GLP-1 After Gastric Bypass and What You Need to Know w/ Dr. Marilyn Tan
After gastric bypass, some people make so much of their own GLP-1 that their blood sugar rockets after a meal and then crashes, and the juice or glucose tabs meant to rescue them can restart the whole cycle. Stanford endocrinologist Dr. Marilyn Tan explains post-bariatric hypoglycemia, a condition many patients live with for years before anyone names it, and whether GLP-1 medications make sense after surgery for weight regain. Then she shares phase 3 results for avexitide, an investigational drug that works in the opposite direction from the GLP-1 medications everyone is talking about.
**IN THIS EPISODE** - Hypoglycemia vs. hyperglycemia in plain language, including what "level 3" low blood sugar means - What your body's own GLP-1 does after you eat, and why gastric bypass and sleeve surgery amplify it - Why diabetes can resolve within days of surgery, before the weight comes off - Whether GLP-1 medications are safe to use after bariatric surgery for weight regain - What post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH) is, who tends to get it, and why it often shows up six months or more after surgery - The spike-then-crash pattern one to three hours after a carb-heavy meal - Why the usual low blood sugar advice can backfire for PBH, and what helps stabilize instead - The strict PBH diet (about 30 grams of carbs per meal, 15 per snack) and how it can tip into malnutrition - Why PBH is underdiagnosed, and the new ICD-10 diagnosis code - Inside the phase 3 LUCIDITY trial of avexitide, a GLP-1 blocker that is not FDA approved - What GLP-1 agonists do and don't do for people who already have PBH - What's next for avexitide and who else it may help
**ABOUT THE GUEST** Dr. Marilyn Tan, MD, FACE, FACP, is double board certified in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine. She is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and Chief of the Endocrine Clinic at Stanford Health Care. Her clinical focus is outpatient and inpatient diabetes management, and her research includes diabetes and post-bariatric hypoglycemia. She is also actively involved in resident and fellow education and mentorship.

How to Eat Out and Travel on a GLP-1 Without Guilt w/ Holly Larson, RD
Does a dinner out or a big trip ever feel like it could undo your progress on a GLP-1? Registered dietitian Holly Larson joins Ana to explain why a GLP-1 is a tool, not a diet, and how to enjoy restaurants and vacations without feeling terrible the next day. You'll learn how to read a menu, what to do with your medication when you travel, and the one word that tells you diet culture is doing the talking.
**IN THIS EPISODE** - Why a GLP-1 is a tool, not another restrictive diet - How to spot the "should" voice and talk back to it - Ordering at a special-occasion restaurant: protein, appetizers as mains, and the foods most likely to cause the "icks" - Being mindful (not rigid) with bread baskets, alcohol, and fancy coffee drinks - Everyday restaurant eating: 25 to 30 grams of protein and plenty of fiber - Continuing or pausing your dose for a trip, and why that decision belongs with your prescriber - Traveling with your pen: insulin cooler cases, carry-on only, TSA, and international limits - Planning your vacation meals around the one you're most excited about - Packing for hydration and GI comfort: electrolytes, prunes, and backup medications

Improve Body Composition on a GLP-1 With Minimal Strength Training w/ Andrew Menechian
If the scale has stalled or you're worried about losing muscle on a GLP-1, that number may not be telling you the whole story. Fitness coach and competitive powerlifter Andrew Menechian explains why body composition matters more than your weight or BMI, how to set a protein target that actually fits your body, and the minimum strength training it takes to hold on to muscle. You'll also hear why he thinks cutting calories lower and lower backfires, and the diet-break approach he uses instead.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- What body composition means, and why two people at the same weight can look completely different - Why BMI misses people who are "skinny fat" and labels muscular athletes as obese - Beginner gains: why people new to strength training can build muscle and lose fat at the same time - The two things that protect muscle on a GLP-1: protein and resistance training - How to set a protein target based on lean body mass instead of total body weight - How much strength training it takes to maintain muscle versus build it - Why training first thing in the morning makes the habit easier to keep - Simple options for older adults and people with injuries or physical limitations - Muscle first or fat loss first when you're already at a healthy weight - Metabolic adaptation, reverse dieting, and his diet-break strategy for plateaus
**ABOUT THE GUEST**
Andrew Menechian is an online health coach and head of fitness at Fit Commit, with about 15 years of coaching experience. What Your GLP-1 Is Doing for Your Heart Beyond Weight Loss w/ Dr. Sirisha Vadali
Most people think of a GLP-1 as a weight loss medication, but for your heart, the story starts before the scale moves much at all. Board-certified cardiologist and lipidologist Dr. Sirisha Vadali explains what the research shows about GLP-1s and cardiovascular risk, the simple routine she starts her patients on, and what she monitors along the way. You'll also hear why she doesn't recommend a GLP-1 for family history alone, and about one genetic cholesterol marker that diet and exercise can't change, a lab she says everyone should have checked once in their lifetime.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- How GLP-1s went from diabetes drugs to heart protection, with or without diabetes - Why some heart benefit appears before major weight loss, and why no one knows exactly how yet - Who GLP-1s are currently indicated for in cardiovascular risk reduction, and why semaglutide (Wegovy) is the one with outcomes data so far - Why muscle mass, protein, and strength training belong in every GLP-1 plan - Dr. Vadali's simple phase one: 100 grams of protein (30 to 40 grams in the morning), 25 grams of fiber, water, and strength training twice a week at home - Watching blood pressure, heart rate, hydration, and kidney function on a GLP-1 - Fatigue and low motivation after the shot: what to rule out first - Whether family history alone is a reason to start a GLP-1 - The heart labs she checks, including Lp(a), ApoB, hs-CRP, and a coronary calcium score - What Lp(a) is, why it's a one-time lifetime screening, and the treatments expected in the next few years - A word of caution on buying unapproved triple agonists online - Simple longevity habits: sleep, stress, walking after meals, and the 80/20 approach - Why hunger coming back isn't a reason to panic

