Ep. 255: The Life of A Hair Stylist: Balancing Beauty, Wellness, and Lifestyle - Erika Evans29 Jan 202501:44:54

On this week’s episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Erika Evans to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Over 25 years of experience in the beauty and wellness industry led Erika (EJE) to have worked with a range of everyday women, and executives, celebrities and models. After seeing chemical damage, stressed and over processed hair, to thinning hair and hair loss, EJE noticed clients were losing self-confidence. She found that women's wellness in general was lacking due to work demands, schedules and raising families. These challenges resulted in the consumption of more fast and processed foods, prescription medications and little to no exercise. EJE has a system to help women, even a few men achieve overall wellness, a balanced lifestyle. The EJE Lifestyle Blueprint. Curated in 2010, The EJE Lifestyle Blueprint, is a uniquely planned approach through applied techniques of compiled research and formulations, using natural ingredients to improve and cure the damaging effects of unhealthy hair, skin and body. Each plan is customized to the individual needs of each client and is tracked in a HAIRPORT, a fancy version of a passport to keep up with your hair and wellness journey! During our chat Erika shared how she supports her clients who have been diagnosed with cancer, her opinion on cosmetic licensing for wig stylists, how to have hard conversations with your clients, what it’s like going from salon to salon suite, old school practices in a modern world and so much more. On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Leslie Roberson to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Leslie is the owner and creator of the Black Beauty Collective & its flagship store out of historic Hyde Park Chicago.

It will be the first Black owned beauty store that will carry exclusively Black owned brands and products. To offer growth alternatives for this critically underserved community for brands within the Collective, the BBC is a unique platform in which they receive bespoke sales, marketing and PR support to scale their businesses. Locations are slated to open first in Chicago, with subsequent locations in Houston, Washington DC, and Atlanta.

Leslie is passionate about creating opportunities for black entrepreneurs in the hair + beauty industry. Leslie's goal is to leverage her 15 years of corporate experience and her modeling connections to open doors for other black businesses.

I had such an amazing time talking to Leslie. The way that she is providing a platform and resources for black owned brands to succeed in business is truly admirable and I can’t wait for you to hear all about it!

In this interview Leslie shares:

Ep. 154: Taylar Colyar, CEO + Founder of Sip Shop Eat Shares How She Curated Experiences For Small Businesses To Network + Gain Visibility08 Mar 202301:23:51

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome the CEO + Founder of Sip Shop Eat, Taylar Hagan-Colyar, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Taylar launched the Black-Owned Immersive and IRL pop-up program, Sip Shop Eat!, back in April 2017 after being dissatisfied with her experience as a vendor. She always wished she had a full-circle resource to connect with and learn from other aspiring and successful entrepreneurs. Taylar created the platform for small businesses to gain visibility they often yearn for – it’s a community for small brands to connect, share, promote and network with like-minded entrepreneurs!

Sip Shop Eat! is an experiential platform designed to gather, connect and discover all the best food, beauty, style and drinks through IRL and virtual experiences. The platform collaborates and empowers unique indie-brands to bring consumers a world of new products and experiences to enjoy. All the brands featured at Sip Shop Eat! pop-up events are carefully curated to bring a collection of the best online and retail life experiences.

I had such a wonderful time talking to Taylar about her entrepreneurship journey and the success of her transformative events. In this interview Taylar shares:

-The experiences that inspired her to create Sip Shop Eat

-How her events have grown exponentially over the years

-The vibe + experience you should expect as a vendor + attendee of Sip Shop Eat

-What consumers can do to support small businesses

-How she manages the expectations of her vendors

-The process for planning multiple events simultaneously

-Several ways that you can profit from hosting events

-All about her upcoming Sip Shop Eat events in ATL, NY, and LA + how she’s highlighting women owned businesses

It’s time to take some notes. If you host events or have ever thought about hosting events then this interview is for you. Taylar lays it all out. Let’s go ahead and jump into this education & informative interview and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 151: Stephanie Laflora, CEO + Co-Founder Of Crownhunt, Developed A Platform To Educate Hair Stylists On Textured + Curly Hair15 Feb 202301:09:53

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Stephanie Laflora, CEO + Co-Founder of Crownhunt, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

It took being rejected for service at five separate salons due to her 4C textured hair for Stephanie to realize that something was terribly wrong with the beauty industry. Driven to solve the problems of her own customer experience and already a serial entrepreneur, storyteller, marketer, and creator, Stephanie founded Crownhunt to make life easier for people with curly hair while helping under-resourced entrepreneurs thrive.

