昔、ある村に、重吉と六兵衛という二人の少年がいた。

二人は大の仲良しで、喧嘩はおろか口喧嘩さえしたことがなかった。

しかし、重吉は村一番に賢く、六兵衛はのろまで馬鹿。

しかも、重吉の家は村一番のお金持ちで、六兵衛の家は村一番の貧乏。

正反対の二人が、なぜ、そこまで仲が良いのか、村の人は不思議に思っていた。

六兵衛は村の皆から馬鹿にされ、いつもからかわれていた。

そんな六兵衛を可哀想に思った重吉は、あることを思いつく。

秩父にいる家来は、三峯山の法師に守札と薬をお願いしました。

法師は7日待って欲しいといい、家来は8日目までには整えてください、とお願いしました。

法師は、1日2回の祈祷をして守札を、昼間は山々を巡って薬草を揃えました。

8日目に守札と薬草が家来のもとに届きましたが、誰が届けるか、と思案しました。

その時、秩父の速（HAYA）という部下が申し出ました。

速（HAYA）には、鬼カゲという名馬があり、また本人も脚が速いことで有名でした。

His retainer in Chichibu asked a priest in Sambu Mountain for a talisman and medicine.

HAYA had a famous horse, Onikage, and was also famous for his fast legs.

ハムーチャは一大決心をして、その凄い術を教わるために旅に出ました。

ある片田舎の山裾にある小さな村に伝わってきた時、子どもたちは目を丸くして喜びました。

そして、子どもたちだけで焚き火をすると、焚き火を囲んで輪になって歌ったり踊ったりして、山の小僧を呼ぼうとしました。

けれど、歌えど、踊れど、山から小僧はやってきません。

それでも子どもたちは何度も何度も、焚き火をして歌い踊り続けました。

ある日のことです。その日もいつものように焚き火を囲んで歌い踊っていると、

焚き火の煙の中に、大きなおじいさんの顔が現れて、そして高笑いをしました。

ある冬の日、仕事を終えての帰り道、雪が降ってきましたので休憩し、もう止むだろうと薄暗くなった帰り道を馬を引いて進んでいると……

彼は、ちょっと金が入ると、すぐに酒を飲んでしまいますので、村の皆からは正覚坊とあだ名されてました。

ある嵐の晩、平助がいつものように酒を飲んでますと、玄関の戸を叩くものがありました。

Whenever he had a little money, he would immediately start drinking, earning him the nickname "Shokaku-bo," or "the drunkard.

One stormy night, while Heisuke was drinking as usual, there was a knock at the front door.

警官殺しの犯人をひと目見ようと、停車場には多くの人だかりができていた。

小泉八雲もそのうちの一人で、彼も犯人の様子を見に来ていた。

ヘンデルという医師が薬草を発見し、村人たちを伝染病から救った。ヘンデル医師が亡くなると、村では丘の上にヘンデル医師の銅像を建てることにした。

妻は、側室の雪子御前に願いがあると言う。雪子を呼び、傍らに座らせると、

「殿様を大事にしてください。他の者に殿様の寵愛を奪われてはなりません。

　最後に一つ、庭の桜が見たい。雪子、私をおぶっておくれ」

雪子が背中を向けると、死に際の病人とは思えない力で立ち上がり、妻は雪子の背中に覆いかぶさった。

The wife of a feudal lord was suffering from a long illness, and the lord was watching over her. The Daimyo promised to make a sincere offering to his wife after her death.

The wife said that she had a wish for his concubine, Yukiko Gozen. He called Yukiko and sat her down beside him.

Please take good care of My Lord. Do not let anyone else take away His Highness' favor.

　One last thing, I want to see the cherry blossoms in the garden. Yukiko, carry me on your back."

When Yukiko turned her back to him, his wife stood up and covered Yukiko's back with a strength that was unlike that of a dying sick person.

朗読「死骸に乗る者」小泉八雲

　離縁され悲しみと怒りの中に死んだ女があった。心臓は止まり、体は氷のように冷たくなっているのに、他に死の兆候がなかった。

　誰も女を葬ろうとしない。女は男への復讐のために男が帰ってくるのを待っていたのだ。

　女が死んだとき男は旅の途上だった。戻ってきて、その話を聞かされ、男は恐怖に駆られた。暗くならないうちに助けてもらわないと、女に八つ裂きにされると考え、辰の刻に陰陽師の元へ飛んでいき、助けを乞うた。

　陰陽師は死んだ女の話を知っており死体も見ていた。陰陽師は男に向かって、私の言うことは何でも聞くように、言い聞かせた。助ける方法はただ一つしかないが、それは恐ろしい方法だった。男は身震いしたが、やることを約束した。

There was a woman who was divorced and died in sorrow and anger. Her heart had stopped and her body was as cold as ice, but there were no other signs of death.

