Tools to Become the Dad You Want to Be in 202617 Dec 202500:44:41

In this special episode, we're dropping you into a live segment from our Ignite 2026 online summit with our brother and coach, Matt Drinkhahn, host of The Eternal Optimist podcast.

Matt walks us through what it actually takes to live in alignment with your true identity as a family man with a business — not a businessman with a family. He shares the story of a life-altering accident that stripped away his old identity (tall, athletic, successful in business) and forced him to rebuild who he was from the inside out, rooted in faith, fatherhood, and core values.

From there, Matt gets intensely practical. You'll be guided through the same exercises he uses with high performers to:

  • Name and disarm your deepest fears

  • Rewrite the script of your inner critic

  • Build tiny daily tweaks that compound into massive change

  • Use a simple "emotional artifact" to stay present with your wife and kids

This isn't theory. It's reps, practice, and a long-game approach to becoming the man 2026 requires of you.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why tying your identity to business, status, or your body sets you up for collapse

  • How acceptance (not denial or hustle) unlocked a new identity for Matt after spinal surgery

  • A journaling prompt to expose the voice of your "villain" or inner critic

  • A simple script for welcoming fear to the table so it loses power over you

  • How to craft one tiny daily tweak that keeps your calendar and habits aligned with your true identity

Why an "emotional artifact" (a small object in your pocket or on your desk) can anchor you in presence with your family

If you're serious about making 2026 your most aligned year yet — not just with goals, but with who you are as a husband, father, and leader — this conversation is a powerful place to start.

FRD is solving a huge problem for dads. Our culture has turned "Dad" into a joke. Go ahead, google Dad and you'll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it's a Homer Simpson mentality, and it's BS.

Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there's still more to learn, together.

Most guys find it hard to find "their crew." Finding other committed men, who are successful in life, and want to put family first – these guys are rare. Is this you?

In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values)

421: Matching Family Tattoos, Legacy Planning with Your Kids and Slowing Down to Be Present at Home with Christopher Nicolaysen09 Jan 202400:58:34

Christopher Nicolaysen knows what it's like to grow up without a lot of money and with a father who wasn't around much because of work. As a parent, he's done everything he can to ensure his daughters had a father who was home as much as possible and fully present when he was with them.

In our conversation, you'll hear what family time is like in the Nicolaysen household. From getting absolutely demolished by his daughter playing Mario Kart, board game nights, why they decided to get matching tattoos and how he avoids the stereotypical working Dad "How was your day" question.

But it's not all fun and games. Christopher and his wife have already paid for their funerals; they've talked to their kids about money and involved them in their legacy planning. We covered a lot of ground, but the big takeaway here is how he's created such close bonds with his daughters, who are grown-ups now, how he de-escalates confrontation and keeps his marriage fresh and thriving after 26 years. Enjoy!

A Wide-Ranging Conversation Through…

  • Learning good work ethics from Dad
  • The quickest way to lose respect from your kids
  • Being present for those ordinary moments
  • Getting smoked in Mario Kart by your kids
  • Staying engaged leads to a healthy marriage
  • Legacy planning and talking about money with kids
  • The $20 tipping rule
  • De-escalation methods to manage arguments
  • Advice on parenting, marriage, money, and health
  • The FRD 5 - Five Daily Commitments

Today's guest is Laurie Handlers — Tantra educator, talk show host, and intimacy coach. She's the author of Sex & Happiness: The Tantric Laws of Intimacy and leads programs through Butterfly Workshops, Inc. and the International School of Temple Arts.

  • The training mindset: treat intimacy as a skill (courses/coaching > guessing).

  • The presence playbook: breathe together, watch her face, phones down.

  • The 10/10 framework women name: Presence, Connection, Safety, Communication, Skill.

  • A simple boundary script and the repair rule: "First to return to love wins."

393: The World's First Teen Innovation Accelerator with Navid Nathoo and Viola Seda12 Jul 202300:57:04

Is the education system dropping the ball with our children? Our world is changing at breakneck speed, and as parents, it's our job to make sure our kids aren't left behind.

My guest, Navid, is the Co-Founder of The Knowledge Society (TKS), the world's first "human accelerator" exposing teens to future-shaping tools like AI, blockchain, and green energy.

