Ep 17609 Dec 202500:49:57

When I was approached by Brett Aldrich's team, I wasn't quite sure how the conversation would go - if it would be something you would be interested in; but maybe this convo was more for me than you? I booked a visit with her, at least! You'll hear me fumble my way around what I thought Ayurveda was (clearly I'm wrong), but Brett's practice is absolutely fascinating to me! Did you know about Ayurveda before today?

Brett's practice is located in Maine, but she offers virtual visits as well, which is how my appointment will be the day before this airs! She touched on the topic of elements, which I've never heard of (not like the table of elements), and I had too many questions to let it go - so I've got an hour and 1/2 with her to get caught up. To quote Brett: "Just as the earth is made up of natural elements, so are we." She also said this: "sustainability begins within ourselves."

My takeaway: what we take into our bodies matters - it either helps or hinders, and if we understand that and take notice of our body's response, we may just have an easier go of life. That's not really new info to me, but the delivery was everything to me. I'm so looking forward to some extra time with Brett and learn about my elements, and how to live better with that info! I hope you learned something new in this conversation, too!

ReNature Author Clara Schroeder Ep 17502 Dec 202500:55:54

I was first introduced to Clara Schroeder through recent podcast guest Brittany Hansen, knowing that I would love talking with Clara - I'm super grateful to Brittany for that!

Clara is an Eco Therapist who has been working with big companies like Microsoft, Women in Cloud, Aura, and Insight Timer, and more. Clara recently published ReNature: How Nature Helps Us Feel better and Do Better, and she's here to talk about that, and about what EcoTherapy is. Her goal is to help people to deepen the connection to the natural world so they can find well being, hope and resilience.

One of the things Clara said was "When you love and care for yourself with intention and sustainable action, you are loving and caring for the earth." And to quote another recent podcast guest Vince Aiello, "We are nature," so that makes so much sense, right?

I loved getting to talk with Clara - I hope you enjoy it, too!

Open Wardrobe : Wardrobe Management Software with Julia Dietmar Ep 16630 Sep 202500:49:00

I learned a lot about wardrobe management in this conversation with Julia Dietmar! I had a totally different idea of what Open Wardrobe was going into this convo, but she set me straight. There are so many ways to use Open Wardrobe, developed by Julia. Her goal is to cut down on overconsumption of clothes by digitizing, which is very cool! you have your entire wardrobe handy, so when you go shopping, you already know you have 4 white tops and 3 pair of black pants, etc. OR you can pull up your wardrobe if you're shopping to see how a new red top would fit in - how many combos you can make, to make it feel worthwhile... There's also an option to get your fave clothing items REPAIRED!

The last company Julia worked with is called ThredUp; it's an online consignment and thrift store where you can buy and sell high-quality secondhand clothes. But she started in software programming, and just always loved fashion, so she's combined the two, which is brilliant! Julia's aim with Open Wardrobe is to empower fashion consumers with mindful dressing, and I'm here for that!

Julia is offering a 30% discount for my listeners when you set up an account with Open Wardrobe - just  enter code Grounded

You can find Julia and Open Wardrobe here: https://www.openwardrobe.co/

Startup Farm Stories with Ben Whatley Part 2!13 Feb 202401:16:40

I met Ben Whatley officially in 2020, just as the Covid Pandemic was ramping up, and, as a farmer, Ben was reserving time at the commercial kitchen I used for my jam business, and was asked to help rent out, so we talked - and he was SO cool. So much to share, and so much knowledge and passion for caring for the earth he was responsible for. I felt that instantly, and he was one of my first thoughts when starting this podcast, because he is so open about a lot of things.

Let me tell you I learned a LOT in this conversation! I had no idea how much Ben would share, and how cool of a story he had! Languages, car breaking down, crop failure, but also tons of great wins - he's had some of his employees for years! They have a great attitude toward crap weather. He has 2 cutie baby kids (I found out about # 2 just before recording - he's 11 weeks old!), and a beautiful life partner, and supportive family.

So many things inspire me about Ben and his farming practices - I'll let him tell them over these 2 episodes, but one of my favorite things if their dedication to use less plastic  - and that they have Anna, who loves trying out recipes with the produce and sharing (we'll talk about it in the 2nd episode), but also how the farmers in Maine all share info and help each other out with new ideas and tips to get past hurdles - for instance, this past summer's deluge of rain...

So many topics discussed - don't miss out!

81: Startup Farm Stories with Ben Whatley Part 106 Feb 202401:23:02

Ok, I guess I lied about whittling down this episode; it IS long - in my defense, I tried, but I couldn't bear to take anything out! So this is another 2 part-er...

80: Sonya Parenti, AKA Miss Love Terra, Talking About Fast Fashion!30 Jan 202401:12:53

Shoot, This moment has been a long time coming for me, and I couldn't be more happy to share this with you all - I'm such a big fan of Sonya Parenti - Miss Love Terra on Instagram, and her hard work to educate people and ask for mindfulness when purchasing cheap clothing, to be wary of its journey and consequences. I think I pride myself in being somewhat of a 'system bucker,' and fashion in general is not my thing (if you see me in pics I'm usually wearing a flannel shirt and jeans), so I enjoy this poking at the fashion worlf maybe a little more than I should...

These are Sonya's own words from my guest form:
"I’m full of enthusiasm about joining this podcast because, as an experienced professional in the fashion industry, I have a deep knowledge about the industry's complexities and challenges. I believe that transforming the fashion business is crucial in our collective efforts to address global warming. This podcast, hosted by Amy, serves as a powerful platform to have meaningful conversations and inspire change in ourselves and others. By joining forces, we can boost our impact, educating and motivating listeners to make choices that favour ethical and sustainable fashion. My goal is to use this opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future, sharing insights and strategies that can guide us towards a greener, more responsible fashion industry."

