| These six women should have signature guitars | 12 févr. 2024 | 00:30:15 | |
With the recent announcement of the limited edition boygenius signature Broadkaster Jr. by Gretsch—which sold out, by the way—another entry has been added to the relatively short list of women, or, in this case, groups of women with signature guitars. It’s a list that has expanded in the past decade or so, and it includes Yvette Young, Chrissie Hynde, Emily Wolf, H.E.R., Susanna Hoffs, Lari Basilio, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, and Courtney Love. And, of course, what is perhaps the most unique signature model named for a woman–the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent. Even though the list of women with signature guitars has grown over the years, I think there’s still a lot of opportunity for brands to honor some of today’s most exciting, up-and-coming guitarists who just happen to be women.
Let’s talk about some women who I think should get a signature guitar. I based this list mostly on vibes. Okay, getting serious, yes, this list is largely artists of whom I’m a personal fan. But I also thought about musicians who are gaining popularity, brands that don’t presently have a lot of signature models, period, guitar models that have been done to death—so I won’t be suggesting Strats of Teles—and, finally, I tried to hit a few different genres. But, me being me, most of these artists fall fairly squarely within quote unquote indie rock genre.

| The rise and fall of Ryan Adams | 10 janv. 2024 | 00:35:03 | |
I’ve said before that one of my biggest musical influences, period, is Ryan Adams. I suppose I should probably say “was” Ryan Adams. From the time I was 12 until probably 2015 or so, I was an enormous supporter of his music. I had all the albums, some of the books, a lot of the 45s, I even went to his art show at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in 2009. I still have a print of one of this paintings hanging on my wall. But when the New York Times published a Me Too article about him in 2019, I just…stopped listening. This week, I dive into the rise and fall of Ryan Adams and how he may have spent his ninth life in 2019. Or, who knows, maybe he has another one on the way.

| EHX has already deleted this PR nightmare of a YouTube video | 21 nov. 2023 | 00:36:01 | |
If you follow legendary pedal company EHX on YouTube, you might have refreshed your feed and even gotten a push notification to check out their new video. It’s titled “The Socialist Gangsters,” so already a pretty weird start. It's an original song by Mike Matthews about the time he busted a union in NYC, and event he clearly blames on the brand's early-'80s hardships. So, what's the story about all that? Is his take true? Was this the worst possible time to come out so strongly anti-union? Let's talk about it. Support Get Offset by...

| Spotify is going to stop paying a lot of artists | 14 nov. 2023 | 00:23:48 | |
Last week, Spotify made the news in a bad way. Long story short, they announced changes to their payout structure that will most certainly demonetize an enormous amount of artists. It’s a move competition law experts are calling “discriminatory and exploitative.” And it’s both a huge deal, and not really a big deal at all. Support Get Offset by...

| Can we stop pretending women care about guitar? | 07 nov. 2023 | 00:34:03 | |
“Can we just stop pretending women care about guitars?” “I get the same vibe from some women pretending to be into Warhammer, that you are larping, that you like pretending to be into guitars, not because of what the guitars actually mean to you, but rather how it means you are perceived in the sub-culture, as the cool guitar gurl, guitars become a means for attention.” Those are two separate comments I got on a video this week. I want to share these not because “Woe is me, people are mean on the internet.” I want to share them because, troll or not, there are people in this world who really think like this. A lot of us want to pretend that the world is better than it used to be—and it probably is—but we still have such a long way to go.

| Live Nation fooled a lot of you last week | 03 oct. 2023 | 00:26:44 | |
What in the world is Live Nation up to? The live event behemoth recently made a colossal announcement—that they are ending the decades-long practice of taking a cut of artist merch sales at their venues, rolling out over the next few months. And though this announcement has been widely cheered and celebrated, it’s not the concession everyone thinks that it is. And yes, lots of bands will still see 10-30% of their merch sales go to Live Nation venues when they perform there.

| 5 Fundamental Riffs (featuring Andy "The Guitar Geek" Ferris) | 07 sept. 2023 | 00:25:37 | |
We all have those "riffs" that are central to who we are as guitarists. Maybe it was one of the first things we learned to play—ever! Or maybe it was what brought us back into the instrument later in life. It could even be something that got your band some serious attention. When Andy Ferris asked me to film an episode where we go over some of my fundamental riffs (with the Walrus Audio Fundamental Series pedals) I couldn't say no. | Is This the Biggest Pedal News of the Year? | 20 déc. 2022 | 00:55:33
This week, Joan and Emily talk about watching H.E.R. on the "live" Beauty and the Beast, holiday drinks and the self-proclaimed "biggest pedal news of the year," which, to be clear, is definitely big news. Still, I always think it's funny when someone calls their own news big news, even more so when it's the "biggest news." | They Know What They're Doing | 22 nov. 2022 | 01:14:25
cw: sa There are blissfully a lot of men in gear communities who are grossed out by the overly sexual comments female guitarists get online. However, even among them is an attitude where the women who dress what's deemed sexually "Know what they're doing" when they wear those outfits and kind of invite those types of comments. It's just not the case. This week, Emily and Joan talk about the idea of respectable vs. "unrespectable" ways women dress and how much of a difference it makes in the especially gross comments they receive. They also discuss the idea that men never use their sexuality to get ahead. Oh well.
