how to be more mindful with your money this holiday season02 Dec 202500:30:07

Episode 42: Happy holidays, sweet soul! As the end-of-year busyness ramps up, so does the pressure to buy, to give, to do. But what if you could move through this season with more intention, less impulse, and a whole lot more alignment?

In this episode, we’re diving into mindful money spending: how to apply your yoga practice to your purchases. We’re exploring the ways you can use your dollars to support your community and make more impact. Instead of answering every Black Friday email or filling your cart simply because something is “on sale,” we explore how to pause, choose consciously, and redirect your energy (and money) toward what’s aligned with your values.

You’ll learn:

✨Why shopping small truly matters (and the real impact it has)

✨How I’m personally being more mindful with my own money

✨Simple shifts to avoid impulse-buying and practice presence

✨Ways to support my small biz, Talon J Yoga, and this podcast as I prepare for a winter season break

✨A little “homework” to help you start spending with clarity and care

This episode is your gentle reminder that yoga isn’t just something we do on our mat—it’s something we live. Every choice, every dollar, every action is part of your practice. Let this conversation guide you into a season of spending with intention and integrity.

intro to ayurveda with Tal: understanding your dosha, your energy, & your true balance18 Nov 202500:50:56

Episode 41: In today’s deeply nourishing guest episode, I’m joined by Ayurvedic Women’s Hormone + Health Coach, yoga teacher, and retreat leader Tal (@Yogatationca) for a beautifully grounded introduction to Ayurveda — the 5,000-year-old science of life that teaches us how to live in alignment with our bodies, our energy, and the seasons around us.

If you’ve ever wondered “What is Ayurveda?”, “What’s my dosha?”, or “How do I actually stay balanced?” … this episode is your beginner-friendly, heart-centered roadmap.

Together, we talk about:

🌿 What Ayurveda really is (in a clear, practical, non-intimidating way)

🌿 The connection between yoga + Ayurveda as sister sciences

🌿 How the three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — shape your natural energy

🌿 What balance and imbalance look like for each dosha

🌿 How your “primary” and “secondary” doshas work together

🌿 Daily and seasonal Ayurvedic practices you can start today

🌿 How to tune into your body, your cycle, and your current season of life

Tal also shares her personal healing journey — from hormonal imbalance to discovering Ayurveda as the missing piece — and the simple rituals that keep her grounded, calm, and aligned. This conversation is warm, wise, and full of “ah-ha” moments. If you’re craving more harmony, more energy, or a deeper understanding of yourself… start here!

Ayurveda always brings us back to balance — gently, intuitively, and one small step at a time.

practicing discipline (tapas) in moderation01 Jul 202500:26:36

Episode 31: In this episode, we’re talking about tapas — a Sanskrit word often translated as “discipline,” but with layers that go far beyond hustle and hard work. Tapas is the inner fire that fuels transformation, but it’s also the wisdom to know when to pause and reset.

Coming back from a soul-nourishing trip to Nantucket, I’m sharing what this ancient concept really means, how to practice consistent effort without spiraling into burnout, and why true discipline also requires balance, boundaries, and moderation.

Inside, you’ll hear:

🔥 The roots of tapas in yoga philosophy and its connection to heat, fire, and discipline

🌿 The balance of discipline in moderation (brahmacharya)

🧘‍♀️ Why slowing down is sometimes the most productive move you can make

📖 What my own burnout revealed — and how I’m resetting boundaries this season

a candid conversation—celebrations, seasonal shifts, and vulnerability in business10 Jun 202500:27:00

Episode 30: This episode marks 30 (!!) episodes of From Mat to More — and in the spirit of that milestone, I’m doing things a little differently this week. Instead of teaching, I’m pulling back the curtain to share what’s been unfolding in my practices, both on and off the mat.

Join me for an honest, unscripted check-in as I:

  • Celebrate some BIG wins in my business (and personal life!)
  • Share the seasonal shifts I’m embodying right now in food, movement, and energy
  • Reflect on what it’s really like to show up online as a heart-led entrepreneur
  • Get vulnerable about visibility, reassurance, and the beautiful discomfort of growth

I also tell a funny story about a little mix-up I made on last week’s episode — a reminder that it’s okay to not be perfect and to simply laugh and move forward.

Whether you’re navigating a busy season, feeling the stretch of self-growth, or just need a moment of grounded human connection — this one’s for you. Tune in, take what resonates, and don’t forget to reach out and let me know if this episode landed. I love hearing from you!

sober curiosity & saucha: my alcohol-free journey27 May 202500:26:00

Episode 28: In this vulnerable episode, we dive into the growing sober curious movement and how it’s unfolding through the lens of yoga philosophy — specifically the Niyama of saucha (purity). I’m finally ready to share my own experience with alcohol, my decision to explore an alcohol-free lifestyle, and the spiritual shift I’ve discovered along the way.

