Confused Dogs, Overwhelmed Humans: The Real Training Issue30 Jan 202600:14:46

Send a text

In this episode, Josh reflects on his 2025 podcast recap (now reaching listeners in 28 countries and 160+ cities) and dives into a problem he sees every single day: confusion. Not stubborn dogs. Not lazy owners. Conflicting information, buzzwords without context, and advice that lacks clarity.

From puppies to reactive dogs to anxiety cases, the pattern is the same. Owners try everything — YouTube, social media, trainers, friends — and end up frozen, second-guessing themselves, and feeling ashamed to ask questions.

Josh breaks down:

  • Why “consistency” without clarity just creates pressure
  • How social media amplifies confusion instead of helping
  • Why shame stops learning — and learning is what dogs actually need
  • What real communication in dog training should look like
  • Why clarity, not trends or flashiness, is what truly creates change

This episode is for dog owners who feel lost, and trainers who want to explain better, not louder.

If you’re overwhelmed, you’re not failing. You’re navigating chaos, and remember, clarity changes everything.

Fresh Food, Real Science for Dogs - With Special Guest Massimo from Cani Naturali15 Dec 202500:24:57

Send a text

In this episode, Josh sits down with Massimo — a professionally trained chef and certified canine nutritionist — who is redefining dog food in Montreal through his company, Cani Naturali.

What began as a way to help his own dog’s allergies evolved into a gourmet slow-cooked meal service built on real, human-grade ingredients, precise nutrient balance, and lab-tested recipes. Massimo explains why ultra-processed kibble can’t compare to fresh, whole foods, and how proper nutrition influences everything from digestion and coat health to energy and behavior.

Josh and Massimo also explore the often-overlooked link between diet and behavior, sharing how even small nutritional changes can support a dog’s confidence, focus, and overall mental well-being.

This conversation is all about community, collaboration, and raising the standard for what we feed our dogs. If you’ve ever wondered whether fresh food truly makes a difference, this episode will change the way you look at your dog’s bowl.

Being Positive 15 Jun 202300:13:57

Send a text

Simple as it might sound, it might be difficult to focus when it comes to being positive in dog training.

  • There are up and downs in everything in life. Consistency is key in dog training. Whether it's reactivity, resource guarding, or any other type of behavior modification.

  • Take these mini-wins. Wins come in different contexts.

  • Recovery time is what Josh talks about often during his training sessions. Going to the root of the problem is a long-term process. We need to figure out ways to manage THE behaviors. Why does our dog do what they are doing?

  • Breaking through the barrier takes time. Being optimistic in what you're doing, in the end, it'll be much more rewarding.

In this episode, Josh used the example of reactivity during a walk to show us how to learn through failures.

Montreal to Beijing: Two Worlds of Dog Training20 Oct 202500:19:45

Send a text

In this special travel edition of From Woof to Wow, Josh takes us all the way to Beijing, where he dives headfirst into a completely different dog training culture. From luxurious pet resorts and structured “board and train” programs to certified trainers and mandatory obedience routines, Josh explores what sets Eastern training apart from Western approaches — and what both sides could learn from each other.

He compares Montreal’s owner-centric “coach-style” training to China’s intensive, trainer-led model — where dogs may spend months in full-time boarding schools. Josh unpacks the pros and cons of each system, from relationship-building and consistency to discipline, structure, and socialization, while sharing his first-hand experiences visiting top Beijing pet resorts like Noble Pet Resort.

Tune in for a raw, eye-opening reflection on how culture shapes our connection with dogs — and what it really means to raise a well-trained companion, no matter where you live.

Dog Parks and Alternatives30 Mar 202300:26:07

Send a text

As the weather gets warmer, Dog Park is a major topic we talk about.

Do we bring our dogs to the dog parks? What are the alternatives? Can it be dangerous?

A few alternatives are:

  • Hikes / Trails
  • Playdates with neighbors/friends
  • Agility course: set up a simple route in your own yard!
  • Jogging with your dogs
  • Doggy daycare

If you don't have an open space at home, a doggy daycare can be super helpful.
What do we look at when looking for a nice little doggy daycare?

  • Dog vs. Human ratio
  • Is it a friendly social space?
  • Do they have active rest / mental stimulation?
  • Do they have a training regiment?

Always remember to follow the public rules, and watch for your dog's body language.

Find a way to help distract your dog from separation anxiety, desensitize, and boost your dog's confidence. In general, dog socialization!

Dogs and Children - Part 116 Mar 202300:24:57

Send a text

A very practical episode for dog owners experiencing some type of difficulties with your new puppy and your kid(s)!

Josh talked about how important it is to understand and measure the emotional well-being of your dog. And during tough times, what "play" is happening with your dog and your child?

Examples of pups with kids, while your kids feel hurt, but the pups don't stop?  What are the children's actions?

We need to keep in mind that our dogs have emotions, especially puppies that might be much younger than your children. What do your pups need? Attention? In most scenarios, what is exciting your dogs?

Capture the moments when the pups are calm, reward them with affection and play, focus on the good behavior! Remember puppies and children can all be unpredictable sometimes. What we need to do is try to explain and educate our kids by telling them why the dog reacts like this? Why does the dog bark? Why does the dog nip?

