My wife and I just drove our daughter to the Airport back to college. It was such a great summer and I talked a little bit on why it was so great. Benjamin Kamon of Kamon Knives is an Austrian Blademith whose work has graced the cover of Blade Magazine and is held in high regard in the knife making community. When you look at his work the design decisions he makes are beautiful, elegant and well thought out. The contrast between forged blade and mechanically fastened handle are stunning and must come from his experiences between being a mechanic working on huge trucks and his time as blacksmith fabricating railings and ornamental iron. We had a great talk about how he developed his signature style, forging and paying respect to the legend Lin Rhea. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to having him on again. Thanks again, -GF

Meet Tansu is back and we had a great conversation. Owner and Bladesmith of Tansu Knives and Hunter Valley Blades, Mert has a unique perspective in the knife making game. Born in Turkey, he moved to the US as a chef, met his wife in the hospitality business and decided to take a chance on living in Australia for a bit. Life was good and the slower pace allowed for more free time. So after years of collecting and using knives Meat had the opportunity to take a class and his rise as a world class knifemaker took off. 

The conversation on creativity and the similarities between cooking and knife making was an eye opener for me and is great philosophy for any maker. We talked about The international Wootz Society and all the  great events coming up in Australia. And the podcast he’s on called Knife Making Down Under and the importance of it for Australians during lock down. A lot of fun and I look forward to seeing Mert and the guys next year at Blade. Leah Aripotch returns to the show and we dive deep into metal sculpture. Leah is an incredible artist known for painstaking detail and beautiful forged and fabricated nightmarish botanical pieces. Leah has grabbed the attention of the the knife making world including her recent sculptural collaboration with Bladesmith Joshua Prince and most recently, taking home “The Best Collaboration” Award at this year Blade Show with Bladesmith Seth Lopez. We all got together to recap the most recent Blade Show where they were all testing  for for the American Bladesmith Society’s Journeyman Smith and in Nick’s case, Mastersmith. They all told their stories on why the decided to test, the stresses in preparing for testing and their takeaways from the experience. It’s an extremely unique insight into the 

ABS testing experiences and it was a fun listen.

This episode of the Downward Spiral was recorded in 2012 When Niko Tavernise and I were regularly going to either his porch or my shop with a bottle of booze and recording an episode. This particular episode Niko was working on the film Noah with Russell Crow(see I knew who it was) Back from filming in Iceland, we just wanted to shoot the breeze, tell funny stories and fool around. This ep is interesting because it recounts a story from the last time I installed Public Art. I had a bad experience doing it and it for shadows the work I’m installing now . Please forgive any ignorance and general horseshit, I’ve grown. Enjoy the show.

Matt Stagmer is back and on the road to test for the Journeyman Smith designation from the American Bladesmith Society (ABS). It’s no easy feat; even though Matt has made thousands of swords and knives the 5 he’s working on to submit have to be the best he ever made. We had a great conversation talking about how the process is going and how its influencing how he makes knives now. Will he will be under more scrutiny because of his wildly popular Youtube Channel: That Works or the years being on Television making shows about weapon making? Matt was very humble, sincere and forthcoming about his experience and fear during the Performance Testing process of the JS Testing. Matt’s the man and I’m sending the best vibes to him for his Road to JS.

2 years ago I didn’t think i’d have put out 104 episodes every week without a break. Consistent shows that get better and better. Andrew Alexander is funny,  compelling and full of great stories with excellent flair. Matt Harris is a Blacksmith and sculptor in Perryville, Maryland where he has a studio and company specializing in architectural forgings and Sculpture called Matthew Harris Studio. Matt builds beautiful railings, gates and residential ironwork that range from classic to more sculptural and you can see the connection and his personal style. Creating movement and flowing lightness is a theme in both his upwardly billowing sculpture “undulate” outside the Dansko distribution center as well as a recent railing that cascades downward following the staircase. 

We had a great time talking about his growing up with a game warden father, the development of Art Vs. Craft and how we rationalize both.

