Episode 11 - Backlash, Bezos & Beavers... Naturally 💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️25 Apr 202500:34:22

🚀 Is launching celebrities into space really a good idea?

Is launching celebrities into space *really* a good idea? Was Katy Perry's 11-minute space-related adventure worth the environmental impact?! Is space tourism *ever* a worthwhile venture, or just a handy way for billionaires to lower their own space travel costs? Imogen and Abbie unpack it all in front of a live audience, diving into the complexities of space tourism versus space exploration. They weigh up the potential benefits against the very real environmental costs, pressing ethical concerns and opportunity cost. Plus, they address some interesting backlash from Episode 10 and finish on a heartwarming high with the incredible story of beavers taking environmental action into their own paws (literally!), reshaping ecosystems for the better and saving millions of euros in the process. Enjoy!

S2: Episode 6 - From Litter to Legislation: The Post That Sparked the UK Vape Ban!20 Jun 202500:52:23

🌍 From Beach Litter to Vape Ban: Laura Young (@LessWasteLaura) on Campaigning for Change

In this episode of Green Queens, we’re joined by environmental scientist, campaigner, and all-round climate powerhouse Laura Young—better known as @LessWasteLaura—to unpack how a tweet about litter picking turned into a nationwide movement to ban disposable vapes in the UK.

What started with a walk on a beach covered in plastic waste quickly snowballed into a grassroots campaign that gained support from 29 out of 32 Scottish councils—and brought the issue all the way to Westminster. Laura led this while studying for her PhD and creating accessible, science-backed content.

📊 As of June 1st, disposable vapes are officially banned in the UK. We doth our caps!

🎾 What does it take to make a world-famous tennis championship like Wimbledon more sustainable—without losing its legacy or strawberries and cream?

In this episode of Green Queens, we sit down with Hattie Park, Head of Sustainability at the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), to talk about what it really means to green a heritage institution from the inside out.

S2: Episode 8 - Why Your Bank Might Be Fuelling Climate Change (And What You Can Do) 💰11 Jul 202500:52:37

"Money is not neutral. It’s always doing something. We exist to challenge what a bank should be in society.”

In this episode of Green Queens, Imogen Bhogal and Abbie Dewhurst sit down with Zoe Ruthven, Director of Marketing and Communications at Triodos Bank UK — one of the world’s leading ethical and sustainable banks — to talk about what it means to bank with purpose.

Zoe shares:

💰 Why money is never neutral

💰 How banks have financed trillions in fossil fuels — even after the Paris Agreement

💰 What makes Triodos different from mainstream banks

💰 And how your everyday choices (including your current account) can drive systemic change.

From care homes to Gympanzees, fossil fuel divestment to farming transitions, Zoe delves into how finance can serve people and the planet — not just profit.

💸 TLDR: You don’t have to be rich to make your money matter. We can redefine value — and who gets to create it.

S2: Episode 9 - Low Carbon, High Chaos: Green Queens’ Train to Portugal (Pt. 1)!18 Jul 202500:37:45

✈️ vs 🚄: In this special two-part episode, Imogen and Abbie slow-travel to a fellow sustainability presenter friend’s (Hi Jess!) wedding in Portugal. Only, they forwent the fast route, swapped out the budget airline for an  @InterrailEU  Global Pass (very kindly gifted! 😌) and took the scenic route.

What started as a plan to reduce their carbon footprint quickly became an odyssey of missed connections, vintage markets, run in with a rogue dog spa, free ice cream, and a whole lot of wine. Was it smooth? Not entirely. Joyful? Abso-bloody-lutely.

📍 Part 1: London → Paris → San Sebastián → Pamplona → Madrid →Assumar via train

S2: Ep 10 - Why the UK Is Still Dumping Sewage Into Our Seas With Surfers Against Sewage 💩🏄🏼‍♀️24 Jul 202500:49:43

🚨Over 590,000 Sewage Spills in 2024?!

This week on the Green Queens Podcast, we dive into the murky reality of the UK’s sewage crisis with Dani Jordan, Director of Campaigns & Communities at Surfers Against Sewage.

From so-called “exceptional” spills in dry weather to the massive data scandal behind our polluted rivers, Dani unpacks why water companies are still getting away with it—and how surfers, swimmers, and community activists are fighting back.

Dani shares:

🤢Why the UK’s sewage system is still failing

🫶🏼The power of grassroots action

🔬How tools like the Safer Seas & Rivers Service are protecting the public

⌛️What regulators must do next

💧 If you swim, surf, paddle—or just want clean water—have a little listen!

🚨Note: This episode was recorded shortly before the release of Sir John Cunliffe's 465 report which recommended scrapping Ofwat, the economic regulator for the water industry. In response to the report, Giles Bristow, chief executive of SAS, said the review "utterly fails to prioritise public benefit over private profit". Why SaS are calling for more systemic change is discussed in this podcast.

