A Difference in Magnitude by Pocket University | Free Audiobook23 Aug 200502:59:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: A Difference in Magnitude Author: Pocket University Narrator: Ralph Cosham Format: Original Recording Length: 2 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 08-23-05 Publisher: Findaway World Genres: History, Military Summary: A Difference in Magnitude uses selected government documents, radio and newsreel broadcasts, and eyewitness accounts to tell the story of the atomic bomb and the nuclear attacks on Japan. Letters, official memos, and diary entries describe the Trinity Test in White Sands, New Mexico; recount President Truman's thoughts before the attacks; tell of the opposition of scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project; and give Japan's response to the devastation. Extensive and well-written reports detail and quantify the destruction and casualties. Included are information on how the atomic bomb works and how it compares to conventional weapons, the reasons for the attacks and how the targets were selected. Original documents and recordings provide an authenticity that only audio can give. An interview with members of the crew who dropped the first bomb conveys the objectivity and remoteness of the execution. Eyewitness reports by a Jesuit priest who saw and felt the blast and then treated the injured and dying. And a girl, a student at a junior college who was less than a half-mile from the explosion, describes the havoc and horror on the ground. Masterfully narrated by Ralph Cosham, this original production is powerful and compelling. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The Future of War by Lawrence Freedman | Free Audiobook10 Oct 201712:57:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Future of War Author: Lawrence Freedman Narrator: Michael Page Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 57 mins Language: English Release date: 10-10-17 Publisher: HighBridge, a Division of Recorded Books Genres: History, Military Summary: In 1912, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, wrote a short story about a war fought from underwater submersibles that included the sinking of passenger ships. At the time, it was dismissed by the British generals and admirals of the day not because the idea of submarines was technically unfeasible, but because no one could imagine that any nation would be so depraved as to sink civilian merchant ships. The future of war more often than not surprises us less because of some fantastic technical or engineering dimension but because of some human, political, or moral threshold that we had never imagined wanting to cross. As Lawrence Freedman shows, the future of war has a past and a present. Ideas of war, strategies for warfare and its practice, and organizing principles of war all have rich and varied origins which have shaped the minds of those who conceive the next war. Freedman shows how war can be studied systematically and empirically to provide a firm foundation for enlightened policy. The Future of War - which covers civil wars to as yet unknown nuclear conflicts, proxy wars (real) to the Cold War (not), fashionably small wars to the War to End All Wars (it didn't) - is filled with insight and fascinating nuggets of military history and culture from one of the most brilliant military and strategic historians of his generation. Sharia Law by Charles River Editors | Free Audiobook18 Jul 201701:41:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Sharia Law Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Jim D. Johnston Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 07-18-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Genres: History, World Summary: With the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and its affiliated "lone wolf" attackers garnering much media coverage, there is a concern that attempts by radical Muslims to attack Westerners is one stage in a longer process to spread Islam and Sharia law. The term Sharia is generally used in a vague manner, particularly by media outlets and political pundits. In essence, Sharia law refers to the body of laws and culture surrounding religious prescriptions in Islam. It encompasses the Qur'an, the Hadith, as well as legal opinions developed since Islam's inception in the 7th century CE. While many Muslims claim that legal opinions on particular topics have been settled and the community as a whole accepts certain actions as right or wrong, one can see this may not always be the case when delving deeper. An interesting fact about Islam is that there is no central governing body of the religion, like the Pope and the Vatican in Roman Catholicism. Instead, there are Muslim religious scholars and leaders around the world who utilize particular standards of practice to enact rulings on the issue of the day. In fact, it is possible to search for databases developed and maintained by Muslim religious leaders containing religious rulings, or fatwas, on a variety of topics that touch the everyday lives of Muslims around the world. So, Sharia law is not a monolithic entity that coherently and ubiquitously controls each aspect of Muslims' lives. Instead, one should view Sharia law as a process by which norms, traditions, and values are negotiated and renegotiated based on the context in which Muslims live. This audiobook explores the basics of Sharia law in Islam and how it is rooted in the important foundations set by the prophet Muhammad during his lifetime, as well as the traditions developed after his passing by the Caliphs. It is important as well to look at the conditions of life in the Arabian Peninsula prior to the founding of Islam so that we may juxtapose and understand the changes that took place when Muhammad was called to prophethood. This book also chronicles the development of Sharia law under the Sunni Ottoman Empire, as well as the Shi'a Safavid Empire, to understand Sharia law's development within both sects of Islam. In most cases, religious leaders like muftis provide fatwas so as to provide guidance to believers based on the original sources (the Qur'an and the Hadith). These various topics are chosen to provide a broad analysis of various issues surrounding Sharia law so that a newcomer may understand law in Islam beyond the headlines and, rather, see into the lives of Muslims affected by these laws and processes.