One of his students, Viola Seda, has worked with AI in billion-dollar companies and was part of a team working on a cure for type-2 diabetes using gene therapy and nanotech. The crazy part is, she's 14 years old!

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • How schools fail to prepare our kids.
  • Kids can impact the world too!
  • Help them to find their calling, then step aside.
  • Learn more from life's stumbles.
  • The downside of parental overprotection.
  • Unconditional love to take on the world.

389: How Family Board Meetings Can Level Up Your Family Life with Jim Sheils14 Jun 202300:51:30

Eighteen summers. That's about all the time we have to really connect with our children before they step into the next phase of their life.

And if we're not careful, we can easily lose track of how quickly those summers slip away. That's why I'm absolutely thrilled to share this conversation with Jim Sheils.

Jim is the co-founder of Board Meetings International, a company that specializes in parent/child retreats for entrepreneurs and their children. He's also a partner in the largest build-to-rent organization in the United States, with over a whopping $600 million in assets under management that pulls in over $40 million annually for investors.

Jim's work has been celebrated in the Front Row Dads community for years, and for good reason. Known as the "Crazy Glue" for entrepreneur families, Jim felt compelled to address one of the most tragic issues of modern life - the disconnect between hard-working entrepreneurs and their families.

He developed the legendary "Family Board Meeting" process that has helped thousands of business owners strengthen their bond with their families. And I'll just say that my son Ocean loves it! We all do. He keeps the countdown chart ready for our next board meeting!

He's also the author of The Family Board Meeting, which I highly recommend you check out. In fact, we have a real treat for you today, gentlemen.

One last thing! If you've already read the book and you'd like a new copy, show Jim some love, write a review, and email a screenshot to us help@frontrowdads.com with your address, and we'll mail you a copy.

And if you're new to the podcast or our community, write a review of this episode, send a screenshot to the same address, and if you're among the first five people to do it, we'd be happy to send you a free copy as well. (US Residents Only)

In our conversation, you'll learn:

  • The key ingredients for making the Board Meeting work like a charm in your family.
  • Three steps for building trust in your family that'll last forever.
  • How to crush the walls and barriers that are between you and your children.

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • Quality time is the best gift we can give our loved ones.
  • Rules for getting the whole family involved in your "Board Meeting."
  • How steering clear of toxic people improves your relationships.
  • What doesn't get scheduled doesn't get done.
  • Why Jim's bond with his wife gets better with time.
  • Ego is the biggest roadblock to personal growth and intimacy.
  • Guiding your kids to figure out life on their own.
  • Get rid of your need for perfection; it'll make life more fulfilling.

388: The Art of Surrendering and Breaking Free of Our Self-Delusions with Brent Perkins07 Jun 202300:46:09

Anyone who has been in a loving marriage will tell you that there are peaks and valleys along the way. So what happens when things aren't going so well?

For some, playing the blame game and pretending you're the victim is the natural response. But as today's guest will tell you, when you fully surrender and ask yourself some tough questions about your role in the relationship, a pathway to move forward in the midst of a dark time can be found.

After enjoying tremendous success for over 20 years as a serial entrepreneur, Brent Perkins' life shifted in 2021 with a difficult divorce. This led him on a journey of personal growth and a book called Papercuts: The Art of Self-Delusion.

Brent is a Dad to two amazing daughters and has already made a huge impact in our FRD Brotherhood. His contributions have led to a significant increase in participation in our Bands which has been awesome to watch.

So, today we're talking about what it really means to surrender, the role that blissful ignorance plays in our relationships and how the truths that we believe can become illusions. And if we can embrace the art of self-delusion in a positive way, we can flip the narrative and move forward in a happier and healthier way.

In our conversation, you'll learn:

  • Strategies for modeling, trust, vulnerability, and awareness in our kids.
  • The difference between surrendering and victimhood.
  • How to recognize, unpack, and shatter our self-delusions.

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • Surrendering to the good and bad in life without playing the victim game.
  • Pitfalls to our pursuit of personal growth.
  • Moments that build anxiety and fear in ourselves.
  • Guiding our kids to vulnerability and earning their trust.
  •  Want to help others? Help yourself first.
  • Being grateful for the moments when we were jerks.
  • The power of creating space to be vulnerable with other men.
  • How we unintentionally harm those that try to support us.