And I just LOVED this (my fave question on the guest form)
"The message I want listeners to take away is an understanding of the impact of collective actions on the environment. The quote 'RELAX IT’S JUST ONE CHEAP T-SHIRT', SAID 8 BILLION PEOPLE, highlights that while individual choices may seem small, when multiplied across billions of people, they have a huge impact on society and the environment. It's a call to be more conscious of our buying decisions, understanding that our demand for cheap, fast fashion contributes to unsustainable practices, environmental degradation, and poor labor conditions. The key takeaway for listeners is that people have the power to change big issues with our small daily choices."
Really, Sonya doesn't need me to add  anything to this at all.  Please listen for the full  conversation!

79: Sustainable Chocolate with Mara Mennicken, The GOOD Chocolatier (Part 2)23 Jan 202400:55:30

Welcome back to Part 2 of Mara Mennicken's conversation- we get a little bit deep, and it is fun to see so much passion from Mara - and it's much more than chocolate alone. Mara talks about social sustainability, and if you're trying to imagine what that's like in your head, just listen here - it's at the beginning of this segment, and it's SO good.

I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:

Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?

"Put your dollar where your heart is! Every dollar spent is a mini investment in the people and their mission who are behind the product or service- Buying local, organic, or from social enterprises makes an impact!"
And to that, I'll just say  AMEN!

78: Sustainable Chocolate with Mara Mennicken, The GOOD Chocolatier (part 1)16 Jan 202401:00:46

*This conversation was long, but I couldn't bare to take anything out, so I split it into 2 weeks, so make sure to listen next week for the wrap up!*

Mara Mennicken and I met on a podcasting Facebook page and it took me a fraction of a second reading about her sustainable chocolate business to know I had to have her on the podcast to tell me all about it!

Mara is from Germany, but came to British Columbia as part of a school exchange program, and knew she wanted to be there. She's done very well for herself, it seems!

Her thoughts on sustainability are a little more broad than some people's, and I'm totally here for it. Her company is sustainable, but more than just physical, like packaging and product, but social sustainability is very important to her, and she'll explain how and why. And speaking of important, I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:

Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?

"Put your dollar where your heart is! Every dollar spent is a mini investment in the people and their mission who are behind the product or service- Buying local, organic, or from social enterprises makes an impact!"

79: Talking with Tessa Terry of Alchemy RV Renovations!09 Jan 202400:46:32

I approached Tessa Terry on Facebook when I saw her post about her RV renovation business Alchemy RV Renovations because I was so intrigued - then I followed her on Instagram - oh my gosh, if you're on Instagram, you need to follow her! These RVs are 100% renovated and made brand new on the inside, and she shines them up on the outside, too! They go from basic , and possibly used and run down, to roomy and luxurious when Tessa is done with them!

Tessa has been in this business for about 2 years - TWO YEARS. She is booked up this year already! She has had several requests to renovate RVs in Australia! She just has a real gift for small space design that is unmatched. Wait til you hear her tell her story - if you're listening only, I bet you can imagine my face in your head when she talks about her HS graduation...

Tessa is married, is a mom of 2, and grew up in a family that bought 'fixer-upper'  houses, and her parents have had a lampshade business for about 30 years, so she totally gets the value of working with your hands. A quote from her website: "When I was little, I used to say “If men could go to the moon, this stuff on earth is cake” - Nothing is impossible, sometimes it just needs a new floor plan."
She has designed her own life, and she's giving RVs and other rigs a new life, which is so cool.

Here's Tessa's instagram to follow: https://www.instagram.com/alchemyrvrenovations/

77: FarmDrop CEO Hannah Semler Talks about Farming, Food and Community02 Jan 202401:07:11

I am so thrilled to share this conversation with you guys - I have wanted to have Hannah Semler on the podcast since the beginning! I'm a big fan of FarmDrop - I'm both a customer and a vendor, and I love having the ability to try items from several different local farmers that are bringing their product practically to me! Hannah will say it better, so I'll leave her to it.

Hannah also hosted a podcast called What is American Food, because she is so passionate about the origins - AND she was working with a food  waste rescue group as well. She also started a FarmDrop delivery program for Seniors who are homebound, so they, too can be nourished by our skilled farmers.
Listen to the episode for more about all of this, and why Farmdrop is so important to her!

Hannah and her trusty sidekick Barley travel the state of Maine together,  making sure things are organized and operating smoothly when customers come to pick up their goods. There are several dropoff/pickup Hubs throughout the state, and trying to get the vendors' products spread to other hubs than the one closest to them can't be easy!
You're going to love Hannah - I can't imagine not loving her passion for what she does!
Call to Action: I'd love to share this episode wide, and see if we can get some interest in other areas of the country for FarmDrop! Do you know of an area lacking a farmers market, or are you interested in being a FarmDrop vendor? The reach is WIDE with these products!

FarmDrop website is here - check out all the options available at different locations, and see how cool it would be to start your own or be part of one! Reach out to Hannah with inquiries about FarmDrop! https://farmdrop.us/

Farmdrop is on Instagram and Facebook as @farmdropus

76: Jen Joray's Move from City to Eastern River Farm26 Dec 202301:13:38

I know I keep saying that this episode is SO good, but I really feel like it is - and this conversation is no different - I had such a great time talking to Jen Joray of Eastern River Farm - I loved hearing their process of going from city dwellers to farmers, because I feel like it's a dream of many - at least mine, but I have a feeling that others are feeling it, too. So this can be somewhat of a 'blueprint' of a path - or an example of how it can be done - and successfully! They are teaching their daughters all the aspects of the farm, and have them assist with as much as possible. The farm business is mainly wedding flowers - did you see that coming? You may want to consider after listening to Jen talk about them!

