S3E10 States Rights vs Federal Rights12 May 202500:56:11

The Constitution has been the guiding document for the United State of America for nearly 250 years. The documents cover a wide range of issues which make it possible for people in a large, diverse country to live peacefully and harmoniously, most of the time. One of the important topics it addresses is the issue of which powers are “reserved” for States and which powers are “enumerated” for Federal government. Of course, it is not always so clear. In this episode, Lamar Roth and Tom Klaus discuss the concept of states' rights, exploring its historical context, evolution, and current implications, particularly in relation to education. They examine the tension between federal and state powers, the role of the 10th Amendment, and the influence of federal policies on local education systems. The discussion highlights concerns over public funding and the quality of education, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to governance.

S3E1 - Conversation on The Social Dilemma - Part 1 06 Jan 202500:37:34

What is your relationship with social media? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Do you avoid it? What if there are good reasons to love it, hate it, and avoid it - all at once? In this podcast Lamar and Tom are joined by their friend, colleague, and charity culture catalyst Ed Shrager from London. They each had the assignment of watching the Netflix documentary/docudrama “The Social Dilemma” that provides an inside look at social media through the perspective of the people who developed it in the past…but now question its value. In this two-part podcast they discuss the film and its relevance. In this Part 1 they do their best movie critic impersonations by reviewing and rating the film. In Part 2 they will do a deeper dive in their discussion of the film focusing what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and the most critical takeaways each had from the film.

S2E19 - Donald Trump's Cabinet Picks and Our Thanksgiving Special25 Nov 202400:55:29

During this past couple of weeks President-elect Donald Trump has been making nominations for his cabinet. In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom talk about a few of his nominations. Please note, though, that politics and news changes quickly and so did at least one of his nominees discussed in this podcast. By the time we posted this podcast to the internet about 4 days later, the nominee had withdrawn. That’s how things happen sometimes, and so we have to be prepared to swerve and then keep going. Also, this podcast is also a Thanksgiving Holiday Special for Lamar and Tom as they really talk turkey (with occasional bad puns). And, of course, they talk a bit of Hawkeye football and basketball.

S2E18 - The 2024 Presidential Election11 Nov 202401:04:07

The 2024 Presidential Election

S2E15 - Quieting the Noise of this Political Season05 Aug 202400:51:24

Whether we like it, love it, or hate it, we are now in the midst of a full-blown Presidential campaign. The news just keeps happening. After the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden decided to end his run for a second term. He endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris, and all political parties are now in full campaign mode. As a result, conversations about politics will be unavoidable for most of us. Though we try to avoid politics in our podcast, we are going to try something a bit different. We are going to talk about the issues in the campaign (not the personalities) and offer some suggestions for how you can have similar conversations on political topics. This week we are going to focus on how you can silence the noise being produced by the campaigns and become more clear about how you feel about the issues. The links below will take you to some websites where you can learn more about media bias and where you can do your own fact checking…without the noise, without the pundits.

S2E14 - An Assassination Attempt and Turning Down the Temp22 Jul 202400:54:57

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

As we were preparing for our next podcast, former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. One bullet grazed his right ear and bullets struck three people in the audience. One died and two others were seriously wounded. In this episode, Lamar and Tom talk about the escalation of violent rhetoric in the 2024 U.S. Presidential campaign and the need to turn down the temperature by choosing our words and language more carefully. They discuss four suggestions for making this campaign more civil in the wake of the Trump assassination attempt, offered by Luke Hallam in his Persuasion article titled How to Walk Back from the Brink - https://www.persuasion.community/p/how-to-walk-back-from-the-brink?r=5pobe&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&triedRedirect=true

S2E13 - Excel Shooting Part 208 Jul 202400:47:56

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

CONTENT ADVISORY: THIS EPISODE OF GETTING TO 3RD SPACE WITH LAMAR AND TOM DISCUSSES A MASS SHOOTING, WITH FATALITIES, AND ITS AFTERMATH.

In our last podcast we started a conversation with Lamar about the February 25, 2016 mass shooting at Excel Industries in Hesston, Kansas. Lamar was the Director of Human Resources at Excel and his leadership role thrust him into the midst of dealing with the shooting and its aftermath on behalf of the company. That’s what we discussed in our last podcast.

Today, though, we are going to do a dive into the personal impact of the shooting for Lamar, his family, and his community.

Hesston, Kansas is a Mennonite community. Mennonites are a Christian sect which are often confused with the Amish because they share a religious history. Mennonites are one of three historic “peace” churches in the Christian tradition, the other two being Quakers and Church of Brethren. Lamar and his wife Karla grew up in Mennonite families and raised their children in the Mennonite church. Excel Industries was also owned by a Mennonite family and Hesston College, a Mennonite school, was founded in the community in 1909.

