Generation Mix – Details, episodes & analysis

Wow - it's been a long time coming.  6 months in fact since U2 graced your ears.  We recorded this in November but only got round to recording the end musical clue yesterday as we'd been arguing about whether it's a normal episode or turnaround...

Anyway, this episode dives into the three chords wonders themselves - Status Quo. One of the biggest and best bands of the 70s.  At least until they went south in the latter end of the decade and never really recovered credibility.

We're back!  It's been a long old wait - but for the best of reasons.  Joel has been taking his GCSEs.  That's all over now and what better way to celebrate than to listen to a somewhat polarising band - U2.

Together as a band for over 45 years with no line changes or departures ever - U2 can lay claim to the Pride of being the most stable band in rock history.

This is a trawl through their career up to the controversial Songs Of Innocence and that particular i-Tunes shaped can of worms does get talked about but do we get stuck in a moment we can't get out of?

Joel has his revenge and there is a shock involved!

What's this?  A new Generation Mix episode just 2 weeks after the last one?  We really are spoiling you.

In this episode it's New York singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega under the spotlight.  Tracks drawn from her entire 30+ year career from Marlene On The Wall through to Harper Lee.

It's a great trawl through some excellent songcraft.

A new episode of our podcast with a shorter interval than of late (just 6 weeks or so) and it's a solo Beatle episode with our focus on the Quiet Beatle - George Harrison.

George's solo career really kicked off with All Things Must Pass and after a few lengthy hiatuses ended with the posthumous Brainwashed.  We have picks from across his entire 30 year solo career, taking in possibly the greatest ever supergroup,  and even a sneaky little Beatles inclusion of a song that was unreleased until his solo self titled record - I just prefer the Beatle version.

Joel, of course gets his revenge.

Wow.  Another unfeasibly long gap between episodes.  Sorry about that.  On the other hand - this is our longest episode yet as our conversation is increasingly that - a conversation rather than Neil banging on too much.  Joel has some slightly deeper insights and Neil really goes off on a diatribe about modern music and his perception of the lazy writing.

Meanwhile, the music of Paul Simon is our focus - both solo and with Art Garfunkel.

Okay - firstly it's been a while as Joel has been super busy with all the usual end of term activities filling up his calendar.  So, apologies for the delay.

Also, this is an episode that might be of limited interest as it's on someone who, frankly, many of you may not be aware - the worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen.  

He's been a huge influence on Neil over the last 30 years.

It's our first repeated artist and it can only be the greatest band that ever there was - The Beatles.  

Neil had always intended a Vol II for this artist right back at the very start of the "Daddy's Introduction To..." series and so a few wonderful gems were purposefully held back for this volume.

Joel's revenge is not commensurate with how much he actually enjoyed the CD which I don't think is really that fair!

Episode 30 take a trip on the Road to Hell to the music of Middlesboro's finest son - Chris Rea.

It's safe to say that Joel's enthusiasm levels for this one are low, at least until the last few tracks.

His revenge is...OK.  I wonder if anyone else hears the same similarities in the singer's voice to that of Gerard Way.  Let us know over on the Generation Mix and Pockenrop Facebook page.
