The story most of us learned says cats came to Japan from Tang China to guard Buddhist scriptures around the Nara and Heian periods. But a single domestic-cat bone from the Karakami site on Iki Island, dated to the late Yayoi period, places cats on the archipelago about 2,000 years ago, more than five hundred years before Buddhism arrived.

From there we trace the likely route, from coastal China through the Korean Peninsula to northern Kyushu, the same path that brought rice farming, with ancient-DNA work (Ottoni et al., 2017) showing the Egyptian-origin cat had already reached China. We follow the cat's rise from working mouser to a courtier with an actual rank in The Pillow Book, and unpack the Japanese Bobtail's short tail and its T-box genes, HES7 and TbxT.