Oral GLP-1 Pill for Weight Maintenance: A Dietitian's Real Results w/ Whitney Black, MS RD
A daily GLP-1 pill sounds like an easy way to maintain your weight loss, but what happens when it doesn't work like the shot did? Registered dietitian Whitney Black, who lives with type 1 diabetes, shares what happened when she switched from Zepbound to Foundayo (orforglipron) for maintenance, and why she went back after two months. You'll hear how her fullness cues, blood sugar, and insulin needs changed, and what she tells clients about weight regain. The surprise wasn't the food noise. GLP-1 Muscle Loss: 3 Simple Tests to Check Your Strength w/ Mark Hamrick
What can getting out of a chair tell you about your muscle health? Ana Reisdorf, Registered Dietitian and GLP-1 user, joins muscle and bone researcher Mark Hamrick to explore staying strong during GLP-1 weight loss, perimenopause, and menopause. You'll learn what three simple assessments can reveal about physical function, and why muscle size alone doesn't tell the whole story.
Mark explains the differences between muscle mass, quality, strength, and power, and how they connect to everyday movement and healthy aging. Ana shares her own assessment results and asks whether her regular exercise routine is enough. They also discuss bone density, fall risk, and finding an approach to exercise that works when pain or physical limitations get in the way.

GLP-1s and Menopause: Is It the Medication or Your Hormones? w/ Sharon Lemoine MSN, ARNP
Poor sleep, mood changes, low energy, and new weight around the midsection can be easy to blame on aging or GLP-1 treatment alone. In this episode, Ana Reisdorf and Sharon Lemoine explore how hormone changes, thyroid function, insulin resistance, muscle loss, and lifestyle can overlap, and what a more complete evaluation may include. You’ll learn what to look for in a hormone-informed provider, why protein and muscle monitoring matter when using a GLP-1, and why a “normal” test result may not tell the whole story.

GLP-1 Mental Health: What Weight Loss Can't Fix w/ Tracey Yokas
A GLP-1 can quiet food noise, but it may not quiet the voice saying you’re lazy, failing, or still not good enough. Ana talks with author, artist, mental health advocate, and fellow GLP-1 user Tracey Yokas about how decades of dieting, body shame, and learned family patterns can follow us even when the medication is working. You’ll learn how to recognize action driven by shame, build a more compassionate response through therapy, journaling, art, and support, and understand why the discomfort you expect weight loss to erase may need a different kind of healing.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- How being placed on a diet at age 11 shaped Tracey’s relationship with food and her body - How unhealthy patterns around food and self-worth can pass through families - What her family’s experience with disordered eating taught her about healing - How therapy helped Tracey recognize the role of trauma and self-blame - Why awareness is only the first step toward changing an old pattern - How to tell the difference between action driven by shame and action rooted in care - Why rest does not have to be earned - What changed when GLP-1 medication quieted Tracey’s food noise - Why frustration, urgency, and old self-criticism resurfaced even while the medication was working - How therapy, journaling, meditation, art, and trusted relationships can provide a safe place to begin

Why the Same GLP-1 Dose Feels Worse Next Week w/ Dr. Ian Ellis
Why can the same GLP-1 shot feel fine one week and make eating or side effects so much worse the next? In this episode, Ana talks with Dr. Ian Justl Ellis about the difference between the standard doses of GLP-1 and the medicine still in your body, why the standard four-week ladder keeps that level climbing, and how to think about a dose you can actually live on, including maintenance and travel.
**IN THIS EPISODE** - Why a dose and your medication level are not the same thing - How a long half-life makes week two on the same dose feel stronger - Why the standard every-four-weeks ladder keeps restarting the climb - What a livable sweet spot feels like: some hunger, enough protein, no side effects - Why a plateau after appetite is controlled may not mean “go up” - How changing frequency, not just milligrams, can flatten end-of-week hunger - Maintenance, travel, and cycling on and off without flying blind - Why so many people quit around week five
**ABOUT THE GUEST** Dr. Ian Ellis is a physician and the founder of Voafit, a platform focused on individualized GLP-1 care and precision dosing. Drawing from both his clinical background and his own personal experience with obesity and Ozempic, Dr. Ellis developed an approach centered on bloodstream levels rather than dose alone to help reduce side effects, improve adherence, and create better long-term outcomes for patients. He is passionate about making obesity treatment more personalized, effective, and humane.