Alongside her business partner and long time friend, Ryan Holdeman, Stephanie has spent the last decade building multi-sided platforms and working with partners to develop new business models using her background in data-driven product development and strategy. To that end, Crownhunt is a digital marketplace for textured hair, built to help existing hair entrepreneurs reach the 65% of the population with textured hair and to get their products, services, and education to the right people, more effectively. While Stephanie is a seriously driven entrepreneur, she’s also a troublemaker at heart and serious about having fun. When she’s not building her start up, she’s often mentoring other aspiring women entrepreneurs by showing them that life is one big adventure worth betting on.

I absolutely enjoyed my conversation with Stephanie and I’m so excited for what Crownhunt is doing for the beauty industry. In this interview Stephanie shares:

-What it’s like being a woman in tech

-The experiences that led her to create Crownhunt

-The lack of education stylist receive in cosmetology school on texture hair

-How Crownhunt is educating existing hair entrepreneurs

-What is was like quitting her job while pregnant during the pandemic

-Tips on pitching to investors to get them to be generous with the coins

-The benefits of crowdfunding as a financial resource for business

-The national conversation around textured hair and so much more

I’m so excited for you to hear this conversation and for my Friends in Beauty who are stylists to really tap into what Crownhunt is providing. It’s definitely a game changer and there are so many other things rolling out in the future that you should keep an eye out for. Let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Stephanie and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 147: Sam Fine Shares Words Of Wisdom + Clarity For Artists Globally After 30+ Years In The Beauty Industry18 Jan 202301:37:36

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Celebrity Makeup Artist, Sam Fine, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Long before he became a celebrity makeup artist, Sam paid his dues working behind the makeup counter of department stores, an experience he fondly refers to as “the real school of beauty”. There he came in contact with women from all walks of life that wanted one thing - to look their absolute best. He made it his mission to show them how to accentuate their unique beauty by using colors and shades that would best complement their complexions. But most importantly he helped them eliminate their doubts and apprehension about applying makeup so that they too could achieve dazzling results.

Sam’s talent and determination has taken him far from the makeup counter, making him one of today’s most sought after makeup artists. His work has appeared on the covers and pages of Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Essence, Vibe and Marie Claire and was chosen as the first African - American spokesperson for Revlon and Covergirl Cosmetics. His work has been and continues to be seen on some of your favorite celebrities such as Queen Latifah, Kerry Washington, Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson and supermodels Tyra Banks, Iman and Naomi Campbell. But it was the experiences from his formative years selling makeup that inspired him to write his first book, Fine Beauty: Beauty Basics and Beyond for African - American women, a how-to guide that highlights his many accomplishments.

As follow-up to his best-selling book, Fine Beauty, Sam introduced his first instructional DVD, Fine: The Basics of Beauty. With over 30 years in the industry Sam continues to be persistent about carving his own path as the Global Makeup Ambassador for Fashion Fair Cosmetics.

Words really can’t express how much of an honor it was to sit and have this conversation with THE Sam Fine. I had tears of emotional gratitude after this interview because it was just so surreal & such a full circle moment for me. I had such a great time chatting with him. In this interview Sam shares:

-A glimpse of his 30+ years in the beauty industry + how he developed his aesthetic

-The real behind being a celebrity artist

-How to be honest with your clients + manage their expectations

-The importance of building + maintaining relationships

-His dream client

-What’s it’s like working with Fashion Fair

-How he stays mentally tough

-2 major skills beauty pros are lacking to be successful

-Answers questions from the Friends in Beauty community + so much more

Y’all, Sam laid it all out for us. If ever you were seeking validation that you are on the right path. This interview is for you. If you ever needed reassurance that your hard work is not in vain…the interview is for you. If you just need a pick-me up…this is for you. I’m so grateful to Sam for his honesty & transparency as I know that his words will resonate & impact so many people. Please share this episode with another Friend in Beauty + leave a comment to share your takeaways from this chat. Let’s go ahead and jump into this amazing conversation with Sam Fine & if you prefer to watch our gorgeous faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 146: Personal Identity Crisis11 Jan 202300:19:08

In this episode I discuss the topic of how what we do in our personal lives, based on the habits we’ve adopted over the years, will translate to the success of our business.

