Episode 237 1/2: Hobbes Has Something To Say01 Oct 202400:11:45

Hello, Podwalkers. Today we do not have a full episode. Today instead Hobbes wanted to sign on to talk about the recent situations involving the RC and EDH/Commander. This covers the topics of Emotions vs Behavior and Grief. We highly recommend checking out this previous episode with Ryan Sainio. Hobbes also mentions Emotion Wheels which can be a great tool.

Welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast and the celebration of 6 years of doing this show (first episode was posted 6/18/2018 but we had to re-record it after we lost it... so we'd TECHNICALLY been around...). The goblins gather to celebrate 6 years for the podcast and to talk about what the cast stands for and the major recurring themes that permeate the show. Along with this they provide some episode recommendations for those different topics.

Episode 143: Creative Content Creation w/ DeQuan06 Apr 202200:41:29

Welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast and welcome back to our special guest DeQuan Watson (one of the hosts of the Color of Magic podcast). In part one of a two part series Hobbes and DeQuan discuss Content Creation and the need for Intentionality and Marketing. When DeQuan met with the cast back in 2020 he had moved to full time content creation and continues in this role. We approached DeQuan after the SCG announcement cutting back on their competitive content in particular. While this is more of the focus of Pt 2 (sorry DeQuan hi-jacked the show!) today we look at ways for content creators to expand their audiences and improve their product!

Episode 142: Jodah's Mirror and the Art of Coping Ahead30 Mar 202200:51:06

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! This week have an excited announcement related to a partnership with ZenCastr! We have been using them to record the cast and you can now get a discount (details below) if you want to use them for your podcast needs.

For today's topic we have dug deep for our lore and are returning to the Dark to discuss Jodah (who apparently was "chased" by "Goblins" and fell into some fountain giving him long life) and his Magical Mirror. This Mirror has had a lot of uses but most importantly in the early days of his long life it allowed Jodah to store his memories as a way to cope with the grief and despair that he experienced. This sets us up nicely to bring back up (thanks Chase!!) the topic of Coping Ahead from Dialectical Behavior Therapy!

Episode 141: The Technology of Teletherapy16 Mar 202201:11:03

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! This week we are returning to Kamigawa to talk about Technology on the Plane. Inspired from the first meeting between Kaito and the Futurist Katsumasa and their discussion on who has access to technology Hobbes started to think about his own job as a therapist and how this has shifted with the rise of Teletherapy. The hosts' discussion ranges from simply access to these services to the pros and cons of both providing and receiving telehealth services!

Episode 140: Breakfast with the Color Pie02 Mar 202200:59:28

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! And we are back with our 7th Episode Using The Color Pie to discuss one of our top 3 Topics (Food). With each episode we find ourselves refining our Color Pie Theory for Food/Cooking and today's episode will continue that "refinement". Today we take on the American Breakfast... This stemmed from a discussion of excess and Hobbes's belief that every food would basically include Black. Let us know what you think. Also Hobbes would like to apologize for the audio. Something was causing interference with his mic (which appears to be fixed) but this had already been recorded. We hope it does not detract too much...

Episode 139: We Don't Talk About the Phyrexians16 Feb 202200:38:59

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Back in Episode 109 and Episode 110 Alex and Hobbes were lucky enough to be able to discuss the Killian Lu story with Michelle and Ryan (fist time guest!). A lot of what was discussed then drew heavily from this video by Eugene Yang on Anti-Asian Hate and addressed concerns about the way the story had been told. At the end of those episodes Ryan had mentioned the rumors about the Return to Kamigawa.

Since then there had been apprehension. What would Kamigawa bring? How would it handle Asian Representation in a Cyberpunk World set in a futuristic Kamigawa. So we again reached out to Michelle and Ryan, and while we did this world building video dropped (please go watch if you haven't yet). Last week we covered the video, this week we need to dive a little deeper into the story. The Phyrexians are back in a clearer way than they were on Kaldheim, but we still don't know what is going on. And unfortunately this type of story is not something that Alex in particular enjoys (we cover why today). This leads us to an important discussion about what is coming (both in the story and perhaps with the cast.