Jen and her husband were doing their best to provide for their 2 daughters as teachers in Massachusetts when her Chemist husband one day came home and said " I think I need to be a farmer." And so they made that happen. But the journey wasn't instant, which is helpful - she documents it well, for anyone wanting to follow their lead...

Jen is an educator through and through, and has done SO much research into soil amendments and animal husbandry and planting and what plants work well, and ALL the farmy subjects, and, educator that she is, would absolutely LOVE to have to opportunity to share the info and experience that she's gained - seriously! Reach out to me, or reach out to her with any questions, and if she doesn't know the answer, she'll want to learn, and will find the answer for you!

75: Your Story, Your Purpose, With Brenda Simmons19 Dec 202300:56:51

I was recently a guest on Brenda Simmons'  podcast Be You: Your Story Your Purpose, and getting to know Brenda was such a nice time, and we really bonded over so many things, so we decided to continue the conversation over here. Brenda has so many things to talk about, like growing up close to her grandparents and learning from them, and the internships she did at school, how she's feeding her own family... we learned that we were both in Utah at the same time (I was only there for a year)!

Brenda's podcast is fairly new, and she's doing so well with it - 2 episodes weekly! She has really great topics to encourage women/people to find their own story to share to help others. Here's the link to it: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebeyoupodcast

I just loved this and had to keep it - from the guest form:
Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?
"If you don't have a relationship with earth, you won't want to take care of it. It starts with connection."

74: Living and Playing in a Sustainable World with Barbara Tibbetts12 Dec 202300:46:24
Barbara Tibbetts and I met sort of by chance on Linkedin, when a friend (shout out to Ande Lyons!) tagged me in Barbara's post about the Sustainability event she hosted in Nantucket this summer, and we've been talking regularly ever since - we found that we have a lot in common; we're both trying to spread the word about sustainability and that we should all be making more of an effort...
Here is a quote from her podcast guest form: "We can all make choices to live sustainably with the correct knowledge and make a difference for our health and the health and well being of our planet." Does that sound like someone that I'd want to hang out with, or what?

Barbara has started developing a website - a resource, to search different ways of being sustainable - it's still in the works, and possibly always will be, but check out Living and Playing in a Sustainable world here: https://www.lapsnow.com/

Barbara is currently focusing a lot of her energy learning about PFAS, and trying to repair some of the damage done during our non-stick everything phase.
She's so passionate, and is doing some excellent work; listen for more in this episode!

Slow Fashion with Happy Lilliput's Megha Patil Ep 16523 Sep 202500:59:47

Oh my goodness, this conversation with Megha Patil made me wish I had a young girl in my family! Megha describes Happy Lilliput as "Exquisite Celebration Attire" - can you just picture that? Megha said growing up in India birthdays are a BIG DEAL - like sometimes thousands of guests to celebrate you, and very fancy clothes. She was fascinated by fashion; she went to design school, and was frustrated by the waste that she saw, so she decided to design her own patterns and clothes. And boy oh boy, has she made an impact!

I really encourage you to check out my Social media post from September 22, or follow her website link below - I'll be sharing a few photos of Megha's team in India, and I snagged a photo from her website so you can see one of the incredible dresses they make. She is so proud of her team, and the pride they all have in the work they do. Happy Lilliput isn't just about sustainable Celebration Attire, but also supporting the super skilled folks in her home country, and the difference her business makes in their lives. Megha talks about how women are encouraged to stay home in India, and how flexible work schedules are, so that people are able to take care of their lives AND bring some money home and help to support their family, and also how big of an impact having some work has had on the team and their families.

I just loved learning about this process, and all the things that Megha is up to. I sure hope you do, too!

73: Amy's Look Back at the Year, and Upcoming Changes and Episodes05 Dec 202300:17:49

This is my 2nd December - wow! This is a toughie, as I'm in a bit of a tender place these days, but most of this year has been pretty amazing, and I have so much to be grateful for - namely the incredible people I've had the honor of speaking with and learning from, and the great folks who keep the social media lively and a fun place to hang out - I love getting to know you all!
The end of the year has taken a turn I hadn't expected, and I'll be making some changes of my own, but I don't intend to change much in terms of the podcast, BUT I do have some thoughts of things I'd like to incorporate, in light of my current life situation, starting with a Menopause Panel, to discuss this taboo subject that leaves us feeling broken and crazy (these are my words - it's possible that everyone doesn't feel this way, but they might) and just not knowing what is happening in their own body. I think this would be helpful for for anyone who interacts with people who are experiencing menopause, so don't think it's aimed at anyone specific. If you'd like to be on this panel, or add anything to be discussed, please be in touch with me. I'm feeling the need to be loud about this, and also bring to light other personal sustainability topics, so send me your ideas.
The year isn't over yet! I've got some super interesting folks these last few weeks, and into the new year - don't miss out!
Thank you for being with me this first full year of podcasting - I'm loving this so much!

