This audiobook probes institutional life through nine fascinating profiles.
In the words of its author: "The unalloyed truth is that I'm in thrall to idiosyncrasy. It possibly could be said that I actually love pathology. Well, let me explain: It's that I love to be near it, to see it, to observe it with a clinical eye. I feel strongly sympathetic toward people who are severely and emotionally and psychologically ill. I see pathology as an expressionist and Cubist rendition of reality."
You will not soon forget these nine stories or how Dr. Kellerman deals with the delusional, the unusual, and the strange, in a modern setting.

Title: How Much Brain Do We Really Need?
Author: Jennifer Barnett, Alexis Willett
Narrator: Jane Slavin
Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 40 mins
Language: English
Release date: 12-07-17
Publisher: Little Brown
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
How Much Brain Do We Really Need? challenges you to think differently about the brain. Rather than solely concentrating on the many wonderful things the brain can do, it asks whether in fact we can live satisfactorily without some of it.
It turns out that brain shrinkage, for instance, is no rare thing. While the bad news for all of us is that from our mid-30s our brains start to shrink, the good news is that somehow we generally still seem to muddle along. But how can this be? Does this mean we don't really need all of our brain? How Much Brain Do We Really Need? aims to shed light on what the human brain can do - in both optimal and suboptimal conditions and in the past, present and future - and considers what it may do without.
To help you decide how much brain we really need, you'll be presented with facts and figures, case studies and hypothetical scenarios, expert interviews and scientific principles. You'll be taken on a journey from the ancient mists of time to the far reaches of the future, via different species and lands. This book reflects on why we have so much brain in the first place and what distinguishes us from other species. It considers how we define what a working brain needs to be able to do, from the basics of survival to the highest levels of human achievement. And by looking at what is known about normal variation in brain function and assessing it alongside cases of people who live without wholly functioning brains, it ponders whether we need so much brain and whether a little bit of shrinkage does us any harm after all.
To round things off, the authors dust off their crystal ball to contemplate future possibilities for the human brain. How Much Brain Do We Really Need? tackles diverse questions, such as: whether brain training or being a 'Super Ager' is the key to healthy ageing; whether drinking coffee or going for a run is better for our cognitive performance; whether women really experience the 'baby brain'; whether screen time is ruining our brains; and, of course, whether marmosets make good detectives!
Whether you know a lot or little about the brain already, it's hoped that there are things in the book that make you go 'ooh, that's interesting - I didn't know that'.

Release date: 12-05-17
Publisher: PositiveMindHub
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
Both affirmation and hypnosis can be very effective in treating phobias. Both techniques have shown various degrees of effectiveness in managing object phobias, social phobias, and situational phobias. Making things even better is the fact that you can use these two techniques together and even with other therapeutic techniques to achieve maximum results. For these reasons, people are asking where they can get affirmation and hypnosis treatments for phobias.
Thanks to the rising popularity of these methods, getting either treatment for phobia resolution is easier than ever before. One great thing about using affirmation as a treatment is the fact that you can do it yourself. Once you are oriented with how it is done, you can virtually perform it anywhere, may it be at your home, at work, while traveling, or even during your daily commute. There are many positive affirmation books available in both printed and electronic forms, filled with mantras you can use to boost your positive thoughts. There are also websites containing affirmations, with some contributed by other people using affirmations to overcome their fears. You can get professional help if you want to understand affirmation better, and there are support groups available that will help you get the most out of this technique.
Affirmation and hypnosis are two alternative phobia treatment methods that are fast becoming popular. Helping people overcome their fears in their own unique ways, both do so in a manner that doesn't have a negative effect on the person's well-being. Before undergoing either treatment, it is important that you understand how each method works.

Title: Manage Your Mindset
Subtitle: Maximize Your Power of Personal Choice
Author: Janet Hanson
Narrator: Suzie Althens
Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 59 mins
Language: English
Release date: 11-17-17
Publisher: Vibrance Press
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
As the foremost researcher in the area of correlating mindset with a variety of organizational learning factors, having performed a survey validation study of the Mindset Works, Inc. What's My School Mindset? Survey and the Project for Educational Research That Scales (PERTS) academic mindset survey, the author has discovered links between the philosophical positions one holds and the theory of mind that describes what makes humans different from animals. This book proposes that the ability to recognize and respond to the differences between what we "see" and others "see" is the key reason for individuals, groups, and organizations to succeed or to fail. How we perceive differences and respond to them changes the way our brain develops and how our systems are designed.
This book provides strategies for supporting continuous development and growth in individuals, in group dynamics, and in system/organizational development using the most current understanding and propositions of theories of mind. Our theories of physics are expanding through Newtonian, classical, and on to quantum. Our technologies are expanding from simple tools to industrialization to digital information systems and on to holographic imagery and virtual realities. Biological understandings have grown from magical beliefs about life through static views of fixed DNA to cloning and the potential to regenerate organs and extend life.
Our world is in need of an update on the social transformations occurring in human understanding that apply to addressing key issues of our day. This book revisits the concepts discussed in mindset theory and reframes it with a larger, more inclusive potential for understanding our world that empowers our ability for personal choice to improve our lives.