I miss the days working in an ornamental ironworks shop with big projects and teamwork and it was great talking about that avenue of blacksmithing. I’m glad someone like Matt is leading the way as an Artist Blacksmith. Thanks again Matt, I really appreciate it. - All the best, Geoff

Matt Parkinson is a Bladesmith and Swordmarker, of Dragons Breath Forge in Wolcott, Connecticut, a ABS Journeyman Smith and the first ever Forged in Fire Champion. We had a great time talking about how he got his start and his love of swords. His experience building them and how knowing the history has given him a unique perspective on famous swords and how to spot fakes. We talked about what forging is and the misconceptions, how he came into teaching and embarrassing moments at renaissance fairs. For Episode 100 I hade my original Podcasting partner back. Niko Tavernise and I had a podcast 12ish years ago called “The Downward Spiral” where we’d catch up on what we’re doing- Niko is a Set photographer in the film industry and has a unique perspective on Hollywood. Then we’d spiral; I roam the Internet looking for weird stories of depravity and we’d dissect them. Recently the ones I find the most fun are about smugglers and what they go through to get their contraband across boarders. This week we told some personal smuggling stories and find ourselves with people getting caught in unfortunate ways.

Jesse is one of my good friends and is not only a great blacksmith, but is a wealth of knowledge on the history of blacksmithing, anvils and an instructor at The Center for Metal Arts. It’s very rare when I get to record a podcast from anywhere but my shop; I’m usually speaking to a guest remotely from the comfort of my Jeep recording booth. I had the honor of teaching a weekend workshop at The Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown, PA and after having the pleasure of podcasting with CMA’s executive director Pat Quinn before, it seemed appropriate to bring a travel mic and get some new perspective. What a great opportunity! We recorded early in the  morning, right before I started teaching the second day of forging a ‘Turnstile Friction Folder’ workshop. Spending time with Pat and seeing his careful and purposeful approach for the direction for the school was exciting and overwhelming. The campus is an incredible place that was the former Cambria Iron Co., housing enormous 3000lb Chambersburg Utility hammers. We talked about Pat’s restoration and what they plan on doing with these massive hammers. The one currently restored hammer is worked with a 5 person team; the hammer is so difficult and expensive to run that a smaller hammer with identical controls was installed to practice the choreography of team forging on smaller scale models before moving up in scale. We also talked about Johnstown and the historic flood that carried houses away into the stone bridge within sight of the school; and what happened recently when the fire department told Pat that the river was going to flood again.

I am so glad I got to see what Pat, Dan Neville and the CMA team are doing. Very exciting to see; especially how the history of Cambria Iron Co. is clearly influencing Pat’s work. I’m honored to be an instructor there and can’t wait to see what they creat next.

Ben Paik has a fascinating story. Growing up a popular kid in a rural town in Korea, his parents immigrated to California where Ben had to figure out how to start over in an American High School speaking little to no English. It wasn’t easy. What lead him to being a maker is a tale of redemption and reclamation of human spirit. Finding used and broken skateboards as the material of choice, Ben glues then together to form blocks and mills them down to make useable lumber for various projects; from Tables to Bike frames Ben documents his builds on his Youtube channel and is a great follow on Instagram. 

We also talked about shady landlords, his folding staircase going viral, getting got on his European vacation and a lot more. Ben is such a great follow and we had a lot of fun. He’ll definitely be back. Thanks again Ben! - GF

Lin Rhea is a Master Bladesmith from Prattsville, Arkansas and one of the most innovative knife makers in the game today. After years as a Bladesmith and earning the ABS ‘Master’ designation he became very involved with the Historic Arkansas Museum as the Resident Blacksmith. The nature of the position gave him access to research about classic blacksmithing techniques, which lead him to the doorstep of Peter Ross, one of America’s leading blacksmiths. Learning colonial blacksmithing techniques from Peter was an inspiring turning point in Lin’s work; and on the long 17 hour drive home he sparked the idea for his now classic  “X-Rhea” knife. This forged one-piece knife, with no need for handle scales, is a unique and innovative concept that answers complicated questions with incredibly simple decisions.