The key points are to show your pups less excitement, meaning you'll need your kids' cooperation to a certain degree (yes this might be more difficult!). We need active rests for your pups, for your kids, and most importantly for YOU!

"Treats" Good or Bad? - Manners Edition Series02 Mar 202300:26:46

Send a text

Treats do NOT always mean cookies!

Treats can be a ball, a toy, games of tug and war or fetch; actual food/snacks. Even going for a walk can be a treat.

The reward is what your dog defines as a "treat". By knowing your dog's beloved choice of game, snacks and toys can easily guide you to the positive reinforcement.

Hear out Josh as he gives some examples of the things we're most probably doing right now at home! Are we ignoring our dogs when they are actually calm? Remember the "Arousal down time" is when we give them the "treats".

We also have to keep in mind to proactively reward when the dogs are calm (good behaviour).

What about talking to them in a soft tone? That is a reward too! Dogs can pick up patterns/sequences. A great tip is to give them "trail mix" as different levels of treats.

Jumping in Dogs - Manners Edition Series23 Feb 202300:21:58

Send a text

One of the basics when it comes to dog training. However, it is still the most asked topic and can be quite challenging! Jumping!

Josh talks about the strategies when it comes to jumping. Using examples and hands-on techniques when you have guests over.

It is crucial that we talk to our guests, let them know you have a jumping dog(s), and ask them to help you ignore the dog when it comes to greetings/leaving. We want less excitement and more practice.

We can leash our dogs 5-10 mins before our guests come over, which helps you control any outbursts. We also need to wait till your dog is in a calm state. Then reward.

Key points are:
#1. Focus on the Positives;
#2. Our guests need to help us by listening;
#3. Don't be shy to take breaks (Active rests).

Keep up the training! And stay positive!

Reactivity - Behavior Modification16 Feb 202300:30:07

Send a text

In this episode, Josh talks about the hot topic of Dog Reactivities. How to help you and your dog with the behavior modifications?

  • What does reactivity look like?
  • When dealing with your dog's reactivity, what do we focus on?
  • What should you aim for during training?

It's essential to focus on the "Distance". Using detailed examples that can help guide you through—some basics used in Canine Education's Behavior Modification Program.

There's also "ditching the bowl", filling the "cup". When? Based on your dog's body language. We want to build trust between you and your dogs!

The tone we talk to our dogs, soft tones and proactively letting your dog know, by rewarding them for their good behavior.

Always remember, this takes time. Dealing with reactivity, and anxiety takes patience and time to turn around. We don't want to put a bandage on, but to really find the solution. Mini goals are important!

Stay positive!

Is Your Dog Dominant?26 Jan 202300:21:09

Compared to THE wildlife - Wolves, dogs being their descendants might be seen directly as being dominant or to still have the traits of their "ancestors". Well, are they?

Dogs, archaeological evidence shows they've been domesticated by humans for over 30,000 years! Then why are your dogs sometimes showing these so-called "characters" of dominance?

Back Then, We Had NO Idea...30 Jun 202500:40:39

Send a text

In this heartfelt and often hilarious episode, Josh and Sam reflect on how their pet care businesses began—not with a grand vision, but from simple needs, passion, and a little bit of chaos.

Key Highlights:

  • How it all started:
Sam launched her cat-sitting business after needing care for her own five cats. Josh found his path to dog training through a chance opportunity and an early mentor who told him, “You were meant to do this.”
  • Side hustles to full-time:
Both began their businesses as side gigs, juggling jobs, school, and long commutes. Growth was slow but steady—and filled with sacrifices (think $5 training sessions and Christmases spent working).
  • The role of passion:
Entrepreneurship, they agree, requires a touch of madness. They recall long hours, burnout, fast food, and doubt—but also the drive to build something meaningful, not just profitable.
  • When it got real:
Josh credits early clients like Sidney and Kevin for boosting his confidence and allowing him to go full-time. Sam grew her team gradually before finally quitting her office job six years later.
  • What keeps them going:
They talk honestly about money, burnout, imposter syndrome, and being misunderstood by non-entrepreneurs—but ultimately, they’re driven by impact, connection, and the belief that this work changes lives.
  • About PetPreneur University (PETU):
The episode closes with an update on their new project: a training program for pet industry pros that blends real-world experience with mentorship.

Send a text

In this episode, Josh Taylor (Canine Education) teams up with Dr. KJ Goldenberg to unravel the real reasons behind canine anxiety, aggression, and resource guarding. They dive into how medical issues, missed warning signs, and misconceptions about dominance contribute to behavioural problems.

Some key factors they discussed:

Creating a Stress-Free Environment

Understanding Resource Guarding & Medication’s Role

Misconceptions About Dog Behavior

Why Many Owners Struggle With Dog Training

The Medical Side of Behavioral Issues

Similarities Between Parenting and Dog Training

A Tragic Case Study: When Medical Issues Are Missed

Training + Medical Care = Better Outcomes

Behavioural issues often have a medical root—a vet check-up should always accompany training.

Medication is not a "quick fix" but a tool to make training more effective.

Owners need to respect a dog's communication (e.g., growling is not "disrespect" but a warning signal that should be acknowledged).

Dogs are not robots—they have emotions, physical sensations, and stressors that influence behavior.