I was all in to hear that Dida Lange was thrifting for a business, and I couldn't wait to hear all about how that worked, but when we were talking, she opened up this WHOLE other beautiful can of worms that changed everything for me. Replay: A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything with Philomene Cauchois21 Nov 202301:01:34

Philomene Cauchois  is just the most graceful, easy to be with person, and I could've spent hours talking with her. Philomene has her own podcast called Une Touche de Créativité Pour Tout Changer (A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything), to help people to find creative, fun ways to reduce waste and to just tread lighter in the world, and I'm here for it! She's been updating her own website to be ready for this episode to air, knowing that my listeners are mainly English speaking, and she's prepared some really wonderful things, including some of her favorite, regularly used recipes to share! Philomene is practically zero waste, even with 2 sons and a spouse, she makes almost everything, or buys from neighbors or local farms, she repurposes, gardens, homeschools, and really focuses on being light with her footprint. She lives in France, in what looks like a fairytale place called Chanteloup (which is now on my travel bucket list)

Philomene puts out a weekly newsletter that we can subscribe to here: https://creativitytochangeeverything.com/freezerowasterecipe/ this also gets you the free recipes, including her fermented ketchup!

Her facebook page is here:
https://www.facebook.com/unetouchedecreativitepourtoutchanger

And her beautiful Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/touchedecreativite/

They are both in French, so you can practice, or just close your eyes and enjoy the peace that her language and posts bring.

72: Learning About a New Homesteading Journey with Kathryn Garland 14 Nov 202300:58:04

Kathryn Garland is a super energetic mom, spouse and newer homesteader who is so real, and in the best way - I love how she lays it out. I also LOVE that she's in British Columbia. Literally on my tiny bucket list of 2 places I need to go someday! She shares a great message of start where you are and expand as you can, which is so simple, yet really works for everything, right? So profound. At least for me.

Kathryn shares their beginning story, which is only about a year and a half, and how insanely quickly they scaled up (she's not an "ease in" type of person), and how that's working. She's also about to release her podcast, called Homespun, which I'm SO excited for! She said November 20, so be on the lookout - I sure will be!

We do touch on some of the harder parts of homesteading (animal death), so I want you to be aware if you're extra sensitive to that. I needed a second to compose myself, but it's part of the journey, and it happens and is important to be prepared for.

This is part of Kathryn's  Instagram Bio: " Home based living (food, education, homesteading, healing) Loving life and simple pleasures"

I love that so much! Simple pleasures - so profound!

Please give Kathryn a follow on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/homespun.kathryn/
and be on the lookout around November 20 for the Homespun Podcast!

71: A Conversation with Author of The Groundcover Revolution Kathy Jentz07 Nov 202300:57:56

Oh my gosh, this was such a fascinating conversation with Kathy Jentz! I learned so much about ground cover, talking about her new book that's out called Groundcover Revolution, and she also loves talking about Urban Gardening(her previous book is about this), since she lives just outside the city in Maryland, and her gorgeous cats - you know I love checking out everyones' cats (check out the YouTube video to see them all - they're huge and stunning!)! She told me about saving lettuce seeds, which is something I've been wondering about for years, and taught me about lettuce seeds in general - GAME CHANGING stuff!!

Kathy is a really busy lady! She's written 2 books, publishes the monthly Washington Gardener magazine (and award winning publication for Mid Atlantic growers!), and has for many years, is President of a number of flower clubs - OH, and she also has a podcast! It's called Garden DC Podcast, and she focuses on a different plant each week! I love so much that she took the time to talk with me - I feel so much smarter just after that little bit of time with her- you can, too - just listen here!

70: The Serial Sustainable Entrepreneur Dragos Nistor!31 Oct 202301:15:47

I've been following Dragos Nistor for a while now on Linkedin, and am always in awe of the beautiful things that he posts of his honey business Honeybee and Co and his lavender business Lavender Gold, and I was so excited to get to actually talk with him and learn more about him! I'm going to let him tell you about him; I don't want to spoil it, but he's very mindful about sustainability in everything that he does. Dragos was born in Romania, and grew up in Italy, and now lives in the UK, but still has very close ties to where he comes from.

Dragos's future was all planned out as a banker, but he took a steep detour and followed his passion and his family roots in beekeeping, and hasn't looked back. His creativity and entrepreneurial nature weren't able to be ignored, and with good reason. He has so many things spinning all the time - he doesn't do still well!

I'm excited for you all to hear this story - listen in here!

Sustainable Preparedness Talk With Brekke Wagoner24 Oct 202300:59:48

Brekke (rhymes with Becky)  Wagoner's message with Sustainable Prepping is a little different than others and I'm so here for it! She's talking about preparing for a disaster or emergency, and just having a little extra to fall back on, to ease your mind in times of stress. In her own words, "With global climate change impacting our weather to be more intense more often, having an emergency preparedness plan isn’t just for doomsday preppers. It’s common sense and will allow you to be confident in the midst of a crisis."
Of course for me, growing up in the Mormon church, preparedness is taught, so I get it, and a lot of older generations may as well, but her aim is the younger generations, to teach that calm in the midst of crisis to the next generation as well. Listen here to learn more - I promise it's fun!

Brekke is really active on the socials, so check her out!

Her Instagram page is here: https://www.instagram.com/sustainable_prepping/

Her Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063665407475

She has an awesome YouTube channel, too! https://www.youtube.com/SustainablePrepping

67: A Conversation with Tony Napolitano, CEO of Maine Community Solar!10 Oct 202300:40:33

You guys, this is a big deal - for me, at least. I think that solar energy is such an easy way to harness energy - it's just a big investment... BUT - have you noticed the huge solar farms on the side of the road over the last several years? We're talking about those today!
Tony Napolitano  didn't say "I'm the CEO of Maine Community Solar," when he filled out my guest form, but I'm so glad it was him I got to talk to- he was so great, and has so much passion for his business. Maine Community Solar's job is mainly education, so they're ready for your questions! Their goal, and community solar in general, is to set up folks who don't have the means to have a full solar array, or don't own their home, to be able to enjoy the benefits of solar energy, and to engage more renewable energy in the regions. I'll let him tell you more - just listen in! I had a huge AHA here, and I am on fire right now!