We talked about in great detail and came to some interesting conclusions. Lin is a hero of mine for many reasons and I’m honored to have spoken with him. I look forward to having him back! THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL RIDES AGAIN!!! If you ask most people in the knife making community to create a list of influential contemporary bladesmiths, it’s hard for me to believe Salem Straub wouldn’t be high in the mix. His style and execution of complicated mosaic, Damascus knives are easily recognizable for the crisp contrasts, intricate patterns and thoughtful decisions. My friend Derek from Malden is one of the kindest people I’ve met. He’s a maker in Massachusetts who came into his own later in life after recuperating from an injury, when his son suggested he watch DIY videos on Youtube. James Fleming is a US Army combat Veteran who is now a full time Bladesmith in Iowa. We had an interesting conversation starting off talking about how our upbringing and relationships with our parents influence our parenting now. We touched on James’s early days leading him into military service and the difficult transition into civilian life and ultimately becoming a Bladesmith. James has a frontier style and one of the things he makes is a war club that was influenced by muskets, which lead to a fun dive into American History. Description:  Joe Maynard is a retired Army Helicopter who has served his country proudly for 20 years. After finding the love of knife making at a tough time in his life Joe helps others and gives back by traveling around in his mobile forge to show people how knife making can be a rewarding pursuit. We talked about his time flying and made the connections between his former life in the army and how it translates into his voyages around the country today. We also covered his time as a contestant on the survival TV show Naked and Afraid and how he dealt with the insane conditions there. Joe is an incredibly generous guy and his serving a higher purpose helping veterans and others people in need. I appreciate his time and look forward to hearing more about his exploits. Stephanie Hoffman is an accomplished welder, instructor, and the face of the American Welding Society. She has a fabrication shop on the Jersey Shore, where she grew up called Underground Metalworks; and it didn’t all come without a price. The beginning of her welding career wasn’t easy as she faced obstacles that she had to overcome; she was overlooked and not welcome in an industry that she loved but she never gave up. Her experience is extraordinary and the good she is doing by ushering young people into welding is commendable. We touched on her life, welding and the bittersweet parts of being a judge on Netflix’s Metalshop Masters. Stephanie is an inspiring person and her story is one of inner fortitude and perseverance. Keith Mitchell is a woodworker who studied boatbuilding and learned the traditional way of boat design to become a Shipwright. His experience at school, learning these classic techniques informed his methodology and changed the way he views being a craftsman. The preparation of timber as well as the calculation and prediction of steam bending wood perfectly has very parallel philosophies to blacksmithing and it was a very enlightening conversation connecting crafts. Keith is an extremely talented and knowledgable friend and 2 the hours sailed by- we could have kept going, which is always a good sign. We’ll definitely have him back.

My buddy John Erianne, AKA @sunsetforgenj on instagram, came in for a catch up which is always fun. We talked a lot about hammer making and what’s the right hammer for you. We also decided which styles hammer are overrated, underrated and perfectly rated. It is crazy to me the general public has very little understanding of how people who forge see hammers as tools of creativity as opposed to destruction and we talked about that a lot. I’ve learned a lot about hammer making from John and always appreciate his time and friendship.

Josh Radnor is an Actor, Director, singer/songwriter and my Kenyon College classmate. You may know him from his films ‘Happythankyoumoreplease’ & ‘Liberal Arts’ or as Lonny Flash on the Amazon series ‘Hunters’ and of course as Ted Mosby on the smash CBS sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’. I know him from 3rd floor McBride, the freshman year dormitory we lived in at Kenyon College.

This was an extremely interesting look at the ongoing career of a successful Hollywood actor from the standpoint of someone who remembers his early years as an undergraduate acting student. Seeing Josh in his senior year performance of Romeo & Juliet (of course I knew it wasn’t Hamlet…) to seeing a billboard of him in Grand Central Station above the entrance to the subway advertising a new TV Show: “How I Met Your Mother”, was wild. I couldn’t be more happy for him for pursuing his goals and dreams. 

With 2 weeks to prepare for the starring role in the Broadway show ‘The Graduate’ to working along side Al Pacino, Josh was extremely forthcoming about being a professional creative on the highest level and talks about the tolls taken along the way. I can’t thank Josh enough for his flexibility and time for coming on the podcast and look for ward to seeing him soon.

I wanted to originally call this episode “The Full Blast New Year’s Show with Noah Vachon”, but we really just had a good time talking and catching up it didn’t matter that it was the end of the year. When you talk to Noah Vachon, it’s a totally easy and engaging conversation that the “end of the year wrap up” plans were thrown out the window; so is that goofy title. Noah graciously returned to the show and it was fascinating to see how his experience as a guitar builder informed his methodology in knife making. His new shop has an incredible history in his life and we talked about how our age & life experiences definitely helped us in the development of each of our businesses. It definitely turned into “Knife Talk Jr.” but not enough to glaze over the eyes of the non-knife making listenership. (Don’t worry the only tip was how to make Charbroiled Oysters). Thanks again Noah, you have an open door policy.

