Vaccines, Risks & Real Informed Consent with Katie Collins, PA-C — A Conventionally Trained, Holistically Minded PA19 Nov 202501:02:24

Vaccines are one of the biggest decisions parents face — and for many moms, the information feels overwhelming, confusing, and often incomplete. In today’s episode, Kelly sits down with Board-Certified Physician Assistant Katie Collins, PA-C, to talk about what real informed consent looks like and how parents can navigate these choices with confidence instead of fear.

Together, we break down how vaccines are studied, what’s included (and not included) in clinical trials, and how to approach this topic from a functional, holistic lens that honors both science and intuition.

Katie also walks through one specific vaccine as a real example — sharing what the clinical trial actually measured, what safety outcomes were considered, and how the risk vs. benefit of the disease compares with the risk vs. benefit of the vaccine. This section is eye-opening, empowering, and highlights why parents deserve deeper, clearer information before making long-term decisions.

This episode isn’t about convincing anyone of anything. It’s about equipping moms with clarity, context, and confidence so they can make the decisions that feel right for their family — without shame, pressure, or judgment.

💛 We cover:

  • What “informed consent” really means (and why parents rarely receive it)
  • How vaccines are tested, approved, and monitored
  • Gaps and limitations in clinical trials parents should understand
  • A deep dive into one vaccine’s actual trial design and safety data
  • How to weigh the risks and benefits of a disease versus a vaccine
  • How to research responsibly without spiraling
  • How to communicate with other moms who make different vaccine decisions — without conflict
  • How to find confidence and community in your choices

Katie’s goal — and mine — is for moms to feel informed, calm, and confident… not confused or judged.

How We Navigated Baby Sleep (Without Losing Our Minds)12 Nov 202500:45:26

In this episode, we’re talking all about sleep — baby sleep, our sleep, and what we’ve learned along the way. Our baby Danielle actually woke up right before we hit record (of course she did!), which felt perfectly fitting for this season of life.

We share what’s worked best for our family over time, the gentle sleep strategies that have helped us all get more rest, and the lessons we’ve learned through the process — especially when things didn’t go as planned.

This isn’t a “how-to” or a strict sleep training guide. It’s an honest conversation about what real-life sleep looks like with a little one — the messy, beautiful, and ever-changing parts of parenthood where we’re all just doing our best.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • Finding rhythms that work for your baby’s personality
  • Navigating regressions, contact naps, and night wakings
  • How stress, nutrition, and environment can affect sleep
  • Letting go of the idea of “perfect sleep” and focusing on connection

If you’ve ever searched “how to get my baby to sleep” at 3 AM — this one’s for you.

Pump and Dump? Alcohol while Breastfeeding + Baby’s First Solids10 Sep 202500:55:51

Big news — our podcast has a new name! 🎉 Welcome to Functional Medicine for Momsfirst-time parents trying to navigate holistic, healthy living.

In this episode, we’re tackling two big topics for new moms:

🍷 Alcohol & breastfeeding — Should you pump and dump or just feed the baby? We share research, context, and surprising comparisons (ripe bananas = ~0.4% alcohol vs. breastmilk after drinking = ~0.08% 👀). It’s all about making an informed choice that you feel comfortable with.

🥄 Baby’s first solids — Our little one is officially sitting up and starting solids! We discuss readiness signs, BLW vs. purées, why we’re focusing on iron-rich and gut-friendly foods (bone marrow, meat stock, egg yolk, veggies), allergen introduction, and why we’re skipping sweets first.

As always, we’re blending research + real life to make parenting practical, healthy, and encouraging for moms navigating this season. Please share this episode with a mom friend who might love it too 💛

We also dive into the importance of balance: parenting, marriage, and maintaining your own identity. From hobbies that keep us fulfilled, to date nights that strengthen our marriage, we share how finding balance helps us show up as the best parents possible.

And of course… what does it mean to be an “80% crunchy mom”? We break down how we live a mostly holistic lifestyle, make healthy swaps, and still enjoy the occasional treat (yes, even Starbucks).

Cortisol 101 & Why We Changed Our Mind About Birthday Parties13 Aug 202500:49:36

This week we’re talking about how our perspective has totally changed on little kids’ birthday parties. Sure, our baby won’t remember her first ones—but we will! Parenthood is worth celebrating, even in the little ways, and making memories for us is just as important.

We also share how managing expectations when taking your baby to events makes a huge difference (spoiler: lasting an hour and a half at a party can be a win!) and why giving yourself permission to rest can be life-giving. I took an intentional unplug day, and it reminded me of the biblical principle that rest comes before productivity.