People always talk about being successful and doing what successful people do but don’t stress the importance of eliminating the bad personal habits that slowly seep into our businesses.

The only thing that’s holding us back is us. We keep wondering why we’ve only gotten so far in our biz but it’s because we’ve only done what’s comfortable to change.

This is a little glimpse of the thoughts that I have. Let me know if you can relate to the topic.

Ep. 144: Seda Bilginer, Co-Founder of Esas Beauty, Shares How To Stop Micro-Dosing Toxins & Adopt An All Natural Approach To Beauty28 Dec 202201:03:41

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome the Co-Founder of Esas Beauty, Seda Bilginer, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

After working in the corporate beauty industry for a combination of over 25 years, Seda and Amanda set out to create a sustainable and all-natural farm to beauty manufacturing company.  Inspired by their mutual love for science, agritech, wellness and innovation, they saw a true need to create skincare and cosmetics that deliver superior benefits without compromising the health of the people who use them, the health of the people that make them and Mother Nature. But at the core of what this brand is, it’s simply just love. Their love for wanting better things for all of us.

Seda is determined to disrupt the beauty sector by improving upon antiquated industry norms. Inspired by her parents' work ethic and her grandparents’ love of all natural things, Seda knew from the start that she was destined to create organic products essential to wellness.

Seda pursued a degree in Chemistry with a minor in Math before starting to work in the corporate beauty sector, first in skincare formulation and then at a leading fragrance and flavor corporation, Givaudan, for over 15 years. Her experiences are diverse and include laboratory, product development, and account management in both fine fragrance and consumer products. She managed a Fortune 500 company and leader in bath and body care, to become one of the company’s largest accounts.

A proven leader herself, Seda is ready to evolve and transform the beauty industry into a modern and healthier era.

I had such a wonderful time chatting with Seda. I don’t know much about the world of fragrance aside from my faves but when I tell you Seda laid it all out for me…I was even ready to blow my candle out that I had burning after learning so much from her about the toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis without even realizing it.

In this interview Seda shares:

-Some of her experience working with a leading fragrance corporation for 15yrs

-The inspiration behind Esas Beauty

-How candle smoke is the new second hand smoke + the thousands of toxins we’re exposed to daily with fragrance alone

-How the people who make traditional fragrance products are getting sick from the production

-The fun product development process as well as supply chain challenges & solutions

-How her and Amanda’s cultural backgrounds are expressed throughout the brand

-Why big brands choose not to go the natural/organic route

-And so much more

Get ready to have your mind blown! I’m so grateful to Seda for being so open and transparent with us on the podcast. I really learned so much. If you’re interested in adopting a more all-natural approach to beauty then definitely check out Esas Beauty. Let’s go ahead and jump into this amazing conversation with Seda and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 142: How Jake Rosenberg, Founder Of Krete, Created Effective 30-Second Skincare For Men’s Unique Skin Care Needs14 Dec 202201:05:53

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Jake Rosenberg, Founder of Krete, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in economics and math, Jake has been a successful serial entrepreneur with ventures spanning software, investments, and fashion.

Jake suffered a ski accident in 2019, leaving him with a scar on his face. At the time, he felt that there wasn’t a solution for him because the products found were either impractical, marketed to women, or didn’t address his needs. From there, he learned every aspect of an e-commerce skincare business, product development, supply-chain management, and digital marketing to build a brand with performance at the core and with a simplistic design that would appeal to the modern man.

Driven by the principle that everything they make should take less than 30 seconds to use, Krete quickly became profitable with only its flagship Hydrating Facial Serum. It now continues to innovate for its community, launching new products and integrating novel technologies into its male customer experience.