66: Jenny Boghun Part 2: 23 Frugal Living Tips from the Great Depression You Need to Know03 Oct 202301:01:28

Ok, so it's been 6 months coming, since Jenny Boghun was my podcast guest and I said she would come back to go over this list 23 Frugal Living Tips from the Great Depression You Need to Know to Save a Ton of Money that she learned from her parents, and I've realized that I  have lost all concept of time... But here she is - better late than never, right? If you remember, Jenny's previous episode was called Big Living on a Tiny Homestead, and she talked about her tiny house, and her composting toilet, and she lives on Out of My Gourd Farm and grows gourds (duh)...
She's had a super busy summer with her Tiniest Farmstand in Maine, and other homestead projects. She's just back from celebrating her dad's 95th birthday, and these tips are very special to her, since she learned so many from him.
Here's the 23 Frugal Living Tips list: https://www.littlehouseliving.com/23-frugal-tips-from-the-great-depression-you-need-to-know.html

Food Recovery Large Scale with MCHPP Board Member Ali Waks Adams Ep 16416 Sep 202500:49:27

This conversation with Ali Waks Adams was soul feeding for me- I love talking to people who are passionate about helping to solve food insecurity, and Ali is on the board of Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program (MPHCC) in my hometown of Brunswick, Maine, and she's sharing some of the things that they're doing that have been working to feed the people of Maine. (I said Maine, not just Brunswick - Ali says they feed people from 14 out of the 16 counties in Maine!) We talked a little about the people who volunteer (over 500!) and the people receiving from MCHPP as well. We both cried a little...

MCHPP opened in 1983, and has grown in strides every year; to serving 1.2 MILLION meals in 2024, and now have a professional community kitchen to offer to local businesses and a 2nd building to hold donated food, just acquired 2-3 years ago. MCHPP receives extra foods from several farmers, and Growing to Give, where I volunteered, offering their clients fresh, healthy food to add to the shelf-stable foods from grocery stores. I've delivered several times from some of the roles I've held through work and volunteering.

MCHPP hosts regular fundraisers - there's an exciting one coming up on September 24th that's put on by local chefs and with donated food that's organized by Ali!

Ali moved to Brunswick from NYC and Philadelphia, and in order to meet her neighbors, she started volunteering at MCHPP, and fell in love with the people she served. She is a professional private chef; her business is called Balaboosta, and she has sure made a name for herself! Balaboosta's tagline is "a boutique catering company in Mid Coast Maine, sometimes it’s fancy, sometimes it’s cozy, always delicious." She is very passionate about feeding people, and it shows in everything she does!

You can learn all about MCHPP at their website: https://www.mchpp.org/

Bonus: Happy International Podcasting Day! Special Episode Joined by Amy Lewis30 Sep 202301:19:23

Happy International Podcasting Day, everyone! To honor the incredible community that podcasting is, and the amazing small world that I apparently live in, I recorded a fun episode with my new podcasting friend Amy Lewis, who also lives in my town, and has a super awesome podcast called Pop Culture Retrospective, to honor her older sister, who she lost a few years ago. It's such a fun podcast, and I've wanted to be wanted to be a guest on her podcast since I started listening, so this was a dream! Amy is the best host, and knows SO many facts about pop culture! I remember our first real conversation - I had commented on a few of her episodes previously, but she commented on my episode about Springworks Farm in Lisbon Maine, and said one of her students worked there, and she was happy to learn more about it, and my brain was spinning in so many directions, thinking that this podcaster that I'd been following could be local--
Amy quizzed me on 90s trivia, and 90s pees, I let you down, I'm so sorry. In my defense, I was attempting to appreciate country music in Utah, and working in the 90s, so not really in "the scene" (like I was in High School lol), but Amy didn't tell me I sucked...

Please find Amy and Pop Culture Retrospective where you listen to podcasts - her website is here https://www.popcultureretrospective.com/
She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/popcultureretrospective/

Amy is also an amazing photographer! She photographs families, Senior photos, head shots, real estate, Air B&B, you name it! https://www.amylewisphotos.com/

65: Sustainable Sensory Toys and More With Jennifer Stalley26 Sep 202300:59:13

I loved this conversation with Jennifer Stalley, whose life is  just so interesting! Jennifer lives in California with her spouse and daughter, loves horses and gardening and works in marketing. She came to a stark realization during the Pandemic that sparked  Meemzy Magic toys. She was purchasing sensory toys for her daughter who was very young during the Pandemic, since everyone was home all day, but still had to work - she decided she was able to make them herself, in a more sustainable way, that was every bit as entertaining, if not more so. She tells this story SO much better than I do, so listen in here!

Jennifer is a Kindred Spirit, and just so aware of her responsibilities when it comes to the future, and shares some startling stats that blew my mind.

You can check out sensory toys and kits at Meemzy Magic here: https://www.meemzymagic.com

64 Stephanie Bolduc: A Woman of Environmental Passion!19 Sep 202300:54:45

This conversation was so fun for me, as I am enjoying so much getting to know Stephanie Bolduc, whose dad is my cousin. They live in the UK, so I don't get to see them often, and I didn't know Stephanie really at all until this year!

Stephanie is very involved in environmental  issues, and she takes her footprint on the earth very seriously, but in the most gracious way. She has discovered foraging recently and really enjoys finding new uses and value in what we see outside. She is also learning about hot compost (I didn't know about it either, if you were thinking that), and lets us know what she's learning.
Hear all about it in the episode!