This audiobook is in Spanish. The Devil Wins by Dallas G. Denery II | Free Audiobook05 Jan 201512:09:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Devil Wins Author: Dallas G. Denery II Narrator: Eric Martin Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 9 mins Language: English Release date: 01-05-15 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: History, World Summary: Is it ever acceptable to lie? This question plays a surprisingly important role in the story of Europe's transition from medieval to modern society. According to many historians, Europe became modern when Europeans began to lie - that is, when they began to argue that it is sometimes acceptable to lie. This popular account offers a clear trajectory of historical progression from a medieval world of faith, in which every lie is sinful, to a more worldly early modern society in which lying becomes a permissible strategy for self-defense and self-advancement. Unfortunately, this story is wrong. For medieval and early modern Christians, the problem of the lie was the problem of human existence itself. To ask "Is it ever acceptable to lie?" was to ask how we, as sinners, should live in a fallen world. As it turns out, the answer to that question depended on who did the asking. The Devil Wins uncovers the complicated history of lying from the early days of the Catholic Church to the Enlightenment, revealing the diversity of attitudes about lying by considering the question from the perspectives of five representative voices - the Devil, God, theologians, courtiers, and women. Examining works by Augustine, Bonaventure, Martin Luther, Madeleine de Scudry, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and a host of others, Dallas G. Denery II shows how the lie, long thought to be the source of worldly corruption, eventually became the very basis of social cohesion and peace.

Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish. Contacto: info@hotaudiobook.com

Mecca and Medina by Jesse Harasta | Free Audiobook24 Jul 201501:38:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Mecca and Medina Author: Jesse Harasta, Charles River Editors Narrator: Doron Alon Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 07-24-15 Publisher: Charles River Editors Genres: History, World Summary: "There is no doubt in the sanctity of Mecca, but a donkey won't become a Hajj pilgrim by just going through the motions." (Rahman Baba) "Whenever the Prophet...returned from a journey and observed the walls of Madinah, he would make his Mount go fast, and if he was on an animal (i.e., a horse), he would make it gallop because of his love for Madinah." (Sahih Bukhari, Book 30: Hadith 110) The reason for the existence of most of the world's cities is obvious to geography students. New York and Shanghai control deep ports and straddle great rivers, bringing trade from the interior; Paris and London are at the crossing points of major cross-country rivers; Johannesburg sits atop a great mountain of gold ore; and Moscow and Madrid are at the hearts of their great nations, easily able to control even the more distant corners of the land. Mecca is quite different, as the city exists solely because it is holy. Even centuries before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, the leaders of Mecca established that their city was the preeminent holy site in Western Arabia and established a truce for pilgrims to the city. In the process one effect of this was that Mecca became a center for what might today be described as tourism, as even ancient visitors needed places for food, water, and sleep. At the same time, they could make offerings in the temples and leave with mementos of their time in Mecca. Many also found it convenient to bring their trade goods to the markets of Mecca, where they could find visitors bringing interesting wares from across the region, and the city also enjoyed the status of a trade center. Of course Mecca is now best known for being Islam's holiest city, revered as the birthplace of Muhammad and the site where Allah first revealed the Qu'ran to him. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
The Holy Grail by Giles Morgan | Free Audiobook10 Feb 201003:11:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Holy Grail Author: Giles Morgan Narrator: Joy Gelardi Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 11 mins Language: English Release date: 02-10-10 Publisher: Matrix Digital Publishing Genres: History, World Summary: The Holy Grail is a subject that fascinates and intrigues. Through its various guises as magic cauldron, cornucopia, horn of plenty and chalice cup it has remained at the centre of popular culture, from antiquity right up to the present day. An object of marvel and mystery, it inhabits a place in mythology that has its roots in historical facts. The Grail has been a major inspiration and catalyst for literature and the arts in Western Culture. From Celtic mythology to the flowering of the medieval romances it has in many ways fulfilled its mythical role as a nurturing and regenerative vessel by providing such a rich and seemingly perpetual source of interest to writers and artists. Charting the emergence of the story of the Grail offers a revealing insight into the cultural shift from Celtic paganism to the emergence and domination of Christianity in Western Europe. The influence of Eastern mysticism emerges in the Grail romances as a result of the medieval crusades with its clash of cultures and subsequent cross-pollination of ideas. The Grail has come to symbolise the ultimate achievement in the modern mind and it became an object of fascination for the psychologist Carl Jung and the poet TS Eliot. Wagner, William Blake and the Pre-Raphaelites are just some of the artists to have fallen under its enduring spell. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