Can Your Natural Hunger Hormones Help After GLP-1s? w/ Sarah Kennedy
What happens to hunger and food noise when someone lowers their GLP-1 dose or stops taking the medication?
In this episode, Ana Reisdorf talks with Calocurb founder and CEO Sarah Kennedy about a unique supplement designed to support appetite regulation by stimulating the body’s natural satiety hormones.

GLP-1 Coverage: Why Employers Are Dropping Access, and What Comes Next w/ Jay Bregman
Losing access to a GLP-1 can happen even when treatment is working exactly as intended. A lower BMI, an insurance change, or an employer facing open-ended costs can suddenly turn a prescription into a maze of denials, prior authorizations, and unexpected expenses.
In this episode, Ana Reisdorf speaks with Jay Bregman, founder and CEO of Andel, about why traditional insurance struggles to cover high-demand medications and how direct-to-employer purchasing could offer another path. Jay explains how fixed employer contributions can make GLP-1 benefits more predictable, why he believes prior authorizations add unnecessary costs, and what patients can do when their coverage is at risk.
They also discuss Medicare access, losing coverage after successful weight loss, options for self-employed people, compounded medications, future GLP-1 competition, and whether access can become more equitable.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- Why GLP-1 demand creates problems for traditional insurance - How pharmaceutical middlemen affect medication pricing and access - What direct-to-employer purchasing means - Why employers hesitate to fund open-ended GLP-1 coverage - How fixed employer contributions could make benefits more sustainable - Why successful treatment and a lower BMI can lead to lost coverage - The hidden administrative costs of prior authorizations - What to do if you’re worried about affording your medication - Options for self-employed people without employer assistance - Jay’s perspective on Medicare, compounded medications, competition, and equitable access
**ABOUT THE GUEST**
Jay Bregman is the founder and CEO of Andel, a healthcare technology platform that enables high-cost medications like GLP-1s to be more accessible through employer benefits. With more than two decades of experience building and scaling companies, Jay brings a strong understanding of how policy, pricing, and market incentives intersect.
In developing Andel, he has focused on redesigning access pathways for high-demand, high-cost drugs that traditional coverage models fail to accommodate. His perspective on GLP-1 access and employer responsibility has been featured in Inc., STAT News, and Pharmaceutical Executive. He has also spoken at TEDx and Web Summit about business leadership.
Jay appears in this episode in his capacity as Andel’s founder and CEO. His comments about Andel and the pharmaceutical market reflect his experience and commercial perspective.

Can You Stop Taking a GLP-1? What the Research Says w/ Henrik Gudbergsen, MD, PhD
If you’ve reached your goal weight on a GLP-1, you may be wondering what comes next. Do you stay on the same dose indefinitely, move to a lower dose, or gradually taper off?
Ana speaks with Henrik Gudbergsen, MD, PhD, about the emerging evidence around personalized GLP-1 dosing and structured tapering. They examine what early observational research suggests, why lifestyle and behavioral support may matter during maintenance, and why stopping medication will not be appropriate, or possible, for everyone.

Fiber, Bloating & GLP-1s: What to Know w/ David Istier
Fiber is suddenly showing up everywhere, from soda and candy to pasta and protein snacks. But more fiber isn’t automatically better, especially when it leaves you feeling bloated, uncomfortable, or confused about what your body actually needs.
Registered dietitian and GLP-1 user Ana Reisdorf sits down with David Istier, founder and CEO of gutzy Organic, to discuss the gut microbiome, prebiotics, probiotics, and why different sources of fiber can feel different in your body. David also shares how his experience helping launch GoGo squeeZ in the United States—and the health challenges he faced while building his own company—led to the creation of gutzy.
For people taking GLP-1 medications, the central takeaway is simple: eating less makes the nutritional quality of what you eat even more important. Ana and David discuss how to look beyond protein and fiber marketing claims, prioritize real food, and find convenient options for days when appetite is low.
**IN THIS EPISODE** - What the gut microbiome, probiotics, and prebiotics mean - Why different sources of fiber may feel different in your body - How fiber became the food industry’s newest marketing trend - Why more fiber isn’t automatically better - What to consider when choosing fiber-fortified foods - Why nutrient density matters when you’re eating less on a GLP-1 - How GLP-1 medications are changing the food industry - The challenge of combining convenience with real-food ingredients - David’s journey from GoGo squeeZ to founding gutzy Organic - What’s inside gutzy’s fruit, vegetable, fiber, and plant-protein pouches
**ABOUT THE GUEST** David Istier is the founder and CEO of gutzy Organic. Originally from France, David began his career in food marketing and later helped launch GoGo squeeZ in the United States. After experiencing significant stress and health challenges while building his own company, he became interested in plants, prebiotic fiber, and gut health. That experience eventually led him to create gutzy Organic and its refrigerated fruit-and-vegetable pouches.

