Nine days before Rachel was to give birth to her first child, her beloved birth keeper, Candace, was tragically killed in a car accident. Grief-stricken, panicked, and suddenly faced with new decisions, Rachel chose to freebirth.

This week, I’m joined once again by Kristin Hauser, a beloved and regular guest on the Free Birth Society Podcast. We weave through the stories of Kristin’s four births, with a special focus on her most recent freebirth and the profound lessons it offered.

Kristin shares the raw reality of experiencing excessive bleeding in her fourth birth, and how it initiated her into a new relationship with her blood and her body. For the first time in her mothering journey, she was required to stay in bed and truly receive care, nourishment, and love from the women around her.

What happens when you walk away from everything and find your own path to motherhood?

In this episode, we hear from Julia, a Montana mother of two who walked away from the corporate grind, sold her home, and set out on a radically different path to motherhood, one rooted in sovereignty, sisterhood, and self-trust.

Julia shares how her first wild pregnancy unfolded while traveling the West Coast in a trailer, living off-grid in national forests, and finding community through The Lighthouse membership. With a deeply ingrained medical upbringing, Julia had to unravel layers of programming to reclaim birth on her terms.

She tells the raw and beautiful stories of birthing her babies on raw land in the Montana winter, catching her first baby unexpectedly with bath towels and a shoelace, and welcoming her second in a fast, intuitive birth in the same off-grid trailer. From navigating boundaries with family to tandem nursing and raising her children outside the system, Julia’s story is a powerful testament to the courage it takes to live differently.

This week on the show I talk with the sweet and courageous Kelsey who shares her big stories of sexual abuse, teen motherhood, and becoming wheelchair bound with MS. In her most recent pregnancy, she experienced a true 12 month pregnancy which she contributed to being, at the time, a fruitarian. Kelsey tells us the wild story of fleeing from Taiwan in labor and barely getting off the plane in time to freebirth her 3rd daughter in a hostel in the Philippines! She shares openly about the abuse she endured, her radical lifestyle, and leaning on the connection she developed with her breath, body, and mind. This week we have my friend Karlin on the show, sharing her journey into sovereignty. Karlin’s first experience of pregnancy ended in an abortion in the medical system, which came with it many lessons for her to digest.  When her second pregnancy ended in a first trimester early birth, she turned to her partner, the land, and the wisdom of her own body to find her way forward.  Her third pregnancy resulted in her sweet daughter being free birthed, supported by her husband and well.…yours truly, on the phone.  Karlin speaks honestly about how much resistance she had to birth itself, feeling the pain, and how much stronger she has become on the other side.

Today I bring you Dr. Rebecca Cohen’s wild journey from indoctrination into the obstetrics system, to serving as a radical, holistically-hearted birthkeeper. After almost dropping out of medical school several times during her training and residency, Rebecca finally got through the “hazing process” and became known as the “natural OB”. After having her own children, Rebecca decided to step away from her career, and when she was ready to serve women again years later in a different way, she found the Radical Birth Keeper School.

Roxane, a Radical Birth Keeper School graduate from Belgium, had her first baby via c-section after finding out she was positioned breech. Roxane suffered a horrible, life-threatening complication from the surgery 6 days postpartum, and decided shortly after there was no way she would go back to birth in the hospital ever again. Roxane stayed steadfast to her vision and birthed her second daughter in her own home, away from the harms of the hospital.

To kick off 2023, I'm bringing you a mind-blowing wild pregnancy story with quite the plot twist! 

At a supposed 44 weeks gestation with no signs of labor, Rachel began to backtrack on her conception timeline and realized that she actually conceived this baby shortly after an early pregnancy loss at around 9 weeks. Since she hadn't tracked the bleeding as a miscarriage, she went on with her pregnancy, believing that she was three months further along than she actually was! Her "year long" pregnancy went on to prepare her for an intense nearly 60-hour birth at 42 weeks. 

Rachel's story is an incredible testament to the mystery of birth, the power of trust and patience, and the magic of sitting in the unknown.

I'm excited to share with you all today Janessa's beautiful freebirth story, which is truly a reclamation of so many parts of her first birth, a hospital birth. After she consistently gave her power away in her first pregnancy and birth, by the time she got pregnant again, she knew she was going to do things very differently. With her second daughter, Janessa chose a peaceful pregnancy over a pregnancy in the system, and a freebirth over a hospitalized experience. Through taking responsibility for her choices, Janessa was able to reclaim everything that had given away in her first birth- even down to smiling through a peaceful emergence.