Then we jump into this week’s functional medicine topic: cortisol—the “stress hormone” that often gets a bad rap. If you’ve been dealing with:

  • Low energy, brain fog, or trouble sleeping
  • Feeling “tired but wired” at night
  • Weight changes that don’t match your diet or activity
  • Frequent illness or feeling rundown
  • Anxiety, irritability, or mood swings

…this episode is for you.

We break down:

  • What cortisol actually does in your body
  • Why you don’t want it too high or too low for too long
  • How your daily cortisol rhythm affects your energy, mood, and health
  • Symptoms to watch for with both high and low cortisol
  • My favorite way to test cortisol (DUTCH test)
  • Lifestyle and supplement strategies for balance

We wrap up by answering a listener question about our favorite baby products so far, and of course, Landon closes things out with the dad joke of the day.

Chiropractors, Baby-Led Changes & 5 Things We Wish We Knew To Help With Pregnancy06 Aug 202500:52:44

This week, we’re chatting about chiropractic care—our experiences with it over the years and why our baby now gets gentle adjustments, too. (Spoiler: it helps her sleep!)

We also talk about why we hit pause on solids. Even though we started strong with meat stock and avocado, we realized our daughter needs to be sitting up independently before continuing—and it’s a good reminder that it’s okay to change your mind as you learn and grow as a parent. That’s what intentional parenting is all about!

Then we dive into 5 things we wish we had known during or before pregnancy—the kind of stuff no one really talks about until you’re in it. We’re sharing the biggest "I wish I knew that!" moments from our journey… like what early spotting actually means, a supplement that might help prevent tongue ties, why the to-do list never ends, and more. (Oh—and Landon makes a case for the biological reality of the dad bod 😅)

We also feature your answers from Instagram, because you all had some great reflections to add.

We wrap up with Landon’s dad joke of the day, per usual. 🙃

What Your Thyroid’s Trying to Tell You (But Your Labs Don’t)30 Jul 202500:46:06

We’re in another sleep regression, officially started solids (just homemade meat stock and avocado so far!), and doing our best to set up a strong foundation for our baby’s long-term health—which brings us to this week’s topic: the thyroid.

This episode is for anyone who:

  • Feels exhausted, cold, or foggy no matter how much sleep they get
  • Struggles with weight gain, hair thinning, constipation, or low mood
  • Has been told their labs are “normal” but still doesn’t feel normal
  • Takes Synthroid (levothyroxine) but isn’t noticing a big improvement

We’re talking all things thyroid health, from what it actually does in the body (regulates metabolism, mood, temperature, and energy) to why thyroid medication isn’t always the whole answer.

I use a simple analogy to explain how thyroid hormone production works:

🔁 Your hypothalamus is like a thermometer—it senses what’s happening in the body.

🎛️ Your pituitary gland acts like a thermostat—it reads the data and decides what needs to change.

🔥 Your thyroid gland is the heater—it produces thyroid hormone to warm things up.

But here’s the kicker—your body primarily makes T4, which has to be converted to T3 (the active form) in your cells. If that conversion isn’t happening—because of stress, inflammation, poor gut health, or nutrient deficiencies—you might still feel hypothyroid even if your labs and meds look “normal.”

We cover all of that and more, including why I see Synthroid filled multiple times a day at the pharmacy and how a root-cause approach can support your thyroid more holistically.

We also answer a listener question on thyroid function and—of course—Landon wraps things up with a dad joke to keep things light. 😉

Our NICU Miracle & Why Faith Is Our Foundation23 Jul 202500:43:40

Our baby just had her 6-month checkup—cue all the feelings! She’s starting to show signs of teething (no teeth yet!), cries when held by someone new (this can be a good thing!), and somehow we’re already halfway through her first year of life.

In this episode, we pause the typical functional medicine deep dives and open up about something even deeper—our faith and how it’s the foundation of everything we do, including our health journey. We reflect on her 6-month milestone and what a miracle it is to be here after all we walked through during pregnancy and the NICU.

From early pregnancy scares to moments in the NICU when things were going from bad to worse, we witnessed little miracles—and one big one when God healed our baby overnight. We share our testimony in hopes it brings comfort and encouragement to anyone going through their own storm. Because while none of us are immune to trials, God’s presence can carry us through.

And now here we are—still surviving the 6-month baby era, figuring out teething, solids, and finding reasons to laugh every day. (And of course, Landon brings a dad joke to help with that.)