Title: Isolation: A Battered Woman's Reality
Subtitle: The Narcissist's and Abuser's Efforts to Control
Author: J. B. Snow
Narrator: D. Gaunt
Format: Unabridged
Length: 28 mins
Language: English
Release date: 10-09-17
Publisher: JB Snow Publishing
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
Many victims don't realize it, but the constant efforts of the narcissist to isolate the victim are the result of him wanting her under his complete control. The narcissist's partner is to be critiqued, blamed, shamed, isolated, and gaslighted into utter and complete submission to him. The narcissist is a hedonist and a sadist, and the only thing that he wants from his prospective partners are blind loyalty, ignorance, compliance, and cooperation.
The narcissist views his wife or partner as "his". She is his possession, even if she doesn't feel like he cherishes her on any level. More often, he treats her poorly so that she does not get a "big head" and leave him for a better alpha. The narcissist knows deep down that women are not naturally monogamous, but that they will often leave a beta or alpha man turned beta in seek of a better alpha. He has witnessed this happen to his friends, family members and acquaintances. He has heard from other men who have been victimized by women, thus he cannot let this woman get the "upper hand", no siree!
The delicate ego of the narcissist cannot tolerate "losing" his partner to another mate, because he believes in his own specialness. His competitive nature is due to his evolutionary need to procreate and pass his legacy along to future generations, though he won't claim to know why he does many of the things that he does.
His family of origin has a need for their legacy to be passed on, thus he will be supported in his desire to control his partner and the children that she bore for him. He is told to keep her in her place at all costs. He must ensure his children are reared to also be respectful and controlled and obedient.
To not do so earns great scorn and disrespect from his parents and grandparents, as he has lost control of his own household to a member of the weaker sex! Blame, shame and rejection are not tolerated by the competitive narcissist! He best not be disrespected by anyone! If someone dishes it out to him, they best be prepared to take his wrath and the wrath of his narcissistic family members!
Many of the narcissist's needs, wants and desires cannot be explained by him. He goes along with his impulses, urges and instincts because they feel good. He is a hedonist in that he much prefers a life of pleasure over pain. He might identify with a religion if his family has brainwashed him into identifying with one, or he may convert to a religion which suits his hedonistic desires in order to have an excuse for his ill-mannered behavior.
This audiobook seeks to examine the devastation that is caused by the very act of isolating his partner in nearly all realms of her life and her existence. Omniscience and omnipresence is the ultimate goal of the narcissistic partner. He must be everything that there is in her world, less he risks losing her to the competition.

Title: The Dark Triad Strategies
Subtitle: Tools of Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Manipulative People
Author: J. B. Snow
Narrator: Pete Beretta
Format: Unabridged
Length: 26 mins
Language: English
Release date: 10-03-17
Publisher: JB Snow Publishing
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
If you are here, chances are good that you have been a victim of the "dark triad" strategies which are employed by people with seemingly "bad" or "evil" personalities or behaviors. There are those who are born with "bad" or "evil" or "anti-social" personalities. There are those who are born with pro-social and empathetic personalities. Then, there are those who use "dark triad" strategies as a means of gaining immense personal power, financial gain, and sexual prowess.
It is a fact that most women, due to evolution, are strongly drawn to the "bad" boy or the "alpha" male because he has the most resources: money, status, power, friends, a good family, good genes, strength, protective qualities, etc. It is also a fact, however, that alpha men are the first ones to want attention from multiple females, encouraging their predisposition for cheating.
These alpha males might have healthy levels of narcissism which give them a competitive edge over the beta males, or he may be employing or feigning the dark triad strategies which give him the advantage. One of these features makes him a worthy alpha male, while the other actually makes him such a bad boy that a woman risks being thrown under the bus, murdered, framed, abused, or blackmailed when she sticks it out with the alpha bad boy.
Most women will not tolerate cheating, and thus might break up the family in order to introduce a better alpha or a beta male who will be more likely to stick around. Because most women are intensely attracted to the top percentage of alpha males, they have a tendency to ignore the beta males (the "nice" guys) in favor of the mean or "evil" bad boy types. Don't blame it on the women, but blame it on the needs of evolution (the strongest genes are meant to survive to encourage future generations).
The intelligent man or street smart man knows that by covering up his weaknesses, faults, and deficits, he can project the illusion that he is mysterious, perfect, strong, charming and more. He can use superficial and glib charm to essentially "fake it till you make it".
Men (and some women) use the dark triad personality traits in order to get ahead in life, love, industry, business, college, and many other areas. The dark triad personality is prevalent in all high offices, including law enforcement, court rooms, politics, the military, and more. These institutions (along with corporations) encourage self-love and self-promotion in order to gain higher pay and status. This is part of our "civilized" society.
Unfortunately, the encouragement of dark triad strategies encourages cutthroat moves in life. People who are mostly civil, laid-back, non-competitive, pro-social, empathetic, and sympathetic will be harmed by those who are aiming for cut-throat competitiveness in order to get ahead. These people will suffer at the hands of the cutthroat competition.