Hope this finds you well and if you’re reading all the way down to here, I just want to say I wish you a peaceful and prosperous New Year. I appreciate all the kind words sent in to the show and stories of how this podcast & KTP got you through some dark times. I know how that feels- Radio was my companion when I was alone as a child; a friend keeping me company or a Nightlight to help me sleep. *(if you use this podcast to get you to sleep I’m banning you from listening P.S.) Alex Pole is a Blacksmith and published author of the beautiful cookbook: ‘The Forge Kitchen’ and his newest book: ‘Blacksmith: Apprentice to Master’. We had an awesome time catching up and talking about both books which really captures Alex’s voice. Brian House is a maker who sold his computer business to put all his efforts into his new Grinder Business: Housemade Industrial. Home of the Revolution Project. He’s also a knifemaker, YouTuber and host of the Work For It Podcast on the Makers Network. We had a great time when he first came on and I’m glad he made it back. At the age of 19, Josh Smith was the youngest person to get the Mastersmith designation from the American Bladesmith Society. Now he is the President of Montana Knife Company, one of the fastest growing production knife companies in the United States. The ground swell of support in the hunting world is a testament to the belief people have in Josh and the person that he is. Knife drops selling out in less than 2 minutes is now the norm for MKC and the demand has led customers to excitement and frustration at the prospect of the getting one or being shut out on a drop day. 

We had a great conversation about hunting, Josh’s journey and the future of MKC which is pretty exciting. He even dropped some MKC breaking news! 

On a personal note, I’m sorry I didn’t bring this up on the episode because it stuck with me about the kind of person Josh Smith is. In the beginning of the pandemic my family was hit hard by the first wave, especially my wife who is a frontline worker. Josh would call me and check on her and tried to find out where I lived so he could order food for us. I’ll never forget that and I appreciate his friendship.

Steve Pellegrino is a knifemaker and owner of Pellegrino Cutlery in Philadelphia. We had a great conversation meandering around in his early love for rocketry and what it’s like having Jimmy Diresta as a professor at the School of Visual Arts. From starting a stage fabrication shop in New Jersey to being an Apprentice at a straight Razor company in Portland, Steve has seen a lot and has had his share of hard knocks; not to mention his most recent scare in a freak car accident. I’m convinced the early rocketry hobby was the foundation for a life of being bold. To painstaking build complicated and expensive rockets only to shoot them into the sky, not knowing if they will ever comeback ,or in once piece, or at all is a characteristic of not coveting your work as well as being comfortable with making bold decisions without the fear of the consequences. A very enviable characteristic as working Bladesmith- thanks again Steve!

Tomer Bother and his wife Noam created the iconic company Florentine Kitchen Knives and have solidified themselves as having one of the most recognizable designs in the custom knife world.  The lines, colors and design decisions didn’t come from no where. Tomer’s days in industrial design school gave him the foundation of considering the important direction in product design: ‘Form follows Function’. How Tomer started down the road of knife making is a story of redemption, coming back from failure and inner fortitude. From Tomer’s time riding around India on a motorcycle he helped build to meeting the people who would help bring Florentine Kitchen Knives to fruition its a robust story from an understated man. After a big weekend at Catskill Mountain Makers Camp, the Modern Forge Team is back with the entire roster: Cliff Dufton, John Erianne, Jesse & Carrie Savage. Julia Sexton is the writer I want to be. We met a few years ago when she wrote an article on me for Edible Hudson Valley. When the piece came out I was floored at how accurate she was down to the smallest of details. How did she paint such a vivid and complete picture when we only spent a couple of hours together? 

Julia’s writing has the distant echoes of Hunter S. Thompson gnashing his teeth into her words; a visceral and satisfying portrayal of her subject. Most of her work revolves around the food scene which got us talking about another hero: Anthony Bourdain and his relationship to HST. We talked about the anxiety of her being a Restaurant Critic as well as all the repercussions of her reviews as well as how she got her nickname. It was a fun time for sure and I can’t wait for her to come back.
