Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) ft. Heather Stewart and Ryan Luis Rodriguez21 Aug 202402:12:01

Dana and Tom with new guests Heather Stewart (@heatherjstewart) and Ryan Luis Rodriguez (One Track Mind podcast, Reels of Justice podcast) discuss the religious comedy, Life of Brian (1979): directed by Terry Jones, written by Monty Python, starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Eric Idle.

Plot Summary: Ah, splendid! Picture this, if you will: the bustling streets of ancient Judea, a land rife with political turmoil, religious fervor, and the occasional stoning. Into this chaos, on the very same night as a certain well-known savior, is born a rather unremarkable chap named Brian Cohen.

Now, Brian, through no fault of his own, is continuously mistaken for the Messiah. This hapless fellow bumbles his way through a series of increasingly ludicrous adventures. From joining the People's Front of Judea (not to be confused with the Judean People's Front—splitters!) to unintentionally starting his own religious movement, Brian's life is a whirlwind of mistaken identity, misunderstandings, and the utterly absurd.

As if that weren't enough, he's pursued by Roman centurions, swooned over by fanatical followers, and lectured by his domineering mother ("He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"). All this, while Brian desperately tries to carve out a normal life in a world that seems determined to turn him into something he most definitely is not.

So, in essence, dear friends, "Life of Brian" is a satirical romp through history, skewering sacred cows and poking fun at the foibles of humanity with the kind of irreverent wit and cheekiness that only Monty Python can deliver. Quite a lark, wouldn't you say?

Chinatown (1974) ft. Scott Cole19 Jun 202402:01:10

Dana and Tom welcome new guest, Scott Cole (Twitter-X/IG (@colecommascott) movie commentator, and occassional writer/contributor for The Movie Friends podcast.com (@moviefriendspodcast)), to the show to discuss the neo-noir classic, Chinatown (1974): directed by Roman Polanski, written by Robert Towne, starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston.

Plot Summary: Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski, is a masterful blend of noir and tragedy that stands as one of the great achievements in American cinema. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Jake Gittes, a private detective whose specialty is uncovering marital infidelities. When he is hired by a woman claiming to be Evelyn Mulwray (Diane Ladd) to investigate her husband’s suspected affair, Gittes is drawn into a labyrinth of deceit, corruption, and murder. Set against the backdrop of 1930s Los Angeles, the plot thickens as Gittes discovers the true Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he has been duped. The deeper he digs, the more he uncovers a sinister conspiracy involving water rights and the powerful land magnate Noah Cross (John Huston).

Chinatown is not just a detective story; it is a commentary on the corruption and decay that lie beneath the surface of society, a theme that remains relevant to this day. In the end, as the iconic final line suggests, "Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown," the film reminds us that some mysteries are better left unsolved, and some wounds never heal.

Avatar (2009)14 Dec 202201:13:27

Dana and Tom discuss the current highest-grossing movie of all-time in Avatar (2009): directed and written by James Cameron, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.

Plot Summary: Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a former Marine confined to a wheelchair, has been recruited to join an expedition to the moon Pandora, where corporate interests are strip-mining for a mineral worth $20 billion per kilogram on Earth. To facilitate their work, the humans use a link system that projects a person's consciousness into a hybrid of humans and Pandora's indigenous humanoids, the Na'vi. This human-Na'vi hybrid – a fully living, breathing body that resembles the Na'vi but possesses the individual human's thoughts, feelings, and personality – is known as an "avatar." Jake must work with Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), the head of the Avatar program, who is not sure of Sully’s suitability to the project, and Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), head of the mining operation’s security detail. Jake’s mission is to interact with and infiltrate the Na'vi with the hope of enlisting their help – or at least their acquiescence – in mining the ore. A beautiful Na'vi, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) saves Jake's life and eventually shows him the culture of her people. As Jake's relationship with Neytiri deepens, along with his respect for the Na'vi, he faces the ultimate test as he leads an epic conflict that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.
