31 - Denzel Washington Films (feat. Trey Armstrong): Crimson Tide, The Tragedy of Macbeth, & Devil in a Blue Dress05 Aug 202401:22:23

A LEGENDARY ACTOR'S SPOTLIGHT!

This week on the Gimme Three Podcast, co-host Bella Efstratis is joined by actor, filmmaker, & writer Trey Armstrong to celebrate his favorite actor of all time, Denzel Washington.

Trey recommends a brilliant variety of three incredible Denzel Washington films:

  • First, we have Tony Scott's standout 1995 war thriller, Crimson Tide, featuring a young and powerful Denzel Washington going toe-to-toe with the legendary Gene Hackman.

  • Next, we dive headfirst into Joel Coen's 2021 Shakespeare adaptation, The Tragedy of Macbeth, showcasing Denzel's Oscar-nominated performance as the titular character.

  • Finally, we go back to 1995 for Trey's favorite Denzel film and one of his all-time best performances, as Easy Rawlins in Carl Franklin's neo-noir mystery thriller, Devil in a Blue Dress.

Throughout these films, Denzel's remarkable talent and versatility shine as he dominates every scene and proves he can truly do it all.

In this episode, Trey and Bella praise these three cinematic gems, discuss the state of the film industry, and share what our generation (Gen Z) wants to see in theaters.

They just don't make movies like these anymore, so this is a call to action: Give us more Crimson Tides, and, most importantly, more Devil in a Blue Dress!

As this is just the beginning of Denzel's brilliant filmography, expect more Denzel content to come in the future...

So let us know what you think of this episode & tell us which three Denzel Washington films you'd like to see in the next episode!

24 - Queer Love Stories pt. 2: Silverlake Life: The View From Here, Saving Face, & Show Me Love/Fucking Åmål20 Jun 202400:50:50

In part two of our Queer Love Stories series, Nick and Bella delve into an extraordinarily underrated documentary and two brilliant romcoms that highlight some of our favorite queer love stories in cinema.

Nick starts with Peter Friedman's Silverlake Life: The View From Here, a brutally intimate video diary that documents Tom Joslin and Mark Massi's remarkable love story and their painfully real experience living with AIDS in the early '90s.

Next, Bella introduces Alice Wu's Saving Face, an incredibly heartfelt mother-daughter story and a hilarious romcom that tackles social and cultural stigmas head-on.

We finish the series with a recommendation from Nick's hidden gem vault: the Swedish coming-of-age romcom, Show Me Love (AKA Fucking Åmål).

These are three absolute must-watch films! Let us know what you think of this episode and share your thoughts on these movies!

We've finally reached the grand finale of our Pixar Extravaganza!

In this episode, Nick, Bella, and Max discuss under-appreciated gems, the groundbreaking evolution of Pixar's animation technology, and the increasingly pertinent "spoonful of sugar" message in Pixar's most sci-fi film.

Max starts us off with his second movie pick, Pixar's criminally underrated, Kurosawa-inspired film, A Bug's Life.

Next, Bella hits us with an in-depth appreciation of her all-time favorite Pixar film, Monsters, Inc.

And Max concludes the episode with his third Pixar pick, the timeless masterpiece, WALLE.

120 - Michelle Pfeiffer Spotlight: Dangerous Liaisons, The Witches of Eastwick, & Married to the Mob (Re-Release)08 Apr 202601:04:50

Join the dangerous minds of Nicholas Ybarra and Bella Efstratis as they discuss one of the 21st century's most fabulous performers, Michelle Pfeiffer.

To celebrate Ms. Pfeiffer's birthday, Nick and Bella explore three wildly entertaining films from Michelle's filmography. In this episode, we discuss titillating Dangerous Liaisons, the outrageously deft The Witches of Eastwick, and the unique Jonathan Demme gem Married To The Mob.

And don't worry—show producer Sonja Mereu has Pfeiffer's iconic portrayal of Catwoman covered in Sonja's Movie Minute.

Our only regret is that Michelle Pfeiffer's birthday is not celebrated every month because we just can't get enough. For now, this jam-packed episode will leave you with a case of Pfeiffer Fever!

*This episode contains spoilers. However, the films are over thirty years old, so don't blame us.*

18 - Roger Corman Tribute: Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Intruder, & The Trip27 May 202401:10:57

Earlier this month, we lost one of the most significant figures in the history of the film industry, Roger Corman.

Corman's illustrious career can't be narrowed down to three films, so we opted to pick three of his directorial films that helped shape American pop culture.

We start with his 1960 gem Little Shop Of Horrors, the gold standard for independent filmmaking and the movie that sparked a decades-long running Broadway play and a very successful musical adaptation.

