William Somerset Maugham was an English playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author of the 1930s. By 1914 he was famous, with 10 successful plays produced and 10 novels published. In 1917, he was asked by the British Secret Intelligence Service (now MI6) to undertake a special mission in Russia; an experience which would go on to inspire Ashenden, a collection of short stories about a gentlemanly spy that influenced Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Maugham's most famous works include Of Human Bondage, a semiautobiographical novel, The Moon and Sixpence, Cakes and Ale and The Razor's Edge. His writing has inspired a string of over 35 film adaptations and has influenced many notable authors, including Anthony Burgess, George Orwell, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Dr Wortle, a devoted English scholar and the headmaster of the seminary academy, welcomes his two new teachers, confident that they will uphold the high standards of education at the school. However, to Wortle's dismay, mystery surrounds the couple and whilst they assimilate themselves to life on school campus with ease, Trollope is quick to uncover their scandalous secret. Lady Peacocke is accused of bigamy, a heinous and unconscionable crime in 19th century society, after it is discovered that she was previously married. Her former partner is depicted as being an abusive drunk, whom Mrs Peacocke believed to be dead, but she is nonetheless stripped of her new surname. When Mr Peacocke refuses to shun his beloved wife, it is left to the stern but fair-minded, Dr Wortle, to offer them a helping hand. As the parish of Bowick demand for the expulsion and banishment of the couple, the headmaster is the only thing that stands in the way of their demise. Trollope's fortieth novel, he creates a humorous yet realistic portrayal of Victorian small-town politics and as a result, the detrimental impact that a closed-minded community can have on its citizens. Narrator Biography Timothy West is an English film, stage and television actor and director. Publications Genres: Classics, British Literature Summary: If ever a novel were to perfectly mimic a modern soap opera, it would be Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe, which he published in 1722. The protagonist, Moll, experiences all of the hardships of life extremely early on, starting from the moment she's born. Her mother, a convicted felon, is sent to America while Moll is left in the care of a widow who instructs her on everything she needs to know about being a woman of her time. When Moll becomes a teenager, she takes a job as a house servant, wherein the two boys of the house both become enamored with her. Though she's first wooed by the eldest, he then convinces her that she should marry his younger brother, which she does. After a few years, however, Moll's husband passes away, and this begins her string of marriages that leave her feeling empty and - in some cases - in trouble. Moll hones her ability to convince men that she's a wealthy widow, although throughout the course of the novel her finances take many a dip, especially after she moves to America like her mother. While there, she continuously tries to evade the law and the harsh sentences that come with some of her money-related crimes and later decides to move back to England after getting her hands on the inheritance money that her mother left her. Set in London and Paris, it shows the plight of the French people under the brutal oppression of the aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, and the corresponding savage brutality of the revolutionaries towards the former aristocrats in the years immediately following. Among the memorable characters are Charles Darnay, a French former aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution, and Sydney Carton, a dissipated English barrister who tries to redeem his ill-spent life out of love for Darnays wife, Lucie Manette. In this moving, intricate tale spanning eight tumultuous years, Dickens orchestrates the wider political picture behind the story of Lucie, Darnay and Carton with his customary brilliance. This epic production, dramatised by Mike Walker, stars Robert Lindsay as Dickens, with Alison Steadman, Jonathan Coy, Andrew Scott, Paul Ready, and Karl Johnson. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com

Where Angels Fear to Tread by E. M. Forster | Audiobook31 May 201202:51:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Where Angels Fear to Tread Author: E. M. Forster Narrator: Stephen Fry Format: Abridged Length: 2 hrs and 51 mins Language: English Release date: 05-31-12 Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd Genres: Classics, British Literature Summary: Penguin Classics presents E.M. Forster's Where Angels Fear to Tread, adapted for listening and now available as a digital audiobook as part of the Penguin English Library series. This abridged version is read by Stephen Fry. "I had got an idea that everyone here spent their lives in making little sacrifices for objects they didn't care for, to please people they didn't love; that they never learned to be sincere - and, what's as bad, never learned how to enjoy themselves." E. M. Forster's first novel is a witty comedy of manners that is tinged with tragedy. It tells the story of Lilia Herriton, who proves to be an embarrassment to her late husband's family as, in the small Tuscan town of Monteriano, she begins a relationship with a much younger Italian man - classless, uncouth, and highly unsuitable. A subtle attack on decorous Edwardian values and a humanely sympathetic portrayal of the clash of two cultures, Where Angels Fear to Tread is also a profound exploration of character and virtue. Part of a collection of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives, the Penguin English Library offers affordable, collectable, quality productions that are perfect for on-the-go listening. Dubliners by James Joyce | Audiobook01 Apr 201606:29:00

Publications Genres: Classics, British Literature Summary: The 15 short stories that make up James Joyce's Dubliners give a realistic account of the life in and around Dublin, Ireland, in the early 20th century. In many of the short stories within the work, Joyce includes the Irish struggle for self-identity through epiphanies from the main characters. The first short story, The Sisters, is a first person account of a young boy's relationship with a Priest and the boy's eventual acceptance of the Priest's death due to illness. In another story, A Painful Case, Mr. Duffy begins a friendship with the married Mrs. Sinico. However, when Mrs. Sinico tries to make the relationship more than friends, Mr. Duffy ends all meetings with her and resumes his life of solitude. Years later, Mr. Duffy discovers from a newspaper article that Mrs. Sinico died after being hit by a train. The article reveals that the death is thought to be suicide, and Mr. Duffy notes that she had started drinking two years prior- at the same time that Mr. Duffy had ended their friendship. Mr. Duffy feels guilty for ending his relationship with Mrs. Sinico and her death makes him come to the understanding that he really is alone. These and other stories that make up the work, paint an interesting and detailed picture of how James Joyce viewed the strong yet uncertain future of the Irish. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft by Walter Scott | Audiobook08 Feb 201214:09:00
Listen to full audiobooks for free on : https://hotaudiobook.com/free Title: Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft Author: Walter Scott Narrator: Eric Brooks Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 9 mins Language: English Release date: 02-08-12 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: Classics, British Literature Summary: In ill health following a stroke, Sir Walter Scott wrote Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft at the behest of his son-in-law, J. G. Lockhart, who worked for a publishing firm. The book proved popular, and Scott was paid 600, which he desperately needed. (Despite his success as a novelist, Scott was almost ruined when the Ballantyne publishing firm, where he was a partner, went bankrupt in 1826.) Letters was written when educated society believed itself in enlightened times due to advances in modern science. Letters, however, revealed that all social classes still held beliefs in ghosts, witches, warlocks, fairies, elves, diabolism, the occult, and even werewolves. Sourcing from prior 16th- and 17th-century treatises on demonology, along with contemporary accounts from England, Europe, and North America (Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi, for one), Scott's discourses on the psychological, religious, physical, and preternatural explanations for these beliefs are essential for acolytes of the dark and macabre; the letters dealing with witch hunts, trials (Letters Eight and Nine), and torture are morbidly compelling. Scott was neither fully pro-rational modernity nor totally anti-superstitious past, as his skepticism of one of the "new" sciences (skullology, as he calls it) is made clear in a private letter to a friend. Thus, Letters is both a personal and intellectual examination of conflicting belief systems, at a time when popular science began to challenge superstition in earnest. Contact: info@hotaudiobook.com