387: Everything is Possible with Family By Your Side with Travis Macy and Mark "Mace" Macy31 May 202300:52:06

Gentlemen, we are privileged to have not one but TWO incredible human beings with us today. My guests are an inspirational father-son duo, Travis Macy, and his father, Mark "Mace" Macy.

For those that don't know, Travis and Mark are legendary endurance athletes. Travis has finished more than 130 ultra-endurance events in 17 countries. And his Dad, Mace, spent thirty years competing in Colorado and around the world in ultra-endurance competitions and is one of the few who have finished all eight Eco-Challenge events.

Their secret? The Ultra Mindset - a relentless determination that refuses to bow to any obstacle.

When Mark was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Travis and his Dad decided to take on the challenge of Eco-Challenge Fiji together - a grueling seven-day, 400-mile marathon of trekking, climbing, biking, and paddling through the jungle - for one final race together, to prove that anything is possible with family by your side.

In their new book, A Mile at a Time, Travis and Mace weave together excerpts from Mace's passionate personal journals alongside a first-person narrative by Travis, telling the story of their incredible journey and what they learned along the way.

Their story is one of courage, determination, and above all, love. It's a reminder that in the face of adversity, the ties that bind us give us strength and much more.

In our conversation, you'll learn:

  • Strategies for fostering resilience and mental fortitude.
  • How to cultivate a sense of unity and teamwork within your family.
  • How the "Ultra Mindset" can help as you juggle between training, family, and mental health.

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • The deep bond between Travis and Mark and their shared love for endurance racing.
  • Choosing love, happiness, and hope.
  • How to fight for your family's future and enjoy quality time in the present.
  • The benefits of exercise and being in nature has on your mental health.
  • Embracing adversity as a catalyst to greater resilience and self-assuredness. Mace's mantra, "It's all good training."
  • Insights for those dealing with Alzheimer's.
  • The comfort of having someone besides you who'll always have your back.

Krystian Nylund: Airline Pilot by Day, Super Dad by Night - FRD Member Spotlight24 May 202300:29:03

This will be a 7-part series where I'll be asking them about their lives as Dads and we'll talk about what their experiences have been like so far in our amazing group of family men with businesses, not businessmen with families.

I hope you'll check out these conversations with some badass members of our community each week. And don't be afraid to share these episodes with your friends and let us know your thoughts along the way!

Here's what you need to know about today's guest, Ben Golden.

Kristian Nylund is father to Adeline (7) and Stella (5) and resides in Spokane, Washington with his girlfriend Kelly.  Growing up with Norwegian immigrant parents who chased the American dream, he learned from an early age that taking risks is vital to success. Having traveled overseas to visit family multiple times throughout his childhood, he developed a love for flying and a passion for traveling/aviation.

Kristian started his first flying job at a regional airline (Horizon Air) in 2006, and throughout the next decade accumulated enough flight time flying for airlines and private aircraft owners to get hired at his dream job flying for Delta Air Lines. He is currently a Captain on the Airbus 220 based in Seattle.

With the freedom and scheduling flexibility an airline career can offer, it opened the door to find a new challenge in business ownership and real estate investing.  In 2020, Kristian acquired a flight school and aircraft maintenance shop in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. As Co-Owner and Chief Flight Instructor of Coeur d'Alene Aviation & Maintenance, he spends his time teaching and mentoring students and flight instructors to become pilots and future aviation professionals.

Outside of aviation, Kristian and Kelly have taken an interest in real estate investing and have recently acquired multiple properties for both short and long-term rentals in Washington and Northern Idaho.

After enduring a divorce and battling alcohol addiction for years, Kristian has embarked on a path to sobriety, dived deep into emotional healing, and dedicated his time to what is most important; becoming the best father, significant other, and person he can be.

386: Our Children's Mental Health and Jason Reid's Mission to End Teen Suicide10 May 202300:55:35

I think we can all agree that when we were kids, things were much different than they are today. Most of us probably spent our days racing our bikes, building forts, and chasing frogs around the pond.

