EP:260 | Bonus: Seed Coating Explained30 Aug 202400:51:46

On this bonus podcast it’s an education on how science and technology is helping to enhance seedling survival on super small seeds like clovers, alfalfas and select brassicas. We are joined by Bill Talley of Summit Coatings a long time seedsman who does a great job of explaining the thought process behind coating seed and adding inoculants.  This is a technology that’s made many people wonder what’s going on as the overall seed count is lower, the seed is made heavier, but in the end you’ll have more plants survive. If your into food plots and especially clover, you need to listen and it will help your wildlife farming skills. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

EP:259 | Talking Ungulates with Dave Owens27 Aug 202401:12:16

This week we have one of our favorite guests talk deer hunting with us. Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project is a rabid turkey hunter, and each fall he manages to wrap a tag around an old bruiser whitetail. Is he equally obsessed? What deer sign does he key in on? What are his favorite setups? Is it feed such as acorns or persimmons? Trails? Near bedding?  We ask the question, what does he think makes him such a successful hunter? He’s a humble guy but we pull out some qualities that we all can apply to our own hunts. It’s a good discussion – one that a deer hunter will certainly enjoy. Does he get revenge with a trivia question? Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

EP:250 | Growing Corn for Wildlife26 Jul 202401:36:25

In this BONUS episode Dr. Erick Larson, the Miss State University Extension Corn and Grain Crops Specialist joins us to explain growing corn for wildlife. Everyone readily admits a field of standing corn can attract and hold wildlife and teamed up with cool season plantings can create beautiful areas of green/grain. However for many food plotters, growing corn can be a bit intimidating. We ask Erick to help us understand how to take agricultural knowledge and apply it to growing smaller plots of corn specifically for wildlife.  Erick’s a mild mannered corn genius who recently bow killed a 200-inch whitetail in Kansas.  It’s a great discussion. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

EP:156 | Soybeans : A Game Changer for Your Deer09 May 202301:21:33

This week we welcome Heath North and Jason Pieroni, from Stratton Seed Company, to the podcast to help us understand the magical soybean. There may not be a more nutritious and highly desired food source for whitetails that can provide almost 4 seasons of the year. Soybeans are close to being the magic silver bullet of deer forages, but not all soybeans are equal and Heath explains the differences. When to plant, how deep, how big of an area to plant, broadcast or drill, glyphosate tolerance and when to spray, understanding the growth processes, inoculation, and more! It’s a fascinating discussion and all Gamekeepers can learn something. Helping your deer herd is important and it can start right now by planting a suitable soybean variety. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

EP:153 | The Story of Avery Island, Tabasco and Wildlife Conservation.28 Apr 202301:35:29

This week Dr. Shane Bernard tells us the history of Avery Island in Louisiana, including fascinating stories about the conservation efforts of E. A. “Ned” McIlhenny (1872-1949), the son of TABASCO® Sauce inventor E. McIlhenny. As the story goes, this man single handedly saved the imperiled Snowy Egret by creating protected sanctuary on the island that by 1911, had a thriving population over 100,000 birds.  E. A. also banded over 300,000 birds and waterfowl to learn their migration habits, along with authoring a book with Charles Jordan about wild turkeys. The 2200 acre island also is home to a subspecies of whitetail deer thought to only live on the island. Shane, an accomplished author himself, is the historian and curator for the McIlhenny family and the TABASCO brand, who shares some great stories with us. You’ll be surprised. Listen, Learn, Enjoy!

EP:249 | They Did What? Duck Hunting Confrontations23 Jul 202401:06:40

This week we are joined by Natalie Krebs, Executive Editor at Outdoor Life. She recently traveled to Australia to learn about the anti-hunting movement that’s vigorously trying to stop duck hunting. We were fascinated to hear about how these groups operated. We’ve never encountered an anti-hunter during a hunt…have you? Her stories are shocking and we thought that every hunter should pay attention to this to understand and help prevent this from happening in our United States. Either through egregious actions during hunts or more discreet methods of changing laws (think California mountain lions and now attempting the same in Colorado), the anti’s are making efforts to shut down our way of life. They don’t understand conservation and how hunting plays an integral role in managing wildlife, while at the same time raising funds for the same animals and many others.  This is one every hunter needs to pay attention to and share. Listen, Learn and Be Informed.

You’ll hear a priceless Mr. Fox story from a rainy morning hunt, plus legendary turkey hunter/caller Ernie Callendrelli joins us and has us all laughing hysterically.  We don’t take ourselves too seriously and this one proves it. EP:248 | Bonus: Night Killers, Blood Lusting Poachers19 Jul 202401:33:09

This week we are joined by retired Game Warden Tim Flanigan. His new book, Night Killers: Blood Lusting Poachers tells the story of his career operating in the dark of night chasing night hunters. The poaching activity where outlaws utilize bright lights to aid in the unethical harvest of deer goes by many names such as shining, spotlighting, and jacklighting to name a few, and it occurs wherever whitetails live. His stories are shocking to say the least – from the blatant disregard with wounding animals to flagrantly threatening the wardens life, which was in clear danger more times than we could count.  We explore why some folks fear “Mr. Green Jeans” and we try to understand why poaching even has an appeal to some. By the end of the recording you will have been amazed at what this man went through to protect wildlife in his home state of Pennsylvania. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