Episode 137:Melthos? I hardly know those!26 Jan 202201:02:05

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! Taya is back with us!!! In case you missed she visited the cast way back in Episode 115. Hobbes and Alex previously took on Psychographics/Aesthetics when it comes to Magic Players and that episode introduced the concept of the hybrid Melvin/Vorthos player... the Melthos . Today we dive deeper into what this could mean with examples that we feel both hit and miss this aesthetic. Today's episode mentions a lot of works previously done especially by Mark Rosewater so we are including links to these .

Episode 136: Mindfully Entering 202205 Jan 202201:04:45

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! This week's episode is a return to the topics of Resolutions and Goal Setting. The last time we talked about this was in January of 2020 (we were naive Goblins at the time) and Alex introduced Hobbes and Chase to a method for resolution setting. Around that time Alex had found an amazing Planning Journal and recently bought Hobbes a copy for the Holidays! In today's episode Alex takes Hobbes through it and we also look at how this method incorporates Mindfulness. Here's the link to the method and an online resource!

Welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast and our final episode for May (aka Mental Health Awareness Month). Sure it's June but Goblins are gonna be Goblins. We are returning to a topic that Alex introduced way back in Episode 84 on  Self-Compassion and Self-Care especially in the era of a Pandemic.

Today all three hosts are here to talk about the struggles we have with being compassionate towards ourselves, even when we are compassionate to those around us. We look at what self-compassion is (and also what it is not). We hope you all enjoy!

This fantastic book is a visual history with plenty of amazing artwork. Perfect for an audio podcast to talk about right?? No Episode: Babies are the Worst29 Oct 202100:10:32

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to not an episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! Instead this week we just have a brief update on where we are and where we are going to be coming up. Hobbes has been busy prepping for the arrival of a new little Monster (as named by his Goblin Daughter Gwen). Alex's work situation has been in a state of change and we are entering a busy season for him. Not shockingly, for both hosts this also means Mental Health and Wellness has been affected. We are also entering the phase of Holidays which in the past has meant difficulty with putting out new material. We have some things planned (including a guest that we think will really get people excited). So sit back and listen to this not episode by Alex.

Again we would like to state that Black Lives Matter (with a link to where you can offer support both monetary and not).

We also are proud to have partnered with Grinding Coffee Co a black, LGBT+ affiliated and owned, coffee business that is aimed at providing coffee to gamers. You can read more about their mission here. You can use our partner code for discounted coffee!

Episode 129: Part 2 with Anthony Waters!20 Oct 202100:49:23

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast!

cw, tw: suicide, suicidal thoughts, depression

Even though we have passed the months of May and September when we have our heaviest focus on Mental Health, we could not pass up a chance to collaborate with another fantastic guest to discuss Mental Health. Today is Part 2 and picks up where we left off last week starting an explicit discussion of Depression. We cannot say thank you enough to Anthony Waters for joining for this and for his willingness to be so open with the hosts. This is probably the most raw/emotional episode we have done and we hope that you feel comfortable listening. As always we have resources below for anyone struggling with mental health concerns.

Episode 128: Part 1 with Anthony Waters!13 Oct 202100:53:24

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! Even though we have passed the months of May and September when we have our heaviest focus on Mental Health, we could not pass up a chance to collaborate with another fantastic guest to discuss Mental Health. Today is Part 1 (and a warning now that Part 2 will definitely be a heavier, important, necessary discussion) in which we mainly talk about Anthony's history with Magic the Gathering. This includes ways that the community and artists interact allowing a dialogue between creator and fan in a way that is rarely seen. The conversations ranges all over the place (we're so sure you are shocked) and ends with us just introducing next week's more direct discussion of Mental Health. We cannot say thank you enough to Anthony Waters for joining for this and will have much more to say about him in next week's episode.