We’ll explore:

  • The science and stats on how alcohol affects our physical body, sleep, and anxiety (hello, hangxiety)
  • My personal journey — from party nights in college to the spiritual shift that led me to 150+ days alcohol-free
  • How Saucha, the yogic path of purification, inspired this transformation and continues to guide me toward sattva — clarity, vitality, and inner peace

moving into mindfulness: turning asana (and life) into meditation20 May 202500:18:46

Episode 27: Spring might pull us off the mat and into the garden, but that doesn’t mean we stop practicing yoga. In this episode, we explore how to approach asana on your mat as a moving meditation—and how to carry that same awareness into everything you do off your mat. From brushing your teeth to walking the dog, every moment becomes an invitation to return to presence.

I’ll guide you through tangible ways to turn your everyday routines into meditative practices and share personal stories of using mindfulness to shift a tough day into one full of intention and grace.

put Earth first: 10 ways to connect and care for our planet22 Apr 202500:24:57

Episode 23: In this special Earth Day episode, I’m inviting you to step outside, breathe deeply, and come back home to our Mother Earth. LOL at the fact I tried to keep this short and sweet, but I just had so much to say about our Earth!!

We live in a world that’s often disconnected from nature… and that disconnection is a big part of the climate crisis we now face. But with awareness comes the power to change! With this short and soulful episode, I share 10 intentional ways to reconnect with and care for the Earth, from grounding practices like earthing and tree friendships, to conscious actions like composting, consuming less, and learning more.

This isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about doing what we can, with great love. Because the Earth gives to us every single day… and it’s time we return the favor.

🌿 Expect mindful practices, small lifestyle shifts, and a gentle call to rise—not with panic, but with purpose.

🎧 Listen while sipping your favorite morning drink outside or take me with you on a springtime walk. Let's reconnect with what truly matters.

💚 Together, let's put Earth first not just today—but every day!

the 5 stages of change + why progress isn’t linear04 Nov 202500:26:03

Episode 40: We’re deep into fall (the season of change), but the truth is, we are always moving through some form of change. Whether it’s seasonal, physical, lifestyle, relationships, habits, or even identity, change is a constant part of being human.

In this episode, I introduce the 5 Stages of Change (also known as the Transtheoretical Model)—a framework that helps you understand how transformation actually unfolds. Because change isn’t just one decision or one moment… it’s a gradual (and often uncomfortable) process.

As I talk through each stage, you’ll learn:

✨ Why progress isn’t linear

✨ How to recognize where you are in your own change cycle

✨ Tools to support yourself when everything feels shaky

✨ Why discomfort is not a sign to stop (it’s part of the process!)

✨ The role of ritual + reflection in staying aligned

This episode is your reminder that change is not something we are naturally good at—it’s something you practice, gently and consistently, over time.

daily practices that ground me: morning, evening, and everything in-between15 Apr 202500:30:37

Episode 22: Feeling a little… discombobulated lately? You’re not alone, friend. This word has been showing up a lot lately—especially from students in studio—and I believe it's the ripple effect of this seasonal shift from winter’s stillness to spring’s aliveness. As nature begins to wake up, so do we. But transitioning from slow and steady to go-go-go can feel a little wobbly.

In this episode, I’m sharing the daily practices that help ground me—through every season. These aren’t just routines; they’re anchors that support my mind, body, and soul in a world that’s constantly shifting. From morning rituals like oil pulling, tongue scraping, chai time, meditation, and movement, to evening rhythms like red light therapy, gua sha, and winding down with an audiobook, this is the blueprint that helps me feel aligned, no matter the energy of the day or season we’re in.

I’ll break it all down—morning to night, and everything in between—through the lens of daily care for the whole Self. And as you listen, I invite you to reflect on your own practices. What already works for you? What could use a shift this season?

Let this episode be your invitation to reimagine your days with intention, curiosity, and compassion. Take what serves you, leave what doesn’t, and start building a daily rhythm that grounds you in your own life.

Together, we explore how sthira (stability) and sukha (ease) transform our physical postures into a gateway for deeper mindset work.

Uncover...

  • Why comfort and stability matter more than complexity in your yoga postures.

progress over perfection19 Nov 202400:20:55

Episode 8: In this episode, we’re diving into the powerful mindset shift of choosing progress over perfection. Perfectionism is an illusion that can keep us feeling stuck and frustrated. Talon breaks down why focusing on progress is more sustainable and fulfilling, shares practical strategies for letting go of perfectionism, and offers real-life examples of how small steps lead to big changes. If you’re ready to ditch the stress of always trying to get it “perfect” and embrace a journey that celebrates growth, this episode is for you!

