#12 - Dr. Eberhard Stüber – Die Straße der Nachhaltigkeit

Prof. Dr. Dr. Eberhard Stüber wurde 1927 geboren und feiert heuer seinen 98. Geburtstag. Er studierte in Innsbruck Naturgeschichte und Geografie und begann bereits 1946 seine Mitarbeit am Haus der Natur Salzburg, dessen Direktor er ab 1976 wurde. 1952 gründete Stüber die Österreichische Naturschutzjugend und war maßgeblich an der Entstehung des Nationalparks Hohe Tauern beteiligt – durch dessen Herzstück heute die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße führt. Man kann sagen: Er hat sein Leben dem Naturschutz gewidmet. Und wie wir in diesem Gespräch erfahren, ist das Thema Naturschutz nicht erst in den letzten Jahren aktuell geworden – schon Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde dafür leidenschaftlich demonstriert. Zu Beginn blicken wir gemeinsam auf die Anfänge seiner Arbeit zurück, später erfahren wir von einem der besten Kenner der Region, was die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße heute so besonders macht – landschaftlich, ökologisch und emotional. #08 EN - Searching for traces

In this episode, we discuss the Pass Sanctuary Hochtor, which also has an exhibition at the south portal, on the Carinthian side of the Hochtor. The exhibition invites you on a time journey through three and a half millennia, during which the Glockner crossing was the shortest trade route between Germany in the north and the world trade center Venice in the south. The exhibition was designed by Dr. Georg Kandutsch, who also found and prepared many of the exhibits himself – and today, he is guiding me through the exhibition. He describes himself as a hobby archaeologist because, as he explained to me with a wink at the beginning, anything you haven't studied properly shouldn't be called your profession. The philosopher Richard David Precht once titled one of his books: "Who Am I? And If So, How Many?" – Rarely has this applied so well to someone as it does to Dr. Kandutsch. On a hike in the Hohe Tauern National Park with national park ranger Konrad Mariacher. With an area of 1,856 km², the Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest national park in the entire Alpine region and one of the largest protected areas in Central Europe. Today our host Max Kögl will be given a short tour by Konrad along the hiking trail from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe to the Wilhelm-Swarovski viewing platform.