EP:138 | So You Think You Know Coyotes?14 Feb 202301:29:51

This week we are honored to have Dr. Dana Morin, an Applied Population Ecologist with the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State, sitting between the turkeys and explaining many facts about coyotes. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories?  Her vast amount of research into their habits and habitat allow her to provide us some serious insight. We learn it all and more. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

This week on the GameKeeper Podcast we’re excited to have finally had Kyle Lybarger and Jake Brown from The Native Habitat Project in the studio – where we covered as many bases as we could on native and non-native flora, wildlife habitat, burning, savannahs and other ecosystems, and more. We got downright philosophical and really “nerded out” on some cool topics, like:  what did the landscape look like 500 years ago, and how can we achieve that look again, but what would be your modern tweaks?, and what if ole Smokey The Bear never entered the picture?. We all made new friends, and learned something as well. Listen, Learn, and Enjoy!

EP:133 | A Duck Hunter's Nightmare (Bonus Episode) 20 Jan 202300:34:24

This week we get serious and hear a duck hunting story that came awfully close to having a bad ending. Like many of us want to do, Jason Cook found himself duck hunting during a major freeze up. When his dog fell through the ice on a long retrieve and couldn’t get out…like all of us would, he started to his dog in attempt to save him. It's a perilous situation and when Jason falls through the ice himself and can’t touch bottom, it gets even worse. We recorded this podcast hoping to remind duck hunters how dangerous things can get and what to do in case you find yourself in a bad situation.

This is one you might want to share with a friend.

EP:132 | Calling Coyotes17 Jan 202301:15:31

This week we discuss the art of calling coyotes. Expert caller Jon Collins of FOXPRO joins us to explain the many calls and techniques he has learned through years of chasing the crafty critters. Ole Wiley is found in every area of the country, and as Gamekeepers we worry about our fawns and turkeys.  We all knew they are formidable predators, but we learn they're susceptible to calling year round and it takes skill to regularly kill them. It’s an interesting discussion. By the way, do you pronounce it ki-yote or ki-yo-te? Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

What type of tools did they use and how did they make them? What site types did they inhabit? Did they practice any type of gamekeeping similar to how we do it today? Where do I look for artifacts, and what is ethical and/or legal means of doing so, and how do I properly document them? What do I do if I find a “site” or “mound” on my property? We also shared a couple of stories about the dark side of artifact collecting. Jessica and her family come from a long line of hardcore hunters and farmers, making her a perfect fit for this discussion we’ve been wanting to have for quite some time. Listen, Learn, and Enjoy!!!

EP:122 | We Apologize to the Squirrel06 Dec 202201:28:01

This week we humbly apologize to the squirrel. Across the whitetail’s range, our collective love of deer and deer hunting has made many of us forget about what once was a very strong hunting tradition. We don’t want to spook our deer, so we’ve backed away from roaming the woods in pursuit of bushy tails. Squirrels are a challenging target, live in beautiful hardwood habitats and can be fantastic table fare. On this podcast, super squirrel hunter George Brown helps remind us what we have been missing.  Warning: whether you’re a seasoned hunter, or are just getting into the sport – this one will make you want to break day leaning against an old oak tree with a .22 rifle by your side. Be sure and check out the outstanding squirrel and dumplings recipe in the show notes.  Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

EP:246 | Bonus: A Life of Chasing Quail and a Dog Named Puny12 Jul 202401:31:02

This week we’re joined in studio by an old school quail hunter who hunted through and vividly remembers the good ole days of bobwhites. Mr. Tommy Paulk is a larger than life character from Bullock County, Alabama that loves to hunt “pottidges” as he likes to call them.  Once a crop duster with over 30,000 acres of private land access, he flushed many a covey and tells us all about it. Who wouldn’t have wanted love to grow up where you whistle for the dogs, take off walking in any direction and be bird hunting. It’s a rare glimpse into how it once was. Also, you know that Bonnie Big Boy tomato you love from the garden, guess whose grandmother was Bonnie? You guessed it. You’ll enjoy this one. Listen. Learn and Enjoy.

EP:120 | Hunting Accidents Can Happen22 Nov 202201:39:00

This week we have three uniformed Mississippi game wardens in the studio, reminding us to be safe this hunting season with stories of other hunters who weren’t. After years of repetition it’s easy to become complacent, get in a rut and take for granted the things we need to do to stay safe in tree stands and around firearms.  This podcast is a shocking reminder to wear your safety belt, unload your weapon before you cross a fence, let someone know where you’re going, wear a life jacket in the duck boat, and much more. It’s one you will want to share with younger and new hunters and a great refresher for the seasoned. Listen, Learn and Stay Safe.

Show Notes:

We want to thank our guests Ricky Barry, Jake Guess, and Marshall McCraw for making the trip to West Point, MS to join us in studio. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with us!