No one wanted to bury her. The woman was waiting for the man to return to take revenge on him.The man was on his way when the woman died. When he returned and was told the story, the man was terrified. Thinking that if he did not get help before dark, the woman would tear him to pieces, he flew to the onmyoji at the hour of the dragon and begged for help.

The yin-yang master knew the story of the dead woman and had seen the corpse. The Yin-Yang Master turned to the man and told him to do whatever I tell you. There was only one way to help, but it was a horrible way. The man shuddered, but promised to do it.

朗読「安芸之助の夢」小泉八雲

安芸之介は、郷士仲間の２人と庭の木陰でおしゃべりをしている最中に眠気におそわれ、うたた寝をした。

彼が目を覚ますと、大名行列の一行が近づいてくる。

その豪奢さに驚いて眺めていたが、なんとその行列は彼の家の前で止まった。

彼らは常世の国王の使者であり、安芸之介を召喚したいということだった。

使者に連れられて常世の王宮にやって来た安芸之介は、王の娘婿として厚く迎えられる。

そして王宮の南西にある島の統治を任され、そこで美しい妻と子どもたちに囲まれ穏やかな生活を送った。

While chatting in the shade of a tree in the garden with two fellow local samurai, Akinosuke fell asleep and dozed off.

When he awoke, he saw a procession of feudal lords approaching.

He watched in amazement at the opulence of the procession, but to his surprise, it stopped in front of his house.

They were messengers of the king of the Everlasting Kingdom, and they wanted to summon Akinosuke.

Accompanied by the messenger, Akinosuke arrives at the royal palace of the everlasting world, where he is welcomed as the king's daughter-in-law.

He was entrusted with the governance of an island southwest of the palace, where he led a peaceful life surrounded by his beautiful wife and children.

夫は妻に「再婚しない」と答える。

妻は「ならば、私が死んだなら、庭の梅の木の下に埋めてください。そして、小さな鈴をお棺に入れてください」と願う。

夫が約束すると、妻はすぐに息を引き取った。

出羽国の戸村十太夫に使える梅津忠兵衛は怪力で勇敢な若侍であった。

ある日、城門の夜番の勤めに行こうとした時、その途中で若い女に呼び止められた。

こんな夜中に、若い女が、こんなところに立っているのは怪しいと思ったが、

女は赤ん坊を抱いており、「頼もしい梅津様、今夜私はかなり大きな困難を抱えて、最も苦しい勤めを果たさなくてはならず、お慈悲でほんの一刻ほどこの赤子を抱いていては下さいませんか」と子供を渡してきた。

梅津は怪しんでいたが、一時の感情で断るのも不親切だと思い、子を抱いた。

「どうか私が戻るまで、その子を抱いていて下さい。ほんの少しの間で戻って参ります」

Chubei Umetsu, a powerful and brave young samurai, was a servant of Jutayu Tomura in the Province of Dewa.

One day, as he was on his way to his night duty at the castle gate, he was stopped by a young woman.

He thought it suspicious that a young woman would be standing at such a place in the middle of the night, but she was holding a baby in her arms.

She was holding a baby in her arms and handed the child to him, saying, "My trusty Master Umetsu, tonight I have to fulfill my most arduous task with great difficulty, and would you be so kind as to hold this baby for a moment or so?

Umetsu was suspicious, but felt it would be unkind to refuse on a moment's notice, so he took the child in his arms.

Please hold the child until I return. I will be back in just a few moments.

16歳になって、体は大きく、力もあったが、頭の中は二歳児並みで、小さな子たちとばかり遊んでいた。

男は、斬首され、その首はコロコロと転がり、庭石にかじりついたかのように見えた。

The samurai said. If you are really that vindictive," the samurai said, "then bite down on the garden stone in front of you, even if it is only your head.

The man was beheaded, and his head rolled around, seemingly biting into a garden stone.