Not many people will tell you that they are motivated by their jobs. In fact, we would wager that most people would say they are not motivated by their jobs at all and that if they didn't need the money, they wouldn't be at their current jobs. In other words, they are not motivated. Dan Ariely, in his book, Payoff, discusses what really motivates people and surprisingly, it is not money. What motivates is an underlying sense of meaning. Here we will summarize and analyze Payoff. Enjoy!

Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook will come as a surprise to you if you have not heard the words directly out of the mouth of the narcissist as to how he truly views women.
We know that he is playing the game, and that he is role-modeling his narcissistic and player behavior from his peers and mentors. The narcissist often does not form much of his own opinion on what he likes and dislikes.
He uses the definition of the perfect woman that has been drilled into his head by his peers, his parents, and other influential people in his life.
As a social experiment, we have tackled the online dating world as it pertains to narcissists. We have asked random questions to the narcissist to see exactly what he is thinking. The anonymous narcissist was all too willing to spew how negatively he viewed all women, not just particular women.
The narcissist isn't able to discern one woman from another, and he doesn't cherish any one woman. He thinks that women are interchangeable. He even lacks the overall motivation to make an attempt to sexually please a woman, and hence prefers voyeurism, casual chatting, or porn over an actual romantic relationship.
Join us as we pick apart the narcissist's casual inner and outer dialog as it relates to dating, relationships, and marriage.

According to acquired needs theory, there are three kinds of people: those who seek power, those who seek adulation, and those who seek accomplishment. All people desire all three, but in any given person one of these desires predominates. The identity of the dominant desire is fixed by one's innate psychological constitution, but the exact manner in which one goes about fulfilling this desire is determined by experience.

Title: Madness and Creativity

Narrator: Kathy Bell Denton
Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 29 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-10-17
Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
Analyst and author Ann Belford Ulanov draws on her years of clinical work and reflection to make the point that madness and creativity share a kinship, an insight that shakes both analysis and analyst to the core, reminding us as it does that the suffering places of the human psyche are inextricably -- and, often inexplicably -- related to the fountains of creativity, service, and even genius. She poses disturbing questions: How do we depend on order, when chaos is a necessary part of existence? What are we to make of evil -- both that surrounding us and that within us? Is there a myth of meaning that can contain all the differences that threaten to shatter us?
Ulanov's insights unfold in conversation with themes in Jung's Red Book which, according to Jung, present the most important experiences of his life, themes he explicated in his subsequent theories.
Responding to some of Jung's more fantastic encounters as he illustrated them, Ulanov suggests that our problems and compulsions may show us the path our creativity should take. With Jung she asserts that the multiplicities within and around us are, paradoxically, pieces of a greater whole that can provide healing and unity as, in her words, "every part of us and of our world gets a seat at the table." Madness and Creativity stands as a carefully crafted presentation, with many clinical examples of human courage and fulfillment.

Language: English
Release date: 07-06-17
Publisher: Random House Audiobooks
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook will introduce you to ten people. In a way, you already know them. Only you don't - not really. In a sense, they are you. Only they're not entirely. They inform and shape the most important decisions in your life. But you're almost certainly unaware of their intervention.
They are the Ten Types of Human. Who are they? What are they for? How did they get into your head? We want to believe that there are some things we would never do. We want to believe that there are others we always would. But how can we be sure? What are our limits? Do we have limits? The answer lies with the Ten Types of Human: the people we become when we are faced with life's most difficult decisions. But who or what are these types? Where do they come from? How did they get into our heads?
The Ten Types of Human is a pioneering examination of human nature. It looks at the best and worst that human beings are capable of and asks why. It explores the frontiers of the human experience, excavating the forces that shape our thoughts and actions in extreme situations. It begins in a courtroom and journeys across four continents and through the lives of some exceptional people, in search of answers.
Mixing cutting-edge neuroscience, social psychology and human rights research, The Ten Types of Human is at once a provocation and a map to our hidden selves. It provides a new understanding of who we are - and who we can be.