Corman's passion project, The Intruder, highlights the filmmaker's deeper side as an artist. The raw and horrific film stands out against most of his directorial and production work.

Lastly, we take a trip to the late 1960s with The Trip - a film about… well, tripping. Tripping balls, in fact! LSD!

Join us as Nick and Bella discuss Corman's brilliant work and wildly entertaining stories about the making of these films.

17 - Mad Max Trilogy: Mad Max, Mad Max 2, & Mad Max: Fury Road20 May 202401:14:40

In preparation for the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Nick & Bella go deep into the wasteland of the Mad Max Universe.

In this episode, we explore the three best films of the franchise (thus far). We start with the scrappy, earnest Ausploitation film that started all the madness: Mad Max

If indie gems aren’t your bag, but kinky leather outfits are - we’ve got you covered. Mad Max 2 (also known as The Road Warrior) is second on the docket. We explore the layers added to George Miller’s world and the leaps he made in his visual storytelling.

Finally, we finished the episode with the modern classic (yes, we went there) Mad Max: Fury Road. What is there to say? Well… a lot. Listen and let us know what you think!

16 - MORE Great Mother Characters: Claudine, The Lost Daughter, & Riding In Cars With Boys16 May 202400:55:37

In part two of our Mother's Day Celebration, Nick & Bella discuss three more memorable mother characters.

Claudine, starring the legendary Diahann Carroll, was a boundary-pushing film about a mother of six navigating the welfare system. The film also stars a sweaty, studly James Earl Jones.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal knocked it out of the park with her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Join Bella as she explores the touchy but important themes in this Olivia Colman drama.

Finally, another actress turned director: the great Penny Marshall's film Riding In Cars With Boys has a little bit of everything. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll dance - and you'll fall in love with  Drew Barrymore all over again!

15 - Great Mother Characters pt. 1: Room, A Woman Under the Influence, Everything Everywhere All At Once13 May 202400:58:30

Happy Belated Mother’s Day! We love our mothers, and we love film. So what better way to celebrate than to discuss three unforgettable mother characters in cinema?

In part one of two, Nick & Bella opens the show with a few very heavy but powerful films. Brie Larson’s Academy Award-winning performance in Room is on the docket (yeah… heavy).

We follow that up with what is widely considered to be one of the greatest performances of all time: Gena Rowlands's performance as Mabel in A Woman Under The Influence. (I told you… heavy!)

Thankfully, we ease it up with the crowd favorite Everything Everywhere All At Once. Who doesn’t love that movie, right? Right?

Also, throughout the episode, Bella and Nick remember the films they watched repeatedly with their mothers and make a philosophical comparison between tea and coffee.

11 - Movie Musicals pt. 3 (feat. Max Sopkin): Annie (1982) & Little Shop of Horrors (1986)15 Apr 202400:56:26

Our Movie Musicals series reaches its grand finale this week!

Join us for the exciting conclusion of this series, featuring our esteemed guest, Max Sopkin, as we explore the unforgettable songs and scenes of our final two picks, Annie and Little Shop of Horrors.

Prepare to deep dive into the heart of these timeless classics as Nick, Bella, and Max sing praises to the physical prowess of Carol Burnett’s remarkable performance as Miss Hannigan in Annie (1982), and pay homage to the incomparable Ellen Greene, who was truly born to play the role of Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors (1986).

But it’s not just about these brilliant performances; these two 80s gems also delve into fascinating themes about the darker side of humanity: capitalism and human greed. Max provides some insightful commentary for us on the cultural and socio-political context of the time period these two musicals originated from, and how they evolved into the film adaptations they are today.

Don’t miss out on this episode, celebrating the magic of movies and musical theater! Bella and Max introduce Annie, a childhood classic, to Nick. While Max and Nick share their beloved film, Little Shop of Horrors, with Bella. It's the perfect cinematic exchange!

On this week’s episode, we honor one of the greatest comedic minds ever to grace the silver screen. Catherine O’Hara. In particular, we explore her wildly impressive improvisational collaborations with Christopher Guest. These films highlight some of the most impressive elements of O’Hara’s talents: her improv skills, her dramatic range, her world-building, and her overall magnetic star power.

  • We start with the small-town mockumentary Waiting for Guffman, where O’Hara plays Sheila Albertson, a travel agent with big dreams of Broadway stages and Hollywood lights.
  • Next, O’Hara plays Cookie Fleck in the iconic mockumentary about the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows in Best In Show
  • Finally, Catherine O’Hara plays Marilyn Hack, a struggling actor looking to climb her way back up the ladder in the biting industry satire, For Your Consideration.