Episode 126: The Heroic Sacrifice29 Sep 202101:18:07

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast!

cw, tw: suicide, suicidal thoughts, depression

Back in our forty-seventh and forty-eighth episodes, Chase joined us to discuss how Magic: the Gathering has handled suicide and suicidal thoughts in its stories – from Gideon Jura, to Chandra Nalaar, to the Primeval dragon Darigaaz. In an article on our website, too, previous host Joe explored some of these concepts and how they were handled in War of the Spark.

This is a sensitive topic that is extremely important to the members of the cast, and we feel like it's necessary to examine the depictions of these mental health crises in popular media. We hope those episodes can be educational for those who have not experienced these thoughts and feelings, and comfort and a resource for those who have.

For today's episode we return to that topic while also looking at a narrative technique (so we're joined again by Reinhardt!!): The Hero's Sacrifice. This is a story element that can be done well and used effectively and also can fall pretty flat. We want to look at this topic and also leave Suicide Awareness Month with another focus on how this device may play out in Magic and in other popular media.

We also are proud to have partnered with Grinding Coffee Co a black, LGBT+ affiliated and owned, coffee business that is aimed at providing coffee to gamers. You can read more about their mission here. You can use our partner code for discounted coffee!

Hello Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Today on the cast Alex sits down with returning guest Reinhardt Suarez to talk about the direction that Magic Story has taken over the years and the way this has been structured. There is a focus not only on where story has been but where it can go. It’s a heavy craft-centric episode, we hope you enjoy it!

Episode 124: Welcome to the Dungeon (Warden)15 Sep 202101:01:06

Hello, Podwalkers and welcome back! We're back for the second way in a row and we are continuing to honor the mission of the show and taking care of ourselves. This is extra relevant as September is Suicide Awareness Month (links below are always in show notes but want to highlight them). Also we wanted to use this opportunity to encourage more people to come and join our Discord, where we continue to have amazing discussions and an amazing community that was active even during this break!

Last week Alex discussed Zada and her allies and his Zada Deck. This led to a lot of discussion of community (and 1DH as a format!). This week we have another Goblin Profile (with a deck to go with it!). This week is Grenzo, our favorite Dungeon Warden. Hobbes takes us through his deck... of ALL ARTIST PROOFS!! What is an artist proof? How do you get into collecting them? Well guess you will need to listen...

On another new note (phew we have a lot to say when we've been gone a month)... We have joined The Fireside Alliance. From their main page: "An independent media network and a progressive community of progressive communities"

Episode 123: That Really Grinds My Hedrons08 Sep 202100:58:23

Hello, Podwalkers and welcome back! We've been gone with new episodes for over a month (outside of a brief update). And we missed you, a lot. But we also were honoring the mission of the show and taking care of ourselves. This is extra relevant as September is Suicide Awareness Month (links below are always in show notes but want to highlight them). Also we wanted to use this opportunity to encourage more people to come and join our Discord, where we continue to have amazing discussions and an amazing community that was active even during this break!

Now on to this episode!! It's a Goblin Profile... of a Goblin we have very Lore for. But that's never stopped us and it definitely did not stop Alex from creating a deck around our Profilee. It's the Amazing Zada and her Targeted Army! There's a lot of discussion about community in today's episode as well as information on a different way to play Commander.

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! And we are back with our Fifth Episode Using The Color Pie to discuss one of our top 3 Topics (Food). With each episode we find ourselves refining our Color Pie Theory for Food/Cooking and today's episode will continue that "refinement". In particular there is a lot more exploration of the Color Pie as it relates to food preparation versus food consumption. And yes... we talk snacks including this important one!