Sitting inside a class, one student finds it easy to absorb information while another struggles with it. While one learner may excel in a particular subject, another may do well in all the subjects. Trainees go through the same training to be graded differently according to the level of information they have absorbed and the understanding they show. Learning is a complex process.
It takes years for a person to understand certain subjects and he still works his way out of life with limited information because it is difficult to imbibe the overwhelming amount of knowledge present in the world today.
Depending on how information is absorbed, processed, and retained, a number of learning theories have been formulated which help us understand the process of learning in individuals.
A number of factors decide the manner in which knowledge is acquired or information is processed by a person changing their views on certain subjects and forming new views about certain things.
Learning is related with different parts of the brain which plays an important role in processing any information that we receive. Every individual processes the information differently based on their strengths and weaknesses.
Educational psychology endeavors to gain an understanding about the different behaviors of an individual to a piece of information. This is used in analyzing the type of learning that can affect the individual the most.
Different schools of thoughts are available for finding out how education and information is absorbed by a learner. This book aims at exploring the different learning theories that currently exist and understanding the roots of the theory and gaining an insight into the reasons why these theories exist.

Pauline first became ill when she was 15. What seemed to be a urinary infection became joint pain, then life-threatening appendicitis. After a routine operation, Pauline lost all the strength in her legs. Shortly afterwards, convulsions started. But Pauline's tests are normal: her symptoms seem to have no physical cause whatsoever.
This may be an extreme case, but Pauline is not alone. As many as a third of people visiting their GPs have symptoms that are medically unexplained. In most an emotional root is suspected, which is often the last thing a patient wants to hear and a doctor to say.
We accept our hearts can flutter with excitement and our brows can sweat with nerves, but on this journey into the very real world of psychosomatic illness, Suzanne O'Sullivan finds the secrets we are all capable of keeping from ourselves.
Critic Reviews:
"Doctors' tales of their patients' weirder afflictions have been popular since Oliver Sacks.... Few of them, however, are as bizarre or unsettling, as those described in this extraordinary and extraordinarily compassionate book." (James McConnachie, Sunday Times)
"A fascinating glimpse into the human condition...a forceful call for society to be more open about such suffering." (Ian Birrell, Daily Mail)

Narrator: Rich Miller
Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 33 mins
Language: English
Release date: 08-03-16
Publisher: Science Literacy Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 13 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
This book presents research that supports the naturalistic stance that the mind is identical to the brain. The author argues that if one were to look at the idea that the mind is the brain, then it follows logically that free will must be an illusion, that there can be no consciousness separate from the brain, and that there can be no substantial self that exists independently from the brain. He further argues that there can be no such thing as absolute moral responsibility and provides listeners with the overall sense that the survival of the human species will depend on a scientific understanding of the human brain.

Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 42 mins

Publisher: Macat International Limited.
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
Neurologist Oliver Sacks' 1985 book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat challenges the impersonal approach doctors took to patient care and paved the way for a new literary genre: popular science.
At the time of its publication, neurologists and physicians relied mainly on clinical studies and their own expertise to set the course of treatment. Sacks found this inhumane and developed a very different approach, clearly demonstrated in The Man Who Mistook His Wife. He provides rich, narrative case studies of his patients, believing that neurology had lost sight of the high personal costs paid by those with neurological disorders. To this end, Sacks focuses on how patients cope with these disorders and their altered sense of self. Sacks talks of "romantic science", casting the patients in his 24 case studies almost as literary heroes and heroines, and borrowing from the realms of art, literature, and psychology to do so.
This new approach proved very popular. As Sacks himself said, "To my intense surprise this book hit some nerve in the reading public, and became an instant best seller."