6 Years Into GLP-1s: What Maintenance Really Looks Like w/ Tara Rothenhoefer
Tara Rothenhoefer was one of the earliest participants in a tirzepatide clinical trial, before the medication had a brand name. After a lifelong battle with obesity, she began the trial in 2020 at 342 pounds. Eighteen months later, she had lost 132 pounds. But when the study ended, she faced a year without medication, uncertainty around access, and the emotional work of learning how to live in a body she had never known before.
In this episode, Tara shares what changed when food noise finally quieted, why medication alone was never the whole story, and how she learned that “more weight loss” is not always the goal.
IN THIS EPISODE - Tara’s lifelong experience with obesity, dieting, and weight stigma - How a radio ad and a clinical-trial opening changed the course of her life - What it was like to join an early tirzepatide trial with only a 25% chance of receiving the medication - The role of nutrition support, movement, and gradual behavior change - Losing 132 pounds in 18 months—and what happened when the trial ended - Navigating medication access, shortages, judgment, and compounded medication - Why the scale and clothing sizes can become a new kind of obsession - Recognizing when continued weight loss was no longer healthy - What long-term maintenance looks like after a major weight change - Using medication as one tool in a broader, ongoing relationship with health
ABOUT THE GUEST Tara Rothenhoefer is a wife, mom, and grandma who, after a lifelong battle with obesity, joined a clinical trial for tirzepatide in 2020 that led to her 222-pound weight loss. Featured on numerous national platforms, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Tamron Hall show, she now shares her journey to encourage and inspire others, while navigating maintenance and living life in a small body for the first time ever.

The Psychology of Weighing Yourself on GLP-1 Medications w/ Brian Baumal, RP
Your scale isn't measuring weight...it's measuring fear, shame, and whether you believe your GLP-1 is working.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf sits down with Brian Baumal, a registered psychotherapist who lost 100 pounds, kept it off for 14 years, and recovered from two eating disorders. He explains how the scale can become exposure therapy, why shame drives the "lose it fast" thinking that sets you up to fail on Ozempic or Zepbound, and how to stop tying your worth to a number.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why weight gain on a GLP-1 sends you into a spiral (and how to stop it) - Using the scale as exposure therapy: the CBT-E "collaborative weighing" technique - How shame causes quick weight loss goals, black-and-white thinking, and failure - Why Ozempic and Zepbound don't eliminate food noise completely — and why that's normal - Habit change vs. the underlying psychology of emotional eating
ABOUT THE GUEST Brian Baumal is a registered psychotherapist based in Toronto, Canada, trained in depth psychotherapy with a practice focused on the emotional and unconscious drivers of weight, eating, and shame. He has adapted cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E) into a weight management approach. Brian lost 100 pounds and has kept it off for nearly 14 years, and is recovered from two eating disorders — exercise bulimia and binge eating disorder.

The FDA Is Reviewing 7 Popular Peptides: But Are They Actually Safe? w/ Tanna Donalson, PA-C
That "miracle" peptide in an unlabeled vial isn't the same science as your GLP-1, and the FDA is meeting this week to decide the fate of seven of them.
Registered dietitian and GLP-1 user Ana Reisdorf sits down with Tanna Donalson, PA-C, owner of Redbud Medical in Denver, where she prescribes, manages, and monitors peptides for her patients every day. After 15 years in trauma and emergency medicine, Tanna built a practice around exactly this: knowing what each peptide is, what it actually does for a patient, and how to run it safely. Together they break down why semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) belong in a category all their own, the seven peptides on the FDA's table, and the two questions that reveal whether a peptide provider is legit.
IN THIS EPISODE - What a peptide actually is, and why your GLP-1 is NOT the same thing as BPC-157 or TB-500 - The seven peptides the FDA is reviewing: BPC-157, KPV, TB-500 (the "Wolverine complex"), MOTS-c, DSIP, Semax, and Epitalon - The "funding gap" — why peptides that can't be patented never get human clinical trials - Six things the FDA worries about in an unlabeled vial, from identity and purity to the cancer/angiogenesis risk - The two questions that tell you if a peptide provider is legitimate (503A/B pharmacies and third-party certificates of analysis)
ABOUT THE GUEST Tanna Donalson is a Physician Assistant and Owner of Redbud Medical in Denver Colorado. Her background is in Trauma and Emergency Medicine and she is now specializing in Women's Health and Wellness, Peptides, Weight Loss, Hormones and all things preventative care to help people live longer, healthier lives.