Episode 118: I hadn't really thought of that16 Jun 202101:10:51

Hello Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Today on the cast Alex sits down with returning guest Reinhardt Suarez to talk about two pieces of Magic fiction that Reinhardt wrote. Reinhardt was on the show back in episode 78 to discuss what Science Fiction in the Multiverse has looked like to date, and potential future directions. Since that time Reinhardt has worked with Wizards on pieces specifically for Strixhaven!! Discussion today looks at his experiences working with Wizards while writing those two pieces, and about writing in general. As usual the goblins meander through a number of topics, including the value of editors, dealing with imposter syndrome as a writer (or creative in general) and some differences between self publishing and traditional publishing. It’s a heavy craft-centric episode, we hope you enjoy it!

Reinhardt can be found at: https://www.thereinhardtexperience.com/

Jeff had been traveling around from Magicfest to Magicfest prior to the Pandemic and all of a sudden (like for many of us) this greatly changed. So join us for the final episode of Mental Health Awareness Month!

Episode 115: Taya Transcends Narset and Autism19 May 202101:29:08

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the plan is for all the episodes this month to relate to important topics within Mental Health. We are also participating (along with other excellent creators) in #MentalHealthMtG and attempting to raise money for MH Organizations!!

In today's episode we have the fortune to be joined by the fantastic force known as Taya from the Loregoyfs (one of our favorite casts, though as a reminder they are on hiatus). Today we are discussing the character of Narset, who has been identified as Neurodivergent (see Doug Beyer Question, and the story "The Great Teacher's Student" by Kimberly Kreines). This episode focuses on Autism, with a discussion of Taya's experience as an Autistic Transwoman. We delve into organizations that have been harmful towards autistics as well as organizations that are better advocates and good resources (such as the Autism Self Advocacy Network). We discuss the harm of therapies such as ABA as well as how there are therapy options that might be helpful to autistic individuals.

Episode 114: Chase is back to talk Burnout!12 May 202101:04:33

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the plan is for all the episodes this month to relate to important topics within Mental Health. We are also participating (along with other excellent creators) in #MentalHealthMtG and attempting to raise money for MH Organizations!!

In today's episode we have the return of Chase!!!! She helps Hobbes and Alex revisit a topic from way back in Episode 30: Nissa and Burnout. The hosts talk about their experiences with this topic as well as the nature of Burnout during a Pandemic. This again is a tough topic given that the first step is awareness that Burnout is even occurring. The hosts discuses some ideas on how to do this and ways to practice things such as self-compassion! As a reminder you can find links to MH Resources below.

Episode 113: Mental Health Awareness with ALK Alters05 May 202101:23:10

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the plan is for all the episodes this month to relate to important topics within Mental Health. We are also participating (along with other excellent creators) in #MentalHealthMtG and attempting to raise money for MH Organizations!!

cw, tw: suicide, suicidal thoughts, depression, self-harm

In today's episode we are joined by ALK Alters to discuss his experience with Mental Health Care (both from the standpoint of outpatient and inpatient). ALK candidly discusses his experience with being hospitalized and what this looked like for him. Our hope is that by discussing these topics we can help to combat stigma and to also be frank about the full spectrum of MH Care.

This is a sensitive topic that is extremely important to the members of the cast, and we feel like it's necessary to examine the depictions of these mental health crises in popular media. We hope this episode can be educational for those who may be wondering what a hospitalization may look like. What is discussed here is based on the experience of our guest (and Hobbes's work in inpatient settings). There are links below to several resources.

Episode 112: Things That Make You Go Squee28 Apr 202100:53:24

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Did you know that we have a whole series based around Profiles about Goblins? Apparently neither did we as we have only really Profiled Krenko and Slobad so far... So we felt we needed to rectify this by talking about one of our favorite Goblins (and the winner of Mark Rosewater's Head to Head of Famous Goblins) Squee. Did you know a lot about Squee? We didn't and when we went to look we were kind of saddened by the amount of Squee Lore that can easily be found. In fact his MtG Pedia entry is a single paragraph. So... what do we know about Squee (shout out to Jay Anelli and his amazing book you should go buy)? Let's explore that as the hosts tangent from Squee's Hidden Super Power to talking about how he was done dirty in our return to Dominaria. Hopefully we have not seen the last of the Goblin who rose to the rank of Nabob and is now Immortal. Oh also the Return of Squee/Bolas Buddy Cop and the amazing art of Tappy!

