In this interview I'm joined by Dr. Myles Werntz to discuss the nature of the church with special attention given to some of the significant developments in ecclesiology that occurred during the 20th century. Re-Christianizing the Episcopal Church | Fr. Ben Crosby22 Aug 202500:59:12

In this interview, I'm joined by Fr. Ben Crosby, an Episcopal priest and Ph.D. student at McGill university, to discuss the 39 articles, Anglican theology, and how to restore the Episcopal Church to its theological roots. Along the way, Fr. Ben shares the fascinating story of how liberals and conservatives have both opposed the 39 articles, whether "via media" is a good way to describe Anglicanism, and why being more Protestant makes Anglicans more Anglican. It's a fascinating discussion, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

What is the Catholic Magisterium and is it Biblical?06 Jan 202101:34:18

As an outsider looking in, the magisterium is one of the most distinctive features of Catholicism. In this video, I talk with Michael Lofton of Reason and Theology about the Catholic magisterium, what it is, and how it works. We discuss layers of authority within the magisterium, important distinctions about magisterial authority, and perhaps most importantly, Michael Lofton presents biblical and historical arguments for the Catholic magisterium.

About the host:

Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. Is Everyone Becoming Catholic/Orthodox? The Data on Religion in America (w/ Dr. Chip Rotolo)27 Jun 202500:54:05

Ever since Pew Research put out its Religious Landscape Study, people have been making claims about Christianity making a comeback. Within this, three claims in particular have stood out on the internet:
1. Young people are getting more religious.
2. Young men are becoming more religious.
3. People are flocking to traditional churches.

In this video, we put all those claims to the test as Pew Researcher, Dr. Chip Rotolo (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) unpacks the details of this study, separating fact from fiction.

In this conversation, Dr. Jordan Daniel Wood discusses the intersection of St. Maximus the Confessor's thought and the concept of universalism. He explores how Maximus's understanding of creation as incarnation challenges traditional views of time and the nature of the incarnation itself. Wood argues that the incarnation is not merely a historical event but the very logic of creation, revealing a deeper connection between God and humanity. He emphasizes the importance of scripture and personal experience in shaping Maximus's theological insights, ultimately presenting a vision of a God who desires to be in relationship with creation. In this conversation, JDW explores the implications of viewing creation as an incarnation, addressing concerns about pantheism and secularism. He discusses the ethical responsibilities that arise from this perspective, particularly in relation to how we treat the poor and the environment. The dialogue also delves into the theological implications of animals in heaven, drawing on the thoughts of Maximus. Furthermore, JDW reflects on the historical reception of Maximus's ideas and the dynamic nature of tradition in theology, emphasizing the importance of engaging with both historical and contemporary theological insights.

Before you fire off your hot takes in the comment section, the goal of this video is not to call out any individual politicians or to campaign for any given issues (not that there's anything inherently wrong in either of those things, mind you). Rather, in his book, Perry offers an interesting assessment of how old heresies are taking on new life in our political discourse.

The Dark Side of Radical Traditionalism | Kevin Nontradicath15 Jan 202501:00:12

Growing up, Traditionalist Catholicism (FSSP) was Kevin's whole life, which to many of you, might sound like paradise. After all, many of the people who watch my videos are deeply attracted to the most traditional forms of the Catholic faith. It's easy for me to understand why.

Kevin, however, has a different story to share. Rather than finding this form of Catholicism life-giving, it was the opposite. Here, he tells his story, and shares what he wishes converts knew about this Catholic subculture before diving in head first.

This video is not created to argue against any particular truth claims or convince you to go one way or the other. Instead, it's an effort to counterbalance the one way narrative online about traditional Catholicism. Whether you agree with Kevin or not, I hope you hear him out.

The Case for Liberal Protestantism | Dr. Steven Nemes26 Nov 202401:08:34

In this video, I'm joined by Dr. Steven Nemes to discuss his case for liberal Protestantism.

Dr. Nemes spent years wondering if he needed to become Catholic and leave his Protestant upbringing. He ended up rejecting the claims of the Catholic church. However, he did not stop there. He realized that the nature of his disagreements with Roman Catholicism extended beyond the institution of the church centered in Rome. These disagreements went to the core of catholic Christianity as a whole - in other words, the majority of historical Christianity. This has led to his rejection of traditionalism, hierarchy, the Trinity, and the incarnation - all of which he has written on extensively.