Let us know what you think of these films and what is your favorite Catherine O’Hara performance ever?

117 - Alice Guy-Blaché: Cinema’s First Woman Director (Madame's Cravings, The Consequences of Feminism, & A Fool and His Money)16 Mar 202600:52:53

For Women’s History Month, the Gimme Three Podcast is spotlighting a filmmaker whose name was nearly lost to history: Alice Guy-Blaché.

Before Hollywood existed, before the language of cinema had even fully formed, one woman was already experimenting with storytelling on screen—directing hundreds of films and helping shape what movies could become.

So why don’t more people know her name?

In this episode, Nick and Bella explore three of Alice Guy-Blaché’s fascinating and wildly entertaining short films: Madame’s Cravings (1906), The Consequences of Feminism (1906), and A Fool and His Money (1912).

Along the way, they uncover the remarkable story of a filmmaker who was decades ahead of her time—pushing the boundaries of comedy, visual storytelling, and social satire in the earliest days of cinema.

More than a century later, these films are still funny, inventive, and clearly influential.

Join Nick and Bella as they rediscover the work of a true cinematic trailblazer—and ask how someone so important could almost disappear entirely from film history.

Also! Sonja Mereu's Movie Minute spotlights the great Chloé Zhao for her extraordinary work on Hamnet. For an instant mood boost, check out this video from her Hamnet set: https://www.tiktok.com/@focusfeatures/video/7597484850001612087

116 - Oscar Isaac Spotlight: Inside Llewyn Davis, The Card Counter & Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein09 Mar 202601:25:14

Today, we celebrate the birthday of a tremendous actor who elevates every film that he’s in. Of course, we are talking about Mr. Oscar Isaac. In his prolific career, Isaac has helmed many blockbuster franchises. Still, he hasn’t shied away from layered, mysterious, and sometimes horrifying characters - those are the type of performances that we tackle in this week’s episode.

  • We start with Oscar Isaac’s star-making performance as a struggling folk singer in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis.
  • Next, in what is perhaps Isaac’s most haunting and complex performance to date, he plays William Tell, a mysterious gambler with a nightmarish past in Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter.
  • Finally, Isaac tackles a role that many great actors have tackled before: Victor Frankenstein. But in Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, Oscar Isaac breathes new life and pain into the iconic character.

In this episode, the trio brings their individuality, passions, and distinct cinematic taste to the table with three wildly different films that captured their hearts and minds in 2025.

  • Up first, Nick hits it out of the park with Carson Lund’s charming debut, Eephus.

  • Next, Jessica invites us into the glittering chaos of Alexis Langlois' Queens of Drama, a queer French musical jam-packed with bangers that will be stuck in your head for days.

  • Finally, Bella delivers the final blow with the morbidly tragic and deeply horrifying Bring Her Back, the latest entry in the Philippou brothers’ ever-growing horror filmography.

If you loved these films, it’s guaranteed you’ll love this episode. And if you haven’t seen them yet, hopefully we’ve inspired you to check them out—and pass the recommendations along to your friends.

109 - Favorites of 2025 pt. 1 (feat. Sonja Mereu): One Battle After Another, Sinners, & No Other Choice19 Jan 202601:48:27

It’s that time of year! Bella, Nick, and Gimme Three Producer Sonja Mereu start our Favorite Films of 2025 Series with three excellent selections.

Since these are 2025 releases, we do want to warn our listeners that we get into some spoilers for all three films we discuss.

  • We start with Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically-charged epic and Best Picture contender, One Battle After Another

  • Second, the movie that took the cinematic world by storm earlier this Spring - the powerfully, sexually-charged vampire film Sinners by Ryan Coogler.

  • Finally, Park Chan-wook delivers a remarkably pertinent, emotional, and wildly funny social satire with No Other Choice

Did you see these 2025 masterpieces? What’d you think of them? What was your favorite film of 2025?

106 - A Very '90s New Year! (feat. Sonja Mereu): 200 Cigarettes, Four Rooms, & Strange Days30 Dec 202501:23:36

Join Nick and Sonja as they ring in the New Year the best way they know how - by going back to the 1990s. In this episode, we visit '90s New Year's films!

  • We start with the 1999 MTV Films production of 200 Cigarettes. Sure, it takes place in 1981, but the film is still oozing with all of the '90s tropes and charm you can’t get enough of.

  • Second, we visit the anthology film by Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Alexandre Rockwell, and Allison Anders, in which Tim Roth stars. Four Rooms.

  • Finally, we look at the dystopian action thriller that’s co-written by James Cameron and directed by Kathryn Bigelow: the underappreciated masterpiece, Strange Days
