He was a founding member and the leader of the 13th Floor Elevators and a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre. Erickson was interested in music from his youth, playing piano from age five and taking up guitar at 10. He attended school in Austin and dropped out of Travis High School in 1965, one month before graduating, rather than cut his hair to conform to the school dress code.Erickson wrote his first songs, "You're Gonna Miss Me" and "We Sell Soul", at age 15, and started a band with neighborhood friends which would evolve into his first notable group, the Spades.The Spades scored a regional hit with "We Sell Soul"; the song is included as an unlisted bonus track on Erickson's 1995 album All That May Do My Rhyme and was adapted as "Don't Fall Down" by the 13th Floor Elevators for their debut album. RockerMike and Rob interview The Penetrators were founded by lead singer Jack Lipton and multi-instrumentalist Eliot (Spike) Kagan in Syracuse, NY in August, 1976. What happened when Garage Rock met Punk Rock in the cold climes of upstate NY? "Formed in 76 as punk was exploding, The Penetrators kicked out their own unique twisted version of garage rock... snotty, loud and amateur as can be." This duo of Syracuse music makers released their second 45 in 1979 ("Teenage Lifestyle/Rock 'n' Roll Face") to further critical acclaim and won a spot on Killed By Death #19 in 1998 for their efforts. Originally intended as a studio project, Jack and Spike wasted no time putting together a live performing unit in 1980, whose efforts were captured on the soundboard bootleg cassette recording released in 2001 on Rave Up Records of Rome, Italy: "Live at Kenny's 1980."  Other 1979/1980 releases included the two-sided release of "The Scandalizer/Drive Me Crazy" by (respectively) Curtis Seals and Christian D'Orbit, and Eliot (Spike) Kagan's 4 track "solo" EP: "SPIKE!"  In 1982, The Penetrators recorded and immortalized on video the classic track that MTV would not show on their Basement Tapes show: "Shopping Bag". All this musical productivity and hard work led to their studio efforts being released by Venus Records (FRED 0) on the album "Kings of Basement Rock" in 1988.  "Kings of Basement Rock" was subsequently reissued twice on two other labels - by Rave Up Records in 2000 and by Slovenly Records in 2013.  A CD anthology of their studio and live efforts, "Basement Anthology", was released by Swami Records in 2005. RockerMike and Rob Presents: Roxanne Fontana Roxanne Fontana (born Roseann Fontana 2 September 1959) is a dual-national Italian American author, singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, poet, actress, and clothing and jewelry designer. Fontana was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. Her parents were working class Italian-Americans from Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant slums. Fontana spent her childhood in the 1960s a few blocks from the childhood home of writer Arthur Miller, in the predominantly Italian and Jewish neighbourhood of the part of Brooklyn bordering Midwood and Bensonhurst. It was here in 1968 that she developed an interest in fashion design after a child modelling try-out in a Lexington Avenue agency in New York City. Fontana developed her songwriting, guitar playing, singing and journal writing, living in Elmont, Long Island, US, during the 1970s. From 1960 to 1976, they performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, supported by Ike Turner's band the Kings of Rhythm and backing vocalists called the Ikettes. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was regarded as "one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit." The duo had a string of R&B hits with their early recordings "A Fool In Love", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "I Idolize You", "Poor Fool", and "Tra La La La La". The release of "River Deep – Mountain High" in 1966, followed by a tour of the UK with The Rolling Stones, increased their popularity in Europe. Their later works are noted for interpretive soul-infused re-arrangements of rock songs such as "Come Together", "Honky Tonk Woman", and "Proud Mary", the latter of which won them a Grammy Award in 1972.Ike & Tina Turner received the first Golden European Record Award for their international hit "Nutbush City Limits" in 1974.They released dozens of albums; their most successful being Workin' Together and Live at Carnegie Hall. The group originally formed as My Backyard in 1964 and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) and Bob Burns (drums). The band spent five years touring small venues under various names and with several lineup changes before deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. The band released its first album in 1973, having settled on a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King. Burns left and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. King left in 1975 and was replaced by Steve Gaines in 1976. At the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". In the 2010s, all the other original members except Kendall Jones rejoined the band for various reunions and anniversary activities. Richard Reinhardt (born August 11, 1957) is an American drummer best known by his stage name Richie Ramone, and for being the drummer for the punk band the Ramones, from February 1983 until August 1987. He was the only Ramones drummer to be credited as the sole composer and writer of a Ramone's song, writing six in total and as of 2020, he is one of the four surviving members of the band (the others being Marky Ramone, Elvis Ramone, and C.J. The Beatles, also known colloquially as the White Album, is the ninth studio album and only double album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 22 November 1968. Featuring a plain white sleeve, the cover contains no graphics or text other than the band's name embossed. This was intended as a direct contrast to the vivid cover artwork of the band's previous LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles is recognised for its fragmentary style and diverse range of genres, including folk, British blues, ska, music hall and the avant-garde. It has since been viewed by some critics as a postmodern work, as well as among the greatest albums of all time. The album features 30 songs, 19 of which were written during March and April 1968 at a Transcendental Meditation course in Rishikesh, India. There, the only western instrument available to the band was the acoustic guitar; several of these songs remained acoustic on The Beatles and were recorded solo, or only by part of the group. The production aesthetic ensured that the album's sound was scaled-down and less reliant on studio innovation than most of their releases since Revolver (1966). The Ramones formed in March of 1974 and broke up in August of 1996 and Monte A. Melnick was a witness to almost every moment of their groundbreaking and influential career. But his connection to the band goes back even further—to junior high school and their Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens. In his wonderful book On The Road With The Ramones (Sanctuary), he details his time with the band, which included traveling with them for most of their 2,263 live shows. Some people have called him “The Fifth Ramone,” which is fitting (though he is uncomfortable with the designation), because there is no one who spent more time or had closer physical proximity to the band then Monte, especially since his job was not limited to days when the band was on tour; it was a fifty-two-week-a-year gig of solving problems and negotiating the oversized and increasingly at odds personalities of the band members, while keeping the Ramones machine moving forward through 22 years of highs and lows, personnel changes, and music business baloney. After speaking with him, I can understand how he was able to last so long in such a challenging position. Fox has been referred to by many Polish media correspondents and others as a 'recognized pioneer' in this venture, of creating the first representation in the U.S., of the Polish winged hussar cavalry of central Europe which, apparently, is a part of his ancestry. RockerMike and Rob discuss the band UFO. UFO are an English rock band that was formed in London in 1968.They became a transitional group between early hard rock and heavy metal and the new wave of British heavy metal. The band's current lineup includes vocalist Phil Mogg, lead guitarist Vinnie Moore, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Neil Carter, bass guitarist Rob De Luca, and drummer Andy Parker. They have gone through several line-up changes, leaving Mogg as the only constant member, and had two hiatuses (1983–1984 and again from 1989 to 1991). The band are also notable for featuring former Scorpions guitarist and MSG founder Michael Schenker, who was a member of UFO from 1973 to 1978 and again, occasionally, between 1993 and 2003, when Moore replaced him. Veronica Yvette Greenfield (née Bennett; August 10, 1943 – January 12, 2022), known professionally as Ronnie Spector, was an American singer. Referred to as the original "bad girl of rock and roll", she was the lead singer of the girl group the Ronettes. Ronnie formed a singing group, the Darling Sisters, with her elder sister, Estelle Bennett, and their cousin, Nedra Talley in the late 1950s. Later known as the Ronettes, they were signed to Phil Spector's Philles label and he produced the majority of their recording output.