Episode 111: Poring over Pages with Morgan21 Apr 202101:00:56

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! This week we really are going back to school with our own Master of all things Libraries. We're of course talking about returning guest (it's been awhile...) Morgan!! She previously was on way back in episode 10 and 11 which started out as musings on literature in Magic and delved deeper into curation. With a plethora of new books to talk about (no really go look at her thread here) we invited Morgan back on to build off of her previous appearance. Her and Alex break down each school on Strixhaven and examine their relationship (or perhaps lack of relationship) with the books.

Episode 110: Killian Lu with Michelle and Ryan Pt 215 Apr 202100:50:32

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Last week's episode was part one inspired by the story of Killian Lu that had been alluded to so far and drew heavily on two very important threads about this (here and here) especially as it leans into harmful stereotypes. This is part two of this important discussion led by Michelle (welcome back friend!) and Ryan (fist time guest!). In pt 1 of our conversation with them we focused on the story of Killian so far, the Myth of the Model Minority, as well as the idea of Tiger Parenting. A lot of what is discussed then and again today also draws heavily from this video by Eugene Yang on Anti-Asian Hate. Part 2 picks up the conversation with what this representation means and hope for where things can go.

Episode 109: Killian Lu with Michelle and Ryan Pt 107 Apr 202100:53:42

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! After last week's discussion at the start of the last episode the hosts had briefly discussed the story of Killian Lu that had been alluded to so far and drew heavily on two very important threads about this (here and here) especially as it leans into harmful stereotypes. After recording last week's episode we reached out to Michelle (welcome back friend!) and Ryan (fist time guest!) to see if they were willing to discuss this further. In pt 1 of our conversation with them we focus on the story of Killian so far, the Myth of the Model Minority, as well as the idea of Tiger Parenting. A lot of what is discussed today also draws heavily from this video by Eugene Yang on Anti-Asian Hate.

Episode 108: Who put their school into my guild?31 Mar 202101:08:49

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Today Hobbes and Alex had set out to talk about the Schools of Strixhaven. The intention was to have a very clear discussion about how use of short hands (in this case the Guild Names) for two color pairs could be facing a paradigm shift. We've discussed on the show previously about how Izzet does not equal UR. Now with the introduction of named Schools that appear very different than their Ravnica Counterparts we could see a reframe of how to talk about color pairs. Also there's a fun thread to check out on this

That had been the full intention. But prior to the episode coming out some more "story" came out about students from the schools. In particular the story of Killian Lu was alluded to and as you can see in these two threads there were a lot of thoughts about this (here and here) especially as it leans into harmful stereotypes. While this is a larger topic (spoiler alert, we're planning to address it in a whole episode) we did start out today's episode by acknowledging it.

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Today Hobbes sat down with one of the newest members of the Commander Advisory Group (CAG) to discuss this new role. This is Gregory Sablan who is Active Duty Military. We discuss everything from the representation of the military in Magic, to his new role, to the altering of Magic Cards (check out the site he runs on FB). We are excited to start this discussion about service members (and veterans) who play magic and how that voice is being heard by the CAG and RC!

We do manage to keep on topic early on as we discuss her upcoming Charity Commander Spectacular in aid of TransLifeline which will be 3/13/21 and Hobbes will be stopping by for some MtGO Commander (there's a lot of other really cool people involved but you'll have to listen). With each episode we find ourselves refining our Color Pie Theory for Food/Cooking and today's episode will continue that "refinement". Now we also realized that language is interesting which means we went down the Rabbit Hole of "What is a Sandwich?" which led us to a hilarious article that we mention from the Minnesota Law Review.