Stephanie went to school to work in theater (is it theatre in the UK?), and was creating costumes and theater sets, so she's super crafty and creative.

You can find Stephanie on Instagram  at: https://www.instagram.com/bold_duck/
She has a 2nd Instagram account for home renovations and cat pictures here: https://www.instagram.com/number_98_mate/

63: Andrea Canny's Big Sustainable Community Idea12 Sep 202301:07:57

I just love Andrea Canny; she had mentioned this idea on another podcast, and I was just dying to tease it out and learn more about it, so here it is! Andrea has a heart of gold and just LOVES her slice of heaven where she's living in Cincinnatti, and with good reason!
Andrea Canny is a fantastic actor, singer, artist and teacher, and that's what I know from spending 3 days with her in March of 2022 at the Podcastaway Retreat, to learn the ins and outs of beginning podcasting with the 10K Dollar Day podcast folks. Andrea was the Podcast Producer at the time, and I felt instantly at home with her, and we bonded over gardening and cooking and family. Now she's a Virtual Assistant while looking for the next acting gig, and managing her family's home property where she grew up.
Andrea's idea makes me so jealous of people who live near her, knowing her incredible plans for her space, but I'll let her tell you - just listen here!

62: What's Great About Krill Oil? With Nancy Chan05 Sep 202300:59:36

Nancy Chan's information that she shared was fascinating! Nancy works with Kori Krill Oil, and shares why Krill Oil is a better supplement than Fish Oil, which I've been taking for years, and how Kori is sustainably harvesting it. That alone was pretty great, but she has so much more to share!
Remember, Nancy is talking with little ole me, and she was so patient while I asked my silly questions. I'm totally sold now, and can't wait to try Krill Oil. The website is here if you'd like to check it out: https://www.korikrilloil.com/

61: Smart Recycling and Less Household Waste with Julia Goldstein29 Aug 202300:56:10

Julia Goldstein is a real gem of a human, and I'm so glad we connected!

Julia is an author in Washington state and lifelong learner who loves to explain complex subjects, who also is very passionate about sustainability, and she combines the two things to help us to get to the bottom of the mysteries of recycling and other areas - how awesome is that? She's written a few short books to explain recycling and composting, and she has a blog where she offers updated information on things she's currently excited about. If you subscribe to this blog when you check out her website, she offers a really great gift!

In Julia's own words: "I believe that our society needs to change how we make all kinds of products, and individuals can influence businesses through our buying decisions. I can share the changes I have made in the past 5-10 years as I've learned more about packaging, composting, recycling, and similar topics."

Here's Julia's website:  https://juliagoldsteinauthor.com (don't forget to subscribe to her blog! Also check out the amazing book offers in the sustainability realm)

60: Less Junk, More Journey, With Michael Andersen22 Aug 202300:58:37

Gosh, did I have a great time talking with Michael Andersen about living in his RV! Life is so much more than living in an RV, though, and that's where it got really interesting. I want to leave you with something to gain from listening, but know that Michael has quite the story, and is making the most of this time now. I'm hoping to get to meet him in person when he travels to Maine this fall!

Michael is a website designer, and also created a website for his fellow Nomads, to help them find farmers' markets and good food, and to share great places to travel and see, as well as a way to connect with others. Check out https://travelinggatherings.com/

I was so impressed with how much thought Michael had invested in this adventure, and how much his life has changed, living in a 180 square foot RV in the best ways - listen here for details! (sorry about Rudy the Rooster in the background - he was also loving what he was hearing!)

59: Get Crafty, Not Trashy with Liz McDade15 Aug 202300:49:06

I was excited to get to talk with Liz McDade, because I'm a daydream crafter, but don't give myself time to learn to do new things. I had no idea who I was speaking with, though! Liz is no joke on the crafting and sustainability front! Check out this link of speaking events she's done! https://notraceshop.com/media/

Liz is also SO easy to speak with, and I love that she is so real about perfection. She has a shop where you can buy some crafted low-waste items, but she is moving toward teaching these days, which is an extra gift, to learn and keep the skills you've learned!

AND, for any old school TV fans out there, Liz and her brother have a podcast where they watch the TV show Columbo 1 episode at a time and talk about it - it's called Trench Coat, Cigar, Peugeot: Wandering with Columbo!

58: Author Liz Shipton On Exploring the World In a Sailboat08 Aug 202300:42:39

Liz Shipton's story is a fascinating one; she's a musician and author, and her partner is a sailing instructor, so they bought a boat and are spending 3-5 YEARS sailing the world. So far they're almost 2 years in, and she's published several books out of a 9 book series. Oh, and they have their dog Ayloy, with them, too (sorry I called her Loki - that's the boat's name)!

Liz's books are based loosely on their adventures, and also on climate change; which she'll talk about how that's affecting this adventure... Book one is called Salt, and is available on Amazon/Kindle, found here: https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Spicy-Dystopian-Fantasy-Thalassic-ebook/dp/B0BZN2K9F9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Z1E06B18BOO1&keywords=liz+shipton+salt&qid=1691151408&sprefix=liz+shipton%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-1

I love stories like Liz's, because her love of the earth and the beauty that surrounds her also motivates to take better care of it. (There is a method I'm working toward). Sailing the world is an education in many ways, and she seems to be taking it all in-

57: Merge Impact's Ben Adolph and Beth Robertson Martin Talk Food Sustainability01 Aug 202301:06:14

Wow, this was an eye opening conversation for me! I realized that my expectation of food sustainability is very childish (child-like?), thinking that just growing good food and making sure that everyone can eat is all we need to know. Ben Adolph and Beth Robertson-Martin are the Co-Founders of Merge Impact, and they are crunching data to assist farmers in this food system "situation" that we're in, and thank goodness for that! There is really so much more to growing food on a large scale, and what growers have been doing for many years is not nurturing the earth, so Merge Impact is encouraging change to heal the earth, to provide more nutrient dense food for everyone, and to create biodiversity. Listen here to hear them say it better than I can!