He Helped Big Food Hack Your Brain. Now He's Switched Sides w/ Dr. Glenn Livingston
Your GLP-1 can quiet the food noise, but the psychologist who helped big food companies engineer your cravings says it can't erase them...and thinking it will is why weight comes back.
Ana Reisdorf, registered dietitian and GLP-1 user, talks with Dr. Glenn Livingston, psychologist and author of Defeat Your Cravings (2M+ readers), who spent years consulting for big food companies before losing 80 pounds himself. They break down why the craving center of your brain has no concept of long-term goals, why "everything in moderation" backfires, and how to use Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, or Mounjaro as a training tool instead of a wake up skinny pill.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why food cravings come back on Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro — and how to handle them - The "extinction burst": why cravings get worse right before they go dormant for good - How to stop overeating with one specific food rule instead of "everything in moderation" - Why your GLP-1 works like a personal trainer holding the bar, not a skinny pill - Why fasting on a GLP-1 backfires and how fast you should actually lose weight
ABOUT THE GUEST Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You have likely seen his work and appearances in many articles and news segments on major publications and media over the years. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own clients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. He earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Yeshiva University in 1991.

The 90-Day GLP-1 Plan: Why a Longevity Coach Takes Clients Off the Meds w/ Jason Nelson
Most people treat GLP-1s as a lifelong prescription. Jason Nelson gives clients 90 days on the medication...then takes them off on purpose.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf talks with Jason Nelson, former competitive bodybuilder and founder of Body Image in Williston Park, NY, about using Ozempic, Wegovy, and other GLP-1 medications as the starting line of a longevity plan — not the finish line. He explains how his team decides when clients taper off, the metabolic markers he tracks, and why physical function matters more than the scale after 60 — including one 64-year-old breast cancer survivor who tested at a biological age of 49.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy work best as a 90–180 day sprint, not a lifelong medication - Biological age testing explained: epigenetic methylation, pace of aging, and organ system (Symphony) age - The metabolic markers to fix first: fasting insulin, A1C, triglycerides, blood pressure, and waist circumference - How to prevent muscle loss after 60 — anabolic resistance, protein needs, and strength training 4–5 days a week - Balance training and calf circumference: the overlooked predictors of falls and mortality in older adults
ABOUT THE GUEST Jason Nelson is a former competitive bodybuilder and the founder of Body Image, a personal training studio in Williston Park, NY, where he's spent 19 years helping hundreds of adults over 40 rebuild their metabolism, strength, and energy. He now leads the Human Optimization Project, a longevity-focused coaching program that combines GLP-1 medication support with strength training, metabolic health optimization, and biological age testing.

Could Your Employer Pay You for Hitting Your GLP-1 Health Goals? | Jeremy Shane
Your health insurance only makes money when you're sick, which is exactly why GLP-1 coverage keeps getting cut, and why one former WebMD exec is building a model to flip the incentive.
Ana Reisdorf, registered dietitian and GLP-1 user, sits down with Jeremy Shane, founder of Life for Health and former WebMD and Medscape executive, to unpack why the value of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound shows up 10 to 20 years from now — and nobody in the current system gets paid for that. Jeremy lays out a model that would pay GLP-1 users cash for hitting their health goals, let that money grow tax-deferred like a 401(k), and fund it entirely from dollars already being spent on sick care.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why health insurers argue there's no long-term ROI on GLP-1 medications — and the Medicare data that says they're wrong - The Life for Health model: getting paid for sustained metabolic results, with the cash growing tax-deferred inside a universal life insurance policy - Why self-insured employers (who cover 65% of American workers) are the fastest path to real GLP-1 coverage - What happens to a long-term GLP-1 plan if you change jobs - Why life insurers are the only players in healthcare who profit from the absence of disease - How the 1970s split between medicine and healthcare delivery created the chronic disease crisis we're in now
ABOUT THE GUEST Jeremy is an lifelong entrepreneur and leader of disruptive businesses in energy, consumer health, and education. His mission is to solve chronic disease, using Life for Health, his approach to increase healthspan using life insurance, instead of health insurance. Chronic disease is a long game, involving completely different scientific and medical risks than the short-term, routine and emergency issues for which health insurance was designed. It's a radical but practically doable way to combine the best of value based care, longevity medicine, and an insurance structure that actually pays people and clinicians over time as they succeed in reversing and preventing disease.

