Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Cutgiver
lundi 12 août 2024 • Duration 01:11:54
Zack Snyder has a reputation as a Director’s Cut director: but what does that actually mean? And what happens when he’s given the chance to simultaneously make a Directors Cut and a ‘theatrical’ cut that will never go to theatres?
CONTENT WARNING: This episode discusses fictional depictions of sexual assault and sexual violence from 44:55 - 47:28

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Compromise of Filmmaking
dimanche 28 juillet 2024 • Duration 01:05:40
Zack Snyder first pitched the idea Seven Samurai in Space when he was in college. In 2012, he pitched it to Kathleen Kennedy as his way of “fixing” Star Wars. In 2023, Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire was released on Netflix.
This is the story of how one idea becomes ten hours worth of movie.

Striking Out: South Park
Season 3 · Episode 6
dimanche 18 juin 2023 • Duration 56:55
The South Park episode Canada on Strike first aired in April 2008 - a “biting” “satire” released well after the Writers Strike had left the news cycle, and one of many media pieces that helped cement the legend that the entire strike had been about The Internet. But one of the many issues that the WGA had brought to the table was the very reason that the South Park team were so annoyed with the Guild in the first place - while the Guild were on strike, South Park and most of the animation industry were still working. Because animation writers are not covered by the Writers Guild.
The WGA wanted jurisdiction over animation in their next contract. But that was an even harder ask than Reality TV, since animation writing was already covered by The Animation Guild, or IATSE Local 839.

Striking Out: America's Next Top Model
Season 3 · Episode 5
dimanche 11 juin 2023 • Duration 56:06
In 2006, more than a year before the Writers Strike, twelve producers of America’s Next Top Model walked off their job to demand a new contract: as Writers protected by the Writers Guild of America. The production company refused to bargain with the WGA, worried it would set a dangerous precedent by giving Reality TV producers higher wages, residuals and writer credits. The WGA, on the other hand, were determined to set that precedent.
The Top Model Strike was a disaster.
Reality TV was one of the most complicated issues during the 07/08 Writers Strike - because while the WGA demanded blanket coverage of Reality TV Writers, the TV Networks denied reality TV even had writers and filled their schedules with non-union reality TV shows to ride out the strike. And while the WGA had failed to unionise Reality TV workers, the Director’s Guild of America had already been moderately successful, and weren’t asking for it in their next contract - making them a much easier group for the studios to negotiate with.

Striking Out: Heroes
Season 3 · Episode 4
dimanche 28 mai 2023 • Duration 01:10:06
In 2005, Tim Kring took a 5 hour walk with his old friend Jeph Loeb, and pitched him the pilot episode of his new show - Heroes.
Inspired by a structural writing challenge, a desire to see good in ordinary people and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, Heroes was one of the biggest new shows of 2006. By the end of 2007, it had all come crashing down. The Writer’s Strike is often held responsible for Heroes’s demise, but as usual, there’s a lot more to the story.
Content Warning:
Les Moonves is alleged to have sexually assaulted more than a dozen women since the 1980s. Both CBS executives and LAPD police officers were involved in an attempt to cover-up at least one allegation.

Striking Out: The Office
Season 3 · Episode 3
dimanche 21 mai 2023 • Duration 01:04:33
In 2005, an American adaption of a UK cringe-com written by a former Simpsons writer became an unexpected hit on iTunes. So despite middling ratings, the show was given a second season and a second chance.
It went on to become the defining sitcom of a generation, and one of the most streamed series of all time.
Through every early development of online content, The Office was right there, riding the wave of technology and culture trends. And when the Writers Guild of America went on strike in 2007, one of the guild’s biggest battlegrounds was The Internet - and The Office writers were there on the picket lines, fighting for the future they had forged.

Striking Out: Quantum of Solace (Part 2)
Season 3 · Episode 2
dimanche 14 mai 2023 • Duration 54:16
Six months of pre-production. Six months of principal photography.
Six weeks in the edit.
Quantum of Solace has long been seen as a victim of the Writers Strike. But the strike was just one of many, many roadblocks that the film blissfully drove straight through.
Striking Out is a new series of Going Rogue about the 07/08 Writers Guild of America strike, exploring the issues of the strike by looking at the films and TV shows affected by it.
CONTENT WARNING: In 2023 Paul Haggis lost a civil court case and was ordered to pay $7.5million to a woman who accused him of assault. Four other woman testified during the court case. Haggis denies the accusations.

Season 3 · Episode 1
dimanche 7 mai 2023 • Duration 57:26
In 2005, Daniel Craig was announced as the new James Bond. On the same day, producer Michael G Wilson mentioned that work had already started on Craig's second Bond film.
That film would eventually become Quantum of Solace. And it would be remembered less as a film and more as a casualty of the 2007 Writers Strike. But how much did the strike really affect Quantum of Solace?

Going Solo IV: Howard
Season 2 · Episode 4
dimanche 5 février 2023 • Duration 01:00:29
On a dark summer night on the set of American Graffiti, Ron Howard asked George Lucas what film he wanted to do next. Lucas was shy with details, but he said it was sort of a Buck Rogers film with Stanley Kubrick special effects, but really, really fast.
Both Howard and Lucas would go onto wildly successful directorial careers, but while George Lucas was stuck in a galaxy far far away, Howard became a journeyman, directing all styles, genres and budgets. When Solo: A Star Wars Story needed a steady pair of hands to take over and get the now director-less film onto screens in just 11 months, Howard was one of the few directors with the experience, technical skill and clout to pull it off.
Howard’s version of Solo was always going to be a compromise. But by picture lock, very little of anyone’s vision remained. Join us for the breakneck conclusion of Going Solo.