昔、江戸小石川に鈴木と云う旗本があって、屋敷は江戸川の岸、中の橋に近い所にあった。

この鈴木の家来に忠五郎と云う足軽がいた。体格も良く怜悧で、仲間からの信頼も厚かった。
しかし、ある時、忠五郎は無断で外出しているようになり、仲間たちの知るところになった。初めは、この妙な挙動に対して誰も何にも云わなかった。

しかし、忠五郎は蒼白く衰えて来た。そこである晩、忠五郎が丁度家を抜け出そうとする時、一人の年取った侍が彼を呼んでいった。

そこで彼女は夫を呼んで、最期の願いを言った。

江戸霊岸島に喜兵衞と云う金持ちの瀬戸物店があった。喜兵衞は六兵衞と云う番頭を長く使っていた。六兵衞の力で店は繁昌した。

番頭一人では管理しきれなくなったので、手代を一人雇うことにした。六兵衛の甥であった。この若者は悧巧で商売はますます盛んになった。

7ヶ月もすると、この若者はひどい病気になってしまった。名医を呼んで診せたが、原因がわからない。

六兵衛は、若者が恋の病にでもかかったか、と思って問うたところ……

On the island of Reigan in Edo, there was a rich man named Kihei, who owned a store selling Japanese ceramics. Kihei had a watchman named Rokubei for a long time. The store flourished under Rokubei's power.

The shop was no longer able to be managed by the watchman alone, so Kihei decided to hire a helper. He was Rokubei's nephew. This young man was good and the business continued to flourish.

After seven months, the young man became very ill. He called in a good doctor to examine him, but he could not find the cause of the illness.

Rokubei asked him if the young man had a love sickness.

昔々、中国の山東省に許という漁師がおりました。

許は酒好きで、毎晩、川へ出て網を打ちながら酒を飲んでいました。

許の酒の飲み方は変わっていて、まず盃に一杯やってから、次に地面へ酒を垂らし、「まあ、お飲みなさいよ」と言うのです。

長い間、漁師をやってきた許には、川で死んでしまった友達がたくさんいたのです。

地面へ垂らしたお酒は、友達への捧げ物だったのです。

He would then drop his drink on the ground and say, "Well, drink it." Having been a fisherman for a long time, Hsu had many friends who had died in the river.

The sake he dripped on the ground was an offering to his friends.

　場所はある婦人雑誌社の面会室。主筆と小説家・保吉が話す。

　保吉は婦人雑誌に書きたいと思っていると小説があるという。

　ある女主人公・妙子がいて外交官の夫がいるにもかかわらず、達雄という才能あるが貧しい音楽家と懇意になってしまった。

　女主人公は達雄は私のことを愛しているのではないかと直覚する。

　夫がいないときも達央は、居間でピアノを弾いていく。けれども夫が帰ってきて、達雄の訪問を拒否する。

　その二か月後、達雄は出張へ行き、妻も一緒に行かなければならない。

　しかし、旅先で妙子は夫よりも達雄を愛していたと感じるようになり、達雄に手紙を書く。

　達雄は「私はあなたを愛していた。今でもあなたを愛している」という妙子からの手紙をみて「畜生」と怒鳴りだす。

　Yasukichi says he has a novel he wants to write for a women's magazine.

　There is a female protagonist, Taeko, who, despite having a diplomat husband, has fallen in love with a talented but poor musician named Tatsuo.

　The female protagonist realizes that Tatsuo might be in love with me. When her husband is away, Tatsuo plays the piano in the living room. However, her husband returns and refuses to allow Tatsuo to visit.

　Two months later, Tatsuo goes on a business trip and his wife must go with him.

However, during the trip, Taeko begins to feel that she loved Tatsuo more than her husband, and she writes a letter to Tatsuo. Tatsuo says, "I loved you. I still love you." When he sees the letter from Taeko, he starts yelling at her, "Damn you.

朗読 「仙人」 芥川龍之介

　北支那の市から市を渡って歩く見世物師に李小二（RiSyouji）という見世物師がいた。鼠に芝居をさせるのを商売にしている男である。

　天気がいいと人通りの多いところに立って歌を歌って人を寄せる。大人も子供も足を止める。人垣ができると李は鼠に面を被らせ衣装を着せて演技をさせた。芝居が終わるころには屋台の前に出してある盆の中に、いつの間にか、銅銭の山ができるのである。

　ある寒い日の雨の降る午後、李は商売から帰るところで道ばたに小さな廟を見つけその軒下に駆けこんだ。

One cold, rainy afternoon, Li was returning home from his business when he spotted a small temple on the street and ran under its eaves.
