Flight Emissions Data Is Everywhere Now. How Did This Happen?

jeudi 26 juin 2025Duration 40:49

GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers. Today, when travelers search for flights on most major platforms, Google, Skyscanner, and others, they'll see carbon emission estimates displayed alongside ticket prices. The organisation behind this initiative is Travalyst. They’ve spent years working to standardize how flight emissions are calculated and presented to travelers. I wanted to understand how this all came together, how one organisation managed to get the industry aligned, and more importantly, whether it's making a real difference. So I spoke with Polly Lomas, Travalyst's Head of Strategy and Impact, and Alix Farr, a Senior Product Manager at Travalyst. One thing that really stands out is the industry cooperation. Major players like Google and Skyscanner haven’t just signed on. they’ve helped lead. It’s a rare example of alignment across a competitive sector, and it raises a bigger question: Can other parts of the travel industry follow suit? And should they? Iceland’s Glaciers Are Shrinking: What's the Risk to Tourism?

mercredi 18 juin 2025Duration 23:35

GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers. Haukur Einarsson, founder of Glacier Adventure in Iceland, knows the reality of glacier melt all too well. Over the years, he’s built a base camp, hotel, restaurant, guesthouses, and a glacier museum. “I have seen dramatic changes since I started working here. I can stand with a group and just point out where the glacier used to be,” he told Skift. “I can explain to tourists how 10 years ago there was a beautiful ice cave there. Then I point and there's two and a half to three kilometers further of empty land. The glacier has melted that much in 10 years.” You can read a story that provides additional background here: Iceland’s Glaciers Are Shrinking: What's the Risk to Tourism? Why Short-Term Rentals May Do Well in a Climate-Disrupted Future

mercredi 11 juin 2025Duration 29:22

GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers. Marcus Räder, CEO and co-founder of travel tech firm Hostaway, joins the podcast this week. Räder pointed to the Covid-19 pandemic as an early preview of what the future might hold. According to Räder, short-term rentals saw demand spikes during the pandemic, especially in rural and nature-based destinations and he believes that trend will only accelerate as climate impacts increase. “People could travel in a nice way locally. You drive nearby to get to a nice cottage by the mountain or close to a lake,” Räder said. “What’s going to happen due to climate change is that vacation rentals are going to become more exclusive and expensive. Increased extreme weather will make it harder to travel.” You can follow all of Skift’s coverage of travel and climate at our Climate Hub. Note: Skift’s in-depth reporting on climate issues is made possible through the financial support of Intrepid Travel. Tourism Is Hotter Than Ever: Extreme Heat Is Changing How We Travel Now

jeudi 3 juillet 2025Duration 42:22

GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers. Today, we look at extreme heat in Europe and elsewhere. I covered this in a feature-length story in early June that you can read here ('It's Like Being in an Oven:' How Extreme Heat Is Changing Travel), and then again multiple times over the past few weeks as temperatures broke records. Just this week tourists died across Europe from heat-related causes and Paris shut down the Eiffel Tower because of record temperatures. I'm joined today by Ivan Vukovic, a tour operator in Dubrovnik. Vukovic tells me about the impact heat is having on one of Europe's most popular, growing tourist destinations. The Hidden Carbon Cost of AI in Travel

mardi 28 octobre 2025Duration 38:58

Artificial intelligence is transforming travel — from flight optimization to customer personalization — but what about its climate footprint? In this episode of GreenShift, host Darin Graham speaks with Emma Cox, Chief Commercial Officer at Climeco, about the growing carbon cost of AI and what it means for travel companies racing to adopt it. Cox explains how training and running AI models consume massive amounts of energy, why data centers are becoming a new emissions frontier, and how businesses can start accounting for AI in their sustainability reports. Together, they unpack the balance between efficiency gains and rising energy demand, the role of credible carbon offsets, and how travelers can be empowered to make more informed choices. AI could help the industry cut emissions — or quietly make them worse. The question is: will travel companies start counting the carbon before it’s too late? --- You can follow all of Skift's climate coverage on our Climate Hub. G Adventures Founder on Why the Travel Industry Isn’t Ready for 2030

mardi 21 octobre 2025Duration 42:37

In 2021, hundreds of travel companies signed the Glasgow Declaration, pledging to halve tourism emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. But just five years later, reality looks far from those ambitions. In this episode of GreenShift, host Darin Graham sits down with Bruce Poon Tip, Founder and CEO of G Adventures, for a frank conversation about why the industry is falling short on climate goals. Poon Tip reflects on the limits of carbon offsets, the political and economic headwinds that have slowed climate progress, and the tough decisions G Adventures has made—like retiring one of its most popular expedition ships—to meet internal emissions targets. He also shares why sustainability can’t remain a luxury item and how travelers themselves hold the power to drive systemic change. This is a candid look at what it really takes to decarbonize tourism — and why honesty might be the industry’s most important climate strategy. --- You can follow all of Skift's climate coverage on our Climate Hub. Balancing Paradise: The Bahamas’ Plan for Sustainable Tourism

mardi 14 octobre 2025Duration 41:21

Tourism is the lifeblood of The Bahamas — but with 11 million annual visitors and a population of just 400,000, growth comes with high stakes for the environment. In this episode of GreenShift, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper joins host Darin Graham to discuss how the Bahamas is managing record tourism while protecting its coral reefs, mangroves, and pristine beaches. From regulating resort development and promoting renewable energy to enforcing environmental codes and encouraging community-led tourism, Cooper outlines how the island nation plans to stay both prosperous and sustainable. But with most travelers still arriving by cruise or air — two of tourism’s most carbon-intensive sectors — can The Bahamas remain a model for climate-conscious development? --- You can follow all of Skift's climate coverage on our Climate Hub.