S3:Ep 4 - The Mystery of False Autumn: Nature’s Warning and Its Solutions for a Warming World 🍂🌳02 Oct 202500:30:58

In this episode of Green Queens, Imogen Bhogal and Abbie Dewhurst step into the Carbon Garden at Kew Gardens— a new space designed to show how the carbon cycle, plants, and fungi shape our climate future. With the help of:

🌳 Joe Richomme – Garden Supervisor and project lead of the Carbon Garden

💧 Justin Moat – Senior Research Leader on carbon capture

🌿 Kevin Martin – Head of Tree Collections

They discuss why it’s not just rising temperatures, but water shortages that really put trees at risk, and how fungi beneath our feet quietly act as nature’s hidden carbon heroes. They dive into the curious phenomena of “false autumn” and summer branch drop—signs of trees struggling to cope with stress—and explain why protecting old, established trees matters so much more for storing carbon than planting new ones alone. The conversation also celebrates the benefits of “messy” gardening, showing how leaving leaves, letting grass grow, and embracing natural cycles can boost soil health and biodiversity. Above all, they encourage us to think long-term, with a 200-year vision for the landscapes of the future. Enjoy!

S3:Ep 6 - Green Sea Turtles Downgraded, A Billion Birds To Save & The Rise of Renewables! 🐢☀️23 Oct 202500:35:17

It’s officially sweater weather (OSW) — but Abbie Dewhurst has fled to the sunny climes of Portugal, while Imogen Bhogal is fully embracing OSW with a snotty nose and croaky voice to match. 💚

This week, the Green Queens are serving up a hearty dose of good news for the planet: from green sea turtle comebacks to the quiet revolution in renewable energy — plus some surprisingly simple solutions to help save a billion birds. 🐢🐦☀️

✨ In This Episode:

🍂🌰 Autumn Magic: Why this autumn’s colours are extra vibrant — and what a mast year means for squirrels, seeds, and seriously stunning trees.

🐢🌊Turtle Triumph: Green sea turtles are no longer endangered! Global conservation efforts have helped their populations bounce back after decades of decline — a massive win for wildlife.

🕊️🪟💡Saving a Billion Birds: Each year, over one billion birds die in the U.S. after colliding with glass — an invisible killer along their migration routes. But there’s hope! The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and New York’s Javits Center are proving cities can lead the change with bird-friendly glass. And at home? A few dots, decals, or even soap marks spaced two inches apart can save millions of birds every year.

☀️💨🔋The Renewable Revolution: For the first half of the year, renewables generated more electricity than coal worldwide! The UK’s powering past 50% renewable energy, and we break down why solar, wind, and battery storage are officially the cheapest (and brightest) options.

🦈💌Sustainable Business Shout-out: Meet Flora, founder of Washed Up Cards, who turns River Thames plastic into beautiful art and greeting cards — and even sculpted a shark to celebrate the surprising creatures lurking in London’s river.

S5: Ep 9 - Inside Attenborough’s Ocean: How Storytelling Drives Climate Action | With Emily Renshaw-Smith (Open Planet)01 May 202600:41:45

What if the problem isn’t climate inaction, but rather the way we are telling the story? 🌍

In this live episode of Green Queens, we sit down with Emily Renshaw-Smith, the Managing Director of Open Planet to go behind the scenes of her team's incredible productions, including the David Attenborough-narrated documentary Ocean, to unpack how storytelling serves as a vital tool for real-world climate impact.

From her professional journey through Channel 4 and Comic Relief to her current role leading one of today's most ambitious environmental media initiatives, Emily explains why data alone is insufficient to inspire change. She shares how powerful narratives can shift perspectives, influence global policy, and transform climate anxiety into meaningful action.

We also explore Open Planet’s groundbreaking open-source footage library. This platform is designed to provide creators everywhere with access to world-class natural history content, effectively democratising the ability to tell stories that truly matter.

S5: Ep 10 - The Flight-Free Travel Revolution | Cat Jones, Founder of Byway29 May 202600:48:20

If you've been hanging out with us for a while, you know we did an amazing Interrail trip last year and haven’t stopped talking about it since. Well, the travel itch is officially back, and it is entirely Cat Jones’s fault.

In this episode, we sit down with Cat, the absolute powerhouse founder of Byway; a brilliant travel tech company rewriting the rules of holidays. Think flight-free, multi-stop, gorgeous journeys over land and sea that prove the journey itself can be the absolute best part of the trip. (Goodbye airport chaos, hello dining cars and mountain views! 🏔️🍰)

Cat shares how Byway is using smart tech to fix the massive headache of planning flight-free travel, combining dynamic routing with independent, locally owned hotels, and (our personal favourite) an in-trip WhatsApp group that feels like texting your mates when things go a bit sideways.

Join us to chat about:

  • Cat’s Top 3 Magical Routes: From waking up to deer on Rannoch Moor to paddling in Lake Bled by breakfast.
  • Traveling with children: How to survive (and actually enjoy!) long train journeys with kids
  • The "Package Holiday" Rethink: Why Byway reclaimed the term to protect green travelers.
  • The Real Impact: Ditching short-haul flights and the frustrating politics behind jet fuel tax breaks.
  • Sustainable Travel Leave: The ready-made policy that gets you extra holiday days just for choosing the train. (Yes, really. Go pitch it to your boss immediately!)
