This week's pod is a roundup episode featuring Blade Chimera, Midtris, and Death Stranding 2. In the roundup: Tron Catalyst, Tiny Garden, Preserve, Wheel World.

It’s a simple comfort-food video game with plenty of heart and some colourful, fantastical visuals.

160: The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom20 May 202300:58:36

Tears Of The Kingdom is Nintendo’s impossible sequel. How do you follow up the best game of all time? Their answer was to expand it in all directions. Tears of the Kingdom uses the miraculous Breath of the Wild as its foundations, soaring high and plunging deep to create an astounding adventure in which the possibilities stretch as far as the horizon.

Note: this show covers the intro, opening sky island area, and landfall sections of the game. I tried to be sensitive about spoilers, and note in advance if I'm touching on anything I feel it might be nice for players to discover for themselves. There are no story spoilers However, this is based on my own interpretation of what could be considered spoiler material, so listener discretion is advised. I'd say this show is probably most suited to players who have played for 10-15 hours, generally speaking.

158: Jedi: Fallen Order, Strayed Lights, The Last Case Of Benedict Fox, May Games Preview04 May 202300:51:13

Jedi: Fallen Order is a game I first talked about on episode ten of this podcast, way back in 2020. I finally rolled credits this week, so with that, Jedi: Survivor's release, and it being May 4th, it seemed like a good time to talk about it again. It's a nostalgic Star Wars action-adventure game that nails the elusive vibe that made the first trilogy great. There are some significant bumps in the road, but it’s an accomplished game that really does make you feel the force as a Padawan runaway relearning your Jedi skills.

In the roundup: The Last Case of Benedict Fox, Strayed Lights, and a May video game releases preview, including Venba, Dordogne, After Us, Planet of Lana, Tin Hearts, Ravenlok, Miasma Chronicles, Humanity, Cassette Beats, and — of course — The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

157: Betrayal At Club Low29 Apr 202300:41:18

Betrayal At Club Low is an oddball point ’n’ click adventure game that melds weird storytelling, retro visuals, a loopy nightclub infiltration scenario, and compelling dice-based skill checks into a contemporary refresh for the genre. It's super fun, and feels like an instant cult classic.

In the roundup: Jedi: Fallen Order, Storyteller, Minabo: A Walk Through Life, The Last Case of Benedict Fox.

TRON Identity is an atmospheric detective story set in an intiguing building called The Repository, over the course of a single rainy night. The presentation nails TRON’s singular aesthetic, but the story is over before it has really begun.

In the roundup: Horizon: Burning West, and Nintendo's April Indie World showcase, including Animal Well, Paper Trail, Oxenfree II, Cult of the Lamb, Brotato, Shadows Over Loathing, and more.

155: Terra Nil15 Apr 202300:46:48

Terra Nil is a relaxing, and at times taxing, terraforming game about repairing the ecosystem of a decimated world, then cleaning up after yourself and leaving it to flourish. It's a profound, philosophically important, and surprisingly emotional experience.

154: Tchia31 Mar 202300:39:34

Tchia is a charming, sun-drenched open-world adventure in which a child protagonist sails, runs, floats, and flies through a beautiful mountainous archipelago. The engrossing world casts a spell that’s occasionally broken by unexpected bouts of combat, but it’s recommended nonetheless.

In the roundup: Terra Nil.

Your host is off galavanting at the London Games Festival this week, so this episode a little inbetweener. It's a look back at the Nintendo Switch — which was *the* place to play indie games on console, for a while — and the great indies it'll be remembered for.

In the roundup: Lushfoil Photography Sim, Promise Mascot Agency, Koira.

152: Panzer Dragoon Remake18 Mar 202300:34:42

Panzer Dragoon will be well known to ‘90s console gamers. It’s a cult classic dragon-riding rails shooter that first arrived on the Sega Saturn in 1996, and got an unexpected remake for Switch and other modern consoles in 2020. In this episode, we take a rare dive into gaming nostalgia to see how it holds up, and touch on its sequels, Zwei, Orta and the legendary Panzer Dragoon Saga.

In the roundup: Pronty, Hi-Fi Rush, DREDGE, & More.

151: Wild Hearts11 Mar 202300:54:37

Wild Hearts is an idiosyncratic monster hunting RPG set in a fantasy-samurai world where humanity is beset by wild, aggressive megafauna. You track down these huge, spectacular "kemono" through fun open-world areas, engaging in multi-phase battles using dynamic, mid-battle building. The game's performance is supremely janky, but the addictive combat makes for a thrilling ride.