Ozempic, Wegovy & Diabetes Remission: Beyond Lowering Blood Sugar w/ Dr. Jason Shumard
Her A1C was perfect. Her kidneys failed anyway, and Dr. Jason Shumard says it's the same blind spot facing anyone losing weight on a GLP-1.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf talks with Dr. Jason Shumard, DC, a functional medicine practitioner who's spent his career working with type 2 diabetics, about what an A1C number can't tell you. They get into the cholesterol ratio that flags insulin resistance years before your glucose moves, why "eating healthy" usually isn't, and his real concern about staying on Ozempic or another GLP-1 long-term without addressing what's driving the disease underneath.
IN THIS EPISODE - The triglyceride-to-HDL ratio that signals insulin resistance before A1C or fasting glucose ever moves - Why a "well-controlled" A1C of 6.1 didn't prevent full kidney failure and dialysis - Whether GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy should be cycled instead of taken continuously for years - What a low C-peptide reveals about your pancreas after long-term injections - The bariatric surgery parallel that predicts diabetes coming back even after the weight comes off
ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Jason Shumard is a Functional Medicine practitioner with over 20 years of experience specializing in Type 2 Diabetes and insulin resistance. He uses a root-cause, lab-based approach to uncover why blood sugar rises, focusing on factors like hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction. Known for simplifying complex science, Dr. Shumard helps people understand their bodies and take control of their health with practical, personalized strategies. Universal Healthcare Won't Cover GLP-1s - Weight Medicine Abroad w/ Emma Lidell
In Sweden, universal healthcare won't cover GLP-1s for weight loss, and the $500/month price tag still isn't the biggest barrier to getting a prescription.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf talks with Emma Lidell, host of Sweden's first dedicated weight medicine podcast, about what GLP-1 access really looks like outside the US. They compare out-of-pocket costs for Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro (Zepbound), unpack Sweden's institutionalized Saturday candy culture, and get into why Emma says the best part of a year on GLP-1s has nothing to do with the scale.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why Sweden's universal healthcare doesn't cover Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro for weight loss - What GLP-1s cost out of pocket in Sweden vs. LillyDirect prices in the US - Sweden's BMI criteria for GLP-1 prescriptions — and why US doctors ignore the same rules - How "Saturday candy" culture shaped Sweden's relationship with sugar - Losing 40 pounds in a year and why food noise relief matters more than weight loss
ABOUT THE GUEST Emma Lidell is the creator and host of The Weight Medicine Podcast, where she explores what it means to live with obesity and how GLP-1 treatment changes that experience. With a background in communication and storytelling, her work is rooted in her own life — after a lifetime of struggling with weight, food noise, and shame, GLP-1 medication shifted something fundamental for her. She now uses her platform to share real stories, reduce stigma, and examine both the emotional and biological sides of weight in an honest, human way.

Denied Bariatric Surgery, Then Lost 90 Pounds on GLP-1s: Kelly Mooney's Story
Bariatric surgery told her she didn't qualify. Three years later, Kelly Mooney has lost more than 90 pounds on a GLP-1 and the pain from a chronic bone disease that once had her fearing a wheelchair is nearly gone.
Ana Reisdorf, registered dietitian, talks with Kelly Mooney, a Portland-based photographer and former PR professional, about becoming her doctor's very first GLP-1 patient after a bariatric surgeon told her she wasn't sick enough to qualify. Kelly walks through the surprise anti-inflammatory relief from Paget's disease that showed up within weeks, why her weight loss timeline looked nothing like what she saw on social media, and how the medication eventually spread to her husband, her parents, and her in-laws.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why Kelly didn't qualify for bariatric surgery at a size 24 - The unexpected way GLP-1s eased her Paget's disease bone pain within two weeks - What a realistic GLP-1 timeline looks like (90 pounds over 3 years, not 30 in a month) - How her husband, 84-year-old mother-in-law, and 82-year-old father all ended up on GLP-1s too - Managing constipation, losing the enjoyment of food and wine, and shifting from "willpower" to "medical"
ABOUT THE GUEST Kelly Mooney is a business owner, photographer, and former PR and marketing professional based in Portland, Oregon. She spent 17 years running her own PR firm, earning clients national media coverage on The Today Show, Oprah, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, before shifting to run Kelly Mooney Photography, where she captures authentic, personality-driven imagery for individuals, families, and brands. A former athlete, Kelly stayed active for years but struggled to lose weight despite consistent workouts and programs like Weight Watchers and Overeaters Anonymous. In 2022, after being told she didn't qualify for bariatric surgery, her doctor suggested she try one of the newer GLP-1 medications — Kelly became her first patient, bringing in the research herself to help guide the decision. Since then, she's lost more than 90 pounds and seen a dramatic improvement in her Paget's disease of the bone, going from needing a cane to having knee replacement surgery and rediscovering the athlete in her. For Kelly, the journey has been less about weight loss and more about reclaiming her life and building sustainable, long-term habits.