I was also happily corrected with Beth's answer and Ben's agreement about what sustainability means to them, and I agree wholeheartedly!

SO much great info shared - listen in to this great conversation here!

Under his direction, Alter Eco isn't just delivering delicious chocolate and granola; it's doing so with a mission that aligns perfectly with people who are looking for better options. Keith's initiatives in regenerative farming and sustainable packaging are reaching a broad audience. Alter Eco does more than purchase from growers, they provide the plants and encourage regenerative practices, which has made a huge difference in the quality of product AND the region, as we just discussed last week with greening cities, the biodiversity makes such a difference! The trees provide some shade from the intense sun, and the lower plants keep the ground more moist for the trees - it's a beautiful symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits.

Keith is very proud of the company, and talks openly about the work they do. I grabbed this from their annual Regen Report for 2024: "Regenerative agriculture has been and will continue to be a major focus for us. Our goal is to source 100% of our cacao beans and oats from farms practicing regenerative agriculture and we won't stop until we get there. We also keep an eye to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated fairly and receives a fair wage." He also said "We're improving the planet one chocolate bar at a time!" Don't mind if I do! Also, their wrappers are compostable - no waste!

You can find Alter Eco at most grocery and health food stores, or here: https://www.alterecofoods.com/ All their socials are there

Bonus: Break the Silence on Domestic Violence with Veronica Life27 Jul 202301:02:59

I realize this is not the topic we're used to hearing about on this podcast, but it's a necessary one, and I'm happy to support it.

Veronica Life and I met virtually at Podfest Global in April, when she talked about domestic violence and stole everyone's heart. The Numospect folks that I've been working with for the last year were also affected, and every Friday on their live show (1:30-2:30pm EST on all socials) they have Veronica on to talk about domestic violence, to make it a less taboo subject, because people need to not feel alone in their experiences.

Veronica shares some sobering numbers, as well as her own story, and why we need to make this a priority. What I've been most struck by is her goal to change a person's experience from shame, and leave them feeling JOY and hope. There's a lot of work to get there, but I'm inspired by the work that is happening with The Purple it Up for Domestic Violence Awareness people.

There are many ways to help support this organization! From money donations, to purchasing merch (the shirts are unbelievably comfy!), to offering services or home space for victims, taking the Purple it up Challenge to sharing the message, to being a friend and supporting those who need it.

I'm inspired by the work that Veronica and her team do daily, and want to support them in any way that I can, like featuring a podcast episode on domestic violence. I have taken the pledge to not drop the ball on domestic violence awareness - will you join me?

Here's a link to their website: http://www.purpleitup.org/Purpleitup%20Our%20Events.html

Here's a promo video for Purple It Up! https://youtu.be/9qfUs2gOTfA

56: A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything With Philomene Cauchois 25 Jul 202301:01:34

55: Cool Your Sweats With Cathy Rust18 Jul 202301:14:02

WOW, did I learn a ton during this conversation! Cathy Rust and I talked about so many things menopause related, and just people who run hotter would benefit from some of this. We talked about fabrics that are better for your skin and why, and the nightgown that Cathy designed for forks who suffer from night sweats.

Cathy Rust's specialty is in Green Building, so she learned about fabrics in that area, but it sure has come in handy in this venture!

I was telling my husband about the nightgown and the conversation about fabrics, and he asked if there was a t shirt - instead I bought her pillowcases, so I'll report back-

54: Midcoast Vegan's Tim Holland Talks Sustainable Food Choices11 Jul 202300:54:48

Tim Holland is a super interesting guy, and I'm so glad for the chance to get to know him! He is a musician, a podcaster and makes kick butt vegan meats and cheeses! I've met Tim a couple of times in the last few years, but got to see a better picture of who he really is in this conversation - he is a man who wears many hats! Husband, dad, rapper, plant enthusiast, gardener, cook, world traveler. I'm sure I missed a bunch of other things, but that's what I remember!

Tim tells the story of how he came to make vegan meats and cheeses, and he makes very popular Italian sandwiches and charcuterie plates with them - a family member of mine told me how incredible the sandwiches are! Listen here for the full conversation, and enjoy the crickets in the background - Tim was outside since everyone in the house was sleeping.

53: Fred Horch Talks About His Sustainability Handbook and Store04 Jul 202301:17:49

I had Fred Horch in my mind from the moment I started considering a podcast about sustainability, since I knew that he had a store that carried a ton sustainable home items, and his political ventures were in support of the constituents. Fred owns an energy company called Spark that works with businesses in Maine to update old and  inefficient systems. He also volunteers with our local Rotary group, and at Maine's Common Ground Agricultural Fair, managing the attendees' composted items. Fred's store, FW Horch not only sold goods, but offered free advice how to use the items sold, and how to add other updates - so cool!
Fred is an excellent example of sustainable living, and is a wealth of knowledge -Mainers are lucky to have such great leadership in this field!
This is a longer episode, but I did cut out a little bit to try to be as close to 1 hour as possible; there was just so much for Fred to cover! You can catch the full conversation on YouTube!