Knowing about these deep, pacifist Mennonite roots of Hesston, Kansas is important for understanding and appreciating both the trauma of the event on the people of the community and, also, how they responded.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen or watch the previous podcast that tells the story of the shooting, we hope you’ll do that before jumping into this one. It gives you important context for more fully appreciating this episode. You can link to that podcast here: https://youtu.be/4DdRiCDbtz4?si=gUsj7IStpa7biEh9.

We realize this may not be an easy topic for some of our listeners. If, by watching or listening to this podcast, you are affected and need to talk with someone, we encourage you to call or text 988 or go online to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

As we did in the last podcast, I’ll be serving as the interviewer and Lamar will be in the “guest role.” Now, I’ve opened the door to the Green Room and Lamar will join us in a moment.

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom! CONTENT ADVISORY: THIS EPISODE OF GETTING TO 3RD SPACE WITH LAMAR AND TOM DISCUSSES A MASS SHOOTING, WITH FATALITIES, AND ITS AFTERMATH. On February 25, 2016, Lamar Roth, cohost of Getting to 3rd Space with Lamar and Tom, was Director of Human Resources for Excel Manufacturing in Hesston, Kansas. Cedric Ford, an Excel employee, entered the building and began shooting. That day four people died, including Cedric, more than a dozen others were wounded, and many, many more in Hesston, Kansas were traumatized by the events. In this podcast, and the next episode, Lamar and Tom talk about the mass shooting. We realize this may not be an easy topic for some of our listeners. S3E9 - What Does it Mean to "Buy American"?28 Apr 202501:00:20

Do you “buy American?” If so, what does that mean?

Does it mean you “buy American” all of the time? Does it mean you purchase only those items that are both sourced and manufactured in the United States? Or, does it mean you purchase items that are “made in the USA” but with materials that come from outside the country? What about services?

To “buy American” may not be as easy as it once was, with or without tariffs. In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom talk about their experiences of buying American, how it has changed over time, and explore what it might mean today.

S2E11 - Conversation with Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn10 Jun 202400:59:09

Lamar and Tom talk with Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn

In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom welcome Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn. Senator McGinn has represented the 31st District as a Republican since 2005. Prior to serving in the Kansas Senate, she was a Sedgwick County Commissioner. She and her husband, Mark, own and operate McGinn’s Grapes and Grain, a family farm outside of Wichita, Kansas.

In 2012 Senator McGinn was one of nine Kansas senators whose seats were targeted by members of the “Right Wing” of the Republican party. She was the only one who was able to retain her seat.

In January 2025, Carolyn McGinn will retire from some 26 years in political life. She and Mark will focus their retirement on using their farm to promote agri-tourism. In this interview she reflects on her years in public service and talks with Lamar and Tom about the importance of civil dialogue and discussion in passing legislation to benefit communities.

A Getting to 3rd Space Redux: Barriers, Bears, & Gummy Bears (S1E3)27 May 202400:42:14

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

If you are in the United States, it is a holiday (Memorial Day). Tom’s out chasing a golf ball around a local golf course and Lamar is out taking more beautiful photos. At least, that’s what we hope we are doing today. In our absence, we are offering a redux of one of our earliest podcasts from October 21, 2023. We titled it Barriers, Bears, and Gummy Bears

We won’t say it is a “Best of” Getting to Third Space because we were still learning a lot about doing a podcast. However, the topic is important because it focuses on the barriers that often prevent us from having difficult but important conversations with family, friends, and peers. The barriers we consider are internal barriers - those attitudes, ideas, expectations, even beliefs we hold - that may hold us back from engaging in civil conversation with people whose ideas, opinions, experiences, and lives are different from our own. Then we offer four guidelines for overcoming or “checking” those barriers to make it easier to engage others.

Finally, we talk about bears. :-)

We hope you enjoy hearing it again (or for the first time). And we hope you are doing something relaxing and fun today as well…whether it is a holiday or not where you live. We’ll be back with a new podcast on June 10th. See you then!