Jesus, Jews & Jerusalem by Ricky King | Free Audiobook08 Jul 201500:35:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Jesus, Jews & Jerusalem Author: Ricky King Narrator: Trevor Clinger Format: Unabridged Length: 35 mins Language: English Release date: 07-08-15 Publisher: RicTamily Publishers Genres: History, World Summary: It was a Roman historian and writer, St. Augustine, who coined the phrase "City of God" in a book of the very same title. But the city of God that Augustine was referring to was not in Jerusalem. When Augustine wrote his book, it was hundreds of years after the Jewish city of Jerusalem had been overrun and destroyed by the Roman legions; he was writing of Rome as the city of God and the center of the Roman Catholic faith. In St. Augustine's day, some 400 years after the Romans had laid waste to Jerusalem, the very empire that had destroyed it was completely transformed by it. Just 400 years after the Romans had crushed Jerusalem their official religion was Christianity, a religion which, of course, has its roots in Jerusalem. So, flash forward 400 years after Rome had laid waste to Jerusalem: it was now Rome that was threatened with ruin from invading Visigoth armies. It was the destruction of Rome, not Jerusalem, that inspired Augustine's City of God. The Romans had been completely demoralized by the sacking of their city, and many had started to blame their Christian faith itself for the city's downfall. They started to believe that Rome was being punished for abandoning their traditional pagan Gods for Christianity. St. Augustine wrote City of God as a response to this widespread fear and disillusionment with the faith. In a great attempt to console the souls of the demoralized citizens of Rome, Augustine was the first theologian to argue that there was, in fact, no physical city of God. In his way of thinking, neither Rome nor Jerusalem were cities of God. Augustine stated that the true city of God did not have a zip code or earthly address, but rather resided in heaven itself. And, no matter what happened to Rome, Christians should not be worried, because the true city of God, the "New Jerusalem", was still alive and well and could never be sacked by Visigoths or anyone else. Medina: The History of Islam's Second Holiest City by Jesse Harasta | Free Audiobook15 Jul 201501:04:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Medina: The History of Islam's Second Holiest City Author: Jesse Harasta, Charles River Editors Narrator: Doron Alon Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 07-15-15 Publisher: Charles River Editors Genres: History, World Summary: "Whenever the Prophet...returned from a journey and observed the walls of Madinah, he would make his Mount go fast, and if he was on an animal (i.e., a horse), he would make it gallop because of his love for Madinah." (Sahih Bukhari, Book 30: Hadith 110) The reason for the existence of most of the world's cities is obvious to geography students. New York and Shanghai control deep ports and straddle great rivers, bringing trade from the interior; Paris and London are at the crossing points of major cross-country rivers; Johannesburg sits atop a great mountain of gold ore; and Moscow and Madrid are at the heart of their great nations, easily able to control even the more distant corners of the land. Medina, however, is starkly different. Even centuries before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, Jews settled on the land to escape persecution at the hands of the Babylonians and Romans, meaning the area and its arid environment brought inhabitants precisely because it wasn't an attractive or resource rich area. In fact, the city fated to become the second holiest city in Islam earned that spot simply by straddling trade routes to the religious city of Mecca, which brought traders and pilgrims in large enough numbers to make it a trade center. Of course, Mecca is now best-known for being Islam's holiest city, and it is revered as the birthplace of Muhammad and the site where Allah first revealed the Qu'ran to him. However, the prophet spent a great deal of time in Medina, especially when he and his supporters found themselves in conflict with the Meccans. Using Medina as a base, Muhammad eventually took Mecca, and both cities became integral parts of the Caliphate that followed. This meant that even as history brought geopolitical changes, Medina remained a city of religious significance for all Muslims, and even though its turbulent history is often overlooked, many people are still quite familiar with the city. Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish. Contacto: info@hotaudiobook.com

Genres: History, World Summary: Borobudur in Central Java has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. It is the world's largest Buddhist temple, built out of 1.6 million blocks of worked volcanic stone and containing three miles of relief carvings and 504 statues of Buddha. Yet for 1,000 years it lay deserted in the jungle until it was rediscovered by none other than the famous Englishman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. In 1811, at the age of 30, Raffles became Java's Lieutenant-Governor. When reports reached him of a huge structure deep in the jungle he went to investigate. Unlike other explorers of the age his first reaction was not to hack the temple to bits. He had it surveyed, sketched and described in exact detail. This book - like Raffles - seeks to solve the mysteries of Borobudur. Who built the temple? How was it constructed? What was it for? And why was it abandoned so soon after completion? The Bible makes one of the earliest references to "mortification of the flesh", as seen in Colossians 3:5, which reads, "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry." As time progressed, this concept has branched out into a more extreme form - corporal mortification. These are cases of voluntary acts of agonizing self-inflicted deprivation and physical torture, acts that have aroused much contempt from the public. Thanks to Dan Brown's best-selling novel turned blockbuster mega-hit, The Da Vinci Code, in which audiences were introduced to Silas, the villainous, self-whipping monk, corporal mortification is now a term most often associated with Opus Dei. A creepy, deranged, and blood-thirsty albino monk, Silas is most remembered for viciously whipping himself with a nail-embedded cilice. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Irish provides ample evidence from history, society, politics, religion, and sociology to show that saying that Jesus Christ is a Jew hurts Jews and Jewish communities. In the darkest days of the Vietnam War, Americas Central Intelligence Agency secretly initiated a sweeping program of kidnap, torture, and assassination devised to destabilize the infrastructure of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam, commonly known as the Viet Cong. The victims of the Phoenix Program were Vietnamese civilians, male and female, suspected of harboring information about the enemy - though many on the blacklist were targeted by corrupt South Vietnamese security personnel looking to extort money or remove a rival. Between 1965 and 1972, more than eighty thousand noncombatants were neutralized, as men and women alike were subjected to extended imprisonment without trial, horrific torture, brutal rape, and in many cases execution, all under the watchful eyes of US government agencies.Based on extensive research and in-depth interviews with former participants and observers, Douglas Valentines startling expos blows the lid off of what was possibly the bloodiest and most inhumane covert operation in the CIAs history. The ebook edition includes The Phoenix Has Landed, a new introduction that addresses the Phoenix-style network that constitutes Americas internal security apparatus today. Residents on American soil are routinely targeted under the guise of protecting us from terrorism - which is why, more than ever, people need to understand what Phoenix is all about.

Through a flower pot, Colombia achieved its independence. History tells us that it all began with a flower pot. It was Friday, July 20th, a marketing day, when a Criollo went to ask to borrow a flower pot. This act, seemingly ephemeral, started a clash between Criollos and the Spanish and culminated in the independence of Colombia. Nevertheless, nowadays it is clear that what happened that day was not a spontaneous act. In fact, it was the consequence of several combined circumstances. Note: This is audiobook is in Spanish. Political Order and Political Decay by Francis Fukuyama | Free Audiobook30 Sep 201424:05:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Political Order and Political Decay Author: Francis Fukuyama Narrator: Jonathan Davis Format: Unabridged Length: 24 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 09-30-14 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: History, World Summary: The second volume of the best-selling landmark work on the history of the modern state. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, David Gress called Francis Fukuyama's Origins of Political Order "magisterial in its learning and admirably immodest in its ambition." In the New York Times Book Review, Michael Lind described the book as "a major achievement by one of the leading public intellectuals of our time." And in the Washington Post, Gerard DeGrott exclaimed "this is a book that will be remembered. Bring on volume two." Volume two is finally here, completing the most important work of political thought in at least a generation. Taking up the essential question of how societies develop strong, impersonal, and accountable political institutions, Fukuyama follows the story from the French Revolution to the so-called Arab Spring and the deep dysfunctions of contemporary American politics. He examines the effects of corruption on governance, and why some societies have been successful at rooting it out. He explores the different legacies of colonialism in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and offers a clear-eyed account of why some regions have thrived and developed more quickly than others. And he boldly reckons with the future of democracy in the face of a rising global middle class and entrenched political paralysis in the West. A sweeping, masterful account of the struggle to create a well-functioning modern state, Political Order and Political Decay is destined to be a classic. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six species of human inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo Sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism? And what will our world be like in the millennia to come? In Sapiens, Dr. Yuval Noah Harari spans the whole of human history, from the very first humans to walk the earth to the radical - and sometimes devastating - breakthroughs of the cognitive, agricultural, and scientific revolutions. Drawing on insights from biology, anthropology, paleontology, and economics, he explores how the currents of history have shaped our human societies, the animals and plants around us, and even our personalities. Have we become happier as history has unfolded? Can we ever free our behavior from the heritage of our ancestors? And what, if anything, can we do to influence the course of the centuries to come? Bold, wide-ranging and provocative, Sapiens challenges everything we thought we knew about being human: our thoughts, our actions, our power...and our future. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