GLP-1s, Hypertension, and Blood Pressure Medications w/ Dr. Yolanda Lawson
A GLP-1 can drop your blood pressure five to six points, which is exactly why so many women make a dangerous mistake with their meds.
Registered dietitian and GLP-1 user Ana Reisdorf talks with Dr. Yolanda Lawson, OB-GYN and past president of the National Medical Association, about why a woman's cardiovascular risk catches up to a man's at menopause, the blood pressure drop you can realistically expect from weight loss on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound, and the under-discussed way GLP-1s help your body clear sodium. You'll learn exactly what to do — and what to ask your provider — before you ever consider stopping a blood pressure prescription.
IN THIS EPISODE - How much a GLP-1 actually lowers blood pressure (and why every 2.2 pounds you lose matters) - Why women's heart disease risk climbs after menopause when protective estrogen drops - The hidden way GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy help your body excrete sodium - Whether the racing heart you feel on shot day is affecting your blood pressure - What to ask your doctor before stopping blood pressure medication after weight loss

Food as Medicine: What Actually Works w/ CookUnity
On a GLP-1, you're eating about 30% less, but your body still needs 100% of its nutrition, and that changes what every meal has to do.
Ana Reisdorf, registered dietitian, is joined by Bruno Didier, CEO of CookUnity Business, and Kristy Del Coro, a registered dietitian and trained chef who sets the nutrition standards for CookUnity's GLP-1 meal line. They break down why a "GLP-1" label on packaged food doesn't guarantee it's healthy, why you don't need 40 grams of protein at every meal, and how a meal service can be a stepping stone to cooking better on your own.
IN THIS EPISODE - What actually makes a meal GLP-1 friendly (protein and fiber minimums, lower saturated fat and sodium, no spicy or fried foods) - Why you don't need 40 grams of protein at every meal on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound - How to get 100% of your daily nutrition while eating 30% less on a GLP-1 - Whether a "GLP-1" label on packaged food really means it's healthy - Using prepared meals as a stepping stone to cooking healthy food yourself

Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf talks with Claudia Dzina, a certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist who trains women on GLP-1 medications one-on-one over Zoom. They cover why you don't have to lift heavier and heavier to get stronger, the warning signs your tendons can't keep up with your muscles, and exactly where to start if you've never worked out a day in your life — without burning out, getting hurt, or quitting after a few weeks.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why muscle is the body's largest glucose sink and how it makes your GLP-1 work better - Strength training vs cardio on a GLP-1: which to choose when you only have time for one - The warning signs your tendons and ligaments can't keep up with your muscles - Progressive overload without lifting heavier — why mechanical tension matters more than load - Where to start strength training if you've never exercised, plus the three planes of motion
ABOUT THE GUEST Claudia Dzina is an online personal trainer, corrective exercise specialist, and Pilates instructor. She works one-on-one with women who are using GLP-1 medications through live Zoom sessions, so they can train from home (or wherever they choose). Most of the women she works with are brand new to exercise and are trying to build strength while their bodies are changing pretty quickly. Her approach is structured and progressive — building real strength, but in a way the body can actually keep up with, so clients don't burn out, get hurt, or quit after a few weeks. Her training style focuses on how the body adapts during change: the nervous system, muscle, and connective tissue all respond differently, so she paces things in a way that allows clients to keep going and eventually handle more.

The Importance of DEXA Scans for GLP-1 Users w/ Tony Orlando
Everyone on Ozempic worries about losing muscle, almost no one is watching their bones, and one in two women over 50 will fracture one.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf sits down with Tony Orlando, founder of DEXA Plus, to break down what a DEXA scan actually reveals about your body on a GLP-1: bone density, muscle, and the hidden visceral fat the scale will never show you. If you're losing weight on Wegovy, Zepbound, or Mounjaro, this is the metric that tells you whether you're doing it right — or quietly wrecking the muscle and bone you can't afford to lose.
IN THIS EPISODE - What a DEXA scan measures (bone density, muscle, visceral fat) and why the scale lies when you're on a GLP-1 - Why insurance won't pay for a DEXA until age 65 — and what it actually costs out of pocket - How rapid Ozempic and Wegovy weight loss can quietly drain your bone density - Visceral fat vs subcutaneous fat: the hidden fat around your organs tied to type 2 diabetes and heart disease - DEXA vs InBody and bioimpedance scales — why your body fat reading can swing 7+ points between them
ABOUT THE GUEST Tony Orlando is the founder of DEXA Plus and a leading advocate for integrating precision health technology into modern healthcare and wellness practices. He works with medical providers, clinics, and performance facilities to implement DEXA scanning as a core tool for delivering accurate, actionable body composition data. Tony's focus is on helping providers move beyond the scale—giving their patients and clients real insight into fat loss, muscle retention, and metabolic health, especially in the context of GLP-1 therapies. His approach empowers professionals to use objective data to guide better decisions, improve outcomes, and create more personalized care. Through DEXA Plus, Tony is helping reshape how providers measure progress, turning weight loss from guesswork into something that can be clearly tracked, understood, and optimized.

Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD sits down with Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDCES, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist who has been using GLP-1s with patients for blood sugar control long before they exploded for weight loss. Higher dose isn't better. You're supposed to eat. And no, you don't have to be on Ozempic for life. A nurse practitioner who lost 90 pounds breaks down GLP-1 myths.
Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD sits down with Christine Grant, NP, a nurse practitioner at Tyde Wellness and a GLP-1 user who has lost 90 pounds over the last two years. IN THIS EPISODE - Why undereating on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound backfires — fatigue, hair loss, and muscle loss - The 0.5–2 lb per week sweet spot and why higher doses don't mean faster results - Microdosing for maintenance — what it looks like and who it works for - The cardiovascular case for staying on a GLP-1 long term - How to tell when your dose is actually too high (hint: it's not "I'm hungry sometimes")

The Hidden Anxiety of Weight Loss w/ Dr. Robyn Pashby
Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD, talks with Dr. Robyn Pashby, clinical health psychologist and founder of Health Psychology Partners, about the mental load of weight loss - why anxiety often climbs as the scale drops, why diet rules feel impossible to release on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound, and why weight management works better as lifelong care than a finish line. If you've ever felt afraid to trust your body on a GLP-1, this conversation gives you a calmer framework for what actually matters.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why anxiety often goes up when weight comes down on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound - The hidden "diet backpack" that keeps people stuck in food tracking, calendar countdowns, and on/off-the-wagon thinking - Why GLP-1 medications should be treated as one tool in a lifelong toolbox, not a permanent solution - How to build an obesity-medicine-trained care team (physician, registered dietitian, psychologist, movement specialist) - How to respond when family, friends, or neighbors judge your decision to use a GLP-1
ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Robyn Pashby is the founder of Health Psychology Partners and a clinical health psychologist with a dual-track PhD in medical and clinical psychology and nearly 20 years of clinical experience focused on weight, eating, internalized weight bias, anxiety, and relational concerns. She serves on the National Board of Directors of the Obesity Action Coalition, the American Diabetes Association's Obesity and Weight Management Advisory Group, and the Clinical Practice Committee of The Obesity Society, and holds a research faculty appointment at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. A PSYPACT-approved psychologist, she trains physicians and allied healthcare providers on weight-inclusive care and provides telehealth therapy in more than 40 states.

When GLP-1s Don't Work and What to Do Next w/ Alex Mufson
Some women aren't losing weight on max-dose GLP-1s — and the fix is dosing down, not pushing harder.
Ana Reisdorf, registered dietitian and GLP-1 user, sits down with Alex Mufson, LCSW and founder of Canary House, to unpack why high-functioning women show up as non-responders on Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound. They cover the labs traditional medicine misses, why under-eating sabotages results, and how regulating the body — not suppressing appetite — is what actually moves the scale.
IN THIS EPISODE - Why some non-responders lose more on a microdose of tirzepatide than on a maximum dose - The ferritin, fasting insulin, and Dutch Plus markers most GLP-1 prescribers don't run - The glucose-insulin mismatch behind weight gain that "doesn't make sense" - Why appetite suppression isn't the goal of GLP-1 therapy — and can stall fat loss entirely - How epigenetics, survival mode, and high-functioning caretaker patterns block GLP-1 response
ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Mufson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, is the founder of Canary House, an integrative healing practice specializing in high-functioning individuals living with persistent exhaustion, pain, and unexplained symptoms despite normal or inconclusive labs. Her work focuses on nervous, immune, and metabolic regulation for people whose lives appear stable on paper but feel increasingly effortful from the inside.

GLP-1s, Diabetes, and Why the Weight Loss Came Second w/ Christa Brown, RD
Before Ozempic was a weight-loss story, it was a diabetes drug - and at diabetes doses, it behaves nothing like the version you've heard about.
Registered dietitian Ana Reisdorf sits down with diabetes specialist Christa Brown, RD, to unpack what GLP-1s actually do for type 2 diabetes - and why they rarely cause the blood sugar crashes other diabetes meds do. They cover dosing, A1C, nutrition, and the lifestyle pieces still doing real work alongside the medication.
IN THIS EPISODE
How GLP-1s lower A1C without causing dangerous low blood sugar - the four-mechanism breakdown
Mounjaro vs. Ozempic: how diabetes dosing actually differs from weight-loss dosing
Why type 2 diabetes patients shouldn't fear carbs on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro
The vitamin D, magnesium, and B12 deficiencies behind GLP-1 fatigue, and what to take
Adaptogens, sleep hygiene, and the lifestyle moves that quietly improve blood sugar on their own