Birth is short, heartfelt point ’n’ click game in which we navigate a strange line-drawn city, interacting with the bony creatures and odd situations we find there. The puzzles involve playful physics, hidden objects, and pattern-matching mechanics that raise a smile, and evoke the sadness, seriousness and silliness of our fleeting lives. 147: Melatonin11 Feb 202300:43:39
This was a news-packed week, so first we whip through the big reveals of the Nintendo Direct, and flick through the demo pile at Steam Next Fest, including some new indie games to get excited about. Then, our featured review – a short and sweet rhythm game called Melatonin, that combines pastel colours, soft line art, and lo-fi beats into a dreamy vapourwave experience. You tap and combo your way through the mundane dreams of a sleep-deprived protagonist, and you’re left feeling relaxed, focussed, and optimistic. It slipped out in December, and went a little under the radar – but don't sleep on it! 250: Kentucky Route Zero - Act IV31 Mar 202501:05:30

Act IV of KRZ takes the form of an epic river journey that feels like the centrepiece of the game. It's a voyage down the Echo River aboard the Mucky Mammoth, with the player no longer behind the wheel. We drift between the various members of our ragtag group, deepening our understanding of Ezra, Will, Junebug & Johnny, Shannon, and the ailing Conway, who seems to be losing his grip on the world.

As per this play along series, the pod is sprinkled with comments from patrons, pals, and listeners: thanks to Dovetail, Lenka, Zanem, Ray, Skogstokig, and Dave for chipping in. Y'all outdid yourselves in the act.

You can join this playthrough (and future ones like it) at http://patreon.com/gaminginthewild. You also get 15 patron bonus episodes, an invite to the Discord community, and the warm feeling of knowing you're supporting me in making this podcast.

I'm away from my home studio for a couple of weeks starting tomorrow, but there's some Gaming In The Wild scheduled for YouTube later this week: http://youtube.com/gaminginthewild.

And I'll be posting on social media from the road: http://gaminginthewild.com.

Thanks for listening, back soon!

138: FAR: Changing Tides, Patron GOTY Vote 202216 Dec 202200:50:22
FAR: Changing Tides is a welcome sequel to a minor indie classic in which the player pilots a huge, hulking vehicle through a ravaged post-climate-change world. The sense of scale and motion can feel nothing short of miraculous, but the puzzles don’t always make for plain sailing. In the roundup: High On Life, I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, and Sword Ship. We also kick of GOTY season by revealing the results of the Patreon GOTY vote, as voted on by the show's patrons! 136: God of War Ragnarök, Citizen Sleeper Flux & Refuge03 Dec 202201:09:18
God of War Ragnarok is the extravagantly produced continuation of GoW 2018’s melancholy, cinematic and spectacular father-son story. It trades 2018’s intimate cast, tight focus and emotional heft for a somwhat loose and meandering MCU-influenced romp through Norse mythology. Also this episode: Citizen Sleeper’s Flux and Refuge DLC, a preview of slick seafaring action-adventure Wavetale, and a look ahead to what’s coming out this month, including Togges, Swordship, Choo Choo Charles, Blacktail, and Melatonin. And a big thank you to shows latest Patron, bsushi! If you'd like to join them in supporting the show on Patreon, you can do so from $1 per month at http://patreon.com/gaminginthewild. 135: Vampire Survivors26 Nov 202200:51:04
Vampire Survivors is a strikingly simple and startlingly addictive arcade-style game that coined a whole new genre overnight. It's a casual shoot 'em up that sees you carving your way through an ocean of pixel enemies that overwhelm the screen in a mesmerising cacophony of destruction. In the roundup: Norco, The Witcher 3, Togges, Pentiment, God of War: Ragnarök. The NME interview I mention with Vampire Survivor's creator, Luca Galante, can be found here: https://www.nme.com/features/gaming-features/vampire-survivors-creator-luca-galante-talks-quitting-his-job-to-fulfil-his-promise-3153107. 133: God of War (2018)12 Nov 202201:20:08
As God of War Ragnarök releases, it's time for a deep dive into the 2018 series reboot. It's a father-son story set in a mythic Viking world of truly epic scope and scale, mixing singularly spectacular battles with exploration, dungeons, and RPG progression. The somewhat scripted gameplay drags at times, but overall, it's a god-tier game from SIE. In the roundup: Ghost Song, The Entropy Centre, Somerville, Owlboy, The Ascent. This show is Patreon supported. You can become a member from $1 per month at http://patreon.com/gaminginthewild amd get access to a catalogue of bonus episodes, and an invite to our lovely Discord community, or send a tip via Ko-Fi at http://ko-fi.com/gaminginthewild. 132: Rollerdrome05 Nov 202200:47:08
Rollerdrome is a stylish death-on-skates survival-sport shooter that shines through its slick movement and satisfying gunplay, but is let down by didactic progression and bruising difficulty. Also in this episode: a look at some November releases, including Ghost Song, Floodland, Pentiment, Somerville, and the latest Playstation blockbuster – God of War: Ragnarok. In the roundup: Darkest Dungeon on Nintendo Switch, Monster Train on iOS, and ReCore: Definitive Edition on Xbox Game Pass. 131: Roadwarden, Scorn, Echo, and more29 Oct 202201:05:21