The fact is, our kids are growing up in the middle of a raging mental health crisis. It's no wonder why anxiety and depression are on the rise among teenagers with all the pressure to succeed or be popular with unrealistic expectations fueled by social media, or worse, by their parents.

I'm thrilled to have Jason Reid with me today for another conversation on this important topic. Jason is a partner at CEO Coaching International, where he coaches top executives on achieving success. Tragically, after losing his 14-year-old son to suicide in 2018, Jason's focus shifted to helping other families navigate the complex world of mental health.

He founded TellMyStory.org, a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers parents to support their children through mental health challenges. Jason's mission is nothing short of inspiring - to end teen suicide by 2030.

In our conversation, you'll learn:

  • The telltale signs that your child is grappling with depression and anxiety.
  • Parenting strategies for helping kids deal with their mental health struggles.
  • Why institutions are dropping the ball when it comes to tackling the mental health crisis.

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • How the media is exacerbating our kids' insecurities.
  • The tragedy that transformed Jason into a leading mental health advocate.
  • Empowering our kids to become "mental health athletes."
  • What kids wish their parents knew about their struggles.
  • The dangers of employing authoritarian tactics on your kids.
  • How to talk to your children so they feel understood and safe to be vulnerable.
  • How to tell if your child is going through a mental health crisis - and what to do about it.

Here's what you need to know about today's guest, Ben Golden.

I'm married to my beautiful wife, Lauren. We have one daughter, Annabelle, who is about a year and a half old and goes by "la princessa" at daycare. She's already working her cuteness on people.  I've spent 15+ years in the energy software space, mainly around energy trading and risk management applications.  From managing sales teams, to global project implementation teams, and customer success organizations I've been on the people facing side my entire career.   One of

my passions is finding that right combination of people and technology and seeing how it can change people's perspectives, engagement, and even lives. The power of an engaged and enabled team is something I am constantly in awe of.

My wife and I have always been working on side projects..  We recently sold our home services business this last summer and are now going head first into real estate.  Specifically, storage facilities under the guidance of Mike Wagner, another FRD legend.   If that wasn't enough, we are in the middle of selling our home in Houston and heading into an RV while we look for a house or property on the Dripping Springs side of Austin.  Wish us luck!

384: AI and ChatGPT: The Next Big Thing for Dad's to Buy Back Their Time with Perry Belcher26 Apr 202300:55:47

All right fellas. By now, you've probably heard about ChatGPT and how AI is taking over. So what does that mean for us family men with businesses?

The way I see it, you can either hop on the train and use AI to level up your Dad game, buy back your time and scale your business. Or, you can dig your heels in and resist it with every fiber of your being and inevitably get left behind in AI dust.

Joining me for a mind-bending conversation is none other than Perry Belcher. Perry is an investor and serial entrepreneur who went from incredible success at a young age, to being broke and bankrupt to a multi-millionaire. He co-founded Digital Marketer, a top-notch digital marketing training company with over 300,000 students, and hosts the largest marketing event in North America, the Traffic & Conversion Summit.

Once you hear what he has to say about AI and ChatGPT, you'll come out with a fresh perspective about all the advantages that AI has to offer if we simply take the time to use it properly. Buckle up because AI is here and it ain't going away.

In our conversation, you'll learn:

  • The incredible story of how Perry earned 800k as a teenager, went bankrupt before he was 22, and bounced back to build a multi-million dollar business.
  • Why ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other technologies are just a drop in the ocean compared to what's coming.
  • How individuals and businesses are only scratching the surface of AI's full potential.
  • The ways in which using AI can make you a better parent.

Some of my favorite moments of the conversation:

  • The impact AI will have on parenting.
  • How infinite intelligence is different from infinite information.
  • Why now's the time for bold moves with AI.
  • Simple ways that ChapGPT and AI can be used in your business.
  • How YouTube is the greatest resource for learning about AI.
  • Using AI and printers to make our own food?

We are in the business of building better families.

While most dads would say that family matters most, the challenge is they feel guilty knowing their careers get the best of them, and their family seems to get the rest of them.

We help Dads become family men with businesses, not businessmen who have families, so they can thrive personally AND professionally.