I had such a wonderful time talking to Jake. He’s the first skincare brand catered to men that I’ve had on the show so I was really excited to meet him and learn all about Krete. With all of his experience in different sectors of business he was able to provide some amazing insight on what it takes to successfully operate a brand. In this interview Jake shares:

-The story behind what inspired him to create Krete

-The process of creating powerful messaging and marketing for the brand

-What men really want from their skincare routines

-The importance of supply chain management

-The opportunities that are available within men’s skincare

-Tips for successful product development

-If he would ever use AI to market Krete

-What next for the brand and so much more!

If you’re tired of your man dipping into your skincare products or if you’re a man looking for a 30 second skincare routine that’s effective then you’ll definitely want to check out Krete. Let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Jake and if you prefer to watch the interview, which I totally recommend, then tune in on YouTube. Enjoy!

Ep. 139: How Camille Calvet Combined Her SFX Expertise + The Healing Power Of Silicone To Create SilcSkin To Fight Wrinkles23 Nov 202200:56:00

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Emmy Award Winning Celebrity Makeup Artist + Creator of SilcSkin, Camille Calvet, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Camille is an entrepreneur, a mother and wife, and a two-time Emmy Award winning makeup artist with decades of experience covering up A-list celebrities’ wrinkles and spots.

While working on the set of Star Trek, Camille noticed how much smoother the actor’s faces were when she removed the silicone masks they wore, simultaneously, her doctor gave her a silicone patch to heal a scar and, in her words, “It just clicked!”

In 1999 she went on to develop & create SilcSkin, a world leader in non-invasive wrinkle treatment. SilcSkin products are specifically designed to hydrate and smooth your skin particularly on wrinkle prone areas such as the brow, around the eyes, around the mouth, the neck and the chest. The décolleté pad (for chest wrinkles) can also be used on the stomach and butt area.

SilcSkin has become the best selling wrinkle treatment pads in the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

I had a lovely time chatting with Camille and learning all about SilcSkin. In this interview Camille shares:

-Her early beginnings as a Special Effects Makeup Artist

-The cool projects that she’s worked on that led to Emmy Awards

-The most disturbing character makeup she’s ever done

-The amazing story behind the idea for SilcSkin

-The development of the brand along with it’s success + challenges

-What sets SilcSkin apart from other similar products on the market

-What’s next for herself + SilcSkin and so much more

If you are a SFX artist you will love this episode. If you or someone you know have been looking for a wrinkle treatment or preventative care for wrinkles tap in because Camille’s got you covered. She essentially took her knowledge of prosthetics paired with the healing power of silicone and made something extremely innovative and it’s so fascinating. Let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Camille and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 138: Johanne Joseph, CEO Of J’Organic Solutions, Turned Her Natural Hair Trauma Into A Successful All-Natural Brand16 Nov 202201:09:18

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Johanne Joseph, the CEO of J’Organic Solutions, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Johanne has spent the past few decades flourishing in the beauty industry as a hair care brand entrepreneur, but it was her early life, filled with trauma and tremendous low self-esteem that transformed her personal self image and her desire to make an impact in the industry.

Born in Haiti, and like most families, there were high expectations for Joanne to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. But it was her painful personal experience during her teenage years that shaped who she would become. Johanne recalls her hair being “a problem“, no one wanted to “Deal with“. She recalls the very existence of her kinky, natural hair caused her to experience significant feelings of inadequacy and emotional trauma.

Later, Johanne immigrated to the United States and took matters into their own hands. At the age of 16 , she realized she simply cannot allow people to continue to abuse her hair. She turned her pain into a successful career as a master beautician and in 2016, launched her all-natural brand, J’Organic Solutions, with ingredients that ensure coily hair gets the love it deserves. She is also the only black woman to own a beauty manufacturing facility in Florida where she employs 6 people to run the manufacturing of her 36 products.