Find what Fred's up to at his website here, and subscribe to his handbook to get so much info how to be more sustainable in different ways: https://horchhandbook.com/

A Conversation About Ethical Fashion With Rachael Roberts27 Jun 202301:02:58

Rachael approached me to ask if we could promote her ethical, affordable clothing line, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity! I love the ease of this conversation, and I LOVE her ideas! She found a very cool manufacturer near her(Wales) that will take old, even holey clothing back and reuse it! They use natural fibers and dyes, and have a system that doesn't dump into waterways (hallelujah!). Rachael talks about the need for affordability in sustainable clothing, and products in general, which I totally agree with. Her dog Goldie makes an appearance in the YouTube version.

Keep your eye out for these clothes!

Happy 1st Birthday to Grounded in Maine Podcast!21 Jun 202300:13:56

Wow - I'm so excited that I've officially been a published podcaster for a year! Thank you to all who have listened, been a featured guest and taught me, those who has given feedback and encouragement, been part of my community - thank YOU for the opportunity to share this message of sustainability!

This past year has been nothing short of life changing. I was asked to have a documentary Director on my podcast to promote regenerative agriculture - little old me; a newbie podcaster! I was given the opportunity to sell Amy's Garden Jam to Broadway! I was just invited to host a table at an upcoming conference of Social Workers to share my message of sustainability and community! And I've gotten to meet such stellar people in the podcast space, and in podcast guests!

I'm just a whole lot of grateful for this past year of growth, and am looking forward to continuing to serve and learn to be a better steward of this globe that we call home.
I've had people ask me what my favorite conversations have been so far, and every single person I've spoken with has added to my world in a different way, and there's no reason to make it competitive. It's all so valuable!

Here's to another year of sharing stories of change and working toward community sufficiency, friendship, and learning!

Greening Our Cities with Joshua Harrison Ep 16202 Sep 202501:30:45

Y'all, I hope you love this conversation with Joshua Harrison as much as I did - I was glued to what he was saying! As we talked in the middle of a hot hot summer afternoon, his plan is to cool our paved, blazing hot cities, in the simplest of ways.  He has decades of research and experience to prove it works. Joshua started asking about solar energy in the 70s (incredible story!), and never stopped! He has a center for education (the Center for Force Majeure) and is Co-Founder of a retail business (Leaf Island). He is based in NYC, and has installed several green roofs already, with great success. I just love this so much - utilizing the flat roofs in the city; growing plants or food, lowering heating and cooling costs AND bringing the neighborhood temperatures down? That sounds like a no-brainer to me - everyone wins!

I grabbed this from Joshua's website about the Center for Force Majeure: "The Center for the Study of the Force Majeure brings together artists and scientists to design ecosystem-adaptation projects in critical regions around the world to respond to climate change." I think that's so beautiful!

Desiree McCabe Isn't Afraid to Try Anything - In the Best Way!30 May 202300:47:18

*Disclaimer: we know the sound is not awesome. It was Earth Day, and Desiree was outside to enjoy it. When offered to re-record, she didn't want to take away from the authenticity of the conversation, and I'm honoring that. Please still listen - the message is SO good!*
Desiree and her fiance Davis and I talked about having this chat last OCTOBER while farm stand shopping, and I'm so excited about this finally airing!
I am in awe of people who can say "what's the worst that could happen?" and do whatever thing they want to - I'm such a scaredy cat!
Desiree didn't grow up in a 'homestead-y' home, though she says she remembers her grandmother gardening - we just were young, and weren't thinking about what they were doing as sustainable- it was just a 'grandmothery thing,' so we didn't give any attention. These days, though, Desiree's not only gardening, but she's eating weeds from her lawn - and more!
I just love her attitude about it all, and also ALL that she's doing is such a contrast from where she was, and that impresses me so much.
Desiree works full time, and on weekends you'll find her making the week's bread or kombucha, tending her chickens and garden- and always with her beautiful, super sweet  dog. She also said something so powerful toward the end of this episode that I hope you'll catch!

47: Get Outside with Amy Bushatz of Humans Outside Podcast23 May 202301:04:11

I was stopped in my tracks when Amy Bushatz told me about her project Humans Outside 365 - it was so simple, yet we all have times when we need a break, and basking in the sun just changes your whole outlook, right?

Amy has her own podcast called- you guessed it, Humans Outside. She has done a lot of research, and has talked to so many people (she's got over 300 episodes published!) about the benefits of outside time, and will tell us about just a few of them in this conversation, and, more importantly, what brought her to this place in her life to make this choice and spend so much time talking about it.

Amy is a journalist by trade, and moved her family from Tennessee to Alaska without even visiting. She documents each day/outside 'session' with an Instagram post, so definitely follow her there!

Amy Bushatz and her family since we talked have traveled to Hollywood, CA and the White House to promote a documentary that they were involved in - again, you'll have to check out her Instagram posts to get caught up, but get a good look at Amy and her passion for outside in this episode!

46: Joy Kelly of Chapala Gardens Talks About Growing and Eating More Plants!16 May 202300:46:42

I found Joy Kelly on Linkedin and was impressed by how active she is there, and when I learned about her rooftop farm I knew I had to have her talk on the podcast. Joy is super passionate about healthy eating, and is doing everything she can to share the message, and I'm here for it all!
Joy has a produce growing tower to make growing your own produce almost foolproof, and she gives funding options when you listen. She also shared some incredible stats that you can see her share on my YouTube channel.
Joy and her daughter Jake have a really entertaining YouTube show of their own called Cook With Jake and Joy, with some really great looking (and easy enough to do for yourself) plant-based foods, and the commentary while doing it will keep you coming back for more. Listen to the whole episode here!