S2E10 - A Table Talk about Gun Regulation13 May 202400:48:14

About Today’s Episode - A Table Talk on Gun Regulation

Today’s show features a Table Talk about gun regulation. You’ll remember that Table Talk is a new, occasional feature that we’ll include in Getting to Third Space. It was inspired by the kitchen table in the farm homes we grew up in where it was a central gathering place. Not only did we eat there, but we played games, entertained guests, and had conversations. Sometimes the conversations were light and fun. Sometimes they were serious conversations about differing ideas and perspectives on important issues. The subjects being tackled in our Table Talks have no simple solution so don’t expect us to resolve anything. However, they allow us to both experience and model many of the concepts and tools we’ve been discussing in this podcast. Before issues can be resolved, we have to be able to talk about them in a civil conversation, especially when we disagree. We hope our Table Talks will inspire and guide you to have your own Table Talks on this and other subjects.

In our first Table Talk we discussed self-driving vehicles. In this one we move into a more controversial top with two important questions: 1) Should gun ownership be regulated? And, if so, 2) how should gun ownership be regulated?

S2E9 A Table Talk about Self-Driving Vehicles29 Apr 202400:37:04

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

In this episode we introduce a new feature for the podcast: Table Talk. In the farm homes where we both grew up, the kitchen table was a central gathering place. Not only did we eat there, but we played games, entertained guests, and had conversations. Sometimes the conversations were light and fun. Sometimes they were serious conversations about differing ideas and perspectives on important issues. In this Table Talk, we will pose a question and then discuss it together, much in the same way we would as if we were sitting around one of our kitchen tables having a conversation.

We hope our Table Talks will inspire and guide you to have your own Table Talks on this and other subjects. .

Today we begin with the topic of self-driving vehicles and this question: Do we really need self-driving vehicles?

S2E3 - Lamar & Tom Talk About Third PLACES05 Feb 202400:48:27

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

In this podcast Lamar & Tom talk about third spaces and third places. explore what and where the third space is and if we just visit or if we reside there. During our interview with Seth Kaplan in the last podcast, he responded to a question about what Tom and I could do to build trust in communities. Seth suggested that it is important to literally share the table with others. Eat meals, drink, and socialize together as a way to build trust. Oftentimes in the literature, a Third Space is also referred to as a Third Place. This subtle but relevant difference may be leading us to consider the Third Space being a more “literal place”.  Today, we will explore the Third Place and more…

S2E8 - Truth, Truthiness, and Not So Truthy Conversations14 Apr 202500:46:52

Civil conversations and dialogue are made more difficult when participants are not speaking honestly, are simply parroting the ideas of others, or are unwilling to consider being changed through dialogue. In this episode, Lamar and Tom talk about conversations in which truth is illusive, and truthiness is not valued.

Meet Lamar, Tom, and Getting to Third Space (Trailer)08 Jan 202400:01:48

Isn't it time you checked us out?

Join Lamar Roth & Tom Klaus (two former clergy, former counselors, and still lifelong friends) in this newish podcast on how to talk with one another. Together they explore how to get to a Third Space - a space where two or more people with opposing viewpoints, ideologies, and worldviews can come together to hear, listen, share, and connect with one another. Together Lamar and Tom hope to carve out a Third Space where everything can be on the table for open, straightforward, honest, and, yet kind and respectful inquiry.

Honestly, getting to Third Space has proven to be increasingly difficult over the past few years.

The idea for Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom was planted during the COVID-19 pandemic as the two talked frequently about the divisions created by the virus and vaccinations. Together they puzzled over the information and disinformation being circulated. They were both amazed and saddened as people began to line up on opposite sides of this, and other issues facing our country. Together they wondered how to create a space for people to begin to hear, listen, and appreciate one another again. Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom was born.

Both Lamar and Tom have enjoyed interesting and fulfilling careers. Lamar was a licensed, practicing psychotherapist, a college administrator, and human resource director. Tom was a social service program developer, executive director, and educator.

Today Lamar is an accomplished photographer and Tom is a mediocre golfer. Though they live half a continent apart, they grew up near each other in rural Iowa. They first met in high school and have been friends ever since.

Besides double dating once or twice in high school, this is not Lamar & Tom’s first collaboration. In the 1990’s they co-wrote a counseling book together that was used as text in several schools around the U.S.

Today they are collaborating on Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom. The podcast is produced by Tenacious Change, a consultancy serving nonprofit organizations, agencies, and small businesses founded by Tom in 2013.

Lamar & Tom just wrapped the first season but you can catch up. Season 2 starts in January.

Come on in! We'd love for you to join us!

S2E1 - A Conversation with Seth Kaplan-Part 108 Jan 202400:54:31

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

To kick-off Season 2, Lamar & Tom have a special guest. Seth Kaplan is the author of a new book titled “Fragile Neighborhoods.” Seth Kaplan is recognized globally for his expertise in “fragile states.” A “fragile state” is one that has experienced the loss of physical control of its territory or a monopoly on the legitimate use of force; an erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions; an inability to provide reasonable public services; and the inability to interact with other states as a full member of the international community. Briefly put, it is a state that has become highly unstable. In “Fragile Neighborhoods” Seth argues that neighborhoods can similarly experience fragility and proposes a path to greater resilience and flourishing.