It’s giving BOSS! I had such a great time chatting with Johanne and learning the history behind J’Organic Solutions. In this interview Johanne shares:

-Her first introduction to entrepreneurship (wait until you hear this story)

-The traumatizing experiences she had as a child with people trying to manage her natural hair

-How she developed J’Organic Solutions from scratch

-How she expanded her warehouse to keep up with the demand of products

-How she deals with strangers wanting to touch her thick, beautiful natural hair

-The importance of being mentally tough in business

-Dealing with depression as an entrepreneur

-What’s next for the brand and so much more

I’m so happy that Johanne shared her story so openly with us on the Friends in Beaut Podcast. I know that it’s one that many people can relate to and Johanne has created a solution. Let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Johanne & if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 137: Shannon Erley, CEO of Pomp, Created A Digital Platform That Helps Consumers Get Personalized Skincare Recommendations

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Shannon Erley, the CEO and founder of Pomp, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Pomp is a digital platform that helps consumers get personalized skincare recommendations. Pomp connects customers to certified estheticians who take the time to understand their skin type and concerns and hand-select the right skincare regimen.

"Shannon has worked in the skincare and beauty industry for years and was personally struggling with adult hormonal acne. It wasn’t until she started working with a licensed esthetician that recommended a good at-home skincare routine was when her skin started to improve.

With so many people getting skincare recommendations elsewhere, she wanted to highlight the importance of estheticians, who have gone to school and trained for over 600+ hours, and have estheticians be at the forefront of making better skincare recommendations. She built Pomp, a technology platform for estheticians to integrate into their businesses to make better recommendations for new and existing clients."

Anytime that I see beauty & technology integrating it gets me so excited. I had such a great time chatting with Shannon and learning all about Pomp. In this interview Shannon shares:

Ep. 134:  Crystal Wilson, Certified Esthetician and Beauty Business Mogul, Gets Real About Post-Operative Surgical Care19 Oct 202200:59:37

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Crystal Wilson to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Crystal Wilson became a certified esthetician and massage therapist after fighting depression while working in corporate America. She later grew a passion for beauty entrepreneurship, creating her own business, the Luxe Beauty and Body Studio and Training Academy. Providing over 1,000 certifications to beauty industry entrepreneurs.

She has also worked with clients of Mia Esthetics and Goals plastic surgery, some of the prominent facilities in Miami and Atlanta. With her experience working and creating an honorable reputation in the surgical community, Crystal has made it a goal to be transparent and authentic with her services, revealing the truth about post-operative surgical care.  With the glorification of plastic surgery, most people aren’t aware of the toll it can take on their bodies until after surgery.

The pre-and postoperative period is a critical time for patients to be prepared. As Crystal points out, “post-operative surgical care is more important than the actual surgery because if you don’t take care of your body after surgery, you will get infections.” Being properly informed and guided can help reduce the risk of complications and support the surgical recovery process.

I had such a fun time chatting with Crystal. I’m so intrigued by the world of plastic surgery so I had tons of questions to ask her. In this interview Crystal shares:

-How she transitioned from a career in finance to the beauty industry

-The different pre-op and post op services that she provides

-How to mentally prepare yourself for surgery

-The importance of post-operative surgical care

-What you should look for in post-op care

-How she’s educating other practitioners + providing them with valuable resources with her Columbia trips

-And so much more

I learned so much during this interview. If you or someone that you know are considering plastic surgery then definitely send them this chat to listen to. Let’s go ahead and jump into this conversation with Crystal and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Lissette Waugh, the founder of the L Makeup Institute to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

L Makeup Institute opened  to students in 2010 as a destination program that elevates beyond the typical cosmetology school into a unique and highly-sought-after learning institute. Distinct from cosmetology school programs which focus on teaching hair, skin, and nails, the L Makeup Institute exclusively teaches the art and science of makeup artistry and offers programs in all styles of makeup artistry.

L Makeup Institute is one of the few makeup school programs in the country that is accredited through Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and meets the strict industry standards for makeup artistry and special effects, which means graduates of the program are ready to enter professions immediately. And with a robust job placement and graduate services program, L Makeup Institute opens doors for graduates, leading to exciting opportunities in some of the biggest industries in the world, including fashion, film, and television.