Roadwarden is a quite brilliant indie game about a 40-day journey in which you and your humble steed explore the wild northern peninsula of a high-fantasy realm. With meaningful choices, branching paths, plural solutions, and leeway to roleplay as you wish, it's addictive, absorbing, and inspired.

In the spooky-game roundup: Scorn, Little Nightmares, ECHO, and Dead Space.

130: Paradise Marsh, Metroidvania Roundup22 Oct 202200:44:08
Paradise Marsh is a pleasant, thoughtful, swampy indie game with a glorious pixel-polygon art style and a glowing soundtrack by Disasterpeace. Catch frogs, chase bugs, eat mushrooms, and commune with the night sky in this lovely psychedelic mini-adventure. In the roundup: 8 Doors, Blasphemous, Sundered, Scorn, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Inscryption. And a big thank you to shows latest Patron, bsushi! 129: Haiku, the Robot15 Oct 202200:49:00

Haiku, the Robot is an indie game in the truest sense of the term—a solo developer project that was successfully Kickstarted all the way to a Steam and Switch release. It’s a delightful, atmospheric exploration adventure that wears its Hollow Knight and Metroid influences on sleeve—and deserves to carry that torch.

In the roundup: Paradise Marsh, Lego: Bricktales, I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, Scourgebringer, Rollerdrome, and more.

127: Immortality01 Oct 202201:24:55
Immortality is an ambitious new interactive film game from Sam Barlow, in which the player turns detective to untangle the mystery of a missing young actress called Marissa Marcel. With an ingenious “match cut” mechanic and some very extra twists (hidden behind a spoiler break!) this is an absolutely unforgettable game. In the roundup: Moonscars, Dorfromantik, Foretales. Big thanks to The Short Game podcast for their two excellent episodes on Immortality—they helped me to form my thoughts on this game’s elusive story: Spoiler free: https://www.theshortgame.net/333-immortality-part-1-no-spoilers/ Spoilerful: https://www.theshortgame.net/334-immortality-part-2-spoilers-analysis/ If you'd like to support the show on Patreon, you can do so from $1 per month and get exclusive episodes, sale recommendations, and an invite to the show’s Discord community at http://patreon.com/gaminginthewild. 126: Deathloop25 Sep 202201:02:16

Deathloop is Arkane’s latest, and some say greatest game. Initially a Playstation console exclusive and 2021 GOTY contender, it’s now getting a second wave of attention as it arrives on Xbox Game Pass and PS+. I talk through the highs and lows in this episode, from the excellent audio-visual presentation, voice acting, movement, and level design—to its tangled, misfiring story and frustratingly didactic structure.

In the roundup: Blossom Tales 2: The Minotaur King, Metal: Hellsinger, Fuga: Melodies of Steel, Dorfromantik.

123: Ooblets03 Sep 202200:53:27

This episode was a strange one to make... how do you talk about a game that you're broadly enjoying, and playing daily – whilst also thinking every aspect of it is in some way strange, off, lacking, or flawed? That's the "gamefeel"-related terrain I attempt to navigate in this episode, all about the newest cutesy village-builder on the block: Ooblets.

In the roundup: Slime Rancher, Assassin's Creed Valhalla. In the outro: Rogue Legacy 2, Tinykin, Immortality, Cult of the Lamb v1.01.