Journal Questions

  1. Monthly check-in: What am I doing well? Where am I feeling friction / what am I not doing well? How can I adjust moving forward?
  2. Think about an area of your life where perfectionism holds you back. What would it look like in 1 year from now if you focused on making progress instead? Describe one small step you could take this week that moves you closer to your goal without needing it to be perfect.
  3. Who might benefit from your progress? This could be family, friends, coworkers, even social media followers, or podcast listeners… What would your community look like if you didn’t hold back?

mental modifications // vrttis29 Oct 202400:21:15

Episode 5: Talon jumps back into a philosophy focused episode to discuss the 5 mental modifications outlined by Patanjali. Mental modifications are categories of our thought waves, or vrttis. These are the things that spark our mind to travel:

  1. Right knowledge
  2. Misconception
  3. Verbal delusion
  4. Sleep
  5. Memory

We cover the importance between reliable and unreliable sources and how you can discern the difference between these 5 categories of thought. Spoiler: only right knowledge is reliable! Talon offers examples and insight to help you navigate the path towards thinking less — a necessary step towards enlightenment.

10 teachings from the trees07 Oct 202500:45:51

Episode 38: I just got back from a soul-filling trip to Steamboat Springs, where I caught the trees just in time as they turned for fall. If you’ve been here a while, you know how much I love the trees — they’ve been some of my greatest teachers.

From my lifelong maple, Maybelle (yes, she’s tattooed on my shoulder), to Marvin and Melanie — the trees Zoey and I visit on our walks — I’ve learned so much about how to move through life’s constant changes by simply watching them.

In this episode, I’m sharing 10 lessons from the trees — wisdom that’s helped me navigate every season I find myself in.

We’ll talk about:

🍁 Why nothing blooms all year (and how to embrace your own wintering)

🌱 Why it's important to stay rooted in your values and routines

🍂 The art of letting go, from yoga philosophy to real-life transitions

🌳 How community mirrors the forest

🌙 And why rest + self-care aren’t optional

This episode is a gentle reminder to step outside, find a tree that speaks to you, and start observing how it moves through the seasons. You might just learn something about yourself, too.

And don’t forget to subscribe to my Substack, for a deeper reflection on my trip to Steamboat and more lessons from nature.

the messy middle: lessons in transition from my back room23 Sep 202500:35:09

Episode 37: This week’s episode is a little different — it’s unfiltered and almost completely unedited. I’m taking you behind the scenes into my back room, a space that’s piled high with stuff and slowly becoming both my biggest project and my biggest teacher this fall. Cleaning out this room has become a literal, physical representation of what I call the “messy middle” — that uncomfortable in-between place where things aren’t yet finished, but they’re shifting. Just like this seasonal transition from summer into fall, the process is messy, imperfect, and sometimes frustrating… but it’s also where the magic of change really happens.

In this episode, I share:

🍂The resistance I felt every time I opened the door to my back room — and how it mirrors the transitions we resist in life

🍂Why clearing out space (physically, emotionally, spiritually) is essential before we can step fully into the next season

🍂How the yoga philosophy teachings of Aparigraha (non-attachment) and Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender) can help us navigate transitions with more trust and less clinging

🍂Reflection + journaling prompts to help you uncover your own “back room” — the areas of your life calling for release or renewal

This is a true behind-the-scenes share of where I’m at right now — messy piles and all. If you’ve ever found yourself in the thick of a transition, wondering if you’ll ever get to the other side, I think you’ll feel right at home in this episode.

And if you’re craving practices to support you through this season of change, don’t miss the Summer Slow Down Workshop Replay — a guided ritual to reflect, release, and find renewal as we shift into autumn. As a thank-you for listening, use code MTM20 for 20% off.

how to identify dysregulation and restore nervous system regulation12 Aug 202500:41:06

Episode 34: In this episode, I was called to share what I’m learning RIGHT NOW — messy middle and all. Because this is powerful stuff, and it’s changing everything for me: my teaching, my biz, and how I show up in every day life!

I’m diving deep into the magic of our nervous system — the real, biological powerhouse behind our stress and success. Spoiler alert: our nervous system is still stuck in the caveperson era, and that’s why so much of modern life feels overwhelming. But here’s the good news — when you learn how to listen to it and regulate it through techniques called 'state shifters', life gets way easier!

We’ll cover:

🧠 What your autonomic nervous system actually does (and why it freaks out over new things)

🐌 How to take small, tolerable steps into the unknown without hitting a wall

🌀 3 dysregulated states — what they feel like in your body, sound like in your brain, and how to return to regulation

✨ What the regulated state feels like and how to seek more of it in your life

🙏 Simple regulation tools you can use anytime, like mudras, breathwork, Nidra naps, and even hugging an animal 🐶

🌿 When to pause and check in so you can catch dysregulation before it takes over

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or like your hustle is running you into the ground, this episode is your new best friend. It’s a follow-up to episode 4 (know your nervous system), but with all the juicy, practical tips to help you return to regulation — in business, relationships, or just everyday life.