In this video, we discuss what Liberal Protestantism is, my objections to it, whether it can be called Christianity, and Dr. Nemes' views on the future of liberal theology.

That Time There Were Three Popes: A History of the Great Western Schism25 Oct 202500:30:02

The Great Western Schism is one of the most fascinating and dramatic stories in the history of the church. And yet, many people have never heard of it. This is a story of saints against saints, councils against popes, and rival popes vying for power. For skeptics, it's proof the emperor has no clothes. For committed Catholics, it's a reminder that the church has been through far worse in its past than in its present. For everyone, it's a story worth knowing.

Why You Should Be Protestant (Dr. Gavin Ortlund)10 Aug 202401:55:49

In this conversation, Gavin Ortlund, Ph.D., discusses the meaning of Protestantism as a renewal movement within the church. He emphasizes that Protestantism is not a rejection of other Christian traditions, but a reform and renewal effort based on the authority of Scripture. He also addresses the issue of institutional exclusivism and highlights the Protestant emphasis on the catholicity of the Church. Additionally, he explains his concerns with dogmas around the veneration of icons and the bodily assumption of Mary. The conversation explores the concepts of infallibility and authority within Protestantism, and the importance of abiding in Christ for assurance. The discussion concludes with a reflection on denominational identity and the need for Protestants to rediscover their rich historical roots.

Ulrich Zwingli: The most misunderstood reformer? (w/ Dr. Bruce Gordon)18 Nov 202301:09:42

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicity

Ulrich Zwingli, born January 1, 1484 in Switzerland, would go on to become a leading figure of the Reformation. However, just as quick was his rise to prominence as his fall from grace. After dying in battle, many of his contemporaries distanced themselves from him, and despite being contemporary with Luther, he receives only a small fraction of the attention other Reformers do in current studies of the Reformation.

Dr. Bruce Gordon, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, joins me in this episode to discuss the life and legacy of Ulrich Zwingli, which he outlines in more detail in his groundbreaking work God's Armed Prophet. Together, we explore the myriad ways Zwingli has been misunderstood, as well as why he continues to be a figure that defies easy characterization.

About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 24 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. Dialogue: Orthodox Priest and Catholic Apologist Discuss the Papacy and Ecclesiology23 Sep 202301:30:43

In this video, Orthodox priest, Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck, and Catholic Apologist, Erick Ybarra, discuss the papacy. However, this isn't your usual battle of proof texts. Instead, we dive deep into questions of ecclesiology which get to the root of the disagreement between Catholics and Orthodox. Throughout the course of the discussion, Fr. Laurent and Erick tackle questions like:
1. Did Catholics and Orthodox EVER agree on the papacy?
2. What does Roman primacy mean?
3. What can we learn from the Council of Serdica?
4. When does papal primacy turn into papal supremacy?
5. What's the nature of the Church?

Fr Laurent Cleenewerck is an Orthodox priest serving as rector of St Innocent Orthodox Church in Eureka, California, in the Orthodox Church in America diocese of the West. He is among other things a graduate of the St Sergius Institute in Paris and current teaches theology for the Ukrainian Catholic University and for Euclid University. He is the author of His Broken Body: Understanding and Healing the Schism between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, and the editor of the Eastern/Greek Orthodox New Testament.

You can find Fr. Laurent's book here: https://amzn.to/3sFWBNK

Erick Ybarra is a revert to the Catholic faith from Protestantism and has spent over a decade studying the doctrinal nature of divisions that exist within Christendom particularly between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, as well as Protestantism. He is the author of the recent book, Melchizedek and the Last Supper. He is a speaker that has appeared on various social media outlets but is known most especially for his contribution as a co-host of YouTube’s Reason and Theology and his own channel, Classical Christian Thought. Why a Catholic Philosopher Became Orthodox | Dr. Joshua Sijuwade13 Oct 202501:13:36

In this interview, Dr. Joshua Sijuwade returns to the channel, but this time from a different church. About a year ago, he and I discussed his a priori argument for the papacy. This time, he's sharing what ultimately led him to change his mind on the papacy and become Orthodox. The conversation focuses on the structure of the church, and whether Catholics or Orthodox have retained the church structure of the first millennium.

In a future episode, we may dive into the differences in the doctrine of God between the East and West. If you'd like to see that, let us know!