Since 2010, L Makeup Institute has opened a second makeup school in Dallas, Texas, a beautifully appointed campus featuring ten separate training classrooms, a special effects lab, and a photography studio. L Makeup Institute has graduated over 1,000 students that have gone on to careers and work such as Grammys, Latin Grammys, One Drop, CMA’s, Billboard Awards, Resident Cirque Makeup Artist, Top Magazine Covers, and so much more.

As a fellow educator I was so excited to talk to Lissette and learn all the ins and outs of L Makeup Institute. In this interview Lissette shares:

-What inspired her to open L Makeup Institute and the evolution of the school since 2010

-How she strategically developed the curriculum to yield the best results

-The Lifestyle of a Celebrity MUA

-The demeanor and character traits that must be carried as a MUA

-The biggest misconception students have before entering the beauty industry

-What new MUA’s should be focused on business wise

Ep. 130: How Makeup Artist Mentor, Terri Watson, Is Helping MUA’s Elevate Their Social Media Presence, Marketing, & Branding21 Sep 202201:28:26

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Makeup Artist Mentor, Terri Watson, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Terri Watson, a 26 year old, Atlanta native, is the epitome of passion-driven. Her goal is to help makeup artists stop short changing themselves, attract high value clients, and crush their business goals. Holding herself to a high standard,

Terri is a visionary, a leader, and a cultivator of creating opportunities that lead to life-time connections.

-How she got her start as a Makeup Artist

-What made her pivot to education

-The sacrifices that she had to make with her biz to set herself up for success

-Marketing tactics that MUA’s can use to attract their ideal clients

Ep. 127: JD Barnes Shares His Journey From Fashion Model To Chief Photographer At Essence Magazine31 Aug 202201:07:44

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome JD Barnes to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

JD is a photographer who, although having lost complete vision in his right eye due to uveitis, takes pride in his ability to see beyond the typical and in doing so create something special every time he picks up his camera.

After returning to the states from a modeling career in Europe JD decided to pursue photography. With over 10 years of experience in the industry he has solidified a name for himself. His work has been featured in publications such as Essence, Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, and Vogue UK to name a few. While he has photographed some of the most famous artists of today — Lizzo, Billy Porter, Regina King, Alicia Keys — he’s as ambitious as ever and still pushing forward on his artistic journey.

JD believes "An artist walks by feeling, by emotion, by intuition. It's what separates us from the technicians of the world. There is no fear of wrong, only of mediocrity."

I was so honored to sit down and have this conversation with JD as he is someone who is very low-key & doesn’t typically do interviews. My persistence paid off and I was able to get him on the FIB Podcast. I’ve been following his work for years and I knew that this conversation would be a treat for my photographers and other Friends in Beauty.

In this interview JD shares:

-How he got his start as a photographer

-How his past as a model helps him as a photographer

-How losing vision in his right eye affected his photography

-Some pet peeves he has

-How photographers can strengthen their skillset

-Answers questions from the FIB community

-How to protect your images from getting lost

-And so much more

I really enjoyed this conversation with JD and I know you will too. Let’s go ahead and jump into this chat and if you prefer to watch this interview then tune in on YouTube.

Ep. 124: How Omayma Ramzy Blended Her Moroccan & Egyptian Heritage In A Bottle To Create Omayma Skin10 Aug 202201:19:12

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Omayma Ramzy to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Omayma is a British award-winning makeup artist, currently living in Los Angeles, known for her ability to perfect skin, while using color, texture and shape to express her artistry.

Her background in fine art ultimately sparked her interest in makeup, which was no surprise coming from a family of performers and artists. She also spent much of her formative youth in Egypt and Morocco, where she also learned about skin and beauty from the nomadic Bedouins of the Sahara Desert.

Today, she shares those best-kept beauty secrets with her clients as well as the masses through her skin care brand. Their Bedouin Elixir Facial Oil is intentionally formulated without chemicals/actives and instead gives a nod to her North African heritage with the addition of Neem, Moroccan Blue Tansy, Jojoba, and Argan oils. Celebrities love it, too!