Boats, Babies, and What Led Me to Functional Medicine16 Jul 202500:38:48

We spent our first 4th of July with a 5-month-old—and what was supposed to be an hour on Landon’s boat turned into an all-day adventure with friends, babies, sunburns... and not enough snacks. 😅 I nursed almost the whole time to keep our baby hydrated (thank you, Texas heat), but I didn’t pack nearly enough food for myself—and definitely paid the price by the end of the day.

This week, we’re talking about what functional medicine actually is—how it differs from conventional medicine, and how I ended up leaving retail pharmacy to pursue this root-cause approach. After seeing so many patients on multiple prescriptions who still weren’t feeling better—and counseling women who were doing everything “right” and still not losing weight—I knew there had to be more to the story.

We chat about hormone health, gut health, detox pathways, and why just treating symptoms doesn’t always get results. We also bust a few common myths (no, functional medicine isn’t just vibes—it’s science-based when done right!) and answer some listener questions. And of course… Landon brings the dad joke of the day to close things out.

First Foods, Leaky Guts & What It Really Takes to Heal09 Jul 202500:50:39

Our baby is 5 months old, so it’s time to start thinking about first foods! In this episode, we share our plans to introduce solids in a way that supports her gut health from the very beginning—think meat stock, gentle veggies, and nutrient-dense options before diving into the fun stuff (Landon’s dreaming of torturing her with lemons already 😅).

We also dive into leaky gut—what it actually is, why it’s so common, and how the symptoms can sneak up in unexpected ways (like fatigue, brain fog, skin issues, or mood swings). We cover some supplements that can help support gut healing—check out the full protocol on MolineMethod.com via our Fullscript link (with 10% off as a thank you for supporting our small biz 💛).

Landon gets a surprise list of lifestyle changes he might not be ready for (but they’re simple enough to try!), and we wrap up with a listener question about how gut health can impact mental health—plus, Landon’s dad joke of the day!

Pharmacist Explains Tylenol in Pregnancy: Autism Risk & Baby’s Brain01 Oct 202500:46:01

As a licensed pharmacist and functional medicine consultant, I’ve had countless conversations with moms about Tylenol (acetaminophen) — one of the most common medications used during pregnancy. But after a recent press conference from President Trump’s administration raised concerns about a link between Tylenol use in pregnancy and autism, many women are left wondering: Is it really safe?

In this episode, I break down the science in plain language so you can feel confident and informed. You’ll learn:

  • How Tylenol works in the brain to reduce pain and fever
  • How the liver processes it (and why glutathione matters for detox)
  • How it crosses the placenta and what that could mean for your baby’s developing brain

We also look at the study cited in the press conference (Ji et al., 2025, Environmental Health), which you can read here: https://ehjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12940-025-01208-0.

Landon joins me to share his perspective and to ask questions that help remove bias and sort through the headlines clearly. Together, we want to give you the tools to process new information with confidence and calm.

Healing the Mom for the Family to Heal with Dr. Jordan Stafford, Holistic Chiropractor17 Dec 202500:41:02

What if healing your body isn’t about doing more — but about removing what’s standing in the way?

In this episode of Functional Medicine for Moms, Kelly sits down with Dr. Jordan, a holistic chiropractor and fellow mom, to explore how true healing goes far beyond back pain or symptom management. Together, they unpack how the body is designed to heal itself when physical, emotional, and chemical stressors are addressed at the root.

Dr. Jordan explains the philosophy behind holistic chiropractic care, including the triad of health — structural alignment, emotional wellbeing, and chemical/nutritional balance — and how ignoring one area can keep moms stuck in exhaustion, anxiety, or chronic symptoms. The conversation dives into how emotions are stored in the body, what happens when we suppress feelings like guilt or fear, and how techniques like Neuro-Emotional work can support nervous system regulation and long-term healing.

You’ll also hear about the powerful connection between mothers and their children, and why supporting a mom’s healing journey can create ripple effects throughout the entire family — emotionally, physically, and energetically.

This episode is for moms who:

  • Feel like they’re doing “all the right things” but still don’t feel well
  • Want a deeper understanding of emotional healing and the nervous system
  • Are navigating identity shifts, purpose, and personal growth in motherhood
  • Believe healing is a journey of self-discovery, not just symptom relief

Whether you’re early postpartum or deep into your motherhood journey, this conversation will leave you feeling grounded, validated, and empowered to trust your body’s innate wisdom.