Seth Kaplan holds a number of positions related to his expertise on “fragile states.” He is a Professorial Lecturer in the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University, a Senior Adviser for the Institute for Integrated Transitions (IFIT), and a consultant to multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, U.S. State Department, U.S. Agency for International Development, and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development as well as developing country governments and NGOs.

S1E3 - Barriers, Bears, and Gummy Bears20 Oct 202300:41:10

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

In this podcast, released on October 21, 2023, Lamar & Tom discuss barriers and guidelines for productive civil conversations. The barriers they consider are internal barriers - those attitudes, ideas, expectations, even beliefs we hold - that may hold us back from engaging in civil conversation with people whose ideas, opinions, experiences, and lives are different from our own. Then they offer four guidelines for overcoming or “checking” those barriers to make it easier to engage others.

They also take a moment to talk about and enjoy the antics of bears. You can see the source of their merriment at these two links:

S1E2 - Noam Chomsky, Exhausted Americans, & Bob the Old Goat26 Sep 202300:40:26

Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom!

In this podcast, released on September 26, 2023, they discuss this quote, submitted by a listener, from Noam Chomsky, which appeared in his 1998 book, “The Common Good.”

“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum. That gives people the sense of that there is free thinking going on while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limit put on the range of the debate.”

They also take a look at new Pew Research Center research that shows Americans have a dismal view of politics. (Who knew, huh?)

They “honor” a Republican, a Democrat, and Gymnastics Ireland with the prestigious Stupidcallousfrackinidioticandobnoxious award.

Finally, they wrap up with the first Third Space Champions award to the city of Ingersoll, Ontario for granting a bit of grace to Bob, an elderly goat.

S3E5 A Table Talk on the Early Days of the New Administration03 Mar 202501:01:29

What is new was old. What is old is new again. This is true of many things, including politics. On January 20th Donald J. Trump became President of the United States again for the second time. It has been a fast-paced and interesting (some would say “frightening”) few weeks. In this podcast Lamar and Tom scootch up to the kitchen table, pour a cup of coffee, and talk about what has been happening. Join us!

S3E4 - Heidi & Guy Burgess - Part 217 Feb 202501:08:34

Part 2 of 2. Lamar and Tom talk with Heidi and Guy Burgess who have been life and professional partners for more than 50 years. They received their PhDs in sociology in the same year from the University of Colorado.

In the late 1980s they received a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to start a conflict resolution "theory-building center" that is now known as the Conflict Information Consortium. In addition to directing the Consortium, both Guy and Heidi taught peace and conflict at the University of Colorado, the University of Denver, and in George Mason University's School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, now the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

As Co-Directors of the Consortium, the Burgesses have been able to self-design rather unusual careers which combined theory building, practice, and teaching using theories and strategies from many disciplines, not just sociology.  Drawn to complexity and systems theory very early by Kenneth Boulding's work, they almost always tried to focus on the big picture, focusing particularly on difficult conflict problems from international conflicts to environmental and public policy conflicts in the United States.

In the early 1990's they also began focusing on the use of computer-based information systems and the Internet to disseminate conflict knowledge to as many people as possible. This resulted in the development of two extremely large knowledge bases: CRInfo (The Conflict Resolution Information Source) and the follow-on Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project which produced a second very large online knowledge base called Beyond Intractability (BI)

The Burgess' current focus is on hyper-polarization and constructive approaches to conflict. They have a free Substack newsletter that focuses on those topics, and will soon be releasing (on BI) a free guide (i.e., growing online book) on those topics.

S3E2 - More Conversation on The Social Dilemma - Part 2 20 Jan 202500:44:33

What is your relationship with social media? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Do you avoid it? What if there are good reasons to love it, hate it, and avoid it - all at once? In this podcast Lamar and Tom are joined by their friend, colleague, and charity culture catalyst Ed Shrager from London. They each had the assignment of watching the Netflix documentary/docudrama “The Social Dilemma” that provides an inside look at social media through the perspective of the people who developed it in the past…but now question its value. In this two-part podcast they discuss the film and its relevance. In this episode, Part 2, they will do a deeper dive in their discussion of the film focusing what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and the most critical takeaways each had from the film.  In Part 1 they do their best movie critic impersonations by reviewing and rating the film. If you haven’t listened to or watched Part 1, we recommend you do that before diving into Part 2.