Title: Will I Ever Be the Same Again?
Subtitle: Transforming the Face of ECT (Shock Therapy)
Author: Carol A. Kivler
Narrator: Deb Thomas
Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 9 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-27-16
Publisher: eBookIt.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
Blessed with a loving family, a successful business as an executive coach, and money in the bank, Carol Kivler was suddenly and unexpectedly brought to her knees by "The Beast" - clinical depression. The story of her journey to recovery from medication-resistant depression is not only informative, but it inspires hope in others who suffer from this debilitating illness.
Kivler's book is written for multiple audiences, especially individuals who are suffering from major depression and their loved ones. It is also for health care providers, who often make the difference between giving up and recovery for those suffering from mental illness. Her Courageous Recovery Wellness Model provides a road map for recovery while addressing the misconceptions and stigma associated with depression.
Major depression is not an attitude. It is not a personality dysfunction. It is not a flaw in character. It is not laziness or a call for attention. It is not hurt feelings or a reaction to a bump in the road. It is not contagious. Depression is not something that can be brought on or fought off by self-will. Depression is not something to be ashamed of. And, most importantly, it is not something that should be ignored. Left untreated, serious depression can be life crippling and even lead to death (by suicide).
Because medication did not work for her, and despite serious reservations, Kivler eventually agreed to ECT (electroconvulsive therapy, or shock therapy). The treatment gave her back not only the desire to live but the ability to thrive in her personal and professional lives. Electroconvulsive therapy became her ladder out of the depression pit.

Publisher's Summary:
You have probably heard, and perhaps even used to hear, that people with a higher intelligence quotient - the famous IQ - are the ones that do best in their professional careers. What you might not know is that there is another kind of intelligence, emotional, that seems to be the secret behind many successful people.
If this type of intelligence is emotional, you already imagine it's not the kind of thing you learn in school or depends on mathematical equations or bizarre formulas. Basically, emotional intelligence is the ability a person has to realize, understand, evaluate, and manage their emotions - and also the emotions of others - in a positive way.
Managing emotions is not exactly the easiest task in the world. It takes self-criticism, reflection, meditation, and empathy - just to name a few factors. It all affects the way we behave, make decisions, and interact socially. In this book, let's talk about emotional intelligence and how it influences in all areas of your life.

Summary of Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday | Includes Analysis
Preview:
Ego is the Enemy is Ryan Holiday's attack on the role that ego can play in the lives of most people. Holiday does not use the term "ego" in the traditional Freudian sense but rather as a synonym for excessive self-regard, or egotism. Thanks to the Internet and social media, having an inflated ego is now more encouraged in Western society than ever before. Nevertheless, learning how to cultivate an authentic sense of oneself and one's abilities is vital for living gracefully and achieving one's goals.
Although history is populated by famous and even notorious egomaniacs, the most influential and successful people were more often those who focused on their life's work with humility and dedication. Compare, for example, the outsized ego of Napoleon, whose grandiose imperial ambitions ended in shame and exile, with the character of American general William Tecumseh Sherman. After retiring from the military, he refused to run for president.

Publisher's Summary:
A Mind of Your Own, by holistic women's health psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, aims to help women better understand the root causes of depression and the pervasive myths surrounding antidepressants. Brogan encourages listeners to take their health and wellbeing into their own hands. She outlines a four-week protocol of dietary restrictions, adjustments to sleep and exercise, and meditation. This regimen is intended to provide women with a healthier alternative to antidepressants. By taking an empowered, proactive approach to health, women can overcome debilitating symptoms, become healthier, and ultimately thrive without antidepressants.
Over the course of years as a traditional psychiatrist, Brogan prescribed antidepressants to women because she believed that a chemical imbalance in the brain accounted for mental health disorders. A health crisis of her own forced Brogan to reconsider the conventional wisdom surrounding pharmaceutical treatments for common ailments. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease, shortly after giving birth to her first child....

Title: The Psychology of Flight
Author: Alex Varney
Narrator: Thomas Block
Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 30 mins
Language: English
Release date: 06-21-16
Publisher: Thomas Block Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
Publisher's Summary:
This book has been put back into print after many years of absence because The Psychology of Flight can provide modern pilots - everyone from new students to seasoned professionals - what's needed to continuously make themselves ready for whatever the piloting tasks ahead might be. In essence, it's nothing less than an exquisitely written 'Checklist for the Self'. While it is important to study and understand the rules, the procedures and the particulars of each airplane that a pilot gets into, it is even more important to have a good understanding of the inner workings of the flesh and blood person who will be pushing the levers, pressing the switches, turning the wheels and making the decisions that affect the course of these technological marvels that are airplanes. You.
This is not the sort of book that you should listen only once, not just because there is so much inside, but also because we need refresher training now and again in this most important of all aviation related subjects: basically, a pilot's inner workings. Keep this book to be listened to periodically for recurrent proficiency in the area that is ultimately most important to a pilot: before we can control an airplane with the necessary skills and consistency, we also need to understand how to control ourselves as well as humanly possible.