OMG! I absolutely loved chatting with Omayma. Just as I thought before I met her she was a total vibe. In this interview she shares:

-Her relationship with beauty growing up with Moroccan and Egyptian heritage

-How being raised by a pack of artists ultimately sparked her creativity & launch of Omayma skin

-The formulation for Omayma skin

-How she was able to do a life drawing in Princess Diana’s apartment

-Her extensive skincare ritual that put my simple routine to shame

-Amazing advice for artist who feel like giving up and so much more

I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation. If you want to see behind the scenes of the day I recorded this interview with Omayma make sure you check out my day in the life vlog on YouTube. But let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Omayma and if you prefer to watch our beautiful face then tune in on YouTube.

Ep 119: [REWIND] Be. Do. Have06 Jul 202200:19:19

Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast Akua discusses the Be. Do. Have. mindset principle that has helped her start to take control of the direction and outcome of her business.

Akua shares the difference between the traditional way we’ve been taught that has been sabotaging us versus the route that the majority of successful people take in order to excel in their personal lives and business lives.

Whether you’re familiar with the Be. Do. Have. concept or not, this is definitely an episode that you’d want to listen to more than once to fully grasp the meaning.

If you need any additional information feel free to reach out to Akua via email or social media.

Ep. 118: How Brianna Arps, Founder of MOODEAUX & Black In Fragrance, Is Helping Level The Playing Field For Black Perfumers29 Jun 202200:56:53

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast I welcome Brianna Arps to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Brianna is the creator of the black owned fragrance label Moodeaux! MOODEAUX® exists to enhance the way scent-crazed beauty fanatics think about, and ultimately, practice self-care. A clean, luxury fragrance label that is a direct link between smelling good and feeling good. MOODEAUX fragrances are 100% made for skin without alcohol, water or dyes to help accessorize your mood at less of a cost to the environment.

As a former NYC editor who got started in beauty, Brianna has been privileged to test and write about countless amazing products — many of them created by Black women, yet none dealing with her favorite accessory: fragrance.

When the time came for her to move on and forge a new career path, she knew she had to do something about it.

But what she didn't know was how hard launching in this industry can be when you lack the contacts, resources, and funds readily available to others. MOODEAUX and Black In Fragrance are her vision and hope for change.

-Her inspiration for creating Moodeaux & Black In Fragrance

-What goes into the development of a fragrance brand

-How she leveraged her relationships from past jobs to launch Moodeaux

-The importance of doing your trademark research + trademarking your brand

-Being the 1st black fragrance brand in Credo Beauty & how Moodeaux was able to land in retails 7mos after launching

-Where to get funding for your business

-What’s next for Moodeaux & so much more

This was such a fun chat with Brianna and I learned so much about the world of fragrances that I didn’t know. Let’s go ahead and jump into it with Brianna and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast I welcome Kiyah Wright to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.

Kiyah is a two-time Emmy Award-winning celebrity hairstylist and Image Maker with over two decades of hair care experience and knowledge. In a career that started with doing hair in her grandmother’s basement, Kiyah Wright parlayed her talent and business savvy to become not only one of Hollywood’s most in-demand celebrity hairstylists, but also a successful beauty expert and entrepreneur.

In her new book, From Beauty to Business: The Guaranteed Strategy to Building, Running, and Growing a Successful Beauty Business (out May 2022), Kiyah lays out the crucial success strategies and lessons not taught in beauty schools such as managing your finances, branding, marketing, product distribution, the power of social media, and more. Filled with inspirational and relatable stories from someone who has been there, this practical, one-of-a-kind sourcebook is a vital educational resource for beauty professionals at all stages of their career.

I had such a wonderful time chatting with Kiyah. I’ve been following her for years on Instagram so it was an absolute treat to finally meet her. In this interview Kiyah shares:

-The 7 proven success principles that helped her to achieve her goals

-How to diversify with different streams of income

-The importance of financial literacy and the financial lessons she had to learn the hard way

-Why you should have gratitude for the journey

-Preparing your mindset for success

-Why you should know your banker

-And tons of business resources + advice

This is over 20 years of experience talking to us on this episode. One of the things I was excited about too is that Kiyah is a DC girl! So anytime I see someone that’s successful from where I’m from it gets me hyped.

So get ready to take some notes and let’s go ahead and jump into this chat with Kiyah Wright and if you prefer to watch our beautiful faces then tune in on YouTube.