An Economic History of the World since 1400 by The Great Courses | Free Audiobook19 Aug 201624:29:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: An Economic History of the World since 1400 Author: The Great Courses Narrator: Professor Donald J. Harreld Ph.D. Format: Original Recording Length: 24 hrs and 29 mins Language: English Release date: 08-19-16 Publisher: The Great Courses Genres: History, World Summary: Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history, from the medieval world to the 21st century. Aimed at the layperson with only a cursory understanding of the field, An Economic History of the World since 1400 reveals how economics has influenced (and been influenced by) historical events and trends, including the Black Death, the Age of Exploration, the Industrial Revolution, the European colonization of Africa, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the birth of personal computing. Professor Harreld has crafted a riveting, centuries-long story of power, glory, and ideology that reveals how, in step with history, economic ideas emerged, evolved, and thrived or died. Along the way, you'll strengthen your understanding of a range of economic concepts, philosophies, trends, treaties, and organizations, including the mercantile system, Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, Marxist economics, African independence movements, and the formation of economic organizations including the European Union. You'll also consider provocative questions about the intersection of history and economics. What did the economies of Roosevelt's America and Hitler's Germany have in common? What does history tell us about how nations should dictate economic policy? Can we say that free trade is truly free? Marvel at just how much we still have to learn about the economic forces that have dictated our past - and that will dictate our future. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

The definitive account of what happened, why, and, above all, how it felt when catastrophe hit Japan - by the Japan correspondent of The Times (London) and author of People Who Eat Darkness. On March 11, 2011, a powerful earthquake sent a 120-foot-high tsunami smashing into the coast of Northeast Japan. By the time the sea retreated, more than 18,000 people had been crushed, burned to death, or drowned. It was Japan's greatest single loss of life since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. It set off a national crisis and the meltdown of a nuclear power plant. And even after the immediate emergency had abated, the trauma of the disaster continued to express itself in bizarre and mysterious ways. Richard Lloyd Parry, an award-winning foreign correspondent, lived through the earthquake in Tokyo and spent six years reporting from the disaster zone. There he encountered stories of ghosts and hauntings and met a priest who exorcised the spirits of the dead. And he found himself drawn back again and again to a village that had suffered the greatest loss of all, a community tormented by unbearable mysteries of its own. What really happened to the local children as they waited in the schoolyard in the moments before the tsunami? Why did their teachers not evacuate them to safety? And why was the unbearable truth being so stubbornly covered up? Ghosts of the Tsunami is a soon-to-be classic intimate account of an epic tragedy, told through the accounts of those who lived through it. It tells the story of how a nation faced a catastrophe and the struggle to find consolation in the ruins. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

On China by Henry Kissinger | Free Audiobook17 May 201120:12:00

In On China, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to the country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. Drawing on historical records as well as on his conversations with Chinese leaders over the past 40 years, Kissinger examines how China has approached diplomacy, strategy, and negotiation throughout its history and reflects on the consequences for the 21st-century world. As Kissinger underscores, the unique conditions under which China developed continue to shape its policies and attitudes toward the outside world. For centuries, China rarely encountered other societies of comparable size and sophistication. China was the "Middle Kingdom", treating the peoples on its periphery as vassal states. At the same time, Chinese statesmen - facing threats of invasion from without and the contests of competing factions within - developed a canon of strategic thought that prized the virtues of subtlety, patience, and indirection over feats of martial prowess. On China examines key episodes in Chinese foreign policy, from the earliest days through the 20th century, with a particular emphasis on the modern era. Kissinger illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such events as the initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, the opening of relations with the United States, the Tiananmen Square crackdown, and China's accession to the World Trade Organization. With a final chapter on China's 21st-century world role, On China provides a sweeping historical perspective on Chinese foreign policy from one of the premier statesmen of the 20th century. Yuval Noah Harari, author of the best-selling Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, envisions a not-too-distant world in which we face a new set of challenges. In Homo Deus, he examines our future with his trademark blend of science, history, philosophy, and every discipline in between. The World until Yesterday by Jared Diamond | Free Audiobook31 Dec 201218:31:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The World until Yesterday Author: Jared Diamond Narrator: Jay Snyder Format: Unabridged Length: 18 hrs and 31 mins Language: English Release date: 12-31-12 Publisher: Penguin Audio Genres: History, World Summary: Most of us take for granted the features of our modern society, from air travel and telecommunications to literacy and obesity. Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence. Societies like those of the New Guinea Highlanders remind us that it was only yesterday - in evolutionary time - when everything changed and that we moderns still possess bodies and social practices often better adapted to traditional than to modern conditions. The World until Yesterday provides a mesmerizing firsthand picture of the human past as it had been for millions of years - a past that has mostly vanished - and considers what the differences between that past and our present mean for our lives today. This is Jared Diamonds most personal book to date, as he draws extensively from his decades of field work in the Pacific islands, as well as evidence from Inuit, Amazonian Indians, Kalahari San people, and others. Diamond doesnt romanticize traditional societies - after all, we are shocked by some of their practices - but he finds that their solutions to universal human problems such as child rearing, elder care, dispute resolution, risk, and physical fitness have much to teach us. A characteristically provocative, enlightening, and entertaining book, The World until Yesterday will be essential and delightful listening. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
Asia's Reckoning by Richard Mcgregor | Free Audiobook05 Sep 201716:14:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Asia's Reckoning Author: Richard Mcgregor Narrator: Steve West Format: Unabridged Length: 16 hrs and 14 mins Language: English Release date: 09-05-17 Publisher: Penguin Audio Genres: History, World Summary: A history of the combative military, diplomatic, and economic relations among China, Japan, and the United States since the 1970s - and the potential crisis that awaits them. Richard McGregor's Asia's Reckoning is a compelling account of the widening geopolitical cracks in a region that has flourished under an American security umbrella for more than half a century. The toxic rivalry between China and Japan, two Asian giants consumed with endless history wars and ruled by entrenched political dynasties, is threatening to upend the peace underwritten by Pax Americana since World War II. Combined with Donald Trump's disdain for America's old alliances and China's own regional ambitions, East Asia is entering a new era of instability and conflict. If the United States laid the postwar foundations for modern Asia, now the anchor of the global economy, Asia's Reckoning reveals how that structure is falling apart. With unrivaled access to archives in the United States and Asia, as well as to many of the major players in all three countries, Richard McGregor has written a tale that blends the tectonic shifts in diplomacy with bitter domestic politics and the personalities driving them. It is a story not only of an overstretched America but also of the rise and fall and rise of the great powers of Asia. The about-turn of Japan - from a colossus seemingly poised for world domination to a nation in inexorable decline in the space of two decades - has few parallels in modern history, as does the rapid rise of China - a country whose military is now larger than those of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia's combined. The confrontational course on which China and Japan are set is no simple spat between neighbors: the United States would be involved on the side of Japan in any military conflict between the two countries. The fallout would be an economic tsunami, affecting manufacturing centers, trade routes, and political capitals on every continent. Richard McGregor's book takes us behind the headlines of his years reporting as the Financial Times' Beijing and Washington bureau chief to show how American power will stand or fall on its ability to hold its ground in Asia. The Kingdom of Speech by Tom Wolfe | Free Audiobook30 Aug 201604:38:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: The Kingdom of Speech Author: Tom Wolfe Narrator: Robert Petkoff Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 08-30-16 Publisher: Hachette Audio Genres: History, World Summary: The maestro storyteller and reporter provocatively argues that what we think we know about speech and human evolution is wrong. Tom Wolfe, whose legend began in journalism, takes us on an eye-opening journey that is sure to arouse widespread debate. The Kingdom of Speech is a captivating, paradigm-shifting argument that speech - not evolution - is responsible for humanity's complex societies and achievements. From Alfred Russel Wallace, the Englishman who beat Darwin to the theory of natural selection but later renounced it, through the controversial work of modern-day anthropologist Daniel Everett, who defies the current wisdom that language is hardwired in humans, Wolfe examines the solemn, long-faced, laugh-out-loud zigzags of Darwinism, old and neo, and finds it irrelevant here in the Kingdom of Speech. Genres: History, Military Summary: In this major and wholly original contribution to military history, John Keegan reverses the usual convention of writing about war in terms of generals and nations in conflict, which tends to leave the common soldier as cipher. Instead, he focuses on what a set battle is like for the man in the thick of ithis fears, his wounds and their treatment, the mechanics of being taken prisoner, the nature of leadership at the most junior level, the role of compulsion in getting men to stand their ground, the intrusions of cruelty and compassion, the din and blood. Set battles, with their unities of time and place, may be a thing of the past, but this anatomy of what they were like for the men who fought them is an unforgettable mirror held up to human nature.
